Smash Bros Pro Hurt Jumping From Illegal Taxi On Way To Tourney

Just trying to get away from the fakes.

A big fighting game tournament, Genesis 9, took place from January 20-23 in San Jose, California. Top talent from around the world, including Super Smash Bros. competitors Leonardo “MkLeo” Lopez and Samuel “Dabuz” Buzby, gathered at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center to play games like Guilty Gear Strive and Rivals of Aether. But for one Super Smash Bros. Melee pro, British player Elliot “Frenzy” Grossman, the Genesis 9 tournament started with an illegal taxi and, he claims, a near kidnapping.

“Got tricked into an illegal taxi coming out of [the San Francisco International Airport] and nearly got kidnapped,” Frenzy tweeted on January 19 with a picture of his scarred-up right hand. “Jumped out of the car after seeing the police chase after the vehicle and very luckily only bruised and scraped my hand and back. In the hospital [right now], [but I have] no idea how anything works here [to be honest].”

You might be wondering what the hell Frenzy’s talking about, as it sounds like some action movie stunt with Tom Cruise or something. Well, as it turns out, the Falco main, who was making his way to the Genesis 9 tourney, encountered some…complications when he touched down in California.

“So, I had just got off an 11-hour flight from London Heathrow Airport to San Francisco International Airport,” Frenzy told Kotaku in an email. “I was planning to get an Uber to my hotel in San Jose, but my phone had run out of battery on the way and wifi was often spotty at the airports. I decided to get a taxi instead and so, I walked out to the taxi stand.”

Frenzy is a pro Melee player for the British esports organization Reason Gaming. Hailing from England and maining Falco, he is the UK’s second-best player and the 47th-best Melee competitor in the world as of 2022. His record speaks for itself, though. He regularly places in the top 10 bracket at most tournaments he participates in and has a few first-place wins under his belt as well, with his last one being at the Galint Melee Open: Fall Edition 2022 back in November. The dude can game! However, he wasn’t prepared for the game of California transportation.

Beyond the Summit

“A driver approaches me and asked if I was looking for a taxi, to which I replied yes and then asked where I was going as per usual,” Frenzy said. “He shows me to the car and opens the door for me to get in with my things and as I close the door and belt up, I look out of the window and see multiple police officers with weapons drawn running towards the vehicle and shouting ‘Stop the vehicle!’ and ‘Get out!’ The driver ignores this and then accelerated immediately as I was still getting in and belting up, at which point I knew that I had made a massive mistake. In the moment I just decided that if I got out quick enough, it was safer than either the driver getting away and being at his mercy or getting involved in a police chase which could end in a crash at higher speeds.”

“When I turned around to put my seatbelt on, I saw multiple cops running out to surround the car out of the window,” Frenzy said. “They had guns drawn. The driver then accelerated, foot to the floor, and tried to get away. That was when I decided to bail out. I was familiar with this sort of thing happening from the internet, but I was caught completely off guard by this specific attempt, so I knew exactly what was going on.”

Frenzy said he was in “such an adrenaline rush” that things went blurry. One minute, he was buckling his seatbelt to head to Genesis 9. The next, he was “rolling on the ground” after jumping out of the fake taxi cab. He said he “didn’t land badly or have anything else on the road” near him to cause further injury as he rolled onto the asphalt, the car going around 15-20mph. Still, he was in “pretty serious pain,” with a backpack only somewhat cushioning his tumble and his right hand taking most of the impact. The Mills-Peninsula Emergency Department in Burlingame said Frenzy didn’t break anything but had “really bad swelling, abrasions, and bruising” on his right hand as well as “friction burns” on his back from rolling on gravel and “low blood pressure” for a while. He also got in touch with cops after the incident for a quick police report.

“The cops asked a lot about what the criminal’s exact actions were and they explained they had been after this guy that had been running this scheme for a while,” Frenzy said. “They gave me some information about the case number and who to contact. I’m not 100% sure how they caught the vehicle or the criminal as I was recovering from the jump, but I saw he was in handcuffs far away as I was being attended to later on.”

A San Francisco Police Department officer told Kotaku over the phone that, although they couldn’t divulge any specific information about the incident, Frenzy’s case is real and an “ongoing investigation” is currently in progress. The officer also told Kotaku that the individual conducting the investigation will give us a callback, but that hasn’t happened yet.

“These sorts of schemes are all over the world and, as a pretty experienced traveller, I’m usually aware of them,” Frenzy said. “However, in a lapse of judgement and after a long flight, I got tricked. They try to trick you by positioning close to where the legitimate taxi stands are and even color their cars in the same layout as legit ones. They will approach people, especially those who are on their own or who are tourists, and ask if they are looking for a taxi and where they are going. Because of this, I usually tend to stick to ride share apps when traveling, but on this occasion my phone was out of battery so I was in a rough situation.”

In the end, Frenzy made it to Genesis 9 to play some Super Smash Bros. Melee thanks to the help of the tournament’s organizers. After taking a day or two to heal up, he said he felt good enough to compete. He didn’t place that well, getting 49th in the tournament. However, he said the “event itself was amazing even despite what happened” and is “eager to return in full form next year.” Here’s hoping he gets there much safer next time.

Bayonetta’s Original Voice Actor Disputes Claims, Says She Only Asked For ‘A Fair, Living Wage’

Image: Bayonetta 3

Hellena Taylor, the original voice actor for PlatinumGames’ Bayonetta and one of the parties at the centre of a prolonged and messy public dispute over casting and wages, has tonight issued a new statement addressing allegations that have been made against her over the past week.

The saga, which has seen claims of underpayment made, voice actors abused and a prominent developer temporarily disappear from Twitter, began when Taylor made a series of recent videos in which she accused PlatinumGames of offering her an insultingly-low pay offer to reprise her role as Bayonetta for the upcoming third game.

The role was subsequently given to Jennifer Hale—who has issued her own statements—while a Bloomberg report said PlatinumGames had originally offered to pay Taylor somewhere between $3,000 and $4,000 per four-hour session for at least five recording sessions, for a total of at least $15,000. It’s then said that when Taylor instead asked for a “six-figure sum” to voice the character, negotiations broke down.

Tonight, Taylor wrote a series of Tweets disputing some of the figures in these reports, saying:

It has come to my attention that some people are calling me a liar and golddigger. I feel the need to defend myself and my reputation in the industry.

As I posted on part three of my video thread. I explained that their first offer was too low. That offer was 10,000 dollars total. Remember, this is 450 million dollar franchise, (not counting merchandise.) I then wrote in Japanese to Hideki Kamiya, asking for what I was worth. I thought that as a creative, he would understand. He replied saying how much he valued my contribution to the game and how much the fans wanted me to voice the game. I was then offered an extra 5,0000! [Note: it appears this is a typo, and that Taylor means 5,000]

So, I declined to voice the game. I then heard nothing from them for 11 months. They then offered me a flat fee to voice some lines for 4,000 dollars. Any other lies, such as 4,000 for 5 sessions are total fabrications.

There were not “extensive negotiations.” I’ve also been informed of ridiculous fictions, such as I asked for 250,000 dollars. I am a team player. I was just asking for a fair, living wage in line with the value that I bring to this game.

I was paid a shockingly low total of £3000 total for the first game. A little more for the second. I wanted to voice her. I have drummed up interest in this game ever since I started on Twitter in 2011.

Jennifer Hale Addresses The Bayonetta 3 Casting Controversy

Bayonetta 3 is shaping up to be awfully meta, innit?

Renowned voice actor Jennifer Hale, known for her role as Commander Shepard in the Mass Effect series and the new voice of action character Bayonetta, released a statement in response to the discourse following Bayonetta’s former voice actress claiming she wasn’t offered a living wage by PlatinumGames to reprise her role as the Umbran witch.

Over the weekend, Hellena Taylor, the original voice actor for PlatinumGames stylish hack-and-slash series, Bayonetta, uploaded four videos to her official Twitter account claiming PlatinumGames offered her an “insulting” flat rate of $4,000 to reprise her role as Bayonetta. It should be noted that Bayonetta 3 also features an entire coven of Bayonettas from alternate timelines, for which Taylor would have also presumably been asked to record lines. In the videos, Taylor requested that fans boycott the game and instead donate their money to charity.

Prior to Taylor speaking out, PlatinumGames told Game Informer that the replacement of Taylor for Hale was due to “various overlapping circumstances” that made it “difficult” for Taylor to play Bayonetta once again. Taylor says that she wrote to Hideki Kamiya, executive director of the game, to plead her case, which is when PlatinumGames sent her the “immoral” offer to perform all her work on the game for only $4,000.

In her tweets, Taylor mentioned she was breaking her NDA agreement with PlatinumGames by speaking out. After the suicidal ideation, depression, and anxiety she experienced during a period with little work, Taylor said she has nothing left to lose.

“I am not afraid of the non-disclosure agreement. I can’t even afford to run a car. What are they going to do, take my clothes? Good luck to them,” Taylor said in a tweet.

Today, Hale addressed the Bayonetta controversy in a tweet.

“I am under NDA and am not at liberty to speak regarding this situation. My reputation speaks for itself,” Hale wrote. “I sincerely ask that everyone keep in mind that this game has been created by an entire team of hard-working, dedicated people and I hope everyone will keep an open mind about what they’ve created.”

As a longtime member of the voice acting community, Hale said she believes in “every actor’s right to be paid well” reaffirmed her “great respect” for her peers, and mentioned the years of advocacy she’s undertaken in the field.

“Finally, I hope that everyone involved may resolve their differences in an amicable and respectful way,” she said.

Kotaku’s reached out to Hale and Taylor for comment.

Prior to Hale’s post, fellow voice actor Yong Yea tweeted about the high likelihood that Hale had not been made privy to Taylor’s situation with Platinum before she took on the role of Bayonetta. Yea’s tweet includes screenshots of Hale liking tweets which suggested that NDAs prevented her from weighing in fully.

“Direct your frustrations at the companies and decision makers,” Yea wrote.

While fans wrestled with whether or not they’d adhere to Taylor’s boycott wishes come Bayonetta 3’s release, PlatinumGames’ Kamiya had his Twitter account temporarily deleted and suspended after mass-blocking people asking him about Taylor’s allegation. He’s back now, but has locked his account so no one can reply to his tweets.

Bayonetta 3 is slated to release on October 28 on the Nintendo Switch.

Garfield Is Coming To Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl This Week

Gif: GameMill Entertainment / Kotaku

Internet sensation Garfield is the first post-release character being added to Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl, the devs behind the impressive Smash-style platform fighter announced today.

Garfield is set to join Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl this Thursday, December 9, and will be free for everyone who owns the game.

The short video revealing his inclusion shows that Garfield’s moveset incorporates several familiar items and animations from his comic strip and cartoon appearances, including a tray of pasta, his teddy bear Pooky, a large air attack based on his iconic screaming face, and a grounded move that sees him briefly turn into his vampire alter ego, Count Lasagna.

Hints that the lasagna-loving cat would eventually come to Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl have existed since shortly after the game’s October release, when dataminers discovered a stage featuring a Garfield statue and a character slot bearing his name. When they hacked him into the game, the obviously work-in-progress Garfield was represented by a gray SpongeBob SquarePants and a placeholder UI image, but his stage appeared mostly complete.

These same data-mining efforts also uncovered assets that point to characters like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ Shredder, Avatar’s Zuko, Rugrats’ Tommy Pickles, Jimmy Neutron, and many more Nickelodeon favorites possibly being in the works as well.

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl launched on October 5, immediately grabbing the attention of Super Smash Bros. players looking for a new platform fighting game. While it couldn’t quite stack up to Nintendo’s ubiquitous polish, the Nickelodeon brawler has received frequent balance and gameplay adjustments as well as quality-of-life changes like the inclusion of alternate outfits, the lack of which previously made mirror matches hard to follow.

Really, all Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl needs now is voice acting to push it over the top, and lucky for all of us, Chris Pratt is probably way outside this game’s budget.
