Apple’s AirPods Can Work As Good As Expensive Hearing Aids, Study Finds

AirPods 2 performed similarly well to basic hearing aids in quiet environments.

Apple’s AirPods Pro earbuds can potentially act as hearing aids for adults with mild to moderate hearing loss, a new study published in the journal iScience revealed. The study was conducted by researchers from the Taipei Veterans General Hospital in Taiwan. Experts looked at 21 participants with mild to moderate hearing loss and tested a variety of hearing aids. These included premium and basic hearing aids and AirPods Pro earbuds and Airpods 2.

For the study, the AirPods were paired with an iPhone with the environmental noise amplifier app dubbed ‘Live Listen’ running. The participants were asked to wear the devices and listen to short sentences read by researchers. After that, they had to repeat the statement verbatim.

The researchers found that the AirPods 2 performed similarly well to basic hearing aids in quiet environments. In noisier environments, the AirPods Pro – which have a built-in noise cancelling feature – had comparable performance to the premium hearing aid – specifically when the noises came from the side of the participant. However, when the noises came from the front of the participants, both AirPods models failed to help participants hear better.

“These wireless earbuds are of course not perfect, but they would be a good starting point for many patients who don’t have access to professional hearing aids. They will see an increase in quality of life even with these earbuds,” said Yen-fu Cheng, the study’s corresponding author, as per Science Alert

Further, Mr Cheng also highlighted that many people would be more comfortable wearing Apple’s AirPods all the time as opposed to wearing hearing aids due to the social stigma around them. He even noted that people with hearing loss often require visiting health professionals for fitting and fine-tuning which gets cumbersome for many.

Therefore, as per the Taiwanese researchers, Apple AirPods Pro could potentially present a more accessible alternative for patients.

“Globally, the wireless earphone market is growing rapidly. Some companies are interested in exploring the possibility of designing earbuds with sound amplification features. Our study proves that the idea is plausible,” the researchers stated as per Science Alert.

iOS 16.1 Beta Brings Adaptive Transparency to Original AirPods Pro

The third beta of iOS 16.1 that was released earlier this week expands the Adaptive Transparency feature introduced with the second-generation AirPods Pro to the original ‌AirPods Pro‌.

As noted on Reddit, first-generation ‌AirPods Pro‌ owners who also have the AirPods beta software will now see an “Adaptive Transparency” toggle in the AirPods section of the Settings app. The 5A304A beta firmware is required to see the setting.

Apple debuted Adaptive Transparency with the ‌AirPods Pro‌ 2. It is designed to allow the AirPods to block out loud sounds, such as sirens, construction work, or loud speakers at a concert without blocking out all noise.

The ‌AirPods Pro‌ 2 have an upgraded H2 chip that allows for Adaptive Transparency to work, so it is not yet clear how Adaptive Transparency with the H1 chip in the original ‌AirPods Pro‌ works in comparison.

(Thanks, Aaron!)

AirPods Pro 2 Review – MacRumors

Apple’s second-generation AirPods Pro will begin arriving to customers and launch in stores on Friday, September 23. In advance, the first reviews of the wireless headphones have now been shared by select media publications and YouTube channels.

Priced at $249, the second-generation AirPods Pro feature improved audio quality, longer battery life, and up to 2x as much noise cancellation compared to the original AirPods Pro. They also feature swipe-based volume control, an improved built-in skin-detect sensor that more accurately turns on or off audio playback, and a new XS ear tip option.

The new AirPods Pro come with an updated charging case with a built-in speaker and U1 chip for Find My support with Precision Finding, an opening to attach a lanyard for carrying convenience, and IPX4-rated water and sweat resistance. In addition to Lightning and MagSafe, the case can now be charged with an Apple Watch charger.

We have rounded up both written and video reviews of the new AirPods Pro below.

Written Reviews

The Verge‘s Chris Welch said there are “substantial” improvements to active noise cancellation:

But Apple has made substantial gains with its active noise cancellation. The company says, on average, the new implementation is “up to” two times as effective as the original AirPods Pro. And while I lack any scientific measurement tools, that claim doesn’t seem unrealistic. At our office, I recently moved desks and now sit near an air vent that emits a persistent whir. The original AirPods Pro leave a trace of that in noise-canceling mode, but it’s completely hushed and imperceptible with the second-gen pair. I can still hear chatting co-workers if they walk directly next to my desk, but at most times, the AirPods Pro grant me plenty of serenity. I’ve also observed legitimate improvements when commuting on the subway, and less overall street noise makes its way through when traversing Brooklyn day to day.

Welch also noticed improved sound quality overall:

Let’s dig right into sound quality. Apple completely redesigned the amplifier and driver in the AirPods Pro, and while those drivers are the same 11-millimeter size as what’s in the third-gen AirPods, they sound superior and deliver the cleanest, most dynamic output of any AirPods to date.

Engadget‘s Billy Steele achieved around six hours of battery life as advertised:

During my tests, I managed six hours and fifteen minutes of use with a mix of noise cancellation, transparency mode and calls. That’s more than the previous generation (4.5 hours) and it’s on par with most of the competition these days. Sure, some companies offer 10-plus hours on a charge, but the average is around five to seven for the noise-canceling products I’ve tested. More battery life would always be nice, but the six or seven hours Apple musters is enough to get you through the workday if you take a short break.

Gizmodo‘s Andrew Liszewski said the new swipe-based volume control feature is a welcomed upgrade, but can be “a little finicky” on occasion:

It’s a welcome upgrade, but unfortunately one that I found a little finicky to make work. It occasionally required a couple of swipes before anything happened.

As someone who generally hates having to touch my earbuds while I’m wearing them (it inevitably dislodges them a little) I will probably continue to stick to using Siri voice commands for volume adjustments or track skipping (the one thing Siri does very well).

MobileSyrup‘s Patrick O’Rourke said swipe-based volume control is his favorite new AirPods Pro feature, providing for a more convenient listening experience:

In my experience, the new AirPods Pro volume touch controls are extremely responsive and work with subtle changes. If you, for example, only want to lower or raise the volume by a notch or two, you can do that with a brief swipe. The controls are also marked with a slight clicking noise, indicating they’re active and working. I didn’t run into any accidental presses during my several days with the AirPods Pro (2nd-Gen), even while long-pressing on the stem to toggle Active Noise Cancellation on/off or double-pressing to jump between songs.

On-device touch volume controls are by far my favourite new AirPods Pro feature. The convenience and ease of use of shifting volume levels directly on the AirPods Pro (2nd-Gen) without the need to take out my iPhone, really can’t be understated.

O’Rourke added that iOS 16’s Personalized Spatial Audio feature is not very noticeable:

In theory, I like the idea of audio being tuned specifically to the shape of your ear, but in practice, it doesn’t make much of a difference. It’s also worth noting that while I really like Spatial Audio when watching movies or TV shows on platforms like Apple TV+, I find it hit or miss with music, especially when a track wasn’t originally recorded with the technology in mind and has been remastered.

WIRED‘s Parker Hall said the charging case’s new built-in speaker “rings quite loudly” to assist with Find My location tracking, but he wishes the case had a USB-C port for wired charging instead of the usual Lightning connector:

Need to find the case via Apple’s Find My app? Now you can, and it rings quite loudly. It also makes a little jingle when it starts charging. Speaking of, you can wireless charge as usual (the case supports MagSafe too), but it’s a shame to see Apple still relying on the Lightning port instead of USB-C.

AirPods Pro 2 Charging Case With Three New Features Shown in Leaked Renders

A new charging case for the upcoming second-generation AirPods Pro could feature speaker holes, a microphone, and an opening for a lanyard attachment, according to alleged CAD renders of the case shared by AppleInsider‘s Andrew O’Hara on Twitter.

Alleged CAD of AirPods Pro 2 charging case shared by Andrew O’Hara

O’Hara said he could not verify the accuracy of the renders, but they do line up with previous rumors about the next AirPods Pro charging case.

The new charging case is expected to gain Find My support, allowing users to track the location of the case in the Find My app in the event it is lost or misplaced, even when the AirPods Pro are not placed in the case. Earlier this year, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said the case will be able to emit a sound when lost, which would explain the addition of speaker holes.

The renders also show a single hole for what could be a microphone, although it is unclear what it would be used for. One possibility is that the microphone could be used for Apple’s accessibility feature Live Listen, which can help someone to hear a conversation in a noisy area or across a room. The case’s microphone could take in sound and send it to the AirPods Pro that someone is wearing, making the sound easier to hear.

Last, the renders show a cutout in the right side of the case that is likely intended for a lanyard attachment seen in a previous leak. This feature would make it easier to attach an AirPods Pro case to a keychain without the need for an extra accessory.

It’s not obvious from the CADs whether the case has a Lightning connector like the current version or a USB-C port, but rumors suggest the case will stick with Lightning this year and switch to USB-C along with the iPhone 15 next year. The case has also supported MagSafe wireless charging since receiving a minor revision in October 2021.

It’s also likely the new AirPods Pro charging case will have IPX4-rated water and sweat resistance like the charging case for the third-generation AirPods. Currently, only the AirPods Pro earbuds have water resistance and not the case.

While the second-generation AirPods Pro are expected to have longer battery life thanks to a more power efficient H2 chip and potentially support for Bluetooth 5.2’s low-power LE Audio standard, it’s not clear if the battery in the new charging case will be any larger. The current AirPods Pro case is equipped with a 519 mAh battery.

Apple is expected to announce the new AirPods Pro by the end of 2022, but it’s not clear exactly when they will be unveiled. Other features rumored for the new AirPods Pro include improved in-ear detection, fitness tracking capabilities, and more.

AirPods Pro 2 No Longer Expected to Feature Built-In Heart Rate or Body Temperature Sensor

While past rumors have indicated the upcoming second-generation AirPods Pro will feature a built-in heart rate and body temperature sensor, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has cast doubt on those rumors turning out to be true, saying instead such a feature is unlikely to come anytime soon.

“Over the past few months, there have been rumors about this year’s model gaining the ability to determine a wearer’s heart rate or body temperature. I’m told that neither feature is likely to arrive in the 2022 upgrade,” Gurman writes in his latest Power On newsletter. Gurman adds that both features have been explored within Apple and could arrive someday.

Just last month, a rumor from 52Audio said that the ‌AirPods Pro‌ 2 would be able to measure heart rate and body temperature from within the ear. That same report said the ‌AirPods Pro‌ 2 would feature USB-C, an updated H1 chip, and Find My functionality. It remains to be seen if other aspects of the report will turn out to be accurate.

Apple has not given the ‌AirPods Pro‌ any updates since its launch in 2019 other than a new MagSafe charging case last fall. Apple is widely expected to announce a new version of the ‌AirPods Pro‌ later this year, possibly around the time it launches the iPhone 14 and new Apple Watch models this fall.

Kuo: AirPods Pro 2 to Feature Lossless Support and Sound-Emitting Charging Case

Apple’s second-generation AirPods Pro will feature support for Lossless audio and a charging case that can emit a sound for location tracking purposes, according to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

In a note to investors, seen by MacRumors, Kuo explained that the second-generation ‌AirPods Pro‌ will feature new selling points that will lead to strong demand, including support for Apple Lossless (ALAC) audio and a charging case that users can trigger a sound from to highlight its location.

It seems likely that this sound-emitting charging case will integrate into the Find My app, similar to how users can currently emit a sound from their individual AirPods inside the case to help find them. This lines up with alleged leaked photos of the next-generation AirPods Pro, which showed a charging case with speaker holes to emit a sound for location tracking, allowing the earbuds and the case to be located separately.

All of Apple’s current AirPods products, including the third-generation AirPods, ‌AirPods Pro‌, and AirPods Max, do not support Lossless audio. This is because AirPods play audio via Bluetooth, limiting them to the AAC codec. Higher quality Apple Lossless Audio Codec files may need to be streamed to AirPods directly to circumvent Bluetooth and enable a Lossless listening experience, but it is possible that Apple could develop an alternative solution.

Kuo also reiterated that the next-generation earbuds will feature a new design and launch in the fourth quarter of 2022, which is slightly later than the third-quarter prediction suggested by other rumors. Kuo still believes that AirPods may support health monitoring features in the future, but did not directly associate this rumor with the second-generation ‌AirPods Pro‌.

The updated AirPods Pro carry the same $249 price tag as the previous version and have no other changes beyond the case, but Amazon is already discounting the new model down to $219.99, a savings of $29. The new AirPods Pro are in stock with delivery available next week.

The discounted price still marks a $23 premium over the original version at the moment, with Amazon currently pricing the non-MagSafe version at $197.00. We even saw them go as low as $169.00 around Black Friday last year, so if MagSafe isn’t a necessity for you, you may still want to shop around for a good deal on the older ones.

AirPods and AirPods Pro make for popular gifts and we commonly see discounted pricing on them, especially leading into the holiday shopping season, so we’re likely to see more deals on these in the coming weeks, but it’s a good sign for supplies that we’re already seeing significant discounts right at launch.

We track sales for every model of the AirPods in our Best AirPods Deals guide, so be sure to bookmark that page while you shop around for the wireless headphones.

Apple Updates AirPods 2, AirPods Pro and AirPods Max Firmware to Version 4A400

Apple today released new firmware updates for the second-generation AirPods, the AirPods Pro, and the AirPods Max. All three of the AirPod models are now running 4A400 firmware, up from 3E751 for the standard ‌AirPods‌, 3E756 for the ‌AirPods Max‌, and 3E751 for the ‌AirPods Pro‌.

Apple has also released new firmware for the Beats Solo Pro, Powerbeats 4, and Powerbeats Pro.

Apple does not offer information on what’s included in refreshed firmware for the ‌AirPods Pro‌, so we don’t know what improvements or bug fixes the new firmware brings. The update likely adds Conversation Boost to the ‌AirPods Pro‌.

Conversation Boost is an iOS 15 feature that uses the beamforming microphones in the ‌‌AirPods Pro‌‌ to boost the volume level of conversations, which is ideal for those with mild to moderate hearing challenges.

There’s no standard way to upgrade the ‌‌AirPods‌‌‌ software, but firmware is generally installed over-the-air while the ‌‌‌AirPods‌‌‌ are connected to an iOS device. Putting the ‌‌‌‌‌‌AirPods‌‌‌‌‌‌ in the case, connecting the ‌‌‌‌‌‌AirPods‌‌‌‌‌‌ to a power source, and then pairing the ‌‌‌‌‌‌AirPods‌‌‌‌‌‌ to an iPhone or an iPad should force the update after a short period of time.

You can check your ‌‌‌‌AirPods‌‌‌ or ‌‌‌AirPods Pro‌‌‌‌ firmware by following these steps:

  • Connect your ‌‌‌AirPods‌‌‌ or ‌‌‌AirPods Pro‌‌‌ to your iOS device.
  • Open the Settings app.
  • Tap General.
  • Tap About.
  • Tap ‌‌‌‌‌‌AirPods‌‌‌‌‌‌.
  • Look at the number next to “Firmware Version.”

If we find notable changes after the firmware updates are installed, we’ll share details, but the software likely includes performance improvements and bug fixes.

Apple’s Dynamic Head Tracking Is Here If You Have Fany AirPods

Photo: Victoria Song/Gizmodo

Back in June, Apple introduced both lossless audio and Dolby Atmos-powered spatial audio to Apple Music. While there were restrictions on which gadgets could handle what, you didn’t need AirPods to get the benefit. However, with iOS 15’s public release, Apple’s also added Dynamic Head Tracking—and for that, you’re going to need either a pair of AirPods Pro or AirPods Max.

Quick refresher: Dolby Atmos is a specific surround sound format that allows you to simulate a three-dimensional space. What Apple refers to as spatial audio is like an extra layer on top of that thanks to Dynamic Head Tracking. How it works is, it fixes where the audio sounds like it’s coming from, regardless of where you are within that soundscape. So say you hear vocals coming from in front of you. If you turn your head to the right, the vocals will now sound like they’re coming from your left earphone. If you turn your head to the left, it’ll sound like it’s coming from your right earphone.

It’s a neat feature, but it won’t work unless you have AirPods—and the more expensive ones at that. The regular AirPods don’t support dynamic tracking; the only ones that do are the ludicrously expensive AirPods Max and the AirPods Pro. (That’s because the feature relies on accelerometers to detect your head movement.)

If you do have a pair of either the AirPods Pro or AirPods Max, all you have to do is update your iPhone or iPad to iOS 15 or iPadOS 15, respectively. (We have a handy guide on how to do that here.) Once you’ve done that, you just have to double-check that Atmos is enabled. You can do that by heading over to the Settings app, scrolling down to Music, then Audio. From there you should see the Dolby Atmos setting. Within Apple Music itself, there are also Spatial Audio playlists to get you started and Apple has since added a tutorial track featuring Olivia Rodrigo’s song “good 4 u” to demonstrate how it works.

That said, if you don’t have AirPods, that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy Dolby Atmos at all. You can. It’ll just be the “normal” kind. As for how it sounds, it’s impressive but slightly less noticeable for music—especially if you’re just listening to songs for background noise. In our experience, dynamic head tracking is much more noticeable when using AirPods to watch movies, particularly action scenes. Still, if immersive audio is your thing and you’ve got the gear, it’s a neat thing to try out for yourself.
