NFL Playoffs: Cincinnati Bengals beat Buffalo Bills just weeks after Damar Hamlin’s collapse

After the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles beat the Jacksonville Jaguars and New York Giants respectively, all eyes were on the remaining Divisional Round matchups Sunday, with the Buffalo Bills facing the Cincinnati Bengals and the San Francisco 49ers hosting the Dallas Cowboys.
The Bills fell to the Bengals 27-10, and the 49ers defeated the Cowboys 19-12.
Here’s what else you need to know.
Twenty days after suffering cardiac arrest in a game against the Cincinnati Bengals, Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin was in attendance as the Bills once again faced the Bengals, this time in the Divisional Round of the NFL Playoffs at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park, New York.
But the Bengals prevailed despite Buffalo’s homefield advantage and the emotional lift of having Hamlin in the stadium.
The CBS broadcast of the game showed Hamlin arriving by cart and entering the Bills’ locker room wearing sunglasses, a face covering and a jacket sold through his Chasing M’s clothing line with a hood pulled up. Hamlin’s mother Nina, father Mario, and younger brother Damir were also shown entering the stadium.
Later, a video posted to social media showed Hamlin walking from the locker room to an elevator while being shielded by security officials.
During the game, Hamlin’s attendance was announced on the stadium public address system, drawing an ovation from the crowd at Highmark Stadium. CBS showed video of Hamlin hyping up the crowd by making his signature heart-shaped gesture with his hands and urging the crowd to make noise by raising his arms.
With a steady snow falling in western New York and all the emotion tilting in the Bills’ direction, the Bengals came out of the gate strong. A pair of Joe Burrow touchdown passes gave Cincinnati an early 14-0 lead, and the Bengals took a 17-7 lead into halftime.
The Bengals maintained a comfortable advantage, leading by 14 points heading into the fourth quarter, while the Cincinnati defense stifled the Buffalo offense throughout the contest. The Bills’ attack could never get any momentum going and only managed to get into the end zone one time in the game.
Cincinnati now advances to face the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship game. The Chiefs will host the Bengals at Arrowhead Stadium next Sunday with kickoff scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET.
The San Francisco 49ers defeated the Dallas Cowboys 19-12 to advance to the team’s second consecutive NFC championship game on Sunday.
The San Francisco defense came out swinging, shutting down the Cowboys’ elusive offense. Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott struggled against the unit, throwing for 206 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. One of Dallas’ bright spots on offense was wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, who finished with 117 yards receiving.
49ers rookie quarterback sensation Brock Purdy continued to go from Mr. Irrelevant to Mr. Relevant. He improved to 7-0 as the starter after taking over for an injured Jimmy Garropolo in mid-December. Purdy threw for 214 yards in the win.
The Cowboys’ kicking struggles seemed to continue from last week’s win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Kicker Brett Maher got off to another rough start, having his extra point blocked after missing four extra-point attempts the previous week. Maher would go on to rebound from the blocked kick, knocking down two field goals afterward.
The 49ers will now head to Philadelphia to play the Eagles in the NFC championship game and have a chance to clinch their spot in the Super Bowl for the second time since 2019. The game is scheduled for next Sunday at 3 p.m. ET.
Super Bowl LVII is scheduled for February 12 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
Joe Burrow: Bengals quarterback says team has ‘mixed’ feelings about playing next game

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow says he “probably wants to play” his team’s next game but also understands that others don’t in the aftermath of Damar Hamlin’s collapse on Monday.
Buffalo Bills safety Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest when playing against the Bengals, an incident which left players from both teams visibly distressed and led to the game’s postponement.
While the world waits anxiously for more updates on Hamlin’s condition, the NFL announced Wednesday that the Bengals’ game against the Baltimore Ravens is still scheduled for 1 p.m. ET in Cincinnati on Sunday.
“We haven’t had that discussion as a team,” Burrow told reporters when asked if the team felt comfortable playing at the weekend.
“There’s definitely some side discussions about that, but that’s not where we’re at right now. So we’ve got a game to play on Sunday.”
Hamlin’s heartbeat was restored on the field as staff tended to him, the Bills have said, before he was taken to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.
Hamlin remains under intensive care, though he has been showing “signs of improvement” his team said in a statement Wednesday.
It is still unclear what led to the cardiac arrest. CNN has requested comment from the hospital system, which is not releasing information about Hamlin or providing interviews with his medical staff.
Burrow, who was on the field when Hamlin collapsed, says there is no consensus within his team regarding fulfilling their next fixture.
“We have not been asked that,” added Burrow when asked if the players had been consulted about playing.
“I’m sure if you polled the locker room there would be mixed votes on that. Personally, I think playing is going to be tough, but there’s people that want to play, too, and there’s people that don’t.
“Personally, I probably want to play. I think getting back to as normal as you can as fast as you can is personally how I kind of deal with these kinds of things. But like I said, everyone has a different way of dealing with it.”
Burrow added that the team has been preparing as usual for Sunday’s game but that it remains “a scary, emotional time” for everyone involved.
“Unfortunate as it is, we got a game to play on Sunday,” he said.
“It’s our job to get out there and execute and play the game the way that we need to play it to go and win. It is what it is.
“We’ve had discussions as a team about what happened and about where we’re at going forward and that’s where we’re at.”

Myles Garrett: Cleveland Browns defensive end released from hospital after car crash

Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett has been released from hospital after he was involved in a car crash in Sharon Township, about 40 miles south of Cleveland, his agent Nicole Lynn confirmed to CNN on Tuesday.
Garrett and a passenger were transported to the hospital with what Ohio State Highway Patrol Sergeant Ray Santiago called “non-life-threatening injuries.”
Just before 3 p.m. on Monday, troopers responded to a report of a rollover crash and injury, Ohio State Highway Patrol Sergeant Ray Santiago told CNN.
“When troopers arrived on scene, they discovered a gray Porsche 911 Turbo S off the right side of the roadway with rollover damage,” Santiago said.
The extent of Garrett’s injuries is not known at this time, but his agent Lynn tweeted that the player “has been alert and responsive” following the “one-car accident.”
“The Garrett family would like to thank the medical personnel that got Myles and his passenger out of the vehicle and safely transported to the hospital,” Lynn said in the statement.
CNN has reached out to the Cleveland Browns for more information.
The crash is still under investigation, Santiago said, adding that both the football player and his passenger were wearing seat belts and impairment from drugs or alcohol is not suspected.
Garrett is a three-time Pro Bowler and was named first team All-Pro each of the last two seasons.
After defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers 29-17 on Thursday, the Browns are scheduled to play in Atlanta against the Falcons this upcoming Sunday.
