Fans Love W.N.B.A. All-Stars, but Cast a Critical Eye on the League

CHICAGO — Benita Harrison-Diggs traveled from Virginia Beach to make a weekend out of the W.N.B.A. All-Star Game with friends. She remembered the excitement around the league’s “exceptional” inaugural season in 1997 and was hopeful that 2022 would match it.

Harrison-Diggs, 63, was one of hundreds of fans outside Wintrust Arena eager to cheer on the best women’s basketball players in the country. “The atmosphere is electric,” she said, smiling.

But as excited as Harrison-Diggs was to be in Chicago for All-Star weekend, she also felt let down.

“I’m a little disappointed that these women, as hard as they play, don’t get the same recognition that the N.B.A. gets,” she said. “They don’t get the same exposure, the coverage and especially not the same money.”

Harrison-Diggs came to the arena with friends for the W.N.B.A.’s skills competition and 3-point shooting contest, only to find that they were closed to the public and being held in a convention center next door. Instead, she and her friends were in a nearby courtyard watching the events much like people at home: on a TV screen. The competitions were scheduled to air on ESPN but were shifted to ESPNU at the last minute while ESPN showed the end of the men’s doubles tournament at Wimbledon. Many fans do not have access to the lesser-known ESPNU channel, and some complained on social media. ESPN later announced that it would rebroadcast the skills competition.

“They wouldn’t have bumped the men,” Harrison-Diggs said.

There is a swell of engagement and enthusiasm for the W.N.B.A. as it plays its 26th season, but the league’s growing fan base has come with a critical eye. Much of the league’s good will has been built around a core group of stars like Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi, Sylvia Fowles and Candace Parker. But as they begin to retire, the W.N.B.A. is transitioning into a new era of younger, social-media-savvy talent and a fan base demanding more of the league.

“I would have liked to see this actually feel like they put some thought into it, some foresight, about what they actually want a weekend to look like,” said Anraya Palmer, who traveled from Atlanta for the All-Star Game.

Palmer, who is Black, was 6 when the W.N.B.A. made its debut. She was instantly hooked. “It was the first time I saw women basketball players, especially women athletes, that looked like me: ‘Oh, I can actually grow up and do this,’” Palmer said.

Palmer grew up to be a teacher, but she’s also an Atlanta Dream fan. She said the league had changed for the better in many ways, but All-Star weekend was a prime example of an area for improvement. “It kind of feels like some things were maybe thrown together last second,” she said. “But the die-hard fans are still going to come out and have a good time.”

The W.N.B.A. said it did not have access to Wintrust Arena until Saturday night because it was being used by a cookware convention. The league hosted fan events and invitation-only concerts outdoors, but Commissioner Cathy Engelbert said security concerns because of mass shootings contributed to the league’s decision to close the concerts to the public. Spokesmen for the city and the Chicago Police Department declined to comment on the record.

On Sunday, 9,572 fans filed into Wintrust Arena, which seats about 10,400, for the All-Star Game. A’ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces and Fowles of Minnesota were the captains of Team Wilson, while Breanna Stewart and her Seattle teammate Bird led Team Stewart. Team Wilson defeated Team Stewart, 134-112.

Brittney Griner, the seven-time All-Star center for the Phoenix Mercury, was named an honorary starter. She has been detained in Russia on drug charges since February. Griner’s wife, Cherelle Griner, sat courtside. All 22 All-Stars wore jerseys with Griner’s name and No. 42 for the second half.

Aaron Brown of Chicago, a longtime Fowles fan, said he wouldn’t have missed the All-Star Game “for the world.” Brown said most men think women’s basketball is “boring,” but for him, the women’s game is “more pure and more entertaining.”

“The beauty of women’s basketball is the fundamentals — they play with I.Q. and skill level that even the men don’t,” he said. “You actually have to use not just your body but also your mind. Mostly men can get by off athleticism, but they don’t have the fundamentals.”

Brown said that his favorite player is Aces guard Kelsey Plum. She tied Maya Moore’s record for points in an All-Star Game with 30, and was named the most valuable player. Brown said Plum, like many other players, does not get the same kind of attention as the league’s bigger names.

“They kind of only push the same five or six,” he said. “There are so many other good players who are here now and not going to leave in two years. They deserve to shine.”

Patrick Schmidt of the Detroit area agreed; he said he would like to see the league “showcasing more of their Black superstars in addition to the legends that they do.”

Some fans also spoke about the disparity in pay between W.N.B.A. and N.B.A. players.

In 2022, the salary cap for each W.N.B.A. team is about $1.4 million, and the maximum player salary is just under $230,000. In the N.B.A., the team salary cap will be more than $123 million for the 2022-23 season, and the top players make nearly $50 million per year.

“It makes no sense that a star women’s basketball player makes less than a bench player in the N.B.A.,” Sterling Hightower, a fan from Chicago, said. “I’m a big N.B.A. fan. There are people in the N.B.A. I don’t even know who are making more than Diana Taurasi and Sue Bird.”

Cynthia Smith, a Liberty season-ticket holder for 24 years, put it bluntly: “Out of sight is out of mind.” She added, “I don’t know if we’re going to get equity in pay, but we need equity in exposure.”

Over the weekend, many players, like Mercury guard Skylar Diggins-Smith, echoed the fans’ sentiments. “Put us on TV more,” she said.

Fans have long complained about how difficult it can be to view games, such as having to toggle through multiple platforms, like ESPN, Twitter, Facebook and a buggy W.N.B.A. app.

“You tell me I’ve got to go through three apps, I’m not watching that. Let’s be honest here,” Wilson said. “I think that’s just key as to how the league can grow.”

Plum agreed, saying she would like to see the league make it easier to watch games. “We understand that the product is great, and when we get people to watch the game, they love it,” she said. “But the hardest part is getting people there.”

Bird, who is retiring this year after 21 seasons in the league, said the key would be renegotiating television rights over the next couple of years.

“That’s the moment,” Bird said. “That could really break things open and change the entire trajectory of our league.”

Nneka Ogwumike, a forward for the Los Angeles Sparks and the president of the W.N.B.A. players’ union, said the league was “on the precipice of something that can really turn into something big.”

Ogwumike said “the magic word is expansion.”

There are 12 teams, with 12 roster spots each. Engelbert said the league was analyzing demographics, women’s basketball “fandom” and viewership data for 100 cities, and new teams could be on the horizon by 2025. She also said finding the right media package was her “top business priority” for this year.

One of the greatest areas of growth for the league has been activism around social justice. The next wave of activism could be around abortion rights after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. Stewart called the decision “disgusting” and “heartbreaking” and said she expected there to be discussions soon about how to handle events in states where abortion is banned.

“As we are continuing to fight these social issues and injustices based on race, sex, sexual orientation, all of the things, the league needs to have our back in every way,” she said.

Bird said the shift to addressing social and political issues marked a huge transformation among players.

“I think back on my career, and I definitely was part of a shut-up-and-dribble generation where that’s what we did — we didn’t complain too much or talk about things too much, because we were scared to,” she said. “We have found our strength in our voice, and I’m just proud that I got to be a small part of it at the end of my career.”

Five Braves named 2022 NL All-Stars

“I’m definitely super happy and proud of the teammates and the coaching staff, I think it’s going to be awesome to have everyone out there,” Acuña said through team interpreter Franco García.

“I’d like to bring the whole team with me,” Swanson said. “I feel like each guy has had a big role in why we’ve been successful this year. Obviously, Travis is phenomenal, Willie’s had kind of a breakout year for himself, Ronnie is obviously Ronnie, so it’s pretty special. And then Fried, I’ve said that before, like, the guy’s elite, he’s top notch.”

Acuña didn’t have to worry about his spot in the 2022 Midsummer Classic because, on June 30, the right-fielder was announced as the leading vote-getter in the National League and earned an automatic starting spot.

Swanson was narrowly beaten out for the starting shortstop spot by the Dodgers’ Trea Turner in the final phase of fan voting, 52% to 48%. But Swanson won’t miss out on the experience, as he was selected as a reserve. Over his last 30 games, the 28-year-old is slashing .341/.370/.589 with 44 hits, eight home runs and 24 RBIs.

“It’s obviously a tremendous honor, something you definitely work for your whole life,” Swanson said, on being named to his first All-Star Game. “I’m very appreciative and thankful, very blessed to be in this position.”

William Contreras will join his brother Willson at the All-Star Game, becoming the 15th set of brothers to reach the Midsummer Classic. The last brothers to make an All-Star Game in the same year were Aaron and Bret Boone in 2003, per Elias Sports Bureau. With Bryce Harper injured, William takes Harper’s starting designated hitter spot, with his brother starting at catcher. The last brothers to start an All-Star Game together were Sandy and Roberto Alomar in 1992, per Elias Sports Bureau. William has played just 43 games this season, splitting time with d’Arnaud behind the dish, but he’s been extremely productive when he goes to the plate.

“That’s one thing that I don’t think we’ve ever really talked about,” Contreras said about playing in the All-Star Game with his brother. “It is a dream come true, and I think it’s something that we’ve always dreamed about, but it’s crazy that it’s happening. I’m really happy, I’m excited and I can’t wait for the day.”

Contreras is slashing .273/.358/.566 and is tied for the fifth-most homers by a catcher this season (11), but each catcher above him has played in 20 or more games. Contreras has 11 homers in 143 at-bats, 1 per every 13 ABs, which would be the 8th-best rate in the Majors, but he doesn’t have enough plate appearances to qualify.

The Braves will have both of their catchers in Los Angeles on July 19, as d’Arnaud also earned a reserve spot. The last time two catchers with at least 20 games caught for the same team made the All-Star team was 1957-60 and 1962, with Yogi Berra and Elston Howard of the Yankees. It happened just one other time before that, in 1942 with Bill Dickey and Buddy Rosar, also of the Yankees.

d’Arnaud has been a true veteran leader for Atlanta during the team’s successful season, and he’s also been a factor in the box and behind the dish. Over his last 15 games, he’s slashing .293/.359/.534, while already throwing out nine runners on the season, which is the fifth most in the Majors among qualified catchers.

“What makes it special is it’s in my hometown, where I grew up learning the game of baseball. It’s gonna be cool.” d’Arnaud said. “It’s special, and I’m very thankful for not only the fans, but for my peers who think I’m a good player.”

Fried also will be enjoying his first All-Star selection back home at Dodger Stadium, a place he visited often during his childhood. The Southern California native has garnered a 9-2 record, tied for fifth in wins in the Majors, with a 2.52 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 100 strikeouts. He is among the candidates to be the National League’s starting pitcher.

“[Fried’s] been one of the game’s top pitchers the last three years, and for him to get his first All-Star selection, also for him in his hometown, is very special,” d’Arnaud said.

Destruction All-Stars studio reportedly ditched as developer of new Twisted Metal game • Eurogamer.net

Now being handled by unnamed first-party studio.

Lucid Games, the UK developer behind Destruction All-Stars, is reportedly no longer working on a new Twisted Metal game for Sony as previously claimed, with the project now said to have been handed over to an unnamed first-party studio.

Word of a new Twisted Metal game first surfaced last September, when GamesBeat journalist Jeff Grubb claimed the project was in early development. Shortly after, VGC offered additional details, reporting Lucid Games would be the studio handling the new instalment and that the project would follow Destruction All-Stars lead as a free-to-play game.

In a follow-up to that initial story, however, VGC now reports the project has seen a significant shakeup, with its sources claiming Sony has made the decision to ditch Lucid Games as the developer of its new Twisted Metal title and move the project to an unnamed first-party studio elsewhere in Europe. Although no explanation for the switch was given, one source told VGC it may at least in part be related to Destruction All-Stars’ underwhelming reception.

Twisted Metal, 2012 Launch Trailer.

While Sony hasn’t yet made the new game official, previous reports have suggested it’s aiming to launch the title alongside its currently in-the-works Twisted Metal TV adaptation as part of a new initiative to more closely align its game releases with its movie and television projects.

A TV series based on Twisted Metal was initially touted back in 2019, and more details have begun emerge as production has shifted up a gear over the last year. The show (currently expected to arrive some time in 2023) is said to be an action-comedy take on the long-running PlayStation series, with Cobra Kai writer Michael Jonathan Smith on scripting duties.

According to Variety, it’ll tell the story of a motor-mouthed outsider – played by Anthony Mackie, perhaps best known as The Falcon in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe – who’s offered a chance at a better life, as long as he can deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland dominated by savage marauders driving vehicles of destruction.

Nintendo Adds N64 Controller Support To 3D All-Stars Version Of Super Mario 64

Well, here’s a surprise – Nintendo has now added N64 wireless controller support to the Super Mario 3D All-Stars version of Super Mario 64.

In other words, you can now play the classic N64 Mario game, similar to how to back when the game was originally released on the N64. Here are the full patch notes for Version 1.1.1, courtesy of Nintendo’s official support page:

Ver. 1.1.1 (Released November 3, 2021)

General
  • Super Mario 64 now supports the Nintendo Switch Online member exclusive Nintendo 64 Controller (sold separately). Players can now play this title using the same controls as found in the original Nintendo 64 release.

It follows on from 1.1.0 (released in November last year), which added GameCube controller support to Super Mario Sunshine. You can see more about this in our previous post.

So, there you go – you can now play the NSO version of Super Mario 64 with an original controller, and also the limited-time 3D All-Stars version that is no longer for sale.

Don’t Worry, 3D All-Stars’ Super Mario 64 Will Still Likely Be The Definitive Switch Version

Super Mario 64 as seen in Super Mario 3D All-Stars (Image: Nintendo)

Last month, Nintendo announced Nintendo 64 games would be coming to its Switch Online service in the form of a paid upgrade referred to as the “Expansion Pack”.

There have been all sorts of questions that have been raised so far, but one that keeps coming up is what version of Super Mario 64 will the service get? For Mario’s 35th last year, Nintendo included the Shindou iteration of the game in the “limited-time” Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection featuring an updated resolution and more.

So, what will the Switch Online version be? While Nintendo is still yet to confirm exactly what we’re getting, we’ve taken a screenshot from its official website and compared it to our own image from the version in 3D All-Stars. As you can see, the N64 Switch Online version looks to be a standard ROM, as you may have expected. There have also been suggestions it might be the Shindou version – which is a good or bad thing, depending on who you talk to…

Nintendo Switch Online:

Super Mario 3D All-Stars:

Super Mario 3D All -Stars (Image: Nintendo Life)

Here’s what we had to say about the Super Mario 64 upgrades featured within Super Mario 3D All-Stars in our Nintendo Life review:

“Super Mario 64 is probably the one whose upgrade is most impressive. It may have only been upscaled to 720p here, but the fact it originally ran at 240p means you’re getting a nice clean upscale at three times the number of vertical lines. The result is a brilliantly clean-looking version of the game…

“…it isn’t just the polygonal elements of the game that get a sharper side. Nintendo has taken time to redo all the sprite-based elements, too, and it’s this move that’s probably the most noticeable upgrade. All the text is nice and smooth, the counters for the number of lives and stars you have are sharp, and even stuff like snow falling during the winter stages looks much better.”

So, long story short – if you’re even slightly bitter about Nintendo making this particular N64 classic available so soon after the limited-time 3D Mario release, just keep in mind that the 3D All-Stars version of the game will still arguably be the definitive Switch version (provided you’re a fan of the Shindou version) – with all the modern touches that make it look better than ever on Switch.

This obviously hasn’t been the only talking point regarding Switch Online recently. Earlier this week, Nintendo put some concerns to rest, confirming N64 games would run at 60hz in Europe. Phew!

What are your own thoughts about Mario 64 being featured in the N64 launch line-up for Switch Online? Comment below.

WNBA All-Stars upset Team USA ahead of Olympics

A selection of WNBA All-Stars might have historic bragging rights by the end of August.

Team WNBA upset Team USA, 93-85, in the 2021 WNBA All-Star Game at Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas on Wednesday night. The national team is going for a record seventh consecutive gold at the Tokyo Olympics and rarely loses, even in exhibition matchups.

The league doesn’t typically hold an official All-Star Game in an Olympic year, but did so in a unique format for the run-up to the Tokyo Olympics. The 12 members of Team USA were automatic WNBA All-Stars and 12 more WNBA players were voted in to compete against them.

The U.S. team will play exhibitions against Australia and Nigeria in Vegas before heading to the Games. Both teams feature current WNBA talent in Liz Cambage and potentially Chiney and Nneka Ogwumike, though Nneka’s bid for Nigeria has reportedly been denied.

Allie Quigley won her third consecutive 3-point contest title at halftime and ahead of the fourth quarter, the current U.S. national team honored the gold-medal-winning team of 1996.

Ogunbowale leads WNBA over Olympic team

Dallas Wings guard Arike Ogunbowale led all scorers in her first All-Star Game with 26 points, showing she’s likely to lock in a spot on the 2024 Olympic team. She was 5-for-10 from 3-point range and looked from the jump like she was gunning for MVP.

Connecticut Sun center Jonquel Jones, who noted ahead of the game she wanted those bragging rights of beating the national team, finished with her standard double-double of 18 points and 14 rebounds. She also had four assists and three steals.

“I’m going to be like 85, talking to my grandkids, and I’ll be like, ‘Yeah, back in 2021, we beat the gold-medal team, so technically I won a gold medal,'” Jones said of wanting to win in the days before the game.

Atlanta Dream first-time All-Star Courtney Williams came up clutch on both ends in the fourth quarter, scoring 15 points off the bench on 7-for-8 shooting for Team WNBA.

The trio along with first-time All-Star Brionna Jones helped the team pull away in the middle of the fourth. Jonquel Jones hit a 3-pointer to match first-time Olympian Chelsea Gray’s 3, tying it at 71-71. Williams made a 10-footer and Brionna Jones laid one in on an assist from Sun teammate Jones.

Breanna Stewart broke the streak with a jumper for USA, but Ogunbowale drilled a 3-pointer and-1 falling out of bounds to fire up the All-Stars, 79-73. Back-to-back layups by Williams and another Ogunbowale 3 helped them pull even farther ahead at 86-78 with 3:42 left despite small buckets by USA.

They outscored Team USA, 27-19, in the fourth.

All-Star Game of rare defense

The All-Star Game experienced historic line movement by bookmakers ahead of tipoff, a signifier that it was expected to be a more tightly defended contest than was typical. The game total opened at 251.5 at BetMGM and dropped to 191.5.

Candace Parker, who had five points, five rebounds and five assists in her sixth All-Star Game, knew what was up early.

Though it wasn’t the stiff defense and strong rebounding typical of regular-season games, both sides contested shots and made it tough to get good looks. It really heated up, particularly under the basket, in the fourth quarter of a tie game. And everyone, including All-Star Liz Cambage, had their popcorn out.

Team USA center Brittney Griner scored a team-high 17 points with only three rebounds and two assists. Stewart scored 12, going 3-for-7 from 3-point range, with six rebounds. And Sylvia Fowles came off the bench to add 12.

Team WNBA held narrow lead throughout

The two All-Star teams swapped the lead four times in the first half and were tied six times. Team WNBA held the slim 44-43 advantage at halftime with Ogunbowale scoring 12 points on 5-for-9 shooting while “live tweeting” the action in her time off the court.

Jonquel Jones had eight points, sinking both of her 3-pointers in the first quarter, and six rebounds.

3-point contest: Allie Quigley three-peats, says she’ll retire from contest

Chicago Sky guard Allie Quigley won the 3-point contest for a third consecutive All-Star Game, but it wasn’t without great competition.

Jonquel Jones, the 6-foot-6 center, came to play. Jones knocked down nearly every shot in the first round, missing only five shots, and made it to the final with 27 points. She’s a 43.7% (31-for-71) 3-point shooter this season.

Quigley got into the final with 28 points after a mid-round review bumped it up a point. Seattle Storm guard Jewell Loyd went first and made 18 points, followed by the New York Liberty’s Sami Whitcomb with 26 points.

In the final, Quigley won her third consecutive title with a calm 26-point performance, enough on the final rack to edge out Jones’ 24. She made nine of her final 10 to take the title and said afterward it would be her last competition — though we’ll see if that holds next summer. Boos rained down from fans in Vegas when she told ESPN’s Holly Rowe.

Honoring 1996 Team USA

The 1996 Atlanta Olympics were a pivotal one for women’s athletics and marked the first of the basketball team’s six consecutive Olympic golds.

That team was honored between the third and fourth quarters of the All-Star Game, and players received flowers from the current members of Team USA. Among the ’96 players in attendance were Team WNBA co-coach Lisa Leslie and ESPN analyst Rebecca Lobo.

First-time Olympian Napheesa Collier’s fiancé, Alex Bazzell, shared a sweet set of photos and tweet showcasing what the connection between 1996 and the 2020-21 team means.

The 1996 team also wrote cards for the 2020 team, as shared by Rowe.

The 1996 Olympic Games and Team USA helped usher in the WNBA, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary season this year.
