Avian flu outbreak wipes out 50M US birds, a record

CHICAGO — Avian flu has wiped out 50.54 million birds in the United States this year, making it the country’s deadliest outbreak in history, U.S. Department of Agriculture data showed on Thursday.
The deaths of chickens, turkeys and other birds represent the worst U.S. animal-health disaster to date, topping the previous record of 50.5 million birds that died in an avian-flu outbreak in 2015.
Birds often die after becoming infected. Entire flocks, which can top a million birds at egg-laying chicken farms, are also culled to control the spread of the disease after a bird tests positive.
Losses of poultry flocks sent prices for eggs and turkey meat to record highs, worsening economic pain for consumers facing red-hot inflation and making Thursday’s Thanksgiving celebrations more expensive in the United States. Europe and Britain are also suffering their worst avian-flu crises, and some British supermarkets rationed customers’ egg purchases after the outbreak disrupted supplies.
The U.S. outbreak, which began in February, infected flocks of poultry and non-poultry birds across 46 states, USDA data show. Wild birds like ducks transmit the virus, known as highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), through their feces, feathers or direct contact with poultry.
“Wild birds continue to spread HPAI throughout the country as they migrate, so preventing contact between domestic flocks and wild birds is critical to protecting U.S. poultry,” said Rosemary Sifford, the USDA’s chief veterinary officer.
Farmers struggled to keep the disease and wild birds out of their barns after increasing security and cleaning measures following the 2015 outbreak. In 2015, about 30% of the cases were traced directly to wild bird origins, compared to 85% this year, the USDA told Reuters.
Government officials are studying infections at turkey farms, in particular, in hopes of developing new recommendations for preventing infections. Turkey farms account for more than 70% of the commercial poultry farms infected in the outbreak, the USDA said.
People should avoid unprotected contact birds that look sick or have died, though the outbreak poses a low risk to the general public, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

The New York bishop who was robbed at gunpoint during a livestreamed service in July and then scrutinized over his apparent wealth is now mounting a lawsuit against a local radio station that he alleges aired loaded claims about him.
Bishop Lamor Whitehead went live on his Instagram account in July, in a viral video that showed armed assailants interrupting the service and stealing approximately $1 million worth of jewelry. Whitehead has now sued Tarsha Jones, the morning host of 94.7 The Block, in the New York County Supreme Court, alleging that she spread lies about him following the robbery.
“On or about 9/13/2022, Miss Jones, on her morning radio show on 94.7 The Block, said that Bishop Whitehead: is a ‘drug dealer,’ ‘using the church to hide that old drug money;’ ‘assaulted the young lady,’ and ‘[his] church is where he’s probably still doing his dirty work,'” the lawsuit states.
Whitehead’s attorney called the claims false and said that they “injured Plaintiff’s reputation as a pastor,” and implied criminal activity, affecting his congregation. His lawsuit seeks $50 million in defamation damages from Jones and Paramount, The Block’s parent company.
Jones and The Block did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment. Paramount did not immediately return comment as well.
Whitehead has 1.5 million followers on Instagram, where he regularly goes live, and has previously pushed back against criticisms of his opulence and previous legal battles.
One of Whitehead’s parishioners, Pauline Anderson, sued Whitehead in September 2021, alleging that she gave him $90,000 to help her buy a home after she told him she had poor credit. Per court documents, she sued him and alleged he kept the money and lined his pockets for his political campaign.
“And for the record, anything that was given to me is a Donation unless it’s attached to a contract! I was making investments that’s what I Do!” Whitehead texted in a message to Anderson, according to an exhibit in the suit.
In the parishioner’s lawsuit, first reported on by The City, Anderson’s attorneys alleged that Whitehead first met Anderson after he helped her son Rasheed secure housing after an intensive surgery procedure. Whitehead had served five years in state prison for defrauding others and for grand larceny, according to The City.
‘Ultra high net worth’ individuals with $50M or more spike to record high: report
A new report from Credit Suisse has found that individuals with assets worth more than $50 million, referred to as “ultra high net worth” (UHNW) individuals, spiked to a record high last year.
Credit Suisse’s Global Wealth Report, published on Tuesday, found that the number of UHNW individuals globally grew by 46,000 in 2021 to a total of 218,200.
As low-to-middle income families struggled to cope with the recent soaring food and energy prices, many ultra-rich individuals benefitted from the rise in housing prices and thriving stock market.
Meanwhile, families saw most of their savings wiped away due to the COVID-19 pandemic, leading them to incur higher debt.
“The strong rise in financial assets resulted in an increase in inequality in 2021,” the report said, stating that “the global wealth inequality has fallen this century due to the faster growth achieved in emerging markets.”
Forty-six thousand UHNW individuals also saw their wealth double by 50 percent within the two-year period.
“This is 46,000 more than the 218,200 recorded at the end of 2020, which in turn was 43,400 higher than in 2019. These increases are more than double the increases recorded in any other year this century,” the report said. “Taken together, it means that the number of adults with wealth above USD 50 million expanded by more than 50% during a two-year period.”
The report also stated that the recovery of macroeconomic activity in a low-interest environment has created favorable conditions for household wealth last year.
This comes as the number of U.S.-based millionaires individuals increased by 2.5 million last year, bringing the total number in the country to 62.5 million. The U.S. currently holds the largest number of millionaires in the world.
China, which harbors 10 percent of the world millionaires, comes in second place, followed by Japan, the U.K., and France.
