Oklahoma police ‘actively looking’ for missing 4-year-old Athena Brownfield with infrared helicopters, boats

A 4-year-old girl from Cyril, Oklahoma, is still missing after she disappeared earlier this week and authorities are asking for the public to assist in the investigation.

Athena Brownfield has been missing since last Tuesday, and the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) and Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) have deployed infrared helicopters, boats, four-wheelers, and personnel on the ground to search the nearby area in an effort to locate her, according to the OHP Trooper Eric Foster.

“We’ve been in the air in helicopters with infrared, on the ground, around town there have been a lot of grid searches on foot and on four-wheelers, things like that,” Foster said during a press conference Wednesday afternoon, FOX 25 reported. “Our Emergency Response Team (ERT), which is specially trained to go on foot in search of people and things, are out in coordination with civilians who have come and wanted to volunteer their time and effort.”

The bureau’s PIO Brook Arbeitman confirmed this information, adding: “We are still very actively looking for her using all of our tools. We are finding things that we hope might give us clues as to where she is, but we are still actively looking for her.”

Athena Brownfield, 4, has been missing since at least Tuesday and authorities are continuing to search for her.

Authorities also utilized Oklahoma Department of Corrections dogs to help search, per the report.

“This is a very active and ongoing investigation, and right now our top priority is locating her. And sorting out who is responsible will come next. We need to find this little girl,” Arbeitman said. “She’s on her own in the elements. So, is that endangered? Yeah. But is she the victim of physical harm? That’s yet to be determined.”

This ground search continued all Wednesday but concluded after volunteers searched “the entire town,” Arbeitman said.

“Today at 4 p.m., the Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) Emergency Response Team (ERT) concluded a grid search with local volunteers. Those volunteers have been released after searching the entire town, every known vacant house and local waterways,” OSBI added in a separate statement Wednesday afternoon.

It added: “Currently, the Oklahoma Department of Corrections (ODOC) has search dogs in the area and the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs (OBNDD) flew their drones over the community.”

Athena was reported missing around 2 p.m. Tuesday after a postal worker found her 5-year-old sister alone near their residence in Cyril, which is located about 70 miles (113 km) southwest of Oklahoma City.

The older girl was described as frightened but not needing medical care.

It is not clear how long she had been missing before her disappearance was reported.

“We’re still working on putting together an exact timeline,” Arbeitman said.

Details regarding the home where the girls were staying are also not immediately clear and the whereabouts of the girls’ parents or guardians at the time of Athena’s disappearance are not known.

“That’s part of the ongoing investigation,” Arbeitman said Wednesday morning when asked about who was supposed to be watching the girls, according to KOCO News.

The 5-year-old has been placed in protective custody.

BODY FOUND BURIED IN DETROIT IDENTIFIED AS MISSING WOMAN

Many details about the 4-year-old, who authorities initially said was 3 but have since corrected, are not known. Subsequently, an Amber Alert has not been issued as her disappearance does not meet specific guidelines, Foster said.

“There’s specific guidelines and things that we have to follow,” he explained. “Not every part of that guideline came into play in this. So the next best thing that we could do was issue a Missing and Endangered notification that went out in a 15-mile radius from where she went missing.”

Law enforcement officials are continuing to conduct interviews and are reviewing surveillance videos in the area. They are also asking anyone with doorbell cameras or footage of the area near the 200 block of West Nebraska to turn over their resources to help in these efforts.

“The entire law enforcement community assisting with locating Athena appreciates local volunteers, restaurants, churches and all the tips that have been phoned in,” the OSBI said.

Residents are encouraged to search their own property for Athena.

Fox News Digital is aware of social media posts regarding Athena’s parents or details surrounding her living situation but the OSBI is advising people and outlets not to share unconfirmed details as it could hinder the investigation.

Anyone with information about Athena Brownfield’s disappearance is asked to contact the Cyril Police Department directly at (580) 464-2216, the OSBI tip line at 800-522-8017 or email tips@osbi.ok.gov

China Reports First Human Case Of H3N8 Bird Flu, 4-Year-Old Found Infected

China: A four-year-old boy was found to have been infected with the bird flu virus (Representational)

Beijing:

China has confirmed the first known human case of the H3N8 strain of avian flu, but health authorities say there is a low risk of widespread transmission among people.

H3N8 is known to have been circulating since 2002 after first emerging in North American waterfowl. It is known to infect horses, dogs and seals, but has not previously been detected in humans.

China’s National Health Commission on Tuesday said a four-year-old boy living in central Henan province tested positive for the strain after being hospitalised earlier this month with a fever and other symptoms.

The boy’s family raised chickens at home and lived in an area populated by wild ducks, the NHC said in a statement.

The boy was infected directly by birds and the strain was not found to have “the ability to effectively infect humans”, the commission said.

It added that tests of the boy’s close human contacts found “no abnormalities”.

The NHC said the boy’s case was a “one-off cross-species transmission, and the risk of large-scale transmission is low”.

It warned the public to nevertheless stay away from dead or sick birds and seek immediate treatment for fever or respiratory symptoms.

Avian influenza occurs mainly in wild birds and poultry. Cases of transmission between humans are extremely rare.

The H5N1 and H7N9 strains of bird flu, detected in 1997 and 2013, respectively, have been responsible for most cases of human illness from avian influenza, according to the US Centers for Disease Control.

Human infections of zoonotic, or animal-borne, influenzas are “primarily acquired through direct contact with infected animals or contaminated environments, but do not result in efficient transmission of these viruses between people”, according to the World Health Organisation.

In 2012, H3N8 was blamed for the deaths of more than 160 seals off the northeastern coast of the United States after it caused deadly pneumonia in the animals.

Arizona 4-year-old girl abducted 62 years ago ID’d as Sharon Lee Gallegos

A young girl who was found dead in an Arizona desert in 1960 and dubbed “Little Miss Nobody” finally has a name.

Officials utilized cutting-edge DNA evidence and facial reconstruction to solve the 62-year-old mystery and identify the slain child as Sharon Lee Gallegos, sheriffs said at a Tuesday press conference livestreamed by ABC15 Arizona.

Gallegos, 4, was abducted on July 21, 1960 while playing with other kids behind her grandmother’s house in Alamogordo, NM, according to police.

When her decomposed body was found 10 days later more than 500 miles away in Congress, Ariz, police initially believed she could be the victim. Unfortunately, officials estimated the dead girl was 7, and a clothing and footprint comparison did not match, so federal and local officials eventually explored other leads, investigators said.

When Sharon Lee Gallegos’ body was found after she was abducted, police initially determined the clothing and footprint comparison did not match.
AP

“Footprint comparisons are not obviously how we do things now, but that was probably the best technology they had available to them at the time,” Yavapai County Lt Tom Boelts said.

Investigators started looking at the case again in 2014, relying on old newspaper reports for much of their research, police said.

In 2015, they exhumed the girl’s body from under her “Little Miss Nobody” tombstone, but DNA testing was not then advanced enough to generate a new lead.

A publicized 3D facial reconstruction image a year later put a face to the unidentified girl, and led to a tip that it might be young Sharon. A privately funded DNA test from the Texas laboratory Othram was then able to match the girl’s genetic material with that of a living relative.

“In 1960, people had no idea that DNA would even be a technology — they wouldn’t even know what to call it, it didn’t exist,” said Yavapai County Sheriff David Rhodes.

“But somehow, someway they did enough investigation to preserve, to document, to memorialize all the things that needed to occur, so that someday we could get to this point.”

Ray Chavez speaks during a news conference regarding the identification solving of Sharon Lee Gallegos in Prescott, Arizona on March 15, 2022.
AP

Positively identifying the girl was a team effort, consisting of volunteers, police and advocates. It was the coldest case that the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children had ever helped solve, officials said.

“We still have work to do in this case,” Boelts said. “We would still like to identify the people who took her. We would still like to answer the questions what happened in those 10 days from the time she was taken to the time she was found. So we are still working.”

4-year-old Israeli child tests positive for polio, first case since 1989

A four-year-old Israeli child from Jerusalem tested positive for polio after it was revealed he was not vaccinated against the life-threatening disease, the Health Ministry said on Sunday.

The regional health administration in Jerusalem opened an epidemiological investigation and is in contact with the child and his family for specific instructions. The patient seems to have been infected with a strain that has undergone a change and could cause disease in those who are not vaccinated.

Until Sunday, no cases of polio had been recorded in Israel since 1989. The Health Ministry called on those who are not yet vaccinated to get vaccinated.

Indications of the virus have been found in sewage samples in the area, although this has occurred in the past without any infections being reported.

The case in Jerusalem comes as an outbreak of the virus was reported in Malawi. The strain found in the outbreak there was linked to one circulating in Pakistan, where it is still endemic. Polio is also endemic in Afghanistan.

“The resurgence of the wild poliovirus in Malawi … is cause for serious concern,” Rudolf Schwenk, the head of the UN children’s agency UNICEF in Malawi, said in a statement.

“Vaccination is the only way to protect the children of Malawi from this crippling disease which is highly infectious.”

Polio is a highly infectious disease that invades the nervous system and can cause total paralysis within hours. While there is no cure, it can be prevented by vaccine, the World Health Organization has said. The toddler may remain paralyzed in half of his body as a result, N12 reported.

Reuters contributed to this report.
