Sparks acquire Dearica Hamby from Aces for rights to Amanda Zahui B.

The Las Vegas Aces traded Dearica Hamby to the Los Angeles Sparks on Saturday, a somewhat surprising move that removes a core player from the Aces’ 2022 WNBA championship team who had recently signed a contract extension through 2024.

The Sparks also receive the Aces’ 2024 first-round pick in exchange for the negotiating rights to Amanda Zahui B., and the Sparks’ 2024 second-round pick.

Hamby spent her entire career with the Las Vegas Aces/San Antonio Stars’ organization since being drafted from Wake Forest in 2015 and has been an All-Star the past two seasons. She was named WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year in 2019 and 2020.

She has career averages of 9.2 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 85 starts.

“Dearica has dedicated eight years of her career to this organization, and played a big role in our success since the team moved to Las Vegas,” Aces general manager Natalie Williams said in a statement. “We’re going to miss her as a teammate, and are grateful for all of her contributions to the Aces over the years.”

Sparks general manager Karen Bryant said, “Adding Dearica to our roster plus a future first-round pick was a solid move for us. We’re excited to have another key piece in place as we start free agency.”

In June, the Aces announced the had signed Hamby to a two-year contract extension. But there were signs that something might be amiss this week when Hamby — who during the Aces’ victory parade announced she is pregnant — tweeted, “Imagine expressing your fears as a woman and being pregnant in this profession/world…. Then to be reassured that you were supported.. and your back was “had”…. only to then be used against you.”

The Sparks — who have a new coach in Curt Miller and GM in Bryant — have made big moves via trade this offseason, bringing in veteran point guard Jasmine Thomas this week from Connecticut.

Amanda Nunes says she could’ve finished Julianna Peña

DALLAS – Amanda Nunes says she intentionally dragged her UFC 277 fight with Julianna Peña to the final bell in order to prove a point.

Nunes (22-5 MMA, 15-2 UFC) avenged her stunning upset loss to Peña (11-5 MMA, 7-3 UFC) on Saturday at American Airlines Center in Dallas with a lopsided beatdown over the course of five rounds that resulted in a unanimous decision win to regain the women’s bantamweight title.

Despite three knockdowns in the fight and opening a nasty cut on Peña’s forehead, Nunes was unable to stop the fight inside the distance. She said that was all by design, though, and she could’ve forced a stoppage on multiple occasions.

“I know Julianna’s tough,” Pena told MMA Junkie and other reporters post-fight at UFC 277. “I know. I was ready for that. I could’ve finished her, but I wanted to go five rounds with her tonight to prove I was better than her. … I’m better than her. I proved it tonight.”

With the win, Nunes regained her status as a two-division UFC champion, adding the 135-pound title to her mantel once again alongside the women’s featherweight belt.

Nunes’ second-round submission loss to Peña at UFC 269 in December was one of the biggest upsets to ever take place in the octagon. She said it was her mission to show that was a mere stumble.

“Tonight proved that was a lucky day for her,” Nunes said. “If she needed to become a champion like that – she had her time, but now it’s over.”

Nunes attended the UFC 277 post-fight news conference on crutched and a limp. She said it’s nothing serious, though, and once she heals will be prepared to talk about her next move.

“It was a war tonight,” Nunes said. “I expected to come out with something, but it’s going to be fine.”

Simona Halep cruises into Wimbledon quarterfinals; Amanda Anisimova ends Harmony Tan’s run

Simona Halep is living up to her status as the only former Grand Slam champion left in this year’s women’s draw.

The Romanian beat fourth-seeded Paula Badosa 6-1, 6-2 on Centre Court on Monday to return to the Wimbledon quarterfinals and extend her winning streak at the All England Club to 11 matches.

Halep will next face 20th-ranked American Amanda Anisimova, who ended Harmony Tan’s time at Wimbledon with a 6-2, 6-3 victory. The 115th-ranked Tan, from France, had become one of the toasts of the tournament after a remarkable run that included ousting seven-time Wimbledon champion Serena Williams in the first round.

It is Anisimova’s first Grand Slam quarterfinal since the semis at the French Open in 2019, when she also beat Tan along the way. Anisimova, 20, lost in the first round of Wimbledon last year.

The 16th-seeded Halep won the title in 2019 but missed last year’s edition with a left calf injury, while the 2020 tournament was canceled because of the pandemic. This was, however, Halep’s first win over a top-five ranked player on grass.

“I worked really hard in the past two, three months. I’m really happy with all that I’ve done,” Halep said. “I got the confidence. I really feel this is my game. I’m pushing myself to do it as much as possible. I want to improve still.”

The former No. 1, who also won the French Open in 2018, has yet to drop a set in this year’s tournament and consistently got the better of Badosa in the baseline rallies. She finished with only nine unforced errors and saved the only break point she faced.

“I was just missing,” Badosa said. “Some days it goes in the line. And some days, like today, all of them go out.”

Badosa’s loss means No. 3 Ons Jabeur is the only top-10 seed left in the women’s tournament.

Halep, 30, has said the injury made her consider retirement. There doesn’t seem to be any thought of that now.

“It means a lot that I’m back in a quarterfinals after I struggled so much with injuries and self-confidence,” Halep said. “But, as I said, I’m working hard every day. I feel like if I do that, I will get better. Actually I’m really happy with the way I’m playing. I’m really confident. It’s a pleasure to be on court.”

Ajla Tomljanovic, meanwhile, came from a set down to beat Alize Cornet and reach her second straight Wimbledon quarterfinal. The Australian won 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 on No. 2 Court to set up a meeting with Elena Rybakina, and was in tears after a grueling match that lasted 2 hours, 35 minutes.

“I didn’t really think I could do it,” said Tomljanovic, who lost to eventual champion Ash Barty in last year’s quarterfinals. “I can’t believe a year later I’m in the same position.”

Cornet, 32, ended No. 1 Iga Swiatek’s 37-match winning streak in the previous round. The French veteran was playing in her 62nd straight Grand Slam tournament — equaling the WTA record held by Ai Sugiyama — and 65th overall, but only reached her first major quarterfinal at the Australian Open this year.

Rybakina reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the first time after beating Petra Martic 7-5, 6-3.

The 17th-seeded Rybakina broke in the final game of the first set and then again for a 4-2 lead in the second. She finished with 26 winners to 13 for her opponent.

Rybakina reached the French Open quarterfinals last year, when she made the fourth round at Wimbledon in her first appearance at the All England Club.

Martic was playing Wimbledon for the 10th time but has never been past the fourth round.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Katie Taylor defeats Amanda Serrano in first boxing match headlined by two women at Madison Square Garden

Taylor, who won a gold medal in the 2012 Olympics, stays undefeated and improves her career record to 21-0 and six knockouts.

The 35-year-old won via a split decision in front of a capacity crowd at the Garden, successfully defending her women’s lightweight titles in the WBA, IBF, WBO and WBC.

The bout ended in spectacular fashion as both fighters, visibly exhausted, desperately tried to land their final punches.

It was Taylor, bloodied and unsteady on her feet after taking heavy shots from Serrano in the fifth round, who was declared the winner.

“I knew going into it I was going to be in the trenches at some stage,” Taylor said, according to Reuters.

“She’s a phenomenal fighter, a great, great person, and I had the heart and the skill and I knew I was going to be able to come through.”

Serrano’s record now stands at 42-2-1 and 30 knockouts. She has earned world titles across seven weight classes ranging from 115 to 140 pounds. Last year, Serrano, 33, successfully defended her WBO and WBC featherweight titles.

Ahead of the match, Taylor told CNN she was eager to get in the ring.

“We’re two great champions in our prime and it’s going to make for such an amazing fight,” Taylor said. “I think stylistically we might do very, very well together. She’s obviously a very, very aggressive fighter and so am I. So, I think it’s going to be a very, very exciting fight.”

The match marked the first time two women were headlining at the “World’s Most Famous Arena.” It was also the boxing’s first fight between the pound-for-pound No. 1 and No. 2 since 2008, when Manny Pacquiao defeated Juan Manuel Marquez.

As a long-time pioneer in the sport, Taylor said her own success isn’t enough, saying she also wants other women boxers to be elevated.

“I feel like we have covered a lot of ground over the last few years in terms of the paycheck and the purses, but I still feel like we still have a long way to go as well,” she told CNN.

“It’s not okay that myself and Amanda are just the ones that are getting the big paychecks, but that has to carry over onto the other female fighters as well and I hope that can happen.”

Saturday’s match was originally scheduled to be held May 2, 2020, but was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
