Nick Carter sued for alleged sexual assault of 17-year-old girl in 2001 | Music

Backstreet Boys member Nick Carter has been sued for sexual battery involving an incident with a minor in 2001.

According to the lawsuit, first reported by TMZ and later obtained by Rolling Stone, Shannon Ruth, who was 17 at the time, claims she was invited by Carter, then 21, on to the Backstreet Boys’ tour bus after a concert in Tacoma, Washington. Ruth also spoke at a press conference today.

A source close to Carter told TMZ the accusations are “categorically false” and that “Nick is focusing on his family and mourning the death of his brother”, singer and rapper Aaron Carter, who died last month at age 34.

Legal documents say Ruth, who has autism and cerebral palsy, was asked by Carter if she wanted a drink. When she asked for apple juice, he offered her cranberry. She says the red-colored drink, which Carter called “VIP juice”, tasted “off”, but she drank it so as not to be rude. She now believes it was a mixture of cranberry juice and alcohol.

The suit claims that Carter then led Ruth to the tour bus bathroom and ordered her to perform oral sex on him. She says she cried throughout while he kept instructing her.

Ruth says Carter then took her to a bed and continued to sexually assault her, called her a “retarded little bitch” and said no one would believe when she said she’d tell people about his behavior.

“Just because Nick Carter is a celebrity does not mean that he is excused from his crimes,” Ruth said at the press conference. “I am a survivor and always will be.”

According to the documents, Ruth was a virgin at the time and contracted HPV after the encounter. She is now seeking damages.

These are not the first allegations of sexual assault against Carter. In 2018, Melissa Schuman, a former member of the girl band Dream, publicly claimed Carter forced her to have sex “against my will” when he was 22 and she was 18.

Carter denied the allegations, saying in a statement: “I am shocked and saddened by Ms Schuman’s accusations. Melissa never expressed to me while we were together or at any time since that anything we did was not consensual … This is the first that I am hearing about these accusations, nearly two decades later. It is contrary to my nature and everything I hold dear to intentionally cause someone discomfort or harm.”

Schuman described being “traumatised” after the attack, saying she initially “wanted to lock it in a box in my mind and let the memories slowly suffocate as time went on”. She said she felt compelled to come forward after seeing online “victim shaming” of an unnamed woman who accused Carter and a friend of sexually assaulting her in 2006. Carter’s representative said the woman “fabricated the claims against Nick for one simple reason – she was hoping to extort money from him”.

The Guardian has reached out to Carter’s management for a response.

San Antonio police chief says officer shooting of 17-year-old at McDonald’s not justified and charges are coming

CNN
 —

[Breaking news update, published at 8:57 p.m. ET]

The San Antonio police officer who shot an unarmed 17-year-old eating in his car at a McDonald’s parking lot last week was charged Tuesday with two counts of aggravated assault by a public servant, the police department said.

The officer, identified as James Brennand, was fired following the October 2 shooting. He has been described by the department as a probationary officer with seven months’ experience.

[Original story, published at 10:13 a.m. ET]

The police shooting of an unarmed 17-year-old eating in his car at a McDonald’s parking lot last week was “not justified” and authorities expect to file criminal charges against the officer by the end of the week, San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said Tuesday.

“The video was horrific,” the chief told CNN’s Brianna Keilar. “There is no question in anybody’s mind looking at that video that the shooting is not justified.”

McManus said he recognized an issue immediately upon arriving to the scene of the October 2 shooting, based on the location of the bullet holes.

“We have a policy that prohibits officers from shooting at vehicles, moving vehicles, except if their life is in immediate – their life or someone else’s life – is in immediate danger,” he said.

“When I saw it, the location of the bullet holes, I had an issue with it right away. You can tell by looking at the vehicles, which way the vehicle is moving when the shots are fired, and this vehicle, it was very telling to me, that this vehicle was moving away from the officer, and moving parallel with the officer, so it was pretty clear to me at that point that we were going to have an issue.”

He said he expects the officer to be charged with two counts of aggravated assault by the end of the week, charges that could rise to homicide if the 17-year-old does not survive.

Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales said late last week there was the possibility of charging Brennand with a crime.

Attempts to reach Brennand have not been successful.

The police chief’s comments come a week after James Brennand, a probationary officer with seven months of experience, shot 17-year-old Erik Cantu as the teenager sat in his car eating fast food.

According to police, Brennand was handling an unrelated disturbance call at the McDonald’s on October 2 when he saw a car he believed had evaded police the previous day and called for backup.

Before backup officers arrived, body camera video released by police shows the officer walk up to the driver’s side of the car, open the door, and order the driver out. The visibly startled teen, who was in the driver’s seat eating, put the car in reverse and started backing up.

The police officer then opened fire five times on the car, according to the video. As the driver shifted the vehicle to move forward, body camera video showed the officer opening fire an additional five times as the car drove away.

Cantu was shot multiple times and is in critical condition and on a life support system, his family said Monday. A passenger in the vehicle was unhurt.

Brennand was fired in the wake of the shooting for violating the agency’s tactics, training and procedures, police said.

“It took us a couple of days to terminate Brennand, but he was gone pretty quickly,” McManus told CNN.

SAPD’s deadly force policy is explicit: “An officer in the path of an approaching vehicle shall attempt to move to a position of safety rather than discharging a firearm at the vehicle or any of the occupants of the vehicle.”

The policy further states that “officers should not shoot at any part of a vehicle in an attempt to disable the vehicle.”

While in the hospital, Cantu was initially charged with evading detention in a vehicle and assaulting the officer, who had claimed he was struck by the door of the car as the teen backed up.

However, his defense attorney Brian Powers said the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office notified him prosecutors would not be moving forward with charges. A spokesperson for the District Attorney’s office referred CNN to the county’s online court record system, which indicates both charges have been dismissed and the case closed.

“While Sunday’s shooting of an unarmed teenager by a then-San Antonio Police officer remains under investigation, the facts and evidence we have received so far led us to reject the charges against Erik Cantu for further investigation,” Gonzales’ office said in a statement.

“Once SAPD completes its investigation into the actions of former Officer James Brennand and submits the case to our office, our Civil Rights Division will fully review the filing. As we do with all officer-involved shootings that result in death or serious injury, we will submit the case to a Grand Jury for their consideration. Until that happens, we can make no further comment on this matter.”

17-year-old boy, stepmom arrested in killing of rapper PnB Rock at Roscoe’s Chicken & Waffles in South LA; father sought

SOUTH LOS ANGELES (KABC) — A 17-year-old boy and his stepmother have been arrested in connection with the murder of rapper PnB Rock, who was fatally shot earlier this month at a Roscoe’s Chicken & Waffles restaurant in South Los Angeles, Eyewitness News has learned.

A man who is the third suspect in the killing remains at large, according to the Los Angeles Police Department, which publicly released his name on Wednesday and described him as “armed and dangerous.” A source told Eyewitness News that the adult male suspect, Freddie Lee Trone, is the father of teen in custody.

The 17-year-old, who was arrested in the South Bay neighborhood of Lawndale, was booked on suspicion of murder, the LAPD said in a statement.

The teenager’s stepmother was identified by police as 32-year-old Shauntel Trone. She was taken into custody in Gardena and booked on suspicion of being an accessory to murder.

PnB Rock, born Rakim Hasheem Allen, was shot and killed at the restaurant on Sept. 12.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department, a suspect entered the restaurant and approached the rapper as he was having lunch with his girlfriend – who had already posted a picture of their food and their location on Instagram.

Investigators say the gunman shot him and stole some of his property, and also demanded property from the rapper’s girlfriend, before taking off in a getaway car.

The victim was transported to a local hospital and later pronounced dead.

Anyone with information about Trone’s whereabouts is urged to call LAPD homicide detectives at (323) 786-5146.

The 30-year-old PnB Rock was known for singles that include “Fleek” and “Selfish.”

Originally from Philadelphia, he was most recently based in Los Angeles. He had 2.5 million followers on Instagram.

After his death, fans gathered near the restaurant to mourn the popular musician.

“His music was excellent,” said fan Sheldon Thompson. “He didn’t rap about the wrong things. He rapped about the right things. And he had a bright future ahead of him. Just to hear he didn’t survive is heartbreaking.”

Some fans also suggested he may have been deliberately targeted after his location was posted on social media. Detectives are investigating if that is the case.

“If you’re famous you know not to post your location anywhere,” said fan Aremesha Rivers. “I really feel like there’s a lot of setups going on.”

The case against those arrested will be presented to the L.A. County district attorney’s office for filing consideration no later than Thursday, the LAPD said.

17-Year-Old Suspected GTA 6 Leaker Has Been Arrested

Image: Rockstar Games

Today, London City Police announced they had arrested a 17-year-old from Oxfordshire Thursday evening. While the police have yet to confirm why, it’s been reported that the teen was arrested in connection with the recent Uber and Grand Theft Auto VI leaks. The suspect remains in City Police custody at this time.

As reported by The Desk and reporter Matthew Keys, the arrest of the suspected 17-year-old GTA hacker by police in the United Kingdom was part of an investigation being conducted by the FBI and the UK’s Cyber Crime Unit. It had previously been reported that the FBI was likely looking into the recent hacks at Uber and Rockstar Games.

A source told The Desk that the teenager is being held on numerous charges, including conspiracy to attack at least two different computer systems.

It’s believed that the teenage hacker arrested Thursday evening in Oxfordshire is connected to the hacker group “Laspus$.” This group of hackers is allegedly also involved with high-profile digital intrusions at other large companies including Uber, Microsoft, Cisco, Samsung, Nvidia, and Okta. The group first showed up in 2021, hacking Brazil’s Ministry of Health. It was thought the group had gone inactive, but earlier this month it allegedly ramped up its activities again and targeted Uber and Rockstar Games.

The Grand Theft Auto VI leak that occurred over the weekend was one of the largest video game leaks in history. 90 video files showcasing early development footage of the next GTA game, which is assumed to be GTA VI, were posted on the GTA Forums and quickly spread across the internet. The footage seemed to confirm previous reports and rumors that GTA VI would be set in Vice City and would star two different characters, a Bonnie-and-Clyde-like criminal couple.

On Monday, September 19, following the leak, Rockstar Games confirmed that someone had “illegally” gained access to its files and shared them online. It also stated that this leak would not slow down production on the game and that it planned to reveal it in a more official way soon.
