Sources: Wounded teen was the gunman in SEPTA Broad Street Line shooting that killed 21-year-old

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Sources tell Action News the teenager wounded during a fatal shooting on a SEPTA subway on Monday afternoon was the one who fired the shots that killed a 21-year-old man.

Philadelphia police had been searching for the gunman who shot the man multiple times on the Broad Street Line train around 2:40 p.m. in the city’s Francisville section.

The victim was taken to Temple University Hospital where he died a short time later.

Police said a 16-year-old male was shot in the arm during the incident. He was originally reported to be an innocent bystander, however, sources tell Action News that is not the case.

According to sources, the teenager got onto the subway at the Susquehanna Avenue stop and tried to rob the 21-year-old man.

Sources say a struggle ensued and the teenager shot the victim multiple times. Philadelphia police called the shooting a “targeted attack.”

Fourteen fire cartridge casings were found at the scene. Earlier reports said the victim was shot 11 times, but sources say it may have been closer to six.

The victim, who had a permit to carry, was also armed and shot the teenager in the arm.

There were at least a dozen passengers aboard the train car, but no other injuries were reported.

Sources say the 16-year-old later showed up at the hospital but told police he was shot on a basketball court. He denied being shot on the subway at Broad Street and Fairmount Avenue.

That all changed though when his mother arrived at the hospital, sources say.

The mother allegedly knew her son was lying and he eventually confessed to the shooting.

Sources say he told police where he hid the gun.

The teen was released from the hospital and remains in custody.

Action News is told the 16-year-old has two prior arrests for theft.

There is no word on charges.

Coweta County gun range triple murder: 21-year-old man arrested

One person has been taken into custody for the murder of three people at a Coweta County gun range. The arrest comes exactly a week after the crime shook the Grantville community.

Jacob Christian Muse, 21, of College Park, was charged with three counts of malice murder, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said.

Details of what led investigators to the arrest of Muse were not immediately available.

Tommy and Evelyn Hawk and their grandson Luke were found the night of April 8 at the Lock, Stock & Barrel, which is owned by the family.

The Hawk family did not have a comment immediately following the arrest.

Muse was booked into the Coweta County jail.

Officials said the joint investigation into the murders remains open and very active.

This story is breaking. Check back for details. If you have additional information, pictures, or video email newstipsatlanta@fox.com.

Who were the victims of the Granville gun range shooting?

Grantville Police Chief Steve Whitlock said 71-year-old Tommy Hawk, the owner of Lock, Stock & Barrel, died in the shooting as well as his wife Evelyn and their grandson Luke.

Luke Hawks was either 19 or 18 years old, according to Grantville police.

Luke is the son of Coweta County coroner Richard Hawk, who was one of the first at the scene on Friday night. Tommy Hawk and Evelyn Hawk were Richard Hawk’s parents.

When, where was the gun range shooting?

The shooting happened sometime on the night of April 8 after the business closed.

Lock, Stock & Barrel is located at 514 Bohannon Road in Grantville.

Initially the investigators said the robbery happened between 5:30 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Grantville police said officers were dispatched to the scene shortly after 8 p.m.

What was stolen from the Grantville gun range?

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said an unknown number of guns were missing, but Grantville police estimated about 40 guns were missing.

Police also said someone took a camera DVR from the business.

What agencies are assisting in the Grantville gun range shooting investigation?

It’s the Grantville Police Department’s case, but the small department employs about 13 officers, the chief said Monday.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation and ATF are assisting.

Whitlock also said the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office and the Troup County Sheriff’s Office are also providing some support.

Reward in Grantville gun range shooting investigation

There was a combined reward of $25,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the investigation.

ATF, the City of Grantville, Georgia and the National Shooting Sports Foundation, the trade association for the firearms industry, announced a combined reward of up to $15,000.

Gov. Brian Kemp issued an executive order to add $10,000 to the reward, increasing it to a total of $25,000.

It was not immediately known if anyone will be claiming the reward money.

21-Year-Old Quintez Brown Charged in ‘Attempted Assassination’ of Louisville Mayoral Candidate Craig Greenberg

A 21-year-old activist, journalist and candidate for office has been arrested and charged in connection with the “attempted assassination” of a Louisville mayoral candidate, local authorities said late Monday.

Quintez Brown was taken into custody without incident after police said a gunman walked into candidate Craig Greenberg’s office hours early, and opened fire.

“When we greeted him, he pulled out a gun aimed directly at me, and began shooting,” Greenberg recalled at an afternoon news conference.

Brown has been charged with attempted murder and four counts of wanton endangerment, according to a Louisville Metro Police spokesperson.

The 21-year-old was identified as “a former intern and editorial columnist” of the Louisville Courier-Journal by the paper itself, where he wrote that he had studied philosophy and Pan-Africanism while studying at the University of Louisville, where he’d previously served as the opinion editor of the school’s newspaper, the Cardinal.

Miraculously, no one was harmed in the Monday morning shooting, which Greenberg called “a surreal experience.” A police spokesperson told The Daily Beast that Greenberg and his staff were uninjured—but a bullet did strike the back of Greenberg’s sweater.

A brave staffer managed to shut the door, and the group barricaded themselves inside while the shooter fled, the lawyer said at the conference.

“We are shaken, but safe,” he added.

While Brown’s motive remains unclear, Louisville Metro Police Department Chief Erika Shields said that early evidence suggests that the shooter “acted alone” and deliberately targeted the Democrat.

Metro Council President David James was the first to call the incident “an attempted assassination.”

Greenberg refused to comment on whether he recognized the gunman.

Brown wrote his first column for the Courier-Journal in 2018, describing how he’d staged a sit-in at a local high school to demand the termination of a school official who’d used racially insensitive language.

He went on to pen dozens of columns for the paper, writing largely about racism, poverty, and violence.

After getting involved in the racial justice protests in the summer of 2020, Brown vanished for roughly two weeks, according to the Courier-Journal. His family asked for privacy upon his reappearance.

Several months later, Brown posted a video to Twitter to announce he would be running to represent a local district on Louisville’s Metro Council.

In his penultimate column for the Courier-Journal, titled “How the American education system destroyed me as a Black student,” Brown wrote, “I’m America’s bright future. I’ve become another symbol of neoliberal progress where my title and my ‘recognized’ name will give hope to those in desperate need of food, security and shelter.”

“And thus I’ve become destroyed,” he concluded. “No longer myself. But another tool of oppression.”

Mayoral candidate Timothy Findley added in a Monday tweet that he was “praying for the saftey [sic] of Craig Greenberg and staff” before calling the incident “unacceptable.”

According to his campaign website, Greenberg is an attorney and former CEO of 21C Museum Hotels. The Harvard law school graduate and member of the University of Louisville Board of Trustees has previously said that public safety would be his top priority if elected.

Last month, Greenberg released a public safety plan that called for a “community-oriented police force.”

“Louisville is in a tough spot,” Greenberg said in a statement accompanying the plan. “Our neighborhoods feel less safe, violent crime is rising, and too many people are trapped in addiction. We see abandoned cars on the streets and graffiti and trash in many neighborhoods. You’ve shared your concerns with me as I have run through every precinct in our city. I share your worry and sense of urgency to fix this and fix this now.”

21-year-old Kansas state lawmaker arrested for second time in a month

A 21-year-old Kansas state lawmaker was arrested on Saturday for the second time in a month, prompting more calls for his resignation or ouster from office.

State Rep. Aaron Coleman (D), who represents Kansas City, Kansas, in the state legislature, was arrested by a state trooper at around 1 a.m. on Saturday on suspicion that he was driving while intoxicated, according to The Associated Press.

He was detained on Interstate 70 near Lawrence and taken to the Douglas County Jail. He was released after posting bond, according to the AP.

The Hill reached out to Coleman for comment.

When Coleman was arrested Saturday morning, he was already out on bond for a previous arrest on a charge of domestic battery, according to the AP. Police said Coleman got in a fight with his 18-year-old brother during which he pushed, hit and spit on him.

Authorities said the fight broke out because Coleman’s brother was going to get baptized, the AP reported, citing court documents. Coleman was also “uncooperative” with police and “extremely erratic” after the fight, which took place on Oct. 30, according to an affidavit.

Coleman has been under scrutiny since being elected to the Kansas state legislature in 2020. He bested incumbent state Rep. Stan Frownfelter (D) by 14 points in the Democratic primary before winning the general election.

He briefly suspended his campaign in August 2020 after admitting to sending revenge porn and cyberbullying girls while in middle school but reversed course days later.

A number of local leaders are now calling on Coleman to resign.

Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly (D) in a statement said Coleman is “not fit to serve” and that his “continued presence in the Legislature is a disservice to his constituents.”

“He should resign immediately and seek the treatment that he needs. If he does not resign, the Legislature should use its process to remove him from office,” she added, according to CBS 5.

House Democratic Leader Tom Sawyer said Coleman should “resign and concentrate on getting the help he badly needs,” according to KCUR.

“The stress of the legislature is not a healthy environment for someone in this mental state,” he added.

Coleman was forbidden from entering the Kansas Department of Labor’s offices last month, according to the AP, after he allegedly acted in a disruptive way. The lawmaker, however, said he was trying to assist his constituents.

Astroworld Festival: Family of 21-year-old Axel Acosta Avila who died at the concert among 125 plaintiffs who filed a lawsuit

The lawsuit seeks damages for loss of mental and physical health, and human life, according to the petition filed by the Buzbee Law Firm in Harris County, Texas.

Acosta Avila, a 21-year-old from Tieton, Washington, attended the festival alone, his aunt Cynthia Acosta told CNN affiliate KTRK. “It was his first time going to an event like that,” she told the Houston station.

He was a junior at Western Washington University and had an interest in computer science, according to the university.

The lawsuit filed on behalf of Acosta Avila’s family names, among others, event organizers Live Nation and Travis Scott, who was performing at the time of the deadly crowd surge. The suit also names performer Drake and Apple, Inc., which the lawsuit said streamed the event on its Apple Music platform.

The lawsuit is seeking more than $750 million.

“The damages sought in this case attempts to fix, help, or make up for the harms and losses suffered by these Plaintiffs,” the lawsuit reads. “The quantum sought includes sufficient punitive damages to punish and make an example of all involved in the streaming, promotion, organization and failed execution of the concert, and also to encourage those who engage in such activity in the future to do so with safety at the forefront.”

CNN has reached out to Scott, Drake, Live Nation, Apple and other named defendants for comment on the lawsuit.

In a statement released last week, Scott said he “is distraught by the situation and desperately wishes to share his condolences and provide aid to (the victims) as soon as possible.” Scott has said he will pay for the victims’ funerals.
Live Nation previously said it is “heartbroken for those lost and impacted at Astroworld,” and is “working to provide as much information and assistance as possible to the local authorities as they investigate the situation.”
Drake issued a statement on his Instagram account last week, calling the incident a “devastating tragedy.”

“My heart is broken for the families and friends of those who lost their lives and for anyone who is suffering. I will continue to pray for all of them and will be of service in any way I can,” he added.

At least 140 lawsuits have been filed in the wake of the tragedy, according to Harris County District Court records.

One of those lawsuits was filed by the family of 9-year-old Ezra Blount, who died Sunday after being placed in a medically inducted coma due to injuries sustained at the concert, according to a statement from family attorney Ben Crump.

The lawsuit accuses event organizers of negligence, the statement said.

Music festival takes tragic turn

The Astroworld Festival turned deadly as concertgoers were crushed, trampled and struggled to breathe as the packed crowd surged toward an outdoor stage when Scott, a headliner, started performing on November 5.
Information from fire and police officials at the festival reveal a situation that grew increasingly dangerous before and during Scott’s set. Ambulances transported a handful of injured concertgoers to the hospital that morning and afternoon, according to Houston Fire Department logs.

Shortly before 5 p.m., the Houston Police Department reported “dangerous crowd conditions” at one stage. Eight minutes before Scott took the stage at 9 p.m., more than 260 people had already been treated, according to the logs, which did not specify the type of treatment. And a 9:18 p.m. entry noted a “crush injury.”

Less than half an hour into Scott’s performance, the log states: “This is when it all got real.”

“Multiple people trampled, passed out at front of stage” at 9:33 p.m, police reported. Minutes later, a police operator reported five 911 calls about “unconscious persons in crowd. Report of possible CPR.”

At least one police officer reported the main stage compromised about 9:11 p.m., the Houston Chronicle reported Thursday, citing emergency radio chatter.

The audio included reports of breached barricades, people jumping gates, and breathing and cardiac problems, the newspaper reported. The radio chatter continued until 10:15 p.m., the Chronicle reported. CNN has reached out to the Houston Police Department for comment.

It is unclear what Scott saw from the stage and whether he was aware of the crowd conditions, but he continued to perform until about 10:10 p.m. That was after officials declared the concert a “mass casualty event,” according to Houston Fire Chief Samuel Peña.

Scott did not know of the mass casualty declaration until the following morning, his lawyer has said.
