‘Intentional vandalism’ at substations the cause of power outage affecting over 40K residents of Moore County

A massive power outage is being reported in Moore County.

A Duke Energy outage map Saturday evening showed 37,998 customers without power in Moore County; The Randolph Electric Membership Corporation also reported nearly 3,000 customers without power in the southern part of the county.

WRAL viewers began calling in to report outages around 8:00 p.m.

Jeff Brooks with Duke Energy told WRAL News that crews are experiencing “multiple equipment failures” that are affecting substations in Moore County.

“We are also investigating signs of potential vandalism related to the outages,” said Brooks.

Moore County Sheriff Ronnie Fields said just before midnight that the outage was being investigated as a “criminal occurrence.”

“As utility companies began responding to the different substations, evidence was discovered that indicated that intentional vandalism had occurred at multiple sites,” said Fields.

Fields said Moore County sheriff’s deputies and various other law enforcement agencies provided additional site security Saturday as utility crews worked.

Anyone with any information about this act of violence should contact the Moore County Sheriff’s Office at 910-947-2931.

The Village of Pinehurst sent out a police alert Saturday saying, “Additional officers have been called in to assist. Please stay off the roads if you can and treat all intersections as four way stops.”

The Duke Energy website lists the possible time of restoration as 10:00 p.m. Sunday evening, though many viewers have told WRAL News they were given quotes for early Sunday morning.

“We do not yet have an updated estimate on restoration time,” said Brooks. “We will update customers as that information becomes available.”

Saturday night, WRAL News crew arrived at the Walmart in Aberdeen to find a massive police presence; The crew was quickly instructed to leave by authorities who said it wasn’t safe.

Police said they were doing an employee head count.

It’s not currently known if this police response is in relation to the outages.

WRAL News is working to gather more information.

Seats skyrocketed to $4,000 due to Ticketmaster’s “dynamic pricing program,” which raises prices based on demand.

Fans were stunned with Springsteen’s upcoming tour costs, as Ticketmaster addresses pricing backlash Sunday to release statistics about costs.

One critic took to Twitter to spark their outrage saying, “Gotta get a 2nd mortgage to get a ticket.”

Another Springsteen fan tweeted that they are waiting for a quote on selling their kidney in order to afford a concert ticket: “Waiting for the quote on selling my kidney to get nosebleed seats.”

Others continued to blame Ticketmaster for their “garbage” policies.

However, the popular ticket sales and distribution company stood by its “dynamic pricing program” and said only 1.3% of total tickets across “The Boss” tour sold for more than $1,000, according to Variety.

Random: “Die-Hard Nintendo Fan” Reportedly Forked Out Over $40K To Ask For A New F-Zero

Image: Nintendo

Yesterday, there was a story doing the rounds about a Nintendo shareholder who asked the company if they had any plans to revive past IPs such as the futuristic racing series F-Zero, the RPG Baten Kaitos, and various other titles like Wario Land.

It turns out this question didn’t come cheap. Speaking to Business Insider, the individual known as ‘Momiji’ on social media, revealed how he spent over 5.6 million Japanese yen (over $40,000 USD) on Nintendo stock just to ask Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa the question during the company’s latest shareholder meeting.

The same individual, who described himself as a “die-hard Nintendo fan”, bought 100 Nintendo shares in February priced at 56,430 yen per share (over $400 USD per share), after selling stock in another company. He’s been playing Nintendo games since he was a child and apparently can’t get enough of the sense of speed in F-Zero.

In the lead-up to the shareholder meeting, there was no guarantee he would be able to ask a question. This was supposedly a “bonus” in the end. Business Insider also notes how 100 shares of stock are required in order to gain direct access to Nintendo’s shareholder meeting.

So, what was Nintendo’s reply in the end? It’s “always” considering how to develop new titles and remakes. Here is what was said, courtesy of a translation by Robert Sephazon (via VGC):

“It is realistically difficult to develop new titles and remakes, including sequels, for every Nintendo game that people request, but we are very grateful and appreciate the expectations our fans have for our games”

“We are always considering how to develop new titles and remakes that can be enjoyed by many players.”

This isn’t the first time we’ve heard a response like this from Nintendo. As for F-Zero, its absence has raised concerns about the future of the series, but there are people out there (including past Nintendo employees) who seem to think there’s still hope.

Fan Spends 40k On Stock To Ask Nintendo About F-Zero

Screenshot: Nintendo

Many Nintendo fans desperately want a new entry in the popular sci-fi racing series, F-Zero. However, only one diehard fan was reportedly dedicated enough to spend over 5 million yen (roughly $40,000 US) on Nintendo stock, giving him a chance to ask the Japanese publisher about F-Zero and its future directly.

On June 29, during an annual shareholder meeting, an investor called in and asked Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa if the company had considered bringing back fan-favorite franchises, specifically F-Zero. It’s been over 15 years since the last release in the series, and so the question caught the attention of fans desperate for a new entry in the futuristic racing title. Now, thanks to a new report, we know who asked this question and why.

According to Business Insider, the investor who asked about F-Zero is a Nintendo fan who spent 5.6 million yen on 100 shares back in February after selling stock from a different company. The investor wished to remain anonymous and is simply known by his Twitter username: Momiji. He describes himself as a “diehard fan.”

“I have been playing Nintendo games since I was a child,” Momiji explained to Insider. “Among them, I can’t get enough of that sense of speed of F-Zero.”

While he had purchased enough shares to gain access to the meeting, he told Insider he wasn’t guaranteed to get a question in. Asking a question, he said, was a “bonus.” Nintendo later confirmed with Insider that 100 or more shares are needed to access these annual shareholder meetings.

After asking about F-Zero, Nintendo’s president offered an answer that was basically “Thanks for asking, but…no.”

“It is realistically difficult to develop new titles and remakes, including sequels, for every Nintendo game that people request,” said Furukawa via translation Momiji verified. “But we are very grateful and appreciate the expectations our fans have for our games.”

Shinnya Takahashi, Nintendo’s managing executive officer, was a bit more optimistic but stopped short of promising anything.

“During the 79th Ordinary General Meeting of Shareholders in 2019, we were asked if there were any plans to remake the Famicom Detective Club series, and, at that time, we happened to be planning a remake,” said Takahashi via translation from VGC. “That is an example where we were already actively developing such a title.”

“We cannot tell you if there are any plans for future remakes of any specific game,” Takahashi continued. “But, during development, we are always thinking about various possibilities that players can enjoy.”

So, there’s a chance, I guess. Not sure if this answer was worth $40,000 bucks, but at least Momiji still owns stock in one of the most popular video game companies in the world. That’s probably worth something!

40K Game Developers Criticised Over Ridiculous Twitch Drops

Screenshot: Complex Games

Complex Games, the developers of the new Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters, have issued a statement apologising to players after running a campaign where certain in-game items were only available to those who sat through some Twitch streams.

Via PC Gamer, while Complex probably thought they were running a fairly standard (by 2022 standards anyway) release window promotional stuff, the nature of the items and the fanbase/platform in question weren’t having it. Here’s an example of a negative review left on the game’s Steam page as a result, one of many that presumably prompted the statement:

The game would have gotten a thumbs up but for one thing. The developers for some ridiculous reason decided to put 11 ingame items(not skins or cosmetics but actual weapons and armor) behind twitch drops on the day of release. In order to get these items you not only have to create and link a Frontier account and a Twitch account but you have to watch hours and hours of inane twitch streamers prattling on instead of actually playing the game you paid for. They also are timed so if you miss them you miss them forever.

If there was another way to earn these ingame it would not be a big deal but I’m not gonna watch ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Angry Joe for 2 hours just to get a weapon.

The Angry Joe stream was actually only 45 minutes, but their point remains. The items weren’t anything fancy or game-breaking, most of them were just very slight variations on early-game weapons and armour that you’ll move past in a few hours anyway, but it’s the spirit of the move—and it’s mandates on player’s time if they want to try out everything the game has to offer—that has upset people as much as its practical consequences.

As a result, Complex have said that every item offered during the streams will now be given away to free to all players later this month.

Ave Imperator Force Commanders,

We are pleased to see so many of you enjoying Warhammer 40000 Chaos Gate: Daemonhunters. Whilst we are pleased to see you enjoying the gameplay, we are also listening to your feedback.

One of the areas we have noted is the frustrations around the various Twitch drop campaigns we ran around the launch of the game. Whilst the sole objective of these campaigns was to drive awareness, we understand many feel this locked in-game items away from them.

This was certainly not our intention and we appreciate you sharing your thoughts on this. As such, we will make all items from every Twitch drop campaign available to players via one of our planned updates in May. We will confirm which update and exact date when this is finalised.

We hope this addresses your frustrations and you can continue to smite the forces of Chaos with these items in your Armoury.

If you haven’t even heard of Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate – Daemonhunters, let alone played it, I’m going to assume it’s because it’s the worst name ever and that the thought of yet another Warhammer game has caused your eyeballs to roll back into your skull.

The thing is…this game is really good, and very XCOM, so for anyone who has glossed right over it but is now preparing to double back at this revelation, I’ll be sharing some impressions of it later in the week.

Portland Trail Blazers’ Jusuf Nurkic fined $40K for throwing Indiana Pacers fan’s phone

NEW YORK — The NBA fined Jusuf Nurkic of the Portland Trail Blazers $40,000 on Tuesday for confronting a fan at a game in Indiana and throwing the person’s cellphone.

The incident happened shortly after the game Sunday between the Blazers and the Pacers. Nurkic approached the fan, walked within a few inches of the person, grabbed the person’s cellphone and tossed it into nearby seats.

It was not clear what preceded the incident, which lasted only a few seconds. A security guard walked between Nurkic and the fan after the phone was tossed, at which point the Blazers’ center walked away.

Indiana won the game 129-98. Nurkic, whose nickname is “the Bosnian Beast,” did not play. He has not played since mid-February because of left foot plantar fasciitis.

Bitcoin calls traders’ bluff with fresh $40K fakeout as Fed decision day arrives

Bitcoin (BTC) tested traders’ neves yet again on March 16 as a fresh spike over $40,000 ended in minutes.

Shorts feel the burn after abrupt trip to $41,700

Data from Cointelegraph Markets Pro and TradingView showed BTC/USD suddenly surging to highs of $41,700 on Bitstamp — before instantly reversing.

Two hourly candles was all it took for the entire market to rise by $2,000, break significant resistance levels and come all the way back down again.

The move, while recently commonplace, was not without its casualties, as evidenced by liquidations across exchanges.

According to data from on-chain monitoring resource Coinglass, Bitcoin accounted for $98 million of these over the 24 hours to the time of writing. Total crypto liquidations for the period were just over $200 million.

While still in the middle of its established trading range, BTC/USD took out resistance at both $40,000 and $41,000 before the latter strengthened once the pair had deflated.

On Wednesday, $41,000 remained as the sell-side pressure, but a significant build-up of sellers had yet to reappear at $40,000, data from Binance’s orderbook compiled by monitoring resource Material Indicators showed.

“Snooze party” until Fed rate hike announcement?

For analysts, meanwhile, the immediate past paled in significance compared to what the immediate future was apt to bring Wednesday.

At 2pm Eastern Time, the United States Federal Reserve is primed to reveal moves on interest rates, something many were keenly watching as a potential price paradigm shifter.

For popular trader and analyst Crypto Ed, there was thus nothing to see until the news came.

Twitter account PlanC meanwhile argued that the market had already accounted for the expected 0.25% rate hike, but that this would not help macro inflationary forces — which themselves arguably advertise BTC as a store of value.

“The FED will raise rates 25 basis points, which is already priced in and will do nothing to stop inflation,” the account summarized.

BTC/USD traded at around $39,500 at the time of writing, still above Tuesday’s levels.

$40K Bitcoin price is in reach, but analysts warn that a sweep of recent lows is likely

There’s was no rest for weary crypto traders on March 10 as a blistering 7.9% CPI print emerged as the headline of the day, putting pressure on global financial markets and erasing the previous day’s gains in Bitcoin (BTC) as the price fell back below $40,000.

Data from Cointelegraph Markets Pro and TradingView shows that the BTC sell-off kicked off in the early trading hours on Thursday and escalated into midday with the price hitting a low of $38,562 before dip buyers bid it back above support at $39,000.

Here’s what analysts have to say about the ongoing see-saw price action for BTC and what levels to keep an eye on for a bullish breakout or bearish downturn.

“Price compression precedes volatility”

Insight into the recent volatility for Bitcoin was offered by crypto trader and pseudonymous Twitter user ‘Rekt Capital’, who posted the following chart noting that “BTC is still consolidating between the green higher low support and the blue 50-week EMA resistance.”

BTC/USD 1-week chart. Source: Twitter

According to Rekt Capital, “the higher lows and lower highs are compressing price. Price compression precedes volatility.”

As for what it would take to reclaim the bullish narrative, Rekt Capital pointed to the green and blue exponential moving average (EMA) lines which have proved to be strong points of resistance over the past two weeks.

Rekt Captial said,

“To move higher inside its macro range, BTC needs to reclaim the two key bull market EMAs to confirm bullish momentum.”

BTC holders risk selling at a loss

The oscillating nature of BTC’s price action in recent weeks was discussed by research fund, Stack Funds, which noted in its current weekly report that “Bitcoin has whipsawed the past few weeks, trading within the $35,000 – $45,000 range with no strong directional momentum intact.”

According to Stack Funds, this recent price action “has been mainly news-driven” and the analysts see no relief in the near term as the conflict in Ukraine and the persistent rise of inflation continue to pose significant headwinds.

Evidence that traders have a low appetite for increasing exposure to the current market conditions can be found by looking at the Bitcoin Spent Output Profit Ratio (SOPR), a metric that indicates the aggregate gains and losses realized on a particular day.

Stack Funds noted that the long-term BTC holder SOPR “is trending towards its threshold value of 1.0,” an important level as it marks the defining line between selling at a profit or selling at a loss.

Bitcoin long-term holder SOPR. Source: Stack Funds

According to the report, the long-term holder SOPR has been trending down since Bitcoin’s price hit its peak in November 2021,” and currently it trades “around the 1.5 handle.”

During the two instances shown on the chart above where the SOPR trended and traded below the 1.0 threshold in mid-2018 and the end of 2019, “Bitcoin traded sideways and dipped further both times.”

Stack Funds said,

“Unless we see some positive catalyst in the markets or a reversal in the SOPR indicator, we expect sideways trading and possibly a potential dip in price action, at least in the short term.”

But it’s not all doom and gloom when it comes to Bitcoin price from an on-chain analysis point of view. In the following chart posted by crypto analyst and pseudonymous Twitter user ‘Plan C’, the analyst explains that “the number of Bitcoin accumulation addresses has gone parabolic over the last month.”

Plan C defined accumulation addresses as “addresses that have at least 2 incoming non-dust transfers and have NEVER spent funds BTC.”

Not bullish below $46,000

As for the near-term outlook for Bitcoin, market analyst and Cointelegraph contributor Michaël van de Poppe noted that things are not looking bullish below $46,000 and he thinks “the chances of taking these lows are quite significant.”

BTC/USDT 1-day chart. Source: Twitter

These short-term bearish sentiments were echoed recently by David Lifchitz, managing partner and chief investment officer at ExoAlpha, who noted that the recent spike in BTC “came out of nowhere and lasted less than one hour with not much follow-through.”

Lifchitz said,

“BTC remains still stuck in the $33,000-$45,000 range. Without any follow-through in the next 48 hours and a possible break above $45,000 toward $50,000, BTC will probably keep on bouncing in the range.”

The overall cryptocurrency market cap now stands at $1.744 trillion and Bitcoin’s dominance rate is 42.6%.

Warhammer 40K fan project Astartes leads Games Workshop to create new, official animations

Astartes is a fan-made animated series that follows a squad of Space Marines as they go about one of their bloody missions in the Warhammer 40,000 franchise. The project was created by Syama Pedersen, and racked up millions of views on YouTube. Games Workshop took notice of the project’s success, and hired Pedersen to the team. Now, a wave of new, official Warhammer animations is on the way, which is an exciting prospect for fans of Astartes’ painstakingly animated action.

There’s a rich history of Warhammer fan projects turning official as Games Workshop notices animators and filmmakers putting their takes on the long-running franchise on YouTube. Richard Boylan, a cinematic designer at Electronic Arts, released projects like Helsreach and Guardsman on YouTube. That turned into Angels of Death, an upcoming series following the Blood Angels Space Marines. This is the debut show from Warhammer Storyforge.

Pedersen is now working on a follow-up to Astartes as part of the Warhammer Animation Team. There are other newly announced projects under that umbrella. Lost Legion Studios is working on The Exodite, a story about the T’au, a rising empire in service to a philosophy called the Greater Good. Paxel Art is working on Primaris: The Last Templar, which follows the Black Templars. Meanwhile, Iron Within comes from Codex Film, showing the Iron Warriors in action against the Drukthari, also known as Dark Eldar.

There’s certainly a demand for all of this Warhammer 40K media, with boxed sets like the limited-edition Indomitus selling out immediately. Big Light Productions, the team behind Amazon’s The Man in the High Castle, is developing a live-action show based off the Eisnhorn novels by Dan Abnett.
