Sanders was hospitalized for around a month in the middle of last season when the Tigers finished 11-2.

He had a dislocated toe along with an inflamed nerve. His initial procedure was in September and he later returned to the field for practice using a golf cart and crutches. He roamed the sideline for a game with the help of a push scooter.

TRENDING STORIES:

As he healed, his toes began to darken under the bandages.

“They were talking about the amputation of toes,” said Sanders. “Then they were talking about the amputation of my leg from the knee down. Then, they were trying to ensure I had life.”

Teen Ate Bad Takeout, Had Both Legs and All Fingers Amputated

  • A Massachusetts college student was hospitalized after eating bad Chinese takeout.
  • The 19-year-old experienced vomiting, fever, and shortness of breath before his admission.
  • He eventually needed both legs and ten fingers amputated due to a rare complication of sepsis.

A 19-year-old who was admitted to the hospital with what initially looked like food poisoning eventually needed both legs and all of his fingers amputated, according to a report by The New England Journal of Medicine.

The patient, a Massachusetts college student, had eaten leftover rice, chicken, and lo mein the day before his admission. Shortly after eating, he and a friend who had the same meal both vomited.

While his friend recovered after throwing up once, the patient continued to experience vomiting and stomach pain, as well as progressively worsening muscle pain, weakness, and chills. His symptoms escalated to include chest pain, shortness of breath, headache, neck stiffness, blurry vision, and skin discoloration.

The student was admitted to the hospital about 20 hours after his initial bout of vomiting. At that point, he had a fever of over 105 F and an unusually high heart rate, Newsweek reported. His skin discoloration quickly transformed into a splotchy, purplish rash that covered almost his entire body.

Eventually, the tissue in his extremities began to die, and doctors had to amputate both legs below the knee as well as parts of all 10 fingers, according to the case study. They also placed a temporary

pacemaker

to treat the patient’s heart dysfunction.

The patient had a rare complication of septic shock

Doctors officially diagnosed this patient with meningococcal purpura fulminan disease, a rare complication of septic shock, in the report published March 2021.

Many of the patient’s symptoms — fever, respiratory collapse, shock, and organ failure — were consistent with sepsis, where the body’s response to an infection causes widespread inflammation and possible damage.

Purpura fulminans is an especially rare feature that can occur with septic shock, causing distinctive blood spots or lesions on the skin.

The patient’s stiff neck was a hallmark of meningitis, or swelling of the brain caused by infection. His doctors later learned that the teen had not received the recommended booster after getting his first dose of the meningococcal vaccine.

The hospitalized student was overall healthy before his admission, his family told doctors. He had a history of anxiety and

depression

, as well as some drug use: drinking a couple times a week, dabbling with cough syrup and antihistamines, and smoking marijuana daily and two packs of cigarettes weekly. He worked part-time at a restaurant and had no history of drug allergies.

Experts have warned that rice may contain spores of Bacillus cereus, bacteria that can survive being cooked and thrives at room temperature. If left out too long, the bacteria will multiply and release toxins that can cause vomiting and diarrhea, according to the CDC.

Student had legs, fingers amputated after eating leftover Chinese

A 19-year-old college student developed sepsis and lost his legs and fingers after eating leftover Chinese takeout food in what a doctor described as a “perfect storm” of events.

Dr. Bernard Hsu, a licensed toxicologist, described how the young man became severely ill after eating tainted leftovers, including lo mein, chicken and rice.

“This was a freak accident happening in a perfect storm sequence of events,” Hsu, who did not treat the man, said in a YouTube video on Feb 16.

The teen’s case was first reported in March 2021 in the New England Journal of Medicine, which detailed how he was admitted to Massachusetts General Hospital as he was suffering from “shock, multiple organ failure, skin mottling, and a rapidly progressive reticular rash.”

“The patient had been well until 20 hours before this admission, when diffuse abdominal pain and nausea developed after he ate rice, chicken, and lo mein leftovers from a restaurant meal,” the outlet said.

The college student had experienced organ failure, shock, and skin rash after eating the leftovers.

“Multiple episodes of emesis [vomiting] occurred, with vomitus that was either bilious or red-brown. The abdominal pain and vomiting were followed by the development of chills, generalized weakness, progressively worsening diffuse myalgias [muscle pains], chest pain, shortness of breath, headache, neck stiffness, and blurry vision,” it added.

The part-time restaurant worker’s temperature was over 105 degrees Fahrenheit, his heart rate was 166 beats per minute and his respiratory rate was 28 breaths per minute, the medical journal said.

“A diffuse reticular [netlike] purpuric rash was present on the face, chest, abdomen, back, arms, and legs, sparing the palms and soles,” it added.

He underwent blood and urine tests and was diagnosed with a bacterial infection called Neisseria meningitidis, which caused his blood to clot and his liver to fail.

His skin necrosis was said to be caused by “purpura fulminans,” a severe complication of meningococcal septicemia.

Doctors discovered that he had only received one of three doses of a meningococcal conjugate vaccine without a booster, and had only received one dose of a serogroup B meningococcal vaccine out of two or three recommended by the CDC, Newsweek reported.

After getting parts of all fingers and his legs below his knees amputated, the man went on to have a “relatively good recovery.”

A friend had eaten the same meal as the victim and vomited — but did not become progressively sick, according to the report.

The shocking case has received renewed attention thanks to a Hsu’s video posted on his YouTube channel called “Chubbyemu,” which has 2.46 million subscribers.

The video, which identifies the student as “JC,” has been viewed over 1 million times as of Tuesday afternoon.

To reduce the risk of food poisoning from bacteria, leftover food should be refrigerated no later than two hours after it is removed from a heat source, according to WebMD.

A teen ate leftover rice and noodles. Hours later, doctors amputated his legs and fingers

Hours after eating improperly stored leftovers from a restaurant, a 19-year-old was admitted to the hospital with multiple organ failure and had both his legs and all his fingers amputated.

The Massachusetts college student had eaten rice, chicken and lo mein from a restaurant. Soon after, he felt abdominal pain and his skin turned a shade of purple, according to a report by The New England Journal of Medicine.

The teenager was admitted to a hospital for “shock, multiple organ failure, and rash,” and his condition quickly declined. He experienced abnormal breathing, high blood pressure and vomiting. The student had been healthy overall with regular drinking and smoking habits, the report said.

After further tests, he was diagnosed with meningococcal purpura fulminan disease, which caused his stiff neck, nausea, respiratory collapse, shock and organ failure, according to the report. Purpura fulminan is a rare complication that comes with septic shock, which the college student experience, according to the report.

The condition is caused by bacteria and brings symptoms such as sudden fever and vomiting. The Centers for Disease and Control Prevention warns it can “lead to death in as little as a few hours.”

Over the course of his hospital stay, his condition worsened and he developed necrosis, the death of tissue and cells. At that point, doctors had to amputate his legs and fingers, according to the report. He also needed a pacemaker for 13 days to treat his cardiac dysfunction.

Experts have warned against the dangers of improperly storing leftover rice because items such as rice and pasta contain a bacterium called Bacillus cereus. The bacteria produces a toxin when heated and left out too long, according to the CDC. In 2008, a teenager died in his sleep after eating leftover pasta that wasn’t refrigerated overnight, a case that was reported in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology.

The medical team learned that although the Massachusetts student had received a first dose of the meningococcal vaccine, he never received the recommended booster. His roommate also ate the leftover food and vomited but didn’t have life-threatening reactions.

Teenager has legs and fingers amputated after eating leftover noodles that caused potentially fatal condition

After eating leftover food in his fridge, which triggered a potentially deadly disease, a 19-year-old student had to get both of his legs and and all ten fingers amputated.

In a YouTube video posted by Chubbyemu, Bernard Hsu, a doctor and YouTube creator, details the results of a case from The New England Journal of Medicine, which was first reported in March 2021.

According to this study, a patient was admitted to the paediatric intensive care centre (PICU) “because of shock, multiple organ failure, and rash”. His pain first started 20 hours before he was admitted and shortly after he “ate rice, chicken, and lo mein leftovers from a restaurant”.

As noted in Hsu’s video, this patient, who is referred to as JC, had fever, high blood pressure, and pale skin. After JC vomited, doctors noticed a “green-ish yellow colour, not looking like any particular kind of food”.

However, JC’s abnormal breathing became an even greater concern, along with the dropping of his blood pressure. Once he was sedated, doctors saw changes in his skin.

“Doctors started to notice a rash containing small spots emerging all over his body,” Hsu explained. “At first, this mottled appearance looked like bruises, but then they became a deep reddish brown, red defined at the edges.”

JC continued to get sicker and was then transported via helicopter to another hospital that had more resources.

Following more blood and urine tests, JC was diagnosed with neisseria meningitidis, which caused his stiff neck, nausea, respiratory collapse, shock, and multiorgan failure.

As noted by the Centers for Disease and Control Prevention (CDC), this condition, also known as meningococcal disease, is caused by bacteria, with symptoms like sudden fever and vomiting. It can also “lead to death in as little as a few hours”.

In regards to his skin changes, this was due to purpura fulminans, which Hsu said are purple rashes that can happen very suddenly. As noted by the Canadian Medical Association Journal, purpura fulminans can be a severe and rare result of Meningococcal disease.

And although he continued to stabilise, the infections on JC’s body were so severe that he had to have all 10 of his fingers and both of his legs amputated.

Similar to JC, his roommate also threw up after eating the leftover food but he didn’t react nearly as badly. The doctors then studied JC’s medical history more to discover how he differed from his roommate.

They learned that JC only received the first dose of the meningococcal vaccine just before he entered middle school. And once he reached the age of 16, JC did not receive the recommended booster for the vaccine.

Per the CDC, a Serogroup B meningococcal is then recommended between the age of 16 to 23. Hsu explained that this usually consists of two separate doses within a few month period, and again, JC only got one dose.

Hsu also explained while it was clearly the leftover food that caused JC’s symptoms, it remains unknown how traces of neisseria meningitidis got into it. Luckily, JC is doing much better and his condition is improving.

As noted by WebMD, bacteria can quickly grow on leftover food when stored at room temperature. However, it isn’t clear where JC kept his meal before eating it.

The medical site notes that food should be put in the fridge or freezer within two hours after it’s “been cooked or taken off a heat source”.

While it can depend on what kind of food you’re eating, leftovers can be “kept for three to four days in the refrigerator”, according to Mayo Clinic.
