Meghan echoes Kate’s Boston look at NYC awards hours before Netflix documentary airs – latest

Harry & Meghan new trailer

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have arrived in New York City ahead of the 2022 Robert F Kennedy Human Rights Ripple of Hope Award gala, where they and other “exemplary leaders” will be honoured for their “unwavering commitment to social change”.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who travelled via private jet from their home in California, were seen arriving on Monday, with the awards ceremony set to take place on Tuesday 6 December.

It is expected that the couple will make a red carpet appearance on Tuesday ahead of the gala, where they will be honoured alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and late NBA star Bill Russell for their work “to protect and advance equity, justice, and human rights”.

The royal couple’s trip comes just days before the first instalment of their highly anticipated Netflix documentary Harry & Meghan will be released, with the first three episodes to be released on Thursday 8 December. Three additional episodes will be released on Thursday 15 December.

Alec Baldwin praises Harry and Meghan for handling of press focus

“I was kind of shocked for them to come here and do this,” the actor said at the Ripple of Hope gala blue carpet.

“To handle difficult circumstances in the press without having too much difficulty. There’s always going to be certain difficulties.”

Baldwin joked that he might become “their driver” and lauded them for having “chosen a different path.”

“They’re newly arrived in the states. They haven’t been here that long. I think it’s great that they have agreed to support this cause which we’ve supported for years.”

The trailer also included a shot of Meghan and Harry photographed from above during their visit to Archbishop Tutu’s residence in Cape Town.

However, after the release of the trailer, Robert Jobson, the royal editor of the Evening Standard, claimed that the photo was not taken without the couple’s consent.

“This photograph used by Netflix and Harry and Meghan to suggest intrusion by the press is a complete travesty,” he wrote on Twitter.

The duke and duchess have also faced criticism over the trailer for their upcoming Netflix documentary, after fans noticed that many of the photos used appeared to be taken at events where Harry and Meghan were not present.

One photo used in the trailer appeared to have been taken in 2011, during a Harry Potter premiere, while another clip included in the trailer, which is meant to depict paparazzi surrounding the couple, appears to have been taken when Katie Price arrived at court in December, according to the BBC.

Taiwan news channel accidentally airs false report of Chinese invasion | Taiwan

A Taiwanese news channel has broadcast by mistake a fictional news alert that said Chinese armed forces had launched an invasion, firing missiles at cities and ports surrounding the capital, Taipei.

Several news captions declaring a violent attack by China’s People’s Liberation Army had been mocked up for forthcoming security drills, but were broadcast accidentally to Taiwanese viewers at 7am on Wednesday.

“New Taipei City was hit by communist missiles, the Taipei port has exploded, facilities and ships were damaged and destroyed,” the Chinese Television Systems (CTS) news ticker read.

“On the brink of war … The Chinese Communist party prepares for war … The president has issued an emergency order.”

The partly government-owned CTS station issued an on-air “clarification and apology” several hours later, saying the report had been created in conjunction with emergency services for the drills, but had been accidentally broadcast.

“[Yesterday] CTS news channel cooperated with the New Taipei City government fire bureau to record a disaster prevention video. On the 20th, due to a wrong setting by the production staff, we mistakenly flashed the messages from yesterday about the war and disaster prevention. People do not need to panic.”

The New Taipei fire department told the Guardian the fake news alerts were supposed to be shown on 5 May during the annual disaster response drills, which will this year include a missile attack scenario.

“The exercise includes an earthquake scene, tsunami, a bridge collapse and explosion,” a spokesperson said. “This year, our boss said we will also include the war scenario in the exercise … It is the first time in recent years.”

Taiwan’s defence minister, Chiu Kuo-cheng, said he had been “surprised to see the news”. Chiu said the army had responded quickly to verify and dispel the erroneous alert. The error was “a good lesson to our journalist friends”, he said.

Screenshots of the broadcast spread across Taiwan’s social media, with some people expressing worry, some laughing at the error, and others criticising the TV station and media in general. “An unforgivable mistake, and perhaps not a mistake,” said one. “It needs serious punishment, they made social panic,” said another.

In China, the error was viewed or discussed by more than a million people on Weibo, under the hashtag: “Taiwan media makes a big own goal.”

Taiwanese opposition politicians called for regulators to punish the station for creating panic. Li Yong-de, the minister for culture who overseas public broadcasting, apologised. In a statement, CTS offered a “sincere apology that this serious flaw has caused panic among the public and trouble to relevant units”, and said those responsible would be punished.

Taiwan has lived under the threat of invasion by neighbouring China for decades. The ruling Communist party considers Taiwan to be a breakaway province of China, and has not ruled out using force to “unify” it. Taiwan rejects Beijing’s claim, saying it is already an independent nation.

Under the increasingly authoritarian rule of Xi Jinping, China’s government and armed forces have raised economic, diplomatic, and military pressure on Taiwan, including disinformation and propaganda campaigns. In the last two years there has been a marked increase of air force sorties into Taiwan’s air defence identification zone, and other military exercises designed to intimidate Taiwan, whose air force scrambles in response to each incursion.

Taiwan is considered to be at the highest risk of invasion than in several decades, and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has sparked alarm among the island’s leaders and population, but few analysts or observers believe such an attack on Taiwan is imminent.

‘SNL’ goes without an audience and airs pre-taped sketches due to rising Covid-19 cases

“Tonight everyone at ‘Saturday Night Live’ planned to do our big Christmas show … but Covid came early this year,” Hanks said.

“And we sent home our cast, most of our crew, but I came here from California,” he said. “And if you think I was going to fly 3,000 miles and not be on TV, well, you have another thing coming.”

Hanks — who was wearing a robe with the number “5” emblazoned on it to celebrate inducting host Paul Rudd into “The Five Timers Club,” which is reserved for celebrities who have hosted five times — then brought out Tina Fey.

“This is not the smallest audience I’ve ever performed for,” Fey said. “I have done improv at a Macy’s.”

Hanks and Fey then brought out Rudd and welcomed him into “The Five Timers Club.”

“Thanks for coming,” Rudd said. “I’m extremely … disappointed.”

Hanks then pointed out that it wasn’t all so bad since Rudd was just named “The Sexist Man of the Year.”

“I think it was ‘Sexiest,'” Rudd remarked.

“Yeah, okay,” Hanks said back.

Kenan Thompson, “SNL’s” longest tenured cast member, then came out to honor Rudd joining the club.

“Whoa, where is everybody?” Thompson asked looking at the empty studio, before congratulating Rudd on hosting “4.5 times.”

Thompson explained that “SNL” would go on this weekend, but would be a little different. There would be be brand new sketches that were taped earlier this week as well as sketches from the past.

“It’s going to be a little bit like a new Beatles documentary,” Rudd said. “Lot of old footage, but enough new stuff that you’re like, ‘Okay, yeah, I’ll watch that.'”

Earlier Saturday, an NBC spokesperson said in a statement that “due to the recent spike in the Omicron variant and out of an abundance of caution, there will be no live audience for tonight’s taping of ‘Saturday Night Live.'”

Shortly after the show’s announcement, scheduled musical guest Charli XCX tweeted that “due to the limited crew at tonight’s taping of ‘SNL’ my musical performance will no longer be able to go ahead.”

“SNL” pulling its audience is just the latest live event in New York City to be disrupted by growing cases of Covid-19. That includes the cancellation of Broadway performances and the Radio City Rockettes’ “Christmas Spectacular” shows.

Ilhan Omar airs death threat and presses Republicans on ‘anti-Muslim hatred’ | Ilhan Omar

The US politician Ilhan Omar played a harrowing death threat left recently on her voicemail, as she implored House Republican leaders to do more to tamp down “anti-Muslim hatred” in their ranks and “hold those who perpetuate it accountable”.

The Democratic Minnesota representative, one of only a handful of Muslim members of Congress, has been the subject of repeated attacks by conservative pundits and some Republicans in Congress, which she says have led to an increase in the number of death threats she receives.

Recently a video of the first-term Colorado representative Lauren Boebert calling Omar a member of the “jihad squad” and likening her to a bomb-carrying terrorist went viral.

“When a sitting member of Congress calls a colleague a member of the ‘jihad squad’ and falsifies a story to suggest I will blow up the Capitol, it is not just an attack on me but on millions of American Muslims across the country,” Omar said during a news conference on Tuesday. “We cannot pretend this hate speech from leading politicians doesn’t have real consequences.”

She then played the voicemail, laden with profanity, racial epithets and a threat to “take you off the face of this fucking Earth”, which she said was among hundreds of such messages she has reported since joining Congress. Omar said the voicemail was left for her after Boebert released another video on Monday criticising her.

In the grainy recording, a man can be heard saying: “You will not be living much longer, bitch,” and that “we the people are rising up”. He calls Omar a “traitor” and says she will stand trial before a military tribunal.

Omar said: “It is time for the Republican party to actually do something to confront anti-Muslim hatred in its ranks and hold those who perpetuate it accountable.”

Boebert’s remarks were the latest example of a Republican lawmaker making a personal attack against another member of Congress, an unsettling trend that has gone largely unchecked by House Republican leaders.

A video posted to Facebook last week showed Boebert speaking at an event and describing an interaction with Omar – an interaction that Omar maintains never happened.

In the video, Boebert claims that a Capitol police officer approached her with “fret on his face” shortly before she stepped into a House elevator and the doors closed. “I look to my left and there she is, Ilhan Omar. And I said: ‘Well, she doesn’t have a backpack. We should be fine,’” Boebert says with a laugh.

Omar called on the House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, and the Republican minority leader, Kevin McCarthy, to “take appropriate action”. But so far McCarthy, who is in line to become Speaker if Republicans retake the majority next year, has been reluctant to police members of his caucus whose views often closely align with those of the party’s base.

Boebert initially took steps to ease the situation, apologising last week “to anyone in the Muslim community I offended”. But after declining to apologise directly to Omar during a tense phone call on Monday, which Omar abruptly ended, Boebert again went on the attack.

“Rejecting an apology and hanging up on someone is part of cancel culture 101 and a pillar of the Democrat party,” Boebert said in an Instagram video.

So far, McCarthy is taking her side. When asked on Tuesday what he would do if Democrats tried to censure Boebert, McCarthy said: “After she apologised personally and publicly? I’d vote against it.”

Pixel 6 ad airs early in Australia with starting price [Video]

Following leaks on Friday, a Pixel 6 ad has inadvertently aired two days early in Australia revealing the local starting price for the smaller phone and providing an overview of hardware features.

Instead of just a background soundtrack, this television ad captured by a Reddit user includes voiceover. After Google Tensor, the next aspect advertised is “Hours of power” from “Minutes of charging.” A previous marketing page leak suggested 1-50% in half an hour, while Google is pushing an “All day Adaptive Battery” estimate.

During this section, we see a phone on the 2nd-gen Pixel Stand and get the briefest glimpse at the under-display fingerprint sensor in action, though it was clearly done in post-editing. That said, we see a fingerprint icon on the always-on display that becomes a circle when tapped.

“Magic Eraser” is the next highlight to make “Photobombers disappear,” though the example used is zapping out a wedding proposal getting in the way of a skateboard trick.

The last feature advertised is the “Most layer of hardware security.” This ad closes on “The first-ever all-Google phone” and says the Pixel 6 will be available from AUD$999. The Pixel 5 was priced identically last year with 128GB of storage and that converts to $741~ today, but Google sold it for $699 stateside. An ending card notes availability at carrier Telstra, retailer JB Hi-Fi, and the online Google Store.

This local Australia ad is very similar to what leaked on Friday, but the key difference is the bigger focus on battery life and Pixel 6 hardware features. That generic ad did nothing to differentiate between the 6 and 6 Pro.

Phoenix Suns’ Chris Paul airs frustrations after team’s third straight loss

After losing a third straight game to drop to 8-8 on the season, a frustrated Chris Paul put it bluntly about the current state of the Phoenix Suns: They have to play better.

“We’re not …” Paul started, pausing briefly, “playing well enough right now. I’m not going to say we’re not good enough, but we’re not playing well enough right now.”

The Suns fell 102-97 at home on Wednesday to Paul’s former team, the Oklahoma City Thunder, with the final three minutes going the wrong way for Phoenix. The Thunder finished on an 11-2 run, with the Suns missing their final six shots.

Paul, who led the Thunder to a surprising 5-seed last season behind brilliant clutch-time play, scored a season-high 32 points in 35 minutes against OKC. But two clean looks in the final 20 seconds didn’t fall, the first being a go-ahead midrange turnaround that spun out of the rim, and the second a potential tying straightaway 3 that caught all air.

The Suns have been without All-Star guard Devin Booker the past two games because of a sore hamstring. While the team has missed his scoring ability, coach Monty Williams refused to acknowledge that, or anything else, as an excuse.

“Until this team understands consistency for four quarters, we’re going to feel like this a lot,” Williams said. “We can try to get everybody to feel sorry for us. It ain’t going to work. We’ve got to be consistent. This is on us.”

Williams, clearly aggravated in his two-minute postgame availability, harped on Suns’ need for consistency.

“Down the stretch, we had an unbelievably poor finish,” he said. “We have open shots, missing shots under the basket. It’s just poor. Poor execution and poor finishing. That’s it.

“At some point, you just have to finish out games and understand what it takes to be a really good team is consistency,” Williams said. “Period. That’s the deal.”

Williams made it known if he was going to be asked any question from that point on, he would answer the same way: consistency.

“Whatever you ask me, I’m going to say ‘consistency,'” Williams said. “That’s it.”

The Suns led by 15 at the end of the first quarter. But with sloppy turnovers and stagnant offense, they scored only 10 points in the second quarter, prompting a 21-4 run by OKC to take the lead heading to the break.

As Paul tends to do, he calmly settled into the game, deferring early but asserting himself late. He scored 13 points in the fourth quarter to give the Suns a late lead, but defensive lapses and bad offensive possessions led to Phoenix collapsing.

“We play in spurts,” Paul said. “We’ve gotta respect who we’re playing against. Every night. Respect the opponent. They get paid just like we do.”

For Paul and the Suns, a promising start to the season has slipped in the past three weeks. The addition of Paul had appeared to help sustain the momentum they built with their undefeated bubble run, but a disruption to their season with a three-game break from health and safety protocols and then Booker’s injury has brought it to a halt.

The Suns have lost five of their past six games, with pretty much all the recent losses being close calls — back-to-back overtime games against the Denver Nuggets not going their way, a four-point loss to the Memphis Grizzlies and a five-point loss to OKC.

“I’m just trying to figure out how we can win,” Paul said. “Because the losing stuff gets old.”
