Xbox game releases — August 22nd to 28th
Next week, 19 more games join the Xbox platform, including Death Stranding, Saints Row, F1 Manager 2022, Midnight Fight Express, and Soul Hackers 2.
It’s a busy one next week, folks. A whopping 19 games, including some heavy hitters, are coming to Xbox. Parkland shooting trial: Jurors visit shooting site on victim Joaquin Oliver’s 22nd birthday
The visit, Judge Elizabeth Scherer explained to jurors Wednesday, was meant to help them analyze the evidence presented so far in the trial of Nikolas Cruz, who faces either the death penalty or life in prison after pleading guilty to 17 counts of murder and 17 counts of attempted murder.
The jury view Thursday came more than four years and five months after the shooting, on what would have been victim Joaquin Oliver’s 22nd birthday, his parents told CNN.
Joaquin’s mother, Patricia Oliver, said only that she hoped “emotions” would be the jurors’ main takeaway after visiting the building, which was closed to preserve it for the trial. Officials have said it will be torn down.
“We were, of course, knowing that this moment will arrive. It’s a moment that is part of a process,” said Manuel Oliver, Joaquin’s father, now an activist and organizer aiming to address gun violence. “The most important thing here is what happened to our son, the way he suffered that day and what are we capable of doing after that. That’s what really matters here.”
Jurors were instructed Wednesday to “avoid touching, manipulating or moving anything.” The judge also told them to explore the scene on their own and at their own pace, moving as a group from floor to floor. Cruz did not attend the visit, telling the judge Thursday morning in response to her questioning that it was his decision not to go.
“Nothing will be explained or pointed out to you,” the judge’s instructions said. Jurors were also told to avoid speaking to anyone until the viewing was complete.
Jurors were not allowed to have a smartphone, smartwatch or any type of camera, during the viewing. In court, attorneys encouraged the judge to ask jurors to wear closed-toe shoes because they could encounter glass on the floor.
The current phase of the trial is to determine Cruz’s sentence: Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty, while Cruz’s defense attorneys are asking the jury for a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. To recommend a death sentence, jurors must be unanimous. If they do so, the judge could choose to follow the recommendation or sentence Cruz to life instead.
‘I can’t truly be happy if I smile,’ victim’s father testifies
Following the visit, more victim impact statements are expected in court, the judge said, with more of the victims’ families taking the stand to testify about the toll of the massacre and the unique qualities of their lost loved ones.
Much of the testimony in the Broward County court this week — particularly from the parents of the 14 students killed — has focused on all the things the victims and their families will never get to do and the irreparable damage to their everyday lives.
“Our family is broken. There is this constant emptiness,” said Max Schachter, the father of 14-year-old Alex, who loved chocolate chip cookies, playing the trombone and video games.
“I feel I can’t truly be happy if I smile,” Schachter said Wednesday. “I know that behind that smile is the sharp realization that part of me will always be sad and miserable because Alex isn’t here.”
The loss of her daughter Meadow Pollack, 18, has “destroyed” Shara Kaplan’s life, she told the jury Tuesday, “and my capability of ever living a productive existence.” To articulate how her daughter’s death impacted her, she said, she would have to rip out her heart and show them how it had shattered into a million pieces.
And the Hoyer family will never be the same. “We were a family unit of five always trying to fit into a world set up for even numbers,” said Tom Hoyer, whose 15-year-old son Luke — the youngest of three — was killed. “Two-, four-, six-seat tables in a restaurant. Two-, four-, six-ticket packages to events. Things like that.”
But the Hoyers are no longer a family of five, and “never again will the world feel right, now that we’re a family of four,” Hoyer said.
“When Luke died something went missing in me,” he said. “And I’ll never, never get over that feeling.”
To make their sentencing decision, jurors will hear prosecutors and defense attorneys argue aggravating factors and mitigating circumstances — reasons Cruz should or should not be executed.
The victim impact statements add another layer, giving the families and friends of the victims their own day in court, though the judge told the jury the statements are not meant to be weighed as aggravating factors.

French Open 2022 Final, Highlights: Rafael Nadal on Sunday won a record-extending 22 Grand Slam title after beating Casper Ruud in the final of French Open men’s singles final at the Court Philipp-Chatrier. Nadal continued his unbeaten run in finals at Roland Garros, defeating Ruud 6-3, 6-3, 6-0 to clinch his record-extending 14th French Open title. Nadal also became the oldest player to win the French Open. Despite being broken early in the second serve, Nadal responded with two breaks of his own before sealing the second set 6-3. Earlier, Nadal won the first set 6-3 after breaking Ruud’s serve twice. The Norwegian did manage to break back Nadal once but his poor first serve percentage saw him come out as the second best.

March 22 (UPI) — NASA’s Mars helicopter Ingenuity completed its 22nd flight over the weekend, the space agency announced. “The trip lasted 101.4 seconds and Ingenuity got up to 33 feet in the air,” NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory said in a tweet Monday. “The team is planning another flight perhaps as early as later this week.”
During its first 21 flights, Ingenuity flew a total of 15,247 feet and stayed in the air for nearly 39 minutes, according to a flight log from the mission team.
Ingenuity has been scouting possible routes and destinations for Perseverance as the rover hunts for signs of ancient life on Mars.
The pair landed in Mars’ Jezero Crater in February 2021, a site that hosted a lake and river delta billions of years ago.
Also Tuesday, NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter captured an image of China’s Zhurong rover on the surface.
The spacecraft’s High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment camera captured abut 0.93 miles of tracks Zhurong has made traveling since landing in May 2021, showing it inspected the parachute and backshell that helped it land on the planet and surveyed surface features such as dunes.

Martian sunsets typically stand out for their distinctive blue color as fine dust in the atmosphere permits blue light to penetrate the atmosphere more efficiently than colors with longer wavelengths. Mars helicopter Ingenuity soars on 22nd Red Planet flight
NASA’s Mars helicopter Ingenuity has done it again, soaring successfully on its 22nd Red Planet flight.
The 4-pound (1.8 kilograms) Ingenuity stayed aloft for 101.4 seconds and reached a maximum altitude of 33 feet (10 meters) during the sortie, which took place on Sunday (March 20), according to a Monday (March 21) tweet by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Southern California, which manages Ingenuity’s mission.
Ingenuity and NASA’s Perseverance rover landed together inside Mars’ Jezero Crater in February 2021. Jezero hosted a lake and a river delta billions of years ago, making it a great spot for the life-hunting, sample-caching Perseverance to explore, NASA officials have said.

The little chopper quickly aced its five-flight original mission, which was designed to show that aerial exploration is possible on Mars. After this success, NASA granted Ingenuity a mission extension, during which the rotorcraft has been serving as a scout for Perseverance.
The rover’s handlers are currently steering Perseverance toward an accessible part of the ancient delta, and Ingenuity’s observations are helping them pick the best route, mission team members have said.
During its first 21 flights, Ingenuity flew a total of 15,247 feet (4,647 m) and stayed in the air for nearly 39 minutes, according to a flight log maintained by the mission team.
Those numbers should continue to grow beyond the additions provided by Sunday’s flight; Ingenuity is in good health, JPL officials have said, and NASA recently extended the helicopter’s operations again, through at least this September.

PlatinumGames’ long-awaited shoot ’em up ‘Sol Cresta’ arrives February 22nd
PlatinumGames will release on February 22nd, the studio announced this weekend. The developer had hoped to have the shmup ready by the end of 2021, but made the last-minute decision to delay it to give its development team more time for polish. With a new release date locked in, Platinum says fans will have the chance to pick up Sol Cresta on PC, Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 for $40.
The Cresta series has been around since the 1980s. You can play Moon Cresta and Terra Cresta, two of the franchise’s more recent entries, through the collection on PS4. What makes Sol Cresta interesting is that it started life as an . After playing such a cruel joke on fans in 2020, Platinum came back exactly one year later to announce it was actively developing the game.

Sony has announced that its traditional, annual January Sale will get underway on 22nd December, and if history has taught us anything, this is usually the big one. “Our January Sale is going to be so huge we just can’t keep it wrapped up for much longer,” the manufacturer said in a promotional email.
Typically, the January Sale sees thousands of games and expansion packs discounted, spanning the biggest names like FIFA and Assassin’s Creed through to smaller indie titles and everything in between. We already know that Far Cry 6, for example, will be 40 per cent off over the holidays because that was previously confirmed by Ubisoft. Expect similar deals across the board.

Huawei’s next folding phone is coming on February 22nd
Huawei will announce a new flagship foldable phone later this month, according to a Weibo post on the company’s official page. Based on the name, the Mate X2 sounds like it should be a more substantial followup to the original Mate X than Huawei’s last foldable phone, the faster and slightly tweaked Mate XS.
Unless Huawei is being deliberately cryptic, the teaser image for the Mate X2 actually suggests that the phone could possibly switch to a different folding screen design with the flexible panel on the inside, like Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold line. The previous Mate X phones had a single panel that wrapped around the outside when closed, like Royole’s Flexpai devices.
Otherwise, there’s not much in the way of details on the Mate X2 yet. It’s likely that it’ll have the same Kirin 9000 processor found in the Mate 40 Pro, and of course Huawei probably still won’t be able to include Google apps and services on board, limiting the device’s viability outside of China unless something changes unexpectedly quickly with the new Biden administration’s approach to sanctions. Huawei’s hardware is always worth paying attention to, though, so stay tuned for more news and details on February 22nd.
