Report: La’el Collins tore his ACL and MCL

Getty Images

Bengals right tackle La’el Collins said on Saturday that he believed he avoided a serious knee injury during Cincinnati’s win over the Patriots, but he was set for an MRI to confirm the initial belief that his ACL was intact.

The MRI reportedly delivered bad news. Kelsey Conway of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports that testing showed Collins tore both his ACL and MCL. He will miss the rest of the season and his rehab will could extend into training camp and the early part of next season.

Collins joined the Bengals after getting released by the Cowboys this offseason. He started all 15 games this season.

Hakeem Adenjii took over for Collins on Saturday and will likely be their starter for their remaining contests.

Cowboys starting RT Terence Steele tears ACL, MCL

FRISCO, Texas — The Dallas Cowboys’ fears Sunday night were confirmed Monday when an MRI showed right tackle Terence Steele suffered tears to the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in his left knee, according to a source.

Steele was injured in the second quarter when a Houston Texans defender crashed into his leg while making a block. Steele had started every game this season and 40 of 45 games in his career after joining the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in 2020.

He is the second starter the Cowboys have lost for the season in as many games, with cornerback Anthony Brown suffering an Achilles tear against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 13.

All-Pro right guard Zack Martin did not know the severity of the injury after the Cowboys’ 27-23 victory over the Texans but said Steele has been their best lineman.

“It’s a big loss for us, and we’ve got to find a way to rally and fill that spot for him because — I said it last year and said it this year — he’s been our bell cow. So, we’ve got to step up and find a way to fill that hole.”

Josh Ball replaced Steele immediately in the Houston game, however, after two poor plays led to a Dak Prescott fumble and interception, he was replaced by Jason Peters on the winning 98-yard drive. Peters had not played right tackle since early in his 18-year career with the Buffalo Bills.

“I thought Jason really did a hell of a job going in there and playing in that situation,” coach Mike McCarthy said Sunday. “Jason’s been in that two-minute situation, you know, for a couple decades compared to Josh Ball. I think just the utilization of personnel was done very well.”

The Cowboys opened the 21-day practice window for Pro Bowl left tackle Tyron Smith last week, and the hope is he could see action against the Jacksonville Jaguars this week. Smith suffered a torn hamstring in training camp that required surgery. He said he felt “great” after his first practice of the regular season.

The Cowboys could go with a split at tackle between Ball and Peters, who is 40, but feel good about their depth.

Steele is scheduled to be a restricted free agent after this season, and the Cowboys have hoped to sign him to a long-term deal.

Jets acquire James Robinson from Jaguars via trade after Breece Hall suffers torn ACL

Breece Hall is out for the season after suffering a torn ACL in the Jets’ Week 7 win over the Broncos. One day later, New York has found a notable replacement for its star running back, acquiring James Robinson from the Jaguars in exchange for a future sixth-round draft pick, according to NFL Media and confirmed by CBS Sports NFL insider Josina Anderson. Robinson made a speedy return from his own serious injury to open 2022 in Jacksonville’s backfield, but Travis Etienne Jr. has emerged as the Jaguars’ lead ball-carrier in recent weeks.

The sixth-round pick acquired by the Jaguars can become a fifth-rounder depending on Robinson’s performance as New York’s presumptive RB1. Michael Carter was previously slated to take over as the Jets’ top back after Hall was carted off Sunday’s win and quickly ruled out. Now, Gang Green will have the 24-year-old Robinson not only for the remainder of 2022 but possibly beyond. As CBS Sports contributor Joel Corry notes, the Jets can eventually extend the veteran on a restricted free agent tender through 2023.

Robinson is two years removed from a 1,000-yard rushing campaign as a rookie. The former undrafted standout was off to a similarly productive start in 2021 before suffering a torn Achilles in Week 16. This year, splitting touches with Etienne, he wasn’t nearly as efficient, averaging less than four yards per carry in three different games, before taking zero carries in Week 6. Etienne, meanwhile, a 2021 first-round pick by Jacksonville, has emerged as one of the club’s top offensive play-makers as of late.

In New York, Hall quickly made a name for himself as one of this year’s top rookies, powering the Jets’ ground game with 463 rushing yards in seven games. Considering he faces a potentially long road to recovery following his ACL tear, it’s possible Robinson could also serve as the team’s starting ball-carrier, or at least split carries, to open 2023 as well.

Fantasy take

How James Robinson trade affects Michael Carter

From CBS Sports Fantasy analyst Dave Richard: When you think about the past year-plus for Carter — his inability to cement a large role in the Jets offense as a rookie, watching his team draft a stud rookie in April and then trade for a good veteran power back to replace the stud rookie — it’s tough to see him evolving into a serious Fantasy asset. That would change if he could start commanding targets on a week-to-week basis, but the Jets offense doesn’t call for a lot of throws to the running back, and quarterback Zach Wilson has a tendency to look downfield, not throw short.

Carter has also gotten off to a pretty blah start. His rushing average sits at 3.5, his rush attempts per game is at a smallish 9.4 and his receiving numbers have all but dried up since Wilson has taken over at quarterback. His only highlight was scoring twice in a blowout win versus Miami in Week 5.

Carter is obviously worth rostering but isn’t likely to be any better than a No. 3 running back for however long Robinson makes an impact. He should still be on the hook for at least 10 touches per week and roughly 40% of the snaps with the Jets, but it’s unlikely he’ll be used regularly in high-value situations like near the goal line.

Jets rookie RB Breece Hall suffered torn ACL in win over Broncos

Breece Hall’s promising rookie season is over after he suffered a torn ACL in the Jets’ 16-9 win on Sunday over the Broncos, NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported Monday.

Hall exited the Jets’ Week 7 game in Denver due to the knee injury and was taken to the locker room on a cart. An MRI confirmed Hall’s torn ACL and a meniscus injury, Rapoport added, which will end Hall’s first year after just seven games.

The rookie RB suffered the injury late in the first half of Sunday’s game, but made a difference prior to exiting. His 62-yard run stood as the only touchdown on the day for the Jets, giving New York a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter.

Hall left the game after four rushes for 72 yards and the aforementioned score, bringing his season totals to 80 rushes for 463 yards and four touchdowns. The rookie averaged 5.8 yards per carry, helping the Jets to a 5-2 start to the 2022 season and building a strong case for Offensive Rookie of the Year honors in the process.

Unfortunately, that’s where Hall will finish statistically. The rest of New York’s exciting group of young contributors — including second-year running back Michael Carter, who will take over starting duties in place of Hall — will have to forge ahead without him.

49ers news: An MRI confirms that Emmanuel Moseley tore his ACL

Kyle’s update, 9:25 AM PT: ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports an MRI confirmed that Moseley tore his ACL. What a bummer. Moseley was playing the best ball of his career and in line for a hefty payday this offseason.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with the media after Sunday’s win and didn’t have good news on the injury front: It was tough at the end. It was a weird feeling watching E-man. It definitely took away a little from the excitement.”

Shanahan fears Moseley tore his ACL. Moseley will have an MRI to confirm, but based on the way everyone sounds, they’re not optimistic. Moseley left the locker room with a brace on his knee and was leaving on crutches. Both Charvarius Ward and Talanoa Hufanga both said the injury took a lot away from the victory.

Depending on how he practices this week, Jason Verrett could play next week, although there’s no guarantee he’s ready.

Unfortunately, that wasn’t the only injury. Jimmie Ward broke his hand. There’s no guarantee he’ll miss time, as Ward could play with a club on his hand. Still, you’d imagine playing with a club would limit Ward to some capacity.

Nick Bosa’s groin got tight turning the second quarter, so the 49ers decided to shut him down. The team will do more tests on Monday.

Kicker Robbie Gould likely just has a bone bruise. Again, more tests will be done tonight and tomorrow morning, and we’ll have an update on each tomorrow afternoon.

Baltimore Ravens CB Kyle Fuller out for season with torn ACL

Baltimore Ravens cornerback Kyle Fuller is out for the season after an MRI revealed Monday that he tore his left ACL.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh called the injury “a crazy circumstance on AstroTurf.” Fuller, a two-time Pro Bowl cornerback, was hurt covering Elijah Moore with 1:18 left in Baltimore’s 24-9 win over the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium on Sunday.

“He got pushed off and just landed the wrong way,” Harbaugh said. “And the turf doesn’t usually give as much as grass. So that’s what happened.”

Fuller, 30, was playing in his first game for his hometown team. Ravens officials initially thought Sunday there was a chance that Fuller’s injury wasn’t serious, but tests Monday confirmed the ligament tear. Fuller signed a one-year, $2.5 million deal with Baltimore this offseason.

Brandon Stephens, a second-year defensive back, will fill in as a starting cornerback until Marcus Peters is ready. Peters is coming off a season-ending ACL and was inactive Sunday.

Before the Sunday game, Peters was spotted running the stairs of MetLife Stadium.

Asked how close Peters was to playing, Harbaugh said, “I don’t have the measurement on that.”

In recent years, the Ravens have had trouble keeping their cornerbacks healthy. Last year, Baltimore had four cornerbacks finish the season on injured reserve.

In addition to Fuller, the Ravens also lost left tackle Ja’Wuan James for the season in the opener Sunday. He tore his left Achilles tendon late in the second quarter.

Patrick Mekari will replace James at left tackle until Ronnie Stanley (ankle) is ready to play.

Boston Celtics’ Danilo Gallinari diagnosed with torn ACL; source says forward eyeing late-season return

Boston forward Danilo Gallinari suffered a torn ACL in his left knee while playing for the Italian national team, the Celtics announced Friday, an injury that could cause him to miss the entire 2022-23 NBA season.

Gallinari previously tore the same ACL in April 2013 and missed the entire 2013-14 season after undergoing a pair of surgeries. The typical recovery time for an ACL tear is six to 12 months, and a source told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski that Gallinari is determined to try and return at some point late in the 2022-23 season.

The 34-year-old Gallinari was injured Saturday during a FIBA World Cup qualifying game against Georgia. He grabbed his left knee after a bounce pass in the lane before hobbling over to the sideline, holding the back of the knee as trainers rushed to his aid. Gallinari then limped to the locker room with the help of a staff member and a teammate.

The Italian team had announced that Gallinari suffered a torn meniscus.

Gallinari signed a two-year, $13.2 million contract — including a player option for the second season — with the Celtics as a free agent last month. The sharpshooting forward, who averaged 11.7 points and shot 38.1% from 3-point range across 66 games for the Hawks last season, was brought in — alongside Malcolm Brogdon, whom Boston acquired in a trade with the Indiana Pacers in July — to bolster the Celtics’ depth and give them some additional offensive punch after the Eastern Conference champions saw their offense struggle at times in their NBA Finals loss to the Golden State Warriors. Gallinari has never played in the Finals over his 13 NBA seasons.

Long considered one of the NBA’s elite-shooting big men, Gallinari is a career 38.2% 3-point shooter, and his 1,426 career 3-pointers ranks 23rd among active players and third — behind Kevin Durant and Kevin Love — among players 6-foot-10 or taller.

According to ESPN’s Bobby Marks, the Celtics will be able to apply for a designated player exception to replace Gallinari. That will give the Celtics $3.2 million to either sign, trade for or claim a player on an expiring contract worth up to that amount.

Including Al Horford’s nearly fully guaranteed deal, Boston has 11 guaranteed contracts on its roster along with several players with nonguaranteed or partially guaranteed deals expected to fight for roster spots in training camp.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish lose starting WR Avery Davis for season to torn ACL, name Tyler Buchner starting QB

Notre Dame starting receiver Avery Davis has a torn ACL in his right knee and is out for the season, the school announced Saturday.

The Fighting Irish also announced Saturday that sophomore quarterback Tyler Buchner will start the opener against Ohio State on Sept. 3.

Davis’ injury happened during practice Friday. The senior and team captain, who was penciled in to start at slot receiver, had previously injured the ACL in his left knee last November, forcing him to miss the final month of the season.

Davis still finished third on the team in yards receiving with 386 on 27 catches.

Losing Davis depletes the Irish wide receiver group further, especially in terms of experienced players. Without Davis, only two returning wide receivers have caught more than 20 passes in a season: Braden Lenzy and Lorenzo Styles. Lenzy is the only one with starting experience.

Nobody on the depth chart behind Davis has extensive game experience.

Buchner played in 10 games last season, mostly as a backup, and threw for 298 yards, 3 touchdowns and 3 interceptions last season. He also ran for 336 yards and three scores.

Buchner, a 6-foot-1, 215-pound sophomore from San Diego, had been the favorite to land the starting job. He competed with third-year sophomore Drew Pyne throughout spring practice and the early part of preseason camp.

ESPN rated Buchner as the No. 8 pocket passer and No. 41 overall player in the 2021 recruiting class.

“It was time,” coach Marcus Freeman told reporters Saturday. “It was time to give the offense clarity on who was the starting quarterback.”

Offensive coordinator Tommy Rees said Pyne, an ESPN 300 recruit in 2020, also could be called upon when needed. Rees told ESPN this spring that Buchner, while more reserved than Pyne, has grown into a stronger leadership role.

“Tyler’s a little bit more of that quiet killer, a little bit unassuming, but when a competitive situation turns on, there’s a different gear,” Rees told ESPN. “Part of his growth is to be the guy who can lead, but his style is a little bit different. Tyler’s confidence is through the roof, [but] you don’t get that unless you really spend some time with him.”

Rees said decision-making ultimately would shape the decision on the starter, but also noted that Buchner brings different elements to the offense with his mobility.

“It’s something I’ve really focused on, putting the ball in the right spot and taking care of the football,” Buchner told ESPN this spring, “but also, when things break down, having the ability to try and go make a play and make something out of nothing, is something that really separates me.”

Information from ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg and The Associated Press was used in this report.

Chris Godwin practices after ACL injury, Tom Brady gets excused absence

Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin took a major step Friday in his return from an ACL injury. Godwin, who tore his ACL in Week 15 last season, took part in his first practice with the team.

The move signals Godwin has made immense progress since his ACL tear. There were hints that was the case at the start of camp, when Godwin avoided the physically unable to perform list. While that was encouraging, it was hard to buy into Godwin’s quick recovery until he got on the field.

Godwin practiced with a brace Friday, a sign he still wants to protect his knee. The fact that he’s out there at all less than 8 months after sustaining the injury is an encouraging sign for Buccaneers fans.

Tom Brady won’t be the one throwing passes to Godwin on Friday. Brady received an excused absence from practice to deal with a personal matter.
