Yeezy, owned by Ye, aka Kanye West, cut ties to JPMorgan before ‘White Lives Matter,’ antisemitism controversy

JPMorgan Chase is severing ties with Yeezy Brands, owned by Ye, the artist formerly known as Kanye West.

The bank sent Ye a letter on Sept. 20, weeks before he mired himself in controversy after wearing a “White Lives Matter” shirt at his Paris fashion show and writing antisemitic social media posts.

The letter was shared by Ye’s friend conservative activist Candace Owens on Twitter who commented, “We have reached extremely frightening times in this country.” She didn’t specify in her tweet when the letter was sent.

Ye told the New York Post of the news Wednesday, “Hey, if you call somebody out for bad business, that means you’re being antisemitic. I feel happy to have crossed the line of that idea so we can speak openly about things like getting canceled by a bank.”

Ye said he planned to cut his corporate ties in an interview a week before the bank’s letter, telling Bloomberg, “It’s time for me to go it alone.”

He added, “It’s fine. I made the companies money. The companies made me money. We created ideas that will change apparel forever. Like the round jacket, the foam runner, the slides that have changed the shoe industry. Now it’s time for Ye to make the new industry. No more companies standing in between me and the audience.”

He had also criticized executives at JPMorgan before the interview on Instagram and said he couldn’t get the CEO on the phone.

“I feel like there’s a lot of controlling and handling to suppress my ability to affect the American economy and industry,” Ye told Bloomberg of JPMorgan.

The bank gave Yeezy 60 days from the letter to find a new institution for its money.

Yeezy has already ended its relationship with Gap and Adidas said its partnership with the mogul is “under review” following the “White Lives Matter” controversy.

“After repeated efforts to privately resolve the situation, we have taken the decision to place the partnership under review,” the company said on Oct. 6, three days after Ye’s fashion show. “We will continue to co-manage the current product during this period,” the company said in a statement.

No reason has been specified by JPMorgan’s severing of ties.

Meta AKA Facebook’s Hyped VR Headset Leaked By Guy In A Hotel

Screenshot: Zectariuz Gaming / Ramiro Cardenas / Kotaku

It’s always worth rooting around down the side of the bed, or in the drawers, when you stay in a hotel room. Who knows what exciting items may have been forgotten by the previous guest? Like, for instance, a top-secret Oculus VR headset. That’s what happened to hotel worker Ramiro Cardenas, who claims to have discovered and revealed to the world that Project Cambria is most likely due to be called the Meta Quest Pro. Then he made an unboxing video.

The headset was originally teased last October, with the Project Cambria moniker, when Mark Zuckerberg said it would be sold at the “high end of the price spectrum.” At the time, we learned that it would possess cameras that send high-res full-color video to its screens, alongside face and eye-tracking, and all manner of exciting algorithms.

OCULUS QUEST PRO!!!!

Now, a full month before its intended announcement date, the new device is available for all to see thanks to one especially forgetful hotel guest. A very excited Ramiro Cardenas, who posted the video as Zectariuz Gaming, pulls the new headset and handheld controllers from their box, while whispering in delight.

This new-look Meta Quest Pro headset looks like something a mad inventor would wear in a 1980s Disney live-action movie about a man who accidentally invents time travel. The controllers, meanwhile, seem to have dropped the hollow hoop design of the Meta Quest 2 and gone for a much simpler, neater form-factor.

While covering up identifying details, the pictures accompanying the video do include one that reveals the legend, “NOT FOR RESALE – ENGINEERING SAMPLE.” It’s in pretty swish packaging considering! But it does suggest the product may be close to release.

Project Cambria

The Verge reports that Cardenas told them he was able to reunite the headset with the person who had stayed in the hotel room, but not before—you know—uploading photos and a video of the device to Facebook to blow up Meta’s plan to reveal it during October’s Meta Connect.

It’s quite the coincidence that Cardenas, and his Zectariuz Gaming page, had already taken a keen interest in the various forms of the Oculus. We have reached out to him to ask how this serendipitous event occurred.

We have of course also reached out to Meta to ask if they’ll bring forward the Pro’s announcement now, and indeed whether they’ll be mounting the engineer’s head on a pike outside their HQ. (We might not have phrased it exactly like that.)

These geriatric ravers (aka, “gravers”) are still partying hard

In this video we learn about gravers, aka “geriatric ravers” who are still dancing at festivals and getting loaded. It’s awesome to see people of all ages dancing and having fun. On the contrary, there are health risks that older ravers are more susceptible to than young ravers. In an interview with one of the older ravers, Garry, we learn that believes “you’re never too old to rave,” but that you should know your limits and when to take breaks. Throughout the rest of the video we hear from a variety of other gravers who talk about the ups and downs of their lifestyle.

From the YouTube description:

“It’s commonly accepted that your 20s is the time to get completely off your nut before calming down and respecting yourself. But increasingly, it seems that British people have a different idea.

Over 3.7 million over-45s go raving once a week in the UK, and there has been a 518 per cent increase in over-60s being treated for cocaine abuse since ten years ago.

These older ravers face worrying health risks that younger ravers don’t – the drugs are stronger, and their hearts aren’t. Will physiology prove to be the ultimate party pooper, or have these pioneers unlocked the key to eternal youth.”

BROOKLYN, New York City (WABC) — New York City is preparing to honor the late rapper Christopher Wallace, better known as Biggie Smalls and the Notorious B.I.G., who would have turned 50 on May 21.

MS-13 leader Miguel Angel Corea Diaz, aka Reaper, gets life in prison

Miguel Angel Corea Diaz, 41, also known as “Reaper,” was once the highest ranking MS-13 member on the East Coast, the US Department of Justice said Friday.

The life sentence was imposed after Corea Diaz, of Long Branch, New Jersey, was convicted by a federal jury in November of conspiracy to commit murder in the aid of racketeering, murder in the aid of racketeering, drug dealing conspiracy and possession with intent to distribute controlled substances, according to federal prosecutors.

CNN has reached out to Corea Diaz’s attorney, Steve Mercer, for comment.

In the defendant’s sentencing memorandum, Mercer requested a “sentence that provides for a realistic opportunity for release.” Mercer urged the judge to sentence Corea Diaz to no more than 21 years and two months.

Court documents said Corea Diaz “conspired with members and associates of MS-13 to engage in a pattern of racketeering activity, including murder, extortion, money laundering, witness tampering, and distribution of controlled substances” from 2010 to October 2017.

“The brutality of Corea Diaz is almost unfathomable,” Maryland US Attorney Erek L. Barron said in a Justice Department statement.

Corea Diaz and another gang member awaiting sentencing controlled and operated the Sailors Locos Salvatruchos Westside Clique, which ran a “protection” scheme around its base in Langley Park, Maryland, and extorted local businesses for operating in MS-13 “territory,” the statement said.

The gang also trafficked heroin, cocaine and other drugs, with a large part of the proceeds sent to its leadership in El Salvador, according to federal prosecutors.

MS-13, which prosecutors describe as one of the largest criminal organizations in the US, is a “transnational gang composed primarily of immigrants or descendants from El Salvador,” the statement said.

Salvadoran immigrants fleeing the country’s civil war started MS-13 decades ago in Los Angeles. Its membership includes immigrants from Honduras, Guatemala, Mexico and other Central and South American countries, according to an FBI Threat Assessment of the gang.

Over the years, MS-13 members have been convicted of a number of crimes nationwide, ranging from racketeering to murder.

CNN’s Ray Sanchez contributed to this report.

‘Insecure’ Season 5 Premiere: AKA Backlash, Amanda Seales, Issa Rae

Social media can be stranger than fiction at times. This is what actress Amanda Seales learned after Sunday’s Insecure Season 5 premiere.

Seales’ character Tiffany — who is an Alpha Kappa Alpha “soror,” or sister — wore several pink-and-green AKA-inspired outfits and the sorority’s shield in the college reunion-themed episode, as she’s done a number of times in the show’s five-year history. (Read our full premiere recap here.) But for whatever reason, this time around, her fashion caught the attention of women who are actually in the sorority, who then took to Twitter to angrily attack the show and its costar because she is not an AKA in real life.

“I don’t know why people keep asking me if I’m a soror,” Seales said in an Instagram video in response to the AKA backlash. “I am not a soror. Tiffany is a soror. Tiffany is a character on a TV show. I didn’t write the character. I play the character. I’m an actress, and I’m playing a character on a TV show.”

Seales then said in another video that she would’ve crossed the burning sands and pledged AKA if she’d had the time in graduate school at Columbia University, but she didn’t. Insecure‘s Molly, played by Yvonne Orji, is also an AKA but rarely wears as much pink-and-green insignia as Tiffany. Orji is also not a member of the sorority in real life.

“I think reality TV done really got folks f–ked-up… I’m just playing a character,” Seales added. “I feel like some folks really forget like it’s a TV show.”

In one tweet, a fan of the show demanded that co-creator and star Issa Rae and HBO not disrespect AKAs by allowing a non-member to play one. Ever the jokester, Rae responded, “Oh s–t, let me tell @HBO to delete one of the upcoming episodes then, hold on.”

What do you think of Amanda Seales playing an AKA on Insecure? Is it disrespectful or fictional fun? Drop your thoughts in the comments.
