‘Black Adam’ Grosses $30M In First Three Days Overseas – Deadline

SATURDAY UPDATE: Black Adam added a host of 19 markets on Friday and has now cumed $30.2M through its first three days at the international box office. Friday rocked $15.8M with the Dwayne Johnson-starrer ranking as the No. 1 U.S. film in all 76 markets in release. With these results, we are still eyeing the $70M range for the opening weekend overseas.

In new starts, Friday added the UK with $2M on 1,500 screens and ranking a clear No. 1 with 58% share of the Top 5 films.  The results are +52% over Shazam!, 53% ahead of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, 129% above Jungle Cruise and 291% ahead of Skyscraper.  IMAX share was a very solid 9% of the total box office.

Also joining the fray, Spain debuted on Friday to $587K on 689 screens. Black Adam dominated the market with nearly 60% share of the Top 5; premium formats are performing very well capturing 4.6% of the total box office. Opening day results are tracking ahead of Jumanji 2 (+38%), Shazam! (+79%), Skyscraper (+187%) and Jungle Cruise (+231%).

Currently, the Top 5 markets through Friday are the UK ($2M), Mexico ($1.9M), Brazil ($1.8M), India ($1.7M) and Australia ($1.7M).

Anecdotally, we are hearing the family play is stronger than expected.

More to come on Sunday…

PREVIOUS, FRIDAY: Warner Bros/New Line/DC’s Black Adam began rolling out at the international box office on Wednesday, and through Thursday has rocked to $13.8M from 57 markets. Today adds the UK and Spain as overseas release continues.

Initial markets to go on Wednesday included France and Korea. In the former, the Dwayne Johnson-starrer has grossed $1M through its first two days. In Korea, the movie leads all play by a wide margin. It is following the typical cycle in the market of a top start on Wednesday, then a drop on Thursday, and a bounce on Friday and has a running cume of $1.3M through today (that total is not reflected in the two-day offshore cume above).

A notable start on Thursday was India with $1M which marks the second biggest ever debut for Warner Bros and the biggest also for DC. The Diwali holiday is ahead.

Elsewhere, Mexico’s $850K Thursday start was 9% above Johnson-starrer Jumanji: The Next Level and 63% over his 2018 actioner Skyscraper

In Australia, the $750K Thursday opening was 80% higher than Skyscraper and 87% above Shazam!

While an overseas weekend doesn’t really get borne out until we get Friday numbers, we are expecting Black Adam to land close to our projected opening range; critics are down on it, but fans are faithful.  As Anthony reported, the domestic previews were robust.

Audiences are hungering for new product, and, wherever it lands, let’s hope this is the kickstart for times ahead.

More to come throughout the weekend…

Newlywed Ben Affleck finds a buyer for luxe $30M LA mansion

Ben Affleck doesn’t only have a new wife to celebrate, but also a fast deal for his California mansion.

Just three weeks ago, Affleck listed the seven-bedroom, nine-bathroom estate in the affluent Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles for $29.99 million — a property he purchased for $19 million in 2018 following his split from Jennifer Garner.

Now, a buyer has just come forward with an offer that Affleck couldn’t refuse, TMZ reports.

However, the identity of the soon-to-be owner and the purchase price for the spread aren’t yet known. What’s certain is that person will be living a life of luxury there.

The home, located in the Riviera Country Club, spans no fewer than 13,453 square feet. It has a movie theater, a recreation room with a full bar, a gym and a temperature-controlled wine cellar. There’s also a family room with a fireplace and glass doors to the outdoors.

Outside, there’s a pool with a waterslide, a covered patio with heaters for outdoor dining and a separate guest house.

Affleck, 50, and Jennifer Lopez, 53 — who just returned from their week-long honeymoon in Italy — are reportedly planning to move into her home in Bel-Air once its remodel is complete. For now, TMZ adds, they’re renting the $60 million Beverly Hills compound of Aussie billionaire James Packer.

Santiago Arana and Amir Mostame of the Agency repped the listing.

‘Bullet Train’ Heads for $30M Opening – The Hollywood Reporter

David Leitch’s Bullet Train easily topped the Friday chart with an opening day gross of $12.6 million, including $4.6 million in Thursday previews.

Brad Pitt leads a star-packed cast in this tale of an assassin roaming a high-speed Japanese bullet train. Other names on the marquee include Joey King, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Brian Tyree Henry, Andrew Koji, Hiroyuki Sanada, Michael Shannon and Sandra Bullock.

Sony, which has been waging an aggressive marketing campaign in hopes of whipping up interest, is eyeing a domestic debut in the $30 million range. Critics haven’t exactly embraced Bullet Train, which currently holds a 53 percent critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences bestowed the film with a B+ CinemaScore.

Bullet Train is the last major studio offering of the summer, putting increased pressure on the movie’s performance. Generally, the summer box office season lasts until Labor Day, but delays due to the pandemic continue and studios are seeing some of their films delayed in postproduction.

The weekend’s other new offering is Jay Chandrasekhar’s comedy Easter Sunday, starring Jo Koy as a struggling actor and comedian who attends a raucous holiday meal with his Filipino family.

Easter Sunday is headed for a $5 million debut after earning $2 million on Friday, in line with expectations.

Jimmy O. Yang, Tia Carrere, Brandon Wardell, Eva Noblezada, Lydia Gaston, Asif Ali, Rodney To, Tiffany Haddish and Lou Diamond Phillips star in the Universal film.

Largest white diamond ever going to auction has potential $30M value

A pear-shaped diamond that appears to be wider than a human thumb is going up for auction — and it’s projected to be worth tens of millions of dollars.

The 228.31-carat diamond, which has been nicknamed “The Rock,” will be sold at a Christie’s auction in Switzerland on May 11, 2022.

GIANT AUSTRALIAN OPAL SELLS FOR $144K IN ALASKA: ‘LOCKED UP LONG ENOUGH’

The auction is titled Geneva Magnificent Jewels, and it will be a part of the British auction house’s larger “Luxury Week” sales event.

Christie’s estimates The Rock’s value is between $20 million and $30 million.

The rare gemstone was mined and polished in South Africa more than 20 years ago and is reportedly the largest white diamond ever to appear for sale at auction, Christie’s claims.

“The Rock will join the very best of legendary gemstones which have passed through Christie’s global salerooms since 1766,” said Rahul Kadakia, head of jewelry at Christie’s International, in a statement.

AUCTION HOUSES STOP RUSSIAN ART SALES AS RUSSIA-UKRAINE WAR DRAGS ON: ‘STRICT COMPLIANCE’

He continued, “The market for diamonds is particularly vibrant, and we are confident that this sensational gemstone will capture the attention of collectors across the globe this spring season.”

Before the auction, the diamond will be displayed for viewing at different Christie’s show houses around the world.

First, it will be displayed at Christie’s Dubai from March 26 to March 29; then it will make pit stops in Taipei and at Rockefeller Plaza in New York City from April 29 to May 1.

During Christie’s Luxury week, the diamond will be displayed at the Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues Geneva from May 6 to May 11.

BLACK DIAMOND BELIEVED TO BE FROM OUTER SPACE COULD FETCH $6.8M AT AUCTION: ‘EXCEPTIONALLY RARE’

The Rock has been graded by the Gemmological Institute of America (GIA). An authentication letter from the gem institute and lab comes with the diamond.

Christie’s prior white diamond auction record was a rectangular cut-cornered stone that weighed about 163.41 carats, which sold for $33.7 million in November 2017.

Unlike other diamonds on the market, white diamonds “can range from colorless (like a drop of pure water) to having tints of light yellow, light brown or gray,” according to the GIA’s website.

“The rarity, and therefore the value, of these diamonds is based in part on how closely they approach colorlessness.”

US records over 30M coronavirus cases amid vaccination effort

The U.S. on Wednesday surpassed 30 million cases of COVID-19, highlighting the continued threat of the virus even as the country makes progress on vaccinations.

While new cases per day have decreased significantly from their peak in January, positivity totals remain high, at around 55,000 cases per day.

As more vulnerable people get vaccinated, the number of deaths is declining, but there are still about 1,000 people dying from the virus every day.

Over one year into the pandemic, Americans appear to be getting restless after months of lockdowns.

Scenes of hundreds of spring breakers flooding the streets, beaches and restaurants in Miami Beach, Fla., have prompted health officials to urge people not to let down their guard.

Health officials have also warned against states lifting coronavirus restrictions until a wider share of the population is vaccinated.

Leaders in states like Texas and Mississippi have lifted coronavirus restrictions, including mask mandates and social distancing requirements in businesses.

Whether or not we’re going to be turning that corner still remains to be seen,’ ” Anthony FauciAnthony FauciThe Hill’s Morning Report – Biden leans heavily into gun control Overnight Health Care: AstraZeneca may have included outdated data on vaccine trial, officials say | Pelosi says drug pricing measure under discussion for infrastructure package | Biden administration extends special ObamaCare enrollment until August The Hill’s 12:30 Report – Presented by Facebook – Happy anniversary to ObamaCare MORE, the government’s top infectious disease expert, said Wednesday at a White House briefing.

With around 55,000 cases every day, “I don’t think you can declare victory and say you’ve turned the corner,” he added. “You’ve got to continue to do what we’re doing: more vaccinations and continue to do public health measures until we actually do turn the corner.”

The country is now vaccinating people at a solid clip, around 2.5 million shots per day.

Among people age 65 and older, the most vulnerable group, 70 percent have now received at least one shot, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Data.

Still, among all adults, about 18 percent are fully vaccinated, and 33 percent have received at least one dose, highlighting that there is still a significant way to go in vaccinating the public before a full “return to normal” can occur.

Experts say people should still wear masks when in public and avoid crowds and travel.
