Oklahoma police ‘actively looking’ for missing 4-year-old Athena Brownfield with infrared helicopters, boats

A 4-year-old girl from Cyril, Oklahoma, is still missing after she disappeared earlier this week and authorities are asking for the public to assist in the investigation.

Athena Brownfield has been missing since last Tuesday, and the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) and Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) have deployed infrared helicopters, boats, four-wheelers, and personnel on the ground to search the nearby area in an effort to locate her, according to the OHP Trooper Eric Foster.

“We’ve been in the air in helicopters with infrared, on the ground, around town there have been a lot of grid searches on foot and on four-wheelers, things like that,” Foster said during a press conference Wednesday afternoon, FOX 25 reported. “Our Emergency Response Team (ERT), which is specially trained to go on foot in search of people and things, are out in coordination with civilians who have come and wanted to volunteer their time and effort.”

The bureau’s PIO Brook Arbeitman confirmed this information, adding: “We are still very actively looking for her using all of our tools. We are finding things that we hope might give us clues as to where she is, but we are still actively looking for her.”

Athena Brownfield, 4, has been missing since at least Tuesday and authorities are continuing to search for her.

MISSING MADALINA COJOCARI SEARCH EXPANDS IN WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA: REPORT

Authorities also utilized Oklahoma Department of Corrections dogs to help search, per the report.

“This is a very active and ongoing investigation, and right now our top priority is locating her. And sorting out who is responsible will come next. We need to find this little girl,” Arbeitman said. “She’s on her own in the elements. So, is that endangered? Yeah. But is she the victim of physical harm? That’s yet to be determined.”

This ground search continued all Wednesday but concluded after volunteers searched “the entire town,” Arbeitman said.

“Today at 4 p.m., the Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) Emergency Response Team (ERT) concluded a grid search with local volunteers. Those volunteers have been released after searching the entire town, every known vacant house and local waterways,” OSBI added in a separate statement Wednesday afternoon.

It added: “Currently, the Oklahoma Department of Corrections (ODOC) has search dogs in the area and the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs (OBNDD) flew their drones over the community.”

Athena was reported missing around 2 p.m. Tuesday after a postal worker found her 5-year-old sister alone near their residence in Cyril, which is located about 70 miles (113 km) southwest of Oklahoma City.

The older girl was described as frightened but not needing medical care.

CALIFORNIA AUTHORITIES SAY FINDING MISSING 5-YEAR-OLD IS ‘TOP PRIORITY’ AS SEARCH RESUMES WEDNESDAY MORNING

It is not clear how long she had been missing before her disappearance was reported.

“We’re still working on putting together an exact timeline,” Arbeitman said.

Details regarding the home where the girls were staying are also not immediately clear and the whereabouts of the girls’ parents or guardians at the time of Athena’s disappearance are not known.

“That’s part of the ongoing investigation,” Arbeitman said Wednesday morning when asked about who was supposed to be watching the girls, according to KOCO News.

The 5-year-old has been placed in protective custody.

BODY FOUND BURIED IN DETROIT IDENTIFIED AS MISSING WOMAN

Many details about the 4-year-old, who authorities initially said was 3 but have since corrected, are not known. Subsequently, an Amber Alert has not been issued as her disappearance does not meet specific guidelines, Foster said.

“There’s specific guidelines and things that we have to follow,” he explained. “Not every part of that guideline came into play in this. So the next best thing that we could do was issue a Missing and Endangered notification that went out in a 15-mile radius from where she went missing.”

Law enforcement officials are continuing to conduct interviews and are reviewing surveillance videos in the area. They are also asking anyone with doorbell cameras or footage of the area near the 200 block of West Nebraska to turn over their resources to help in these efforts.

“The entire law enforcement community assisting with locating Athena appreciates local volunteers, restaurants, churches and all the tips that have been phoned in,” the OSBI said.

Residents are encouraged to search their own property for Athena.

Fox News Digital is aware of social media posts regarding Athena’s parents or details surrounding her living situation but the OSBI is advising people and outlets not to share unconfirmed details as it could hinder the investigation.

Anyone with information about Athena Brownfield’s disappearance is asked to contact the Cyril Police Department directly at (580) 464-2216, the OSBI tip line at 800-522-8017 or email tips@osbi.ok.gov

How many people are still actively playing MultiVersus 1 month after its massive launch?

MultiVersus smashed concurrent player records for fighting games upon launch and managed to be the top-earning video game in the United States for July, but the game’s been out just over a month now.

How many people are still actively playing Warner Bros.’ big step into the platform fighting game space now that the initial days and weeks of hype have started to cool off?

While we unfortunately can’t access the player data of console users, Steam Charts thankfully allows us to get an idea of who is sticking around at least on PC / Steam.

We ended up examining MultiVersus’ performance on Steam over its first week after the open beta went live to all compared to this past week, and there’ve been some pretty significant changes.

Even with the release of Morty just days ago, MVS’ daily peaks over the past week averaged around 29,608 users.

That’s still basically double the player count of the second-most popular fighter on Steam, Brawlhalla, but it does not stack up close to when it was breaking records a month ago.

The average MultiVersus peaks over the game’s first week were a whopping 142,920 concurrent players, which means only about 20% of the amount of that crowd are continuing to regularly go online.

Now, big player drops after the first month are expected in any video game that initially peaks at launch. We see it all the time.

It’s just the level of how much MVS did go down that we’re not as much used to seeing.

These comparisons won’t be fully congruent since Steam Charts doesn’t get that granular with data in titles that have been out for months / years, but it’s the best we can do.

Other fighting games like Street Fighter 5 and Guilty Gear Strive both saw a drop of about 50% from their peaks through their second month.

Those titles were full-priced $60 games, however, and MultiVersus is free-to-play and widely available for just about anyone to try — so it makes sense that more people would try MVS out when it was blowing up before dropping off after a few days / weeks.

Brawlhalla, despite being free-to-play as well, isn’t good for comparisons either because that game actually grew larger and larger over time.

We did, however, attempt to draw some similarities between MVS and another f2p cross-platform game with a big initial push, Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel.

From Master Duel’s peak at 262,333 players on Steam through its second month, the game’s average playerbase fell by around 67%.

That’s much closer to what we’re seeing with MVS’ numbers compared to our usual fighting affairs, but there’s still a noticeable gap there (though again that’s comparing weeks to whole months, so it’s not perfect either).

As something of a new beast in the space of fighters, it’s difficult to fully gauge what the current numbers mean about the game’s trajectory.

The fact that MultiVersus is still technically in an open beta state where features of the game aren’t finished throws a wrench in there too.

It’s also important to remember that these figures only account for the Steam users and not those on PlayStation, Xbox or the Epic Games Store.

Even if the playerbases were even with PC on console, that’s still like over 90,000 players going online at the same time each day, which is pretty wild next to what we’re used to for fighting games.

But the numbers are probably even higher than the consoles too.

MultiVersus is certainly in no danger of burning out any time soon, especially considering the game has already crossed 20 million downloads in total.

How the developers continue to handle the first season and eventually move away from open beta will likely have the biggest impact on the game’s performance for the foreseeable future.

They’ve gotten off to a historic start so far, but the true test begins now.

Nintendo Is ‘Actively Investigating’ Recent Claims of Sexual Misconduct

Nintendo of America is currently investigating claims of sexual misconduct.

A company-wide message (via Kotaku) from president Doug Bowser explained that Nintendo acknowledges the “media coverage involving claims made about worker conduct.”

“We have strict policies designed to protect our employees and associates from inappropriate conduct and expect full compliance with these policies by all who work for or with us,” said Bowser. “We have and will always investigate any allegations we become aware of, and we are actively investigating these most recent claims.”

Nintendo has come under fire following claims that female contractors face a “frat house” environment with sexual harassment and misconduct claims.

“Nintendo was almost like a nightmare,” one contractor told Kotaku. “It’s sad because I love Nintendo; I grew up with Nintendo. I was so excited to join Nintendo when I first got there, and I thought I was going somewhere. I had my supervisors telling me I was doing such a good job.”

Another claimed that “[product testing] really felt like a frat house sometimes.”

They reportedly encountered jokes about gender stereotypes and female characters who go their skirts flipped. She alleges that when she complained, she was simply told she had to be “tough enough” to work in product testing.

“I have had people act in a way that made me uncomfortable, then asked me not to go to HR about it because I’d be ‘misinterpreting,’ making me feel guilty about my own discomfort,” said another tester. “I never felt as included in things or as respected.”

Back in November last year, Nintendo condemned sexual harassment allegations at Activision Blizzard calling reports “disturbing”.

“Along with all of you, I’ve been following the latest developments with Activision Blizzard and the ongoing reports of sexual harassment and toxicity at the company,” said Bowser at the time. “I find these accounts distressing and disturbing. They run counter to my values as well as Nintendo’s beliefs, values, and policies.”

Activision Blizzard Lawsuit Timeline: The Story So Far

Now, it’s Nintendo that’s under scrutiny, and Bowser wants to assure employees that Nintendo of America is taking it seriously.

“Please remember that our HR teams are here to support you,” he wrote. “If you experience, have experienced, witness, or have witnessed anything concerning such behavior that is contrary to our Standards of Conduct, employee handbook, or Company Values, please immediately contact your HR Business Partner.”

Apple security flaw ‘actively exploited’ by hackers to fully control devices | Apple

Apple has disclosed serious security vulnerabilities for iPhones, iPads and Macs that could potentially allow attackers to take complete control of these devices.

On Wednesday the company said it was “aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited”.

Apple released two security reports about the issue on Wednesday, although they didn’t receive wide attention outside of tech publications.

Security experts have advised users to update affected devices – the iPhones 6S and later models; several models of the iPad, including the fifth generation and later, all iPad Pro models and the iPad Air 2; and Mac computers running MacOS Monterey. It also affects some iPod models.

Apple’s explanation of the vulnerability means a hacker could get “full admin access to the device” so that they can “execute any code as if they are you, the user,” said Rachel Tobac, CEO of SocialProof Security.

Those who should be particularly attentive to updating their software are “people who are in the public eye” such as activists or journalists who might be the targets of sophisticated nation-state spying, Tobac said.

The company did not give specifics on how many users were affected by the vulnerability. In all cases, it cited an anonymous researcher.

Commercial spyware companies such as Israel’s NSO Group are known for identifying and taking advantage of such flaws, exploiting them in malware that surreptitiously infects targets’ smartphones, siphons their contents and surveils the targets in real time.

NSO Group has been blacklisted by the US commerce department. Its spyware is known to have been used in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America against journalists, dissidents and human rights activists.

Security researcher Will Strafach said he had seen no technical analysis of the vulnerabilities that Apple has just patched. The company has previously acknowledged similarly serious flaws and, in what Strafach estimated to be perhaps a dozen occasions, has noted that it was aware of reports that such security holes had been exploited.

Nintendo Says It’s “Actively Investigating” Most Recent Misconduct Claims

Image: Nintendo

Yesterday, Kotaku published a report with a new round of accusations against both Nintendo of America and contracting firm Aston Carter.

In an update, the same outlet has now seen an internal message (sent out by NoA’s president Doug Bowser to employees) regarding the “media coverage involving claims made about worker conduct”.

Here’s exactly what Bowser had to say:

We have strict policies designed to protect our employees and associates from inappropriate conduct and expect full compliance with these policies by all who work for or with us. We have and will always investigate any allegations we become aware of, and we are actively investigating these most recent claims.”

Please remember that our HR teams are here to support you. If you experience, have experienced, witness, or have witnessed anything concerning such behavior that is contrary to our Standards of Conduct, employee handbook, or Company Values, please immediately contact your HR Business Partner.

NoA’s president previously issued an internal message to staff in May about “alleged working conditions at Nintendo”. You can learn more about the latest misconduct claims in the story we ran here on Nintendo Life yesterday.

Update Chrome now to patch actively exploited zero-day

Enlarge / It’s a good time to restart or update Chrome—if your tabs love you, they’ll come back.

Getty Images

Google announced an update on Wednesday to the Stable channel of its Chrome browser that includes a fix for an exploit that exists in the wild.

CVE-2022-2856 is a fix for “insufficient validation of untrusted input in Intents,” according to Google’s advisory. Intents are typically a way to pass data from inside Chrome to another application, such as the share button on Chrome’s address bar. As noted by the Dark Reading blog, input validation is a common weakness in code.

The exploit was reported by Ashley Shen and Christian Resell of the Google Threat Analysis Group, and that’s all the information we have for now. Details of the exploit are currently tucked behind a wall in the Chromium bugs group and are restricted to those actively working on related components and registered with Chromium. After a certain percentage of users have applied the relevant updates, those details may be revealed.

Google says the update—104.0.5112.101 for Mac and Linux and 104.0.5112.102/101 for Windows—will “roll out over the coming days/weeks,” but you can (and should) manually update Chrome now (check the “About” section of your settings).

There are 10 other security fixes included in the update. Dark Reading notes that this is Chrome’s fifth zero-day vulnerability disclosed in 2022.

Kyrie Irving trade rumors: Lakers, Nets actively discussing deal involving Russell Westbrook, per report

The Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Lakers are making progress on a trade that would swap Kyrie Irving and Russell Westbrook, according to Chris Haynes. Other pieces would have to be involved, but there is “palpable optimism” that the two sides can figure out a deal this summer.

Irving recently opted into the final year of his deal worth $36.4 million but is expected to be traded after his star teammate Kevin Durant requested a trade from the Nets. “If Kevin Durant is on the first train out, Kyrie Irving will be on the caboose as far as the Nets are concerned,” Brian Windhorst reported earlier this week

Coming off a season in which he played just 29 games because he refused to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, and given his previous injury history — Irving hasn’t played 70 games in a season since 2017 when he was still with the Cleveland Cavaliers — the market for the mercurial guard is understandably not as robust as the one for Durant.

The Lakers, though, have very little to lose. Irving represents their best chance to add talent this summer, and he has a previous relationship with LeBron James. Both players will be hitting free agency next season, and the Lakers are trying to squeeze one more title out of the LeBron and Anthony Davis pairing. Irving has his fair share of negatives, but on the court he would be a much better fit than Westbrook, and would greatly increase the Lakers’ title odds.

Of course, trading Westbrook is much easier said than done; the Lakers have been trying to do so since the middle of last season, just months after they originally acquired him. He recently opted into the final year of his contract, which is worth $47 million, which makes a trade tricky from a logistical perspective. Plus, there’s the fact that he’s well past his prime, but still needs the ball in his hands the majority of the time to be effective at all.

There really aren’t any basketball situations that make sense, but the Nets are in a bad spot after the Durant trade request, and might be willing to take Westbrook on as an expiring contract if they can move Irving and coax some concessions out of the Lakers. In particular, the Nets will be eager to acquire some draft picks given how many they owe the Houston Rockets in the coming years via the James Harden trade.

Per Haynes, draft compensation is currently one of the biggest sticking points in completing a trade. The Lakers are also out a bunch of future draft picks via the Anthony Davis deal, and were previously unwilling to attach future first-round picks to move Westbrook. If they can get Irving, though, it may be worth the price. Furthermore, the teams apparently don’t agree on the other players to be involved. Most notably, the Nets want to move Joe Harris, who has two years and $38.6 million remaining on his contract and is coming off ankle surgery, while the Lakers are pushing to get Seth Curry instead.

It does not appear that a deal is imminent at this point, but if the two sides are this far along in discussions it may not be long before Irving is reunited with LeBron and wearing the purple and gold.
