American Airlines rebooked a mom on a flight home that would have forced her to leave her 7- and 8-year-old sons behind for days in NYC

  • Sarah Ripmaster woke up to an email saying her flight had changed but her sons weren’t included.

  • American Airlines didn’t add her 7- and 8-year-old boys to her new flight from LaGuardia airport.

  • Airline wanted to put the boys on a Tuesday flight but they would have been left alone in New York.

A mother of two boys, ages seven and eight, woke up Saturday morning thinking she’d be heading home.

But then an email from American Airlines changed everything.

Sarah Ripmaster was supposed to fly back home from New York’s LaGuardia Airport to Chicago O’Hare International Airport Saturday, until she realized that American had rebooked her, but not her kids.

Ripmaster said the first thing she felt when she realized what had happened was fear.

“I woke up in New York City yesterday to a notice that our flight to ORD had been cancelled due to lack of crew. I had a different record locator than my boys, but they were linked together in the system,” Ripmaster, who works for a social media technology platform, told Insider.

She said she was rebooked to leave later Saturday, but “the system had unlinked my boys’ reservation (from mine) and said the next flight they could get them on was Tuesday out of LGA.”

Ripmaster then spent hours on the phone with customer service trying to fix the frustrating situation. “When I did reach someone, the American Airlines woman I spoke to was amazing and helpful – but the process is broken,” she said.

Ripmaster and her boys finally were rebooked to fly together through Nashville, where they were Sunday at the time of her discussion with Insider. She said they were flying back home, to Chicago, later in the day, although that flight was delayed.

Ripmaster said she is an Executive Platinum member, and so she was most surprised that she wasn’t offered any form of compensation. “I’m very frustrated, but mostly wonder what people that don’t have resources do in this situation.”

She said thankfully she was able to get a hotel and meals. “We are okay, but what about so many others who don’t have these resources to bounce back?”

American Airlines didn’t immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.

Texas 5-year-old shot dead, 8-year-old wounded when mom’s vehicle impacted by gunfire at a stop sign: police

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

A shooting in Houston, Texas, left a 5-year-old dead and an 8-year-old wounded when the vehicle they were riding in came under gunfire as it stopped at an intersection early Sunday morning.

Speaking to reporters at the scene, Houston Police Assistant Chief Chandra Hatcher said officers received several phone calls before 1 a.m. about a shooting in the 13300 block of Northborough Drive.

They arrived at the scene but did not see any witnesses, suspects or complainants, Hatcher said.

Further investigation determined a mother was driving in the area with her two kids and had stopped at a stop sign at an intersection when her vehicle came under gunfire.

The woman then “left the location immediately once she realized her children were shot and immediately took them to the hospital,” Hatcher said.

Approximately 15 minutes after responding to the scene, police received additional phone calls regarding two children arriving at an area hospital with gunshot wounds.

Hatcher said a 5-year-old was shot and died of the injuries, while an 8-year-old also shot is expected to make a full recovery.

“It is unclear if the complainants were the intended targets of the shooting or if there was something else going on in this area at the time,” Hatcher said. “We do not know a motive. We do not have suspect descriptions other than potentially two Black males in a dark-colored vehicle. We are looking for surveillance footage out here and are gathering evidence.”

Based on information from a few witnesses, Hatcher said police believe a dark-colored vehicle, possibly with two occupants, was driving westbound on Rush Street, while the complainant’s vehicle was traveling northbound on Northborough. The occupants of the vehicle driving westbound started discharging a firearm or potentially multiple firearms.

The complainant’s vehicle was stopped at a stop sign at an intersection when it was impacted by the gunshots, Hatcher said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Houston police’s homicide division at 713-308-3600 or crime stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.

“At this time, I ask that if anyone knows information, please come forward, and please continue to pray for the family of the deceased child and the injured eight-year-old,” Hatcher said.

Missing 8-year-old boy found alive after more than a week in sewers

(CNN) — An 8-year-old boy was found alive in a sewer eight days after he went missing in Oldenburg, northwestern Germany.

The boy, identified by authorities only as Joe, was reported missing on the afternoon of June 17.

Joe was eventually rescued from the sewer system after a passer-by in the local area heard noises coming from a manhole cover early on Saturday morning and alerted the emergency services, the Oldenburg-Stadt / Ammerland police department said in a statement Tuesday.

Joe was found just 1,000 feet from his home address and was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was treated for hypothermia and dehydration.

Police said they didn’t believe anyone else was involved in the incident.

An initial police report described Joe as having a learning disability. While the search was ongoing, they said he might misinterpret it as a game and continue hiding.

Joe’s surname hasn’t been made public, in accordance with Germany’s privacy laws.

Immediately after the rescue, investigators started scanning the drainage system for clues to how he disappeared.

The authorities concluded Joe most likely climbed into a concrete drainage pipe while playing, and then crawled into the sewer system through a canal and got lost after several meters.

Investigators said that, between the entrance to the drainage system and the place where Joe was found, there are drainage manhole shafts and junctions at regular intervals where he was able to stand up.

Joe told police in an initial statement that he became increasingly disoriented while stuck in the sewers and was unable to find his way out.

“We are so happy — truly,” said police spokesman Stephan Klatte, according to CNN affiliate N-TV.

“That is absolute luck. Of course, there was a possibility that we wouldn’t find the child there. Possibly — if he had not made a sound or these noises would not have been heard, then we may not have found him there at all,” Klatte added.

Fanta Bility: 3 Pennsylvania officers charged with manslaughter in fatal shooting of 8-year-old

Officers Devon Smith, Sean Dolan and Brian Devaney each were charged with one count of voluntary manslaughter, one count of involuntary manslaughter and 10 counts of reckless endangerment, according to the criminal complaints.

Manslaughter charges were “appropriate” in this case rather than murder in the third degree because there was no evidence of malice, a news release from Delaware County District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer’s office sates. Bail was set at $500,000, unsecured, for each defendant and a preliminary hearing set for January 27 in state court.

CNN has reached out to all three officers and their attorneys for comment, as well as the Sharon Hill Police Department.

Fanta was killed after two teens, Angelo “AJ” Ford and Hasein Strand, opened fire in a dispute outside a suburban Philadelphia high school football game, according to the complaint. In response, the three officers, who were monitoring the exit of the football game, fired at a vehicle moving on the street between the officers and the football stadium and spectators leaving the game.
The officers’ shots struck four people as they were leaving, including Fanta, whose injuries were fatal, according to the complaints. Shots from the officers also struck a car driven by two girls going to the football game that had no involvement in the original altercation between Ford and Strand, according to the complaints.

Investigators recovered 25 9mm cartridge casings from the area where the officers fired, with ballistic evidence matching them to the officers’ service weapons, according to the complaint.

Stollsteimer also directed his office to withdraw murder charges against Ford and Strand for their role in Fanta’s killing, the prosecutor announced Tuesday.

“While I believe these defendants should be held accountable for starting the series of events that ultimately led to Fanta Bility’s death, developments during the grand jury investigation render it appropriate to withdraw these charges at this time,” Stollsteimer said in the release.

Strand pleaded guilty Tuesday to aggravated assault and illegal possession of a firearm for his role in the August 27 events. He will serve a prison term of 32 to 64 months and will remain under court supervision until 2030, per the terms of his plea, according to the release.

Ford still faces attempted murder, aggravated assault and gun possession charges, according to the district attorney’s office.

CNN has reached out to the public defender representing Ford and Strand for comment.

“From the moment the call came in on August 27, my team of investigators and prosecutors has worked tirelessly to achieve justice for Fanta and the other victims of that tragic night. Today’s charges are a big step forward in that process,” Stollsteimer said in the release.

“I am convinced the DA’s office and grand jury did exactly what they should have done,” Bility family attorney Bruce Castor said Tuesday in a statement to CNN. “I am very pleased with how the DA’s office handled the case and the Bility family is likewise very impressed.”
