Dwayne Johnson buys every Snickers at Hawaii 7-Eleven to ‘right this wrong’ of candy thefts as 14-year-old

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson joked this week he had finally “exorcised this damn chocolate demon” after he returned to the Hawaii 7-Eleven — where he claimed he used to steal a Snickers “every day” as a 14-year-old – and bought out all of the nougat bars.

The “Black Adam” star explained in an Instagram post that his family was “broke as hell” when he was living on the island and for nearly a year when he was 14, he would swipe a Snickers from the store as his pre-workout snack.

The actor and former wrester known as “The Rock” said his family was “evicted from Hawaii” in 1987, and he had wanted to return to “right this wrong” for decades.

In a video posted to Instagram, the 50-year-old had a clerk ring up all of the store’s Snickers, leaving them on the counter and telling him to give the Snickers to any customers who look like they’re going to steal one.

He also tipped the clerk who had the task of counting the dozens of bars.

Additionally, he paid for all of the customers’ groceries while he was in the 7-Eleven, reaching a bill of $298.

He wrote that he realized the deed might seem “silly” to some, but Johnson noted that every time he has returned to Hawaii and gone by the 7-Eleven, he “always knew” that he “needed to go in and clean out every Snickers bar they had – the right way.”

“And as a bonus it was a lot of fun to take care of everybody who walked into 7-11 while I was there. Least I could do considering all the s— I used to steal from here,” he added.

Johnson continued: “We can’t change the past and some of the dumb stuff we may have done, but every once in a while we can add a little redeeming grace note to that situation — and maybe put a big smile on some stranger’s faces.”

Los Angeles ‘flash mob’ of looters caught on video ransacking 7-Eleven

A “flash mob” of looters were caught on camera ransacking a 7-Eleven in Los Angeles earlier this week — making off with handfuls of cigarettes, snacks and other goods, authorities said.

Video clips released by Los Angeles police show dozens of people, many of them not bothering to hide their faces, grabbing up various items as they swarmed the chain store Monday shortly after midnight in the Harbor Gateway section of the city.

Part of the footage even shows the rowdy bunch going behind the counter that was apparently vacated by 7-Eleven employees and flinging items toward a pack of people on the other side.

The suspects of the flash-mob robbery were able to avoid police. No arrest have been made.

Snacks, drinks, cigarettes, lottery tickets and other merchandise were all lifted from the store that also was vandalized, according to police. Looters also allegedly threw items at store employees.

After exiting the store, the throngs of suspects quickly left the area before cops arrived, police said.

The robberies occurred during a street takeover where drivers flooded and blocked a city intersection with their vehicles from all directions to create a “pit” in the middle of it, police said.

Spectators got out of their cars and watched as drivers started “doing donuts,” authorities said.

“The term ‘flash mob’ was first used to describe a large public gathering at which people perform an unusual or seemingly random act and then disperse, typically organized by means of the internet or social media,” the LAPD said in a statement.

“In the latest cases, however, ‘flash mobs’ have turned from fun spontaneous events to opportunistic criminal occurrences.”

Police were seeking the public’s help in apprehending the suspects.

7-Eleven cuts 880 jobs as part of restructuring

Peter Parks | AFP | Getty Images

Convenience store chain 7-Eleven has cut roughly 880 corporate jobs in the United States, CNBC has learned, roughly a year after it completed its $21 billion acquisition of rival C-store and gas station business Speedway.

7-Eleven is owned by the Japanese retail conglomerate Seven & i Holdings, which came under pressure earlier this year from the San Francisco-based investment company ValueAct Capital to consider strategic alternatives. ValueAct had been urging Seven & i to narrow its focus to 7-Eleven, and it backed a new slate of directors on the Japanese company’s board.

More recently, businesses in the U.S. have been grappling with inflation on everything from fuel to labor to rent, which are weighing on profits. Many companies are now either hitting the breaks on hiring or beginning to lay people off, as they look for opportunities to slash expenses.

7-Eleven has also been contending with higher prices at gas pumps, which have led some consumers to hold off on filling up the tank, or buying extra goods inside of its retail shops.

7-Eleven operates more than 13,000 locations across North America, according to its parent company’s most recent annual filing, roughly 9,500 of which are under its namesake banner.

The company didn’t immediately confirm how many employees it has in the U.S.

“As with any merger, our integration approach includes assessing our combined organization structure,” a 7-Eleven spokesperson told CNBC in an emailed statement. “The review was slowed by Covid-19 but is now complete, and we are finalizing the go-forward organization structure.”

The person said the cuts were of certain jobs in the company’s Irving, Texas, and Enon, Ohio, support centers, as well as field support roles. 7-Eleven is headquartered in Irving, and Speedway is based in Enon.

“These decisions have not been made lightly, and we are working to support impacted employees, including providing career transition services,” the company spokesperson added.

7-Eleven bought Speedway in order to beef up its presence in the U.S., particularly in the Midwest and along the the East Coast. The Federal Trade Commission, however, charged that the takeover of Marathon’s Speedway subsidiary violated federal antitrust laws. 7-Eleven was later ordered to sell over 200 retail outlets to settle the matter.

7-Eleven has meantime been testing so-called “Evolution” stores that offer customers special coffee drinks, local grub and features like mobile checkout. It opened its ninth in the country, in Dallas, in June.

Photos released of shooter who went on a deadly California 7-Eleven spree

Photos of the suspected shooter in a baffling and deadly series of 7-Eleven robberies around Southern California have been released by police.

In five hours on Monday, police believe the same man attacked six different 7-Eleven stores; the date was 7/11, which is when the company has its anniversary festivities. The individual in a mask and black and green sweatshirt first ambushed a store in Ontario around midnight; 45 minutes later, he robbed an Upland store, and an hour after that, the gunman appeared at a Riverside 7-Eleven.

Another shooting occurred around 3:20 a.m. in Santa Ana. There, officers found a man dead in the 7-Eleven parking lot. The victim did not work at the store, and surveillance video shows the suspect dropping items — believed to be the victim’s belongings while fleeing, police said.

By the night’s end, the suspect had robbed stores in Brea, Ontario, Upland, Riverside, Santa Ana and La Habra, killing overnight clerk Matthew Hirsch, 40, in Brea and Matthew Rule, 24, in Santa Ana. Three more people were shot and wounded but survived. Two of the survivors were shot at a La Habra store and one in Riverside.

Following the deadly robberies, 7-Eleven Inc. urged Los Angeles-area stores to close Monday and Tuesday nights for safety. Riverside Police Officer Ryan Railsback said it doesn’t seem coincidental that 7-Eleven was targeted on 7/11, although law enforcement doesn’t yet know the motive of the suspect.

7-Eleven is offering $100,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect. “Tipsters may remain anonymous by contacting Orange County Crime Stoppers at 855-TIP-OCCS,” the company said in a statement.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

7-Eleven encourages Los Angeles-area stores to close for a 2nd night following armed robberies at 6 locations

Authorities are still working to determine whether the robberies that happened Monday at six 7-Eleven locations are connected, police said.

“Our hearts remain with the victims and their loved ones, and our focus continues to be on Franchisee, associate and customer safety,” a 7-Eleven corporate spokesperson told CNN on Tuesday. “With that in mind, we have encouraged stores in the Los Angeles area to close again tonight.”

The robberies unfolded early Monday morning across stores in Santa Ana, La Habra, Brea, Riverside, Upland and Ontario, California, according to police.

Police in Brea and La Habra are “confident” the shootings in their jurisdictions are connected, saying they’re in communication with other agencies.

A store employee at the 7-Eleven in Brea was killed after he was shot, the police department said Monday. Another person was killed at the 7-Eleven location at Santa Ana, a police spokesperson told CNN.

“Based on the photo released we believe it is the same suspect,” the spokesperson said.

Two other people were shot during the robbery at the location in La Habra and taken to the hospital, police said during a news conference.

Meanwhile, a 7-Eleven customer was shot at after a gunman entered the store in Riverside, “brandished a firearm and robbed the clerk,” a police spokesperson said. That victim was taken to a local hospital, where they were in “grave condition.”

“Our hearts are with the victims and their loved ones. We are gathering information on this terrible tragedy and working with local law enforcement,” 7-Eleven said Monday in a statement.

In Upland, police said no shots were fired and no one was injured during the robbery at 7-Eleven. And in Ontario, California, the gunman demanded money while showing a gun and didn’t fire his gun.

7-Eleven shootings: 4 separate shootings reported at 7-Eleven stores in SoCal; at least 3 may be connected, police say

LA HABRA, Calif. (KABC) — Four separate shootings have been reported at 7-Eleven stores across Southern California and at least three may be connected, police said.

Police in Brea responded to a 7-Eleven store at Lambert Road and North Brea Boulevard just after 4 a.m. and found the store clerk shot to death in what investigators believe was a robbery.

According to Brea police, that shooting is believed to be related to another shooting that left at least two people injured at a 7-Eleven store in the 300 block of East Whittier Boulevard in La Habra.

A spokesperson for the Brea Police Department said those two shootings happened about 20 minutes apart.

Police released surveillance images of the suspect they say is connected to the incidents in both those cities. Authorities released the images in the hopes of someone recognizing the suspect, who can be seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with white lettering.

Santa Ana police also said there is a “strong likelihood” that suspect was connected to a shooting at a 7-Eleven store in that city. A man was fatally shot around 3:25 a.m. at that store in the 300 block of East 17th Street.

Meanwhile in Riverside, a customer was shot around 1:50 a.m. in what police described as an apparent robbery at a 7-Eleven store in the 5200 block of La Sierra Avenue. Police said the victim in that shooting was in grave condition.

There was no immediate word on whether the Riverside shooting was also connected to the others.

Did Gas Prices Hit $7.11 at 7-Eleven?

A photograph shows an actual gas price of $7.11 at a 7-Eleven Store in mid-June 2022.

Context

While the photograph is genuine, it was taken in March 2021, not June 2022. More importantly, the prices listed on the sign did not reflect genuine gas prices. Rather, the sign displayed a “test price” of $7.11 to promote the opening of a new store.

Fact Check

In June 2022, as gas prices continued to rise around the globe, a photograph went viral that supposedly showed gas prices at a 7-Eleven store had reached $7.11. This picture was frequently shared with the caption: “The prophecy has been fulfilled.”

Tesla CEO Elon Musk shared an uncaptioned version of the photograph, leading some to believe that it reflected genuine gas prices at a 7-Eleven store. But though the picture is real, the prices are not. These are “test” prices that were used to mark the opening of a new store.

This photograph was originally posted online in March 2021 by Reddit user u/mbeemsterboer. The original post was captioned “This new 7-Eleven’s test gas prices.” In the comment section, the Reddit user shared some additional information about the photo:

“lol these aren’t actual prices. It was before the gas station was open, they just used 7.11 as the gas prices on the sign to have them working prior to opening”

It isn’t uncommon for a 7-Eleven store to display gas prices of $7.11 in the days leading to a new store opening, the company told us.

“This photo is more than a year old. In the past, it was common for building contractors to test the fuel price signs at newly built, but not yet open, 7-Eleven locations to $7.11 in honor of the store’s name,” a company spokesperson said. “We have since requested that building contractors stop this practice and hope this recently re-circulated photo did not cause any confusion for 7-Eleven customers.”

We have found several additional photographs showing these test prices at various locations. Here’s a photograph of a soon-to-be opened 7-Eleven displaying a gas price of $7.11 with another sign announcing that a new store would be coming soon.
