“Mr. Christensen has been a respected leader in FVSD for over 20 years,” read a statement issued by the district. “His contributions and connections to this community are immeasurable. He was a father, husband, brother, and friend to so many. His passing leaves us devastated and heartbroken.”

According to police, it is not known if he jumped or fell from a parking structure in Anaheim, but police suspect he died by suicide.

Christensen, who was in his 50s, was scheduled to appear in court on Monday after he was recently charged with misdemeanor counts of child endangerment and battery. He pleaded not guilty to both crimes.

According to FVSD, grief counselors will be available at all schools to help students, staff and their families.

“I too am struggling to find adequate words to convey the shock and heartbreak we are all feeling right now,” said FVSD Superintendent Katherine Stopp in the district’s statement. “I know that we will find a way to come together as a community and care for one another. Let us all show patience to each other as we work through this time in the next days and weeks.”

Anaheim Ducks’ Trevor Zegras, Canadian women’s hockey star Sarah Nurse grace NHL 23 cover

Anaheim Ducks forward Trevor Zegras and Team Canada forward Sarah Nurse are the cover athletes for NHL 23, EA Sports announced Wednesday, noting that Nurse is the first women’s hockey player to grace the cover of its NHL video game.

“It’s something that I never even thought was in the realm of possibilities,” Nurse, who starred in Canada’s dominant gold-medal win at the 2022 Beijing Olympics, told ESPN. “I never even dreamed of being on it. And so I think that it’s huge, and I think that it just speaks for where women’s hockey is right now, the visibility and the value that people see in women’s hockey.”

Clem Kwong, lead producer for the EA Sports NHL series, said there had been discussions in recent years about featuring a female hockey star on the cover. The timing was right for this edition after EA Sports added women’s national team rosters from the IIHF world championships to NHL 22 late last year, marking the first time women’s players could be selected in the game.

“When we started going through the process and looking at the short list of athletes, we were looking for athletes that were on the biggest stage. She’s a pioneer in inclusivity and diversity within the sport too,” Kwong said of Nurse.

Zegras had a star-making debut with the Ducks in 2021-22 thanks to several highlight-reel goals. The most audacious one saw Zegras lift the puck on his stick behind the Buffalo Sabres’ net and pass it over the goal cage to teammate Sonny Milano for a score.

Gamers tried to recreate that move, dubbed “The Zegras,” in NHL 22.

“I saw a bunch of videos of kids trying to create it,” Zegras, who finished second in the Rookie of the Year voting last season, told ESPN. “Almost like glitching the puck over the net, which was pretty cool to see.”

Programmers have created a way for players to execute that over-the-net pass in the game, making “The Zegras” an official part of the franchise.

Mike Inglehart, creative director at EA Sports, sees Zegras as the face of a generation of players who are pulling off “video game moves” in the NHL.

“They’re doing stuff where you’re saying, ‘That should be in a video game first and in the NHL second,'” Inglehart said. “Who knows where it goes? There’s probably something that ends up in NHL 24 that we’re not even thinking about right now.”

NHL 23 will be released on all platforms Oct. 14. Additional information about new features will be revealed later this week.

Report: Penguins add Rickard Rakell from Anaheim in exchange for Simon, Aston-Reese, draft pick

To an extent, making a trade and burning a future asset in exchange for help now ended up carrying the day in Pittsburgh after all at the NHL trade deadline. The Penguins have acquired forward Rickard Rakell from the Anaheim Ducks.

Rakell, 28, carries a $3.78 million salary cap hit, which is more than Aston-Reese and Simon combined, so there could be some salary retained by the Ducks. Final details of the trade, including the specifics on which prospect Pittsburgh is sending remain unknown, as the NHL processes and completes a bunch of trades that come in right before the 2:59:59pm deadline.

For the Pens, it might be a “best of all worlds” trade. The badly needed a forward who can put the puck in the net. Rakell is a two-time 30+ goal scorer in the NHL with 16 goals and 12 assists in 51 games this season.

Ironically enough, though, for a team that has been in dire need of someone to finish, Rakell hasn’t always been the sharpest in this area with typically a low shooting percentage over the past few seasons.

To add to the list of reasons this could also be a slow start, Rakell has missed the Ducks’ last three games with an injury.

However, one of Rakell’s strengths is his play off the rush, which combined with his goal-scoring resume makes one think he could be a fun player to try out with Evgeni Malkin and probably do what Kasperi Kapanen has been supposed to do.

Rakell isn’t going to add much defensively, and his stats have been pointing down since peaking from 2016-18, though perhaps due to some team effects.

In return, the Pens give up two fringe players on their depth chart in Zach Aston-Reese and Dominik Simon, plus a second round pick. Aston-Reese will be missed on the PK, though has proven to be a replaceable aspect of that group. Speaking of replaceable, Simon has good advanced metrics but hasn’t had a huge role and his low stats make him a good candidate to go the other way and not lose too much.

In the end, the biggest loss will be this year’s second round pick, a pick that GM Ron Hextall probably did not want to move. However, with his team once again poised and looking like one of the top teams in the Metropolitan division and in the East, their biggest weakness was needing one more finisher and point-scoring winger.

Giving up a second round pick is well more than worth it to add a player like Rackell, even if he turns out being only a rental. He can do things that the Penguins need, and unlike other trades around the league, it did not cost an inordinate amount to add to the team. The Pens also will give up a yet unnamed “prospect”, but that doesn’t much change the calculus of this trade, because quite frankly they don’t have any prospects good enough to fret over losing at this point.

For the longest time, it looked like the Pens would opt to go with what they had on hand, but the last minute move strengthens the team and makes them better down the stretch. Hextall owed that to the team for as well as they have played this season.

Projected playoff lineup

Jake Guentzel – Sidney Crosby – Bryan Rust
Jason Zucker – Evgeni Malkin – Rickard Rakell
Evan Rodrigues – Jeff Carter – Kasperi Kapanen
Danton Heinen – Teddy Blueger – Brock McGinn

Brian Dumoulin / Kris Letang
Mike Matheson / John Marino
Marcus Pettersson / Chad Ruhwedel

Reserves: Brian Boyle, Mark Friedman, Nathan Beaulieu, Radim Zohorna

There is still some room to sort lines accordingly, but if healthy Pittsburgh’s top-nine and even top-12 forwards looks really good right now. They will need players like Zucker, Rakell and Kapanen to come through down the stretch, but those are also players in good situations right now to do so.

4 injured, including 2 firefighters, in building fire near Knott’s Berry Farm, authorities say

ANAHEIM, Calif. (KABC) — At least four people were injured in a four-alarm fire Sunday at a building police believe was an illegal marijuana dispensary near Knott’s Berry Farm, authorities say.

According to the Metro Cities Fire Authority, calls began coming in about a fire at a single-story commercial building at 1169 N. Knollwood Circle just before 11:30 a.m.

Authorities tell Eyewitness News a total of four people were injured, including two firefighters who suffered burn injuries due to an explosion that occurred.

They’re currently getting treated at UCI Medical Center in Orange and police say they’re expected to be OK.

Sgt. Steve Pena of the Anaheim Police Department said a suspect was severely injured during the process and rushed to an area hospital.

“It looks like they were doing some sort of honey extraction — making hash oil (and) doing a chemical process with marijuana,” said Pena.

He added that one suspect was detained, “and, so far, he’s cooperating with our investigation.”

Firefighters from the Orange County Fire Authority and the Orange and Fullerton fire departments were assisting in the effort.

The incident remains under investigation.

The location of the fire is about two miles east of the theme park. Video submitted to ABC7 by a visitor showed a large plume of smoke visible from the park.

This is a developing story. This article will continue to be updated as more information becomes available.
