New Orleans Saints’ Marcus Maye arrested, accused of aggravated assault with firearm

METAIRIE, La. — New Orleans Saints safety Marcus Maye was arrested Thursday on a charge of aggravated assault with a firearm stemming from an alleged road rage incident that occurred in Metairie on Monday, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office said.

He has been released from custody after posting a $30,000 bond but was not present in the open portion of Saints practice on Thursday.

Maye’s attorney, Eric Hessler, denied the allegations in a statement obtained by NFL Network on Thursday.

“Marcus vehemently denies the allegation from a motor vehicle incident, and looks forward to defending himself when all the facts come out,” the statement said.

According to a news release from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, “Maye was identified as the driver of a black SUV that was involved in an incident in which he is accused of pointing a firearm at another vehicle that was occupied by several juvenile females.”

“We were made aware of it this morning and we’re still gathering all the information, so we’re not going to have a comment on it at this time until we get more information,” Saints coach Dennis Allen said after practice on Thursday.

Maye is already facing potential discipline from the NFL regarding an arrest on Feb. 22, 2021, when he was with the New York Jets, on charges of driving under the influence and misdemeanor charges of DUI/damage to property and person and leaving the scene of a crash and careless driving. His court date on Aug. 24 was continued until 9 a.m. ET on Nov. 16.

Maye, a sixth-year veteran who spent the first five seasons of his career with the Jets, was signed by the Saints to a three-year, $28.5 million contract in March as part of an overhaul in the secondary.

Maye and Tyrann Mathieu were both signed to replace Marcus Williams and Malcolm Jenkins.

Multistate manhunt for Ohio man charged with aggravated murder after 4 people fatally shot

The FBI is involved in a multistate manhunt for a man charged with aggravated murder in the fatal shooting of four people in Ohio.

The FBI has issued a wanted poster for 39-year-old Stephen Marlow, whom they said should be considered “armed and dangerous.” He has ties to Indianapolis, Chicago and Lexington, Kentucky, and “could be in one of these cities,” FBI Cincinnati said on Twitter.

Marlow is wanted in connection with the shooting deaths of four people in Butler Township, a small town north of Dayton on Friday, police said.

Police responding to reports of gunfire shortly before noon found the four victims suffering from gunshot wounds at “multiple crime scenes” in a residential area, the Butler Township Police Department said.

The four victims were pronounced dead at the scenes. They have not been identified by police.

Marlow was charged with four counts of aggravated murder on Friday and a state warrant was issued for his arrest, according to the FBI. A federal arrest warrant was also issued on Saturday after he was charged with “unlawful flight to avoid prosecution,” the FBI said.

Police responded to reports of gunfire in Butler Township, Ohio, Aug. 5, 2022. Four people were found fatally shot, police said.

Butler Township Police Chief John Porter said they don’t believe there is a continued threat to the neighborhood but “we will continue to have crews in the area in case Marlow would return,” he told reporters on Friday. The Dayton Police Department Bomb Squad was also contacted “out of an abundance of caution,” he said.

Neighbors were asked to review any video camera footage from that day.

Porter said police were working to determine “if there were any motive to this horrible tragedy” and did not have any further information on the investigation.

“This is the first violent crime in this neighborhood in recent memory,” Porter said.

Police responded to reports of gunfire in Butler Township, Ohio, Aug. 5, 2022. Four people were found fatally shot, police said.

Marlow is believed to have fled the area in a white 2007 Ford Edge SUV with the Ohio license plate JES9806, police said.

He was described by police as approximately 5’11”, 160 pounds with short brown hair and was last seen wearing shorts and a yellow T-shirt.

ABC News’ Matt Foster contributed to this report.

Lockdowns Aggravated the ‘Fragile Mental Health’ of the Chinese’

The Lancet medical journal took a pause from its progressive pandering this week to criticize China’s harsh Coronavirus lockdowns, insisting that the measures have intensified China’s already serious mental health problems.

The June 11 essay, attributed to the journal’s editorial board, notes that China’s lockdowns over the past two years “have often been the most stringent and frequent” among the varying national responses to the pandemic.

“Control policies, including school closures and stay-at-home orders, combined with the stress of the pandemic itself, will have exacerbated the already fragile mental health of many Chinese people,” the essay asserts.

A 2020 national survey on psychological distress conducted in China during the COVID-19 epidemic revealed that more than a third of respondents (35 percent) “experienced distress, including anxiety and depression,” the Lancet observed.

School closures as well were associated with “adverse mental health symptoms and behaviours among children and adolescents,” the essay added, and even as restrictions have been lifted, “widespread anxiety” continues over both adapting to a return to some normalcy and fear that the virus will return.

The current mental health situation is not an anomaly, the editors assert, since it “plays out against the wider backdrop of mental disorders in China,” which is ongoing.

“Mental health has long been neglected in China, partly because of a deep-rooted cultural stigma,” the Lancet said, and discussing mental health “remains taboo among many communities.”

Families of patients worry “about how a disclosure of mental illness might damage their reputation,” and fear of being ostracized “will undoubtedly disincentivise people with mental disorders from seeking care,” the essay added.

In a rare direct chastisement of Beijing, the Lancet notes that China’s anti-coronavirus policies have been “extreme,” occasioning massive negative side-effects.

“The Chinese Government has vigourously defended its dynamic zero COVID-19 strategy,” the editors state. “But China’s lockdowns have had a huge human cost.”

This cost will “continue to be paid in the future, with the shadow of mental ill-health adversely affecting China’s culture and economy for years to come,” the journal warns. “The Chinese Government must act immediately if it is to heal the wound its extreme policies have inflicted on the Chinese people.”

Jorge Masvidal arrested on aggravated battery, criminal mischief charges following alleged assault on Colby Covington

Jorge Masvidal has been arrested and charged in the wake of his alleged assault against Colby Covington in Miami Beach, Fla.

According to online records, Masvidal was arrested on charges of aggravated battery/great bodily harm as well as criminal mischief. He’s currently being held on $15,000 bond in Miami.

If convicted of the current charges, Masvidal could potentially face significant time behind bars with aggravated battery considered a second-degree felony with up to 15 years in prison and/or a $10,000 fine. Criminal mischief can also result in jail time and/or fines as well.

Masvidal’s arrest comes in the wake of an altercation that allegedly took place outside Papi Steak Restaurant late Monday night where Covington was having dinner with The Nelk Boys, a popular podcast group that frequents UFC events.

Police responded to a call and later stated in a report that the victim, who MMA Fighting identified as Covington, told authorities that he was leaving the restaurant when the alleged assailant ran up and punched him twice. Covington suffered a fractured tooth and an abrasion on his wrist from the assault.

Covington identified Masvidal as his alleged attacker while saying that the veteran UFC fighter shouted “you shouldn’t have been talking about my kids” during the altercation. Covington said he recognized Masvidal’s voice as well as his hair sticking out of his hoodie.

Masvidal seemed to address the altercation later that same night when he posted a video on Twitter saying “call this the show your face challenge … what’s up, I’m from Dade county. You talk that s*** you’ve got to back it up. That’s how my city rolls.”

On Wednesday, Masvidal addressed the situation while appearing in a meeting with the Nevada State Athletic Commission where he tabled an application he had pending for a promoter’s license in the state.

“I had a mutual combatant with another athlete, and you know, I can’t say too much on this, but if we could table [the application] for later, that would be amazing,” Masvidal said.

At the time, Masvidal hadn’t been charged with any crimes but that changed late Wednesday night when he was taken into custody and placed under arrest.
