Disney Dreamlight Valley Achievements Are Surprisingly Intense

Image: Disney / Gameloft / Xbox / Kotaku

What should one have to do to earn an award? How much work should one have to complete before receiving an achievement? These are questions without answers. But according to the devs behind Disney Dreamlight Valley, you need to catch nearly 2000 fish and harvest over 4000 vegetables before you get achievements. Better get to work!

Dreamlight Valley was released a week ago via paid early access across Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, and PC. Its combo of iconic Disney characters like Goofy, Stardew Valley-like farming, and Animal Crossing-like village management has been a hit. We here at Kotaku are really enjoying it, even if Mickey’s eyes are a bit creepy and Scrooge McDuck is a greedy bastard. And within this new hit game, you can find a long list of challenges and tasks to complete. But outside of that, like every other modern game in 2022, Dreamlight Valley also has Xbox achievements and PlayStation trophies. And some of these are wild!

For example, one achievement asks players to start 1,000 daily conversations. Depending on how often you play and how many villagers you’ve unlocked this could take weeks or more likely months to accomplish. Another one tasks players with farming and harvesting 4,500 vegetables. Again, this will take most players weeks or months to unlock. The same is true for the achievement that requires you to catch 1,800 fish or cook 900 meals. Your average Dreamlight Valley player—someone who isn’t farming for coins or trying to min/max everything—will probably go a few weeks before getting their first achievement.

Now there is at least one easy-to-get achievement that you can grab right now in a few minutes. It’s the trophy that only requires you to take 50 photos. That number is so small compared to all the others that I can only assume it’s a typo and that the devs intended players to take 5,000 photos.

Of course, for folks who are grinding out massive carrot farms or similar ways to bring in extra cash quickly, I suspect they’ll unlock many of these in no time. But for the majority of Dreamlight Valley players, these will be long-term goals to work on. Like owning a home, planning a family, or finally going one week without having a mental breakdown over the state of the planet.

While these achievements take a lot of time or smart grinding to unlock, I’m not actually frustrated by them at all. For one thing, the game constantly rewards you through quests and dreamlight challenges. Plus, as crazy as they are, I appreciate that for many players, they’ll still be unlocking achievements even after playing for weeks and weeks.

Games like this tend to be things people invest tons of time into, so building out your trophies in a way that rewards long-term players is probably a smart way to keep people invested, even after they’ve cooked 500 plates of fish or crudites. At that point, you’re already past the halfway point to get the achievement. So, why stop now? You don’t want to disappoint Mickey Mouse, do you?

Xbox GoldenEye 007 Remaster Looks Closer Than Ever After Achievements are Spotted

A GoldenEye 007 remaster on Xbox appears more and more likely, as Microsoft now has the game’s achievements listed on its official website.

As spotted by Video Games Chronicle, industry insider @Wario64 on Twitter shared the achievements (below) and a link to their listing online, with the webpage still functioning as normal as of the time of writing.

Both single and multiplayer objectives are listed for the beloved game – which was originally released on the Nintendo 64 in 1997 – with GoldenEye 007 granting players 1,000 Gamerscore in total, as is the norm for fully-fledged games.

A remaster has been long-rumoured, and all but confirmed time and time again – most recently in January when Xbox achievement tracking website TrueAchievements also listed the game. An updated version of the original GoldenEye 007 was confirmed to be in development for the Xbox 360’s Live Arcade at developer Rare but was cancelled due to licensing issues, and files for the game leaked online in February 2021.

It’s been a long time since we received a fully-fledged Bond game, but we seem to be seeing a loosening of the famously tight restrictions on the license. Along with a seeming return to GoldenEye, Hitman developer Io Interactive is also working on Project 007, a totally original new story for the super-spy. We think the developer is a perfect fit for the franchise.

Ryan Dinsdale is an IGN freelancer who occasionally remembers to tweet @thelastdinsdale. He’ll talk about The Witcher all day.

GoldenEye HD finally looks set for release after Achievements appear on Xbox

GoldenEye 007’s elusive HD port finally looks set for release, after Achievements were discovered on Xbox [5,159 articles]” href=”https://www.videogameschronicle.com/platforms/xbox/”>Xbox servers on Sunday.

As shared by internet sleuth Wario64, Achievements for an Xbox version of the classic Nintendo 64 [236 articles]” href=”https://www.videogameschronicle.com/platforms/nintendo/nintendo-64/”>N64 shooter have appeared on Microsoft’s servers, suggesting that a release is imminent.

It was first spotted earlier this year that Rare [167 articles]” href=”https://www.videogameschronicle.com/companies/microsoft/rare/”>Rare developers were seemingly playing an Xbox version of the FPS, as their progress was being logged on tracker sites such as TrueAchivements.

Last year it was confirmed that Xbox Game Studios (Microsoft) [2,027 articles]” href=”https://www.videogameschronicle.com/companies/microsoft/”>Microsoft had to shelve an already completed remaster of the classic N64 game for the  Xbox 360 [531 articles]” href=”https://www.videogameschronicle.com/platforms/xbox/x360/”>Xbox 360 back in 2007, following licensing issues and miscommunication between license holders and a young team who rushed ahead to create it.

A working build of GoldenEye 007’s cancelled Xbox 360 remaster was leaked onto file-sharing sites, allowing those with access to the files to play it via a modded console or  PC [5,505 articles]” href=”https://www.videogameschronicle.com/platforms/pc/”>PC emulator. At the time, VGC reviewed the leaked GoldenEye Xbox build and called it “the greatest remaster you’ll likely never play”.

Speaking for the first time to VGC in a GoldenEye Xbox interview last year, the canned remaster’s co-directors said they didn’t think it would ever be officially released.

“It’s kind of bittersweet,” co-director  Chris Tilston [9 articles]” href=”https://www.videogameschronicle.com/people/chris-tilston/”>Chris Tilston said of seeing the GoldenEye remaster leak into the public domain. “It means people get to see the work that was done, but it also masks some of the cockups that went on behind the scenes.”

Co-director  Mark Edmonds [9 articles]” href=”https://www.videogameschronicle.com/people/mark-edmonds/”>Mark Edmonds added: “The thing that I find strangest is, why now? Why leak it after all this time? Someone must have had this for all those years. It just seems strange to me.

“When I first heard about it, it almost made me think, are Microsoft leaking it on purpose for some reason? (Laughs) I don’t think that would make sense, but it does make you wonder.”

Xbox June update to add feature for revealing secret achievements

Xbox’s June update will begin rolling out to all players shortly, and it looks to be adding a couple of quality-of-life improvements, one of which is the option to reveal secret achievements.

It’s always a little exciting when we approach a new month, as the team at Xbox lets us know which games will be added to Xbox Game Pass or are leaving Game Pass, the upcoming month’s Games with Gold titles, and the features included in the monthly update. This month includes a smaller background feature that increases the speed and reliability of your devices detecting available updates, both in your collection and upon the game’s launch. The other feature is the addition of an option to reveal secret achievements.

Revealing secret achievements across Xbox devices

While we’ve given you the ability to reveal the description and title of secret achievements for quite some time, Microsoft has given its own achievement system a little love in this month’s update. You’ll be able to reveal secret achievements anywhere you use to see your achievements: Xbox consoles, the Xbox app on Android, iOS, and Windows PC, and the Game Bar on PC.

Revealing a secret achievement will allow you to see its name, description, and Gamerscore value. To reveal a secret achievement, head to the Game activity tab, click on Achievements, scroll down to the secret achievement you want to reveal, and then click on Reveal Details. If you want to hide the achievement again after you’ve had a peek, just follow the same steps again to revert it back to its original setting.

What do you think of this news? Are you happy that Microsoft is giving the achievement system a bit of attention? Let us know down below!

Lavrov admits that no victorious achievements expected of Russian army by 9 May

Svitlana Kizilova – Sunday, 1 May 2022, 23:20 The Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sergei Lavrov, has stated that the Russian military will not “artificially adjust” military actions in Ukraine to a certain date, including Victory Day on 9 May. At the same time, Moscow is demanding that Ukraine end the resistance voluntarily. Source: Sergei Lavrov in an interview with the Italian TV company “Mediaset,” cited by RIA Novosti and TASS Details: The Russian minister announced that Russia “will celebrate 9 May in grand style.” He added that the pace of the Russian offensive in Ukraine “does not depend on dates.” He also tried to explain the failure of Putin’s “special operation” by suggesting that the Russian army had allegedly “minimised risks” to Ukrainian citizens and Russian military personnel. Sergei Lavrov recalled that “there was a tradition in the Soviet Union to do something big and loud prior to a holiday,” and he made it clear that the Russian army would not accomplish anything like that by 9 May 2022. The minister referred to the residents of Mariupol (the city blockaded by Russia) who sought shelter in the bunkers of the Azovstal plant from the Russian army’s shelling and bombing, as probably “Western officers and mercenaries.” Lavrov also spoke about Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. According to the Russian foreign minister, the Russian side is not demanding that Zelenskyy surrender, but that the President of Ukraine order the army and Ukrainian people “to stop the resistance.” Background: The Russian aggressors have been forced to plan for less military equipment to take part in a Moscow parade due to their losses on the battlefield. At the same time, the aggressors have transferred reinforcements to the Kharkiv region and are trying to increase pressure in Donbas. Russia’s losses in the war with Ukraine have already already reached 23,000 personnel, about 200 aircraft and over 1,000 tanks.

GOP Senate candidate Herschel Walker has been overstating his academic achievements for years

Walker, who is a candidate in the Republican primary race for US Senate in Georgia, acknowledged in December that he did not graduate from Georgia after the Atlanta-Journal Constitution first reported that the false claim was listed on his campaign website.

But a CNN KFile review found that Walker himself has been repeating the claim for years. Walker’s comments in 2017, and others made over the years, show the former football star repeatedly misrepresented his academic credentials.

“And all of sudden I started going to the library, getting books, standing in front of a mirror reading to myself,” Walker said in a 2017 motivational speech. “So that Herschel that all the kids said was retarded become valedictorian of his class. Graduated University of Georgia in the top 1% of his class.”

Walker also made the claim in another interview in 2017.

“I also was in the top 1% of my graduating class of college,” Walker told Sirius XM radio.
Walker did not graduate from Georgia, where he was a star running back after entering as a prized high school recruit. A profile of Walker from 1982 in the Christian-Science Monitor and an article in The New York Times said he maintained a B average at the school. Walker himself told The Chicago Tribune in 1985 he maintained a 3.0 before his grades dropped. He left to play professional football before graduating and, though having repeatedly said he was returning to obtain his degree, he never received a diploma.

The Walker campaign did not provide proof of Walker’s claims when asked by CNN, but they defended his record as a professional athlete.

Walker is endorsed by former President Donald Trump and is expected to be the Republican nominee to run against Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock in November.

The claim was removed from his website between December and January, according to screenshots from the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine.
That was not the only claim about Walker’s education that was adjusted on his website at the time. After a review of the revised site, CNN’s KFile found another little-noticed claim was removed that said Walker graduated valedictorian of his high school. The website now says that Walker graduated “top of his class.” The claim still remains on the Heisman Winners page for Walker.

While Walker was a top student at his high school and the president of the Beta Club — he maintained an “A” average to be in the school’s Beta Club — CNN’s Kfile found no evidence he was the class valedictorian.

Walker has mentioned in numerous speeches over the years, including in the 2017 speech where he claimed to have graduated in the top 1% of his college class, and in his 2008 autobiography that he was class valedictorian at Johnson County High School. The street where Johnson County High School resides was officially renamed “Herschel Walker Drive” in 2017 in honor of Walker’s football achievements.

“If I’m proud of anything I did in my high school career, it’s what I did in the classroom that I reflect on and relish the most. I did more than just shed the “stupid” label placed on me as a result of my speech impediment. I shed it, erased it, and rewrote it with the titles: Beta Club president and class valedictorian,” wrote Walker in his 2008 “Breaking Free: My Life with Dissociative Identity Disorder.”

CNN’s KFile reviewed Walker’s high school yearbooks and coverage of him in local newspapers at the time.

According to the local newspaper The Wrightsville Headlight, at Walker’s 1980 graduation he was not given the award for the student with the highest GPA in any academic subject. He did tie with another student for a leadership award based on participation in clubs and his GPA, and won numerous awards that year for his football achievements. While Walker was one of the ceremony’s honor graduates, the article does not mention the school naming a valedictorian or a salutatorian.
A 15-year review of local press coverage did not find the school naming a valedictorian until 1994 — when the paper acknowledged the school was naming a valedictorian and salutatorian for the first time in “many years.”
Walker’s campaign did not provide evidence that Walker graduated as his high school’s valedictorian other than pointing to news articles from the early 1980s after he began his career at the University of Georgia making the claim.

“There is not a single voter in Georgia who believes that whether Herschel graduated at the ‘top of his class’ or as Valedictorian 40 years ago has any bearing on his ability to be a great United States Senator,” Mallory Blount, communications director for the campaign, said in a statement.

The campaign also did not provide an explanation for why it removed the claim that Walker was valedictorian from his website. When repeatedly asked if the campaign stood by the since-removed claim from his website, the Walker’s campaign manager Scott Paradise sent the same statement three times in a row which did not address KFile’s questions.

“Multiple reporters wrote about this 40 years ago. If you have a problem with what they wrote, please contact them. If you have a difficult time getting in touch with them, ask yourself why you are asking such a stupid question,” said Paradise to CNN.

Johnson County Schools declined to comment and directed questions to Walker’s campaign when asked if they named a valedictorian that year or if Walker was the top student.

An evolving claim

It’s unclear when Walker began claiming he graduated from Georgia, and press accounts began listing him as returning to get his degree as early as 1983 after he left to join the United States Football League, a rival to the National Football League in the 1980s. Walker joined the New Jersey Generals, which was owned by then-businessman Trump. Over the years, Walker repeatedly told interviewers he had gone back to Georgia during the off-season to take classes. A 1986 article from The Dallas Morning News on his football career states Walker completed his degree in criminal justice and features a quote from Walker talking about his degree.

“Getting a degree is one of the paths you can take on the way to becoming an FBI man,” Walker said. “Of course, my life is not going in that direction right now, but I think police work, especially the FBI, would be my choice if I wasn’t a pro football player.”

Speaking on a YouTube show in 2008, following the release of his book, Walker told the interviewer he went back to get his college degree from University of Georgia

“You know it was said whether I leave or stay in school. It came up that I leave — and what was weird about that is people said, ‘Why would you leave college so early?’ And that’s like guys, ‘I went back to get my degree which is what you’re supposed to do.'”

Press reports from the time of the book’s publication listed Walker’s website for his book and subsequent speaking on mental health as HerschelWalker.net — which also said Walker returned to college and completed his degree.
The claim is brought up in interviews with Walker, on at least two separate occasions — with the host saying he returned to get his degree. In neither instance did Walker correct interviewers.

CNN’s Sam Woodward and Drew Myers contributed to this report.

Halo 3 Fans Mourn Game Server Death W/ Cease Fire, Achievements

It’s the end of an era. On Thursday, Microsoft and 343 Industries turned off all the matchmaking servers for classic games Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo Reach, and Halo 4. And while you can still play versions of these games online via the fantastic Master Chief Collection, many players took time in the final days before January 13 to log on and mourn the end of the original games’ online multiplayer. Some helped other players get last-minute achievements, while others orchestrated cease-fires, and some just played one last match before it all ended.

The shutdown of Xbox 360-era Halo servers, while sad for many, wasn’t a surprise. 343 and Microsoft first announced the news all the way back in December 2020, but the date ended up shifting to January 13, 2022. Now that the date is here, over the last week or so, many players have dusted off their Xbox 360s and hopped back onto Halo 3 and Halo Reach, to join others in saying goodbye to some of the best multiplayer games ever made.

A popular activity in the final days involved players helping others unlock multiplayer-only achievements. A lot of players helped others earn the “Two For One” achievement in Halo 3, considered one of the hardest in the game. To get it you have to kill two players in one shot using the Spartan Laser. Other players helped folks unlock the “Maybe Next Time, Buddy” award which is unlocked after you steal a vehicle back from someone in less than 10 seconds, which can be tricky to get normally. But in the final days of Halo 3, people were open to helping each other grab these last-minute awards and communicated their plans via the game’s voice chat.

Another common occurrence in the final hours for the old-school Halo games was players stopping matches to hang out and chat. Some fired their guns into the air, simulating 21-gun salutes. Others just sat around and chatted about Halo 3, their favorite memories, and what made the game so special to them. It reminded me of the Christmas Day Truce that happened in the early days of WW1, where soldiers from both sides left their trenches to stop fighting in the name of the holidays.

I also saw another player who, during a CTF match, took a moment to eulogize Halo 3 right before capping the flag for the last time.

“Everyone, it has been some of the greatest moments of my life,” said Halo 3 player Xxminiman15xX. “I’m very, very sad to see this end. But, it’s not an end, because we will always have our memories. We’ll always have our moments. And… we can still play on the Master Chief Collection.”

After that they capped the flag, the match ended and shortly after that, the servers began shutting down. Players across Reddit and YouTube shared videos of the moments right as the servers gave up the ghost. Other players took screenshots of the matchmaking screen from Halo 3. Normally the globe seen in the bottom left-hand corner of the map would be lit up representing the various players around the world. But with the servers officially dead, for the first time since Halo 3 was released in 2007, all the lights were gone. The world was covered in darkness. It was over.

Watching players come together to celebrate the end of Halo 3’s servers has been oddly touching. It might have just been a multiplayer shooter, but it was also a game that brought people together. Folks shared stories of meeting friends and even husbands and wives through Halo 3 and Reach.

For me, Halo 3 was probably the last Halo game that I truly, completely loved. I spent so much time in Halo Reach and older games, but none of them (not even the recent and very good Infinite) ever captured the same feeling of Halo 3. Part of that was because I was younger, of course, but also because it was one of the first online video games I really sank weeks of my life into.

Booting up Halo 3 was special, as if I was connecting to a wild and beautiful community. Servers were full of community-created modes and maps—like the wild and crazy “Speed Halo” in Reach or custom parkour and race map in Halo 3. Partaking in that creativity made the games feel like a thing that was actually alive and evolving. I celebrated birthdays in this game. Escaped to its online action when high school got too shitty. It was a place of refuge and a place where I met cool people. (And some racist and assholes.) It also helped that Halo 3 was a damn fine shooter, too.

And while it is true that you can still play Halo 3 online via the excellent Master Chief Collection, it isn’t the same. That era is now gone. The fight is finished. And like a good Spartan, Halo 3 didn’t go quietly.
