What to Expect From the Next-Generation 14-Inch and 16-Inch MacBook Pro

Following a rumor that Apple has a product announcement planned for tomorrow, and the discovery of an unreleased MacBook Pro in a Canadian regulatory database, it appears that new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models might finally be imminent.

Ahead of the potential launch, we have recapped everything that we have heard so far about the next-generation 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro.

M2 Pro and M2 Max Chips

A key new feature of the next MacBook Pro models is expected to be M2 Pro and M2 Max chips for faster performance. Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman said those chips will offer only “marginal” performance improvements over the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips in the current models, as leaked benchmarks suggested last year.

Wi-Fi 6E

Wireless frequency ranges mentioned in the Canadian regulatory filing indicate that the new MacBook Pro will support Wi-Fi 6E, which extends Wi-Fi to the 6GHz band for more bandwidth, faster speeds, and lower latency. The current 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro support standard Wi-Fi 6, which is limited to 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands.

Faster RAM

The new MacBook Pro models are rumored to be equipped with “very high-bandwidth, high-speed RAM,” but details are unclear. On a purely speculative basis, it is possible that the new models could be equipped with Samsung’s latest LPDDR5X RAM for up to 33% increased memory bandwidth with up to 20% less power consumption.

No Design Changes

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and Gurman have both suggested that the new MacBook Pro models will have no external design changes and few other major features.

This aspect wouldn’t be too surprising, as Apple fully redesigned the high-end MacBook Pros in October 2021 with more ports like HDMI and MagSafe, a notch at the top of the display, an all-black keyboard area, and more. MacBooks often go multiple generations between major hardware changes, so a spec bump in 2023 is a reasonable expectation.

Quick Teardowns Offer First Look Inside 14 and 16-Inch MacBook Pro Models

Apple’s 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pro models are finally in the hands of customers, and one Reddit user has opened his up to give us a first look at the inside of the 10-core 14-inch machine.

14-inch MacBook Pro

In addition to sharing some great photos of the internals, Reddit User the_Ex_Lurker shared some thoughts on the process of getting into the new MacBook Pro.

Opening up the new MacBook Pro “seems identical” to the 2016-2012 MacBook Pro models, with Apple using pentalobe screws and clips that need to be dealt with to get inside. The batteries are not glued down and are instead held in place with iPhone-style adhesive pull tabs to make battery replacements simpler.

14-inch MacBook Pro

The keyboard deck is part of the unibody so it won’t be any easier to replace than existing keyboards, and the I/O ports are modular and should be relatively easy to replace. There is a dual fan setup inside the 14-inch model like the 16-inch model, and the fans are slightly larger than the fans in the old 13-inch MacBook Pro but are smaller than the fans in the 15-inch 2016 model.

Leaker L0vetodream also shared some teardown images of the 16-inch MacBook Pro model on Twitter. He said the M1 Max chip is “really large,” with the top down view showing off the dual fans and heat pipe. A translation of the original tweet is below with more detail.

16-inch MacBook Pro

MacBook Pro 16-inch with M1 Max first disassembled. The area of the new M1 Max chip is really large (see the comparison of the size of a 1 yuan coin) RAM is divided into four particles stacked on the chip to dissipate heat is a dual fan + single heat pipe overall modularity The design of the internal design is regular and maintenance is relatively convenient. This one we have is the 1T top-equipped version (the highest configuration in the non-customized version).

Both the 14 and 16-inch models look similar inside with the dual-fan setups and a set of six batteries, along with redesigned speaker systems.

16-inch MacBook Pro logic board

We should get a more in-depth teardown later this week from teardown site iFixit, which will give us additional information on the two machines.

New 16-inch MacBook Pro gets early hands-on and older model comparison

After the first unboxing video and real-life photos of the 14-inch MacBook Pro surfaced online yesterday, now it’s time for the first hands-on of the 16-inch MacBook Pro powered by the M1 Pro processor. As posted by a Reddit user, there’s a new video online posted by YouTuber SANG SÁNG SUỐT showing how the new 16-inch M1 Pro MacBook Pro looks in real life and compared to the old Intel 15-inch model.

In the video, more notably, you can see all the new ports: HDMI slot, headphone jack, three Thunderbolt ports, and an SD port as well. Not only that, we get to see how the notch – or the “webcam household” – works while in Safari. In this case, a black bar covers everything and the notch gets unnoticeable.

Compared to the Intel 15-inch model, this new 16-inch MacBook Pro looks slightly bigger, although it’s slightly smaller when compared to the 16-inch Intel model.

Apple Says High Power Mode on 16-Inch MacBook Pro With M1 Max Designed for Tasks Like Color Grading 8K ProRes Video

As we previously reported, we’ve received confirmation from Apple that 16-inch MacBook Pro models configured with an M1 Max chip feature a new High Power Mode that is designed to maximize performance during intensive, sustained workloads.

We’ve since come across a document from Apple that indicates users will be able to enable High Power Mode in System Preferences on a 16-inch MacBook Pro with an M1 Max chip running macOS Monterey. In the document, Apple says that High Power Mode will provide users with “extreme performance” for tasks like color grading 8K ProRes video.

It’s still unclear exactly how High Power Mode will function, but we should get a closer look at the feature next week when reviews of the new MacBook Pro models are shared. Based on code-level references to High Power Mode in the macOS Monterey beta found by MacRumors contributor Steve Moser, we do know that the feature “will optimize performance to better support resource-intensive tasks” and “may result in louder fan noise.”

Apple only confirmed High Power Mode being available on 16-inch MacBook Pro models with an M1 Max chip, so we presume the feature is not available on any 14-inch MacBook Pro models or any models configured with the M1 Pro chip.

9to5Mac‘s Filipe Espósito was first to discover references to High Power Mode in the macOS Monterey beta last month.

There are two configurations of the 16-inch MacBook Pro with the M1 Max chip available, including one with a 10-core CPU and a 24-core GPU and another with a 10-core CPU and a 32-core GPU. Pricing starts at $3,099 for this level of performance. The new MacBook Pro models will begin arriving to customers on Tuesday, October 26.

M1 Max offers up to 181% faster graphics than previous 16-inch MacBook Pro

Apple this week unveiled the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro, which are powered by Apple Silicon M1 Pro and M1 Max chips. An early benchmark already revealed that the M1 Max CPU delivers twice the performance of the M1 chip, and now a Metal score from Geekbench 5 shows that the M1 Max offers up to 181% faster graphics than the GPUs found in the previous 16-inch MacBook Pro.

Another benchmark test run with the new MacBook Pro recently uploaded to the Geekbench website shows that the GPU of the M1 Max chip scored 68870 in the Geekbench 5 Metal test. According to the website, the score comes from the high-end version of the M1 Max chip with 64GB of RAM.

Another benchmark test performed with the new MacBook Pro shows that the GPU of the M1 Max chip scored 68870 in the Geekbench 5 Metal test. According to the website, the score comes from the high-end version of the M1 Max chip with 64GB of RAM.

When compared to the AMD Radeon Pro 5300M, which is the GPU found in the base model of the previous 16-inch MacBook Pro with Intel processor, the M1 Max chip has 181% faster graphics, as the AMD 5300M scores only 24461 in Geekbench 5. Even compared to the best GPU available for the previous model (which is AMD Radeon Pro 5600M), M1 Max still has 62% more powerful graphics.

This score puts the new MacBook Pro with M1 Max chip on par with the now-discontinued iMac Pro, which had a model equipped with the AMD Radeon Pro Vega 56 GPU.

While the M1 Pro chip is available with 14-core and 16-core GPU, the M1 Max chip has a 32-core GPU with unified memory, which means it shares the same 32 or 64GB of RAM for graphics. Apple points out that the memory bandwidth speed reaches 400GB/s. This, of course, makes the new MacBook Pro more than ideal for graphics-intensive tasks.

The new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro are now available for pre-order, with the first units expected to ship next week.

Apple 16-inch MacBook Pro’s 140-watt USB-C charger is its most powerful yet

Apple MacBook Pro

Apple boasted about how efficient its new MacBook Pro laptops are during their debut Monday, but it takes Apple’s most power-hungry laptop charger, a beefy 140-watt brick, to top up the biggest of the new laptops.

Apple’s previous 16-inch MacBook Pros, which use the Intel processors Apple is kicking out of its Mac family, came with a 96-watt charger. The 140-watt charger, which ships only with the 16-inch MacBook Pro, can deliver power into either the laptop’s USB-C ports or its resurrected MagSafe charging port depending on which cable you attach to the charger’s USB-C port.

“MagSafe 3 has a new design that supports more power into the system,” said Mac product line manager Shruti Haldea during the launch event. The high-power charging works also with the laptop’s USB-C ports, too, thanks to a new standard this year that boosts USB charging power as high as 240 watts.

Supporting the new USB-C standard is important for anyone who wants to use Apple’s charger on other devices or third-party chargers on Apple’s new MacBook Pros.

The 16-inch MacBook Pro has the same 100-watt-hour battery size as its predecessor, but it includes fast-charge technology so customers can inject more power with a quick trip to the charger. The 14-inch MacBook Pro, available in configurations with smaller 67-watt and 96-watt chargers, has a 70-watt-hout battery that’s about 20% larger than the Intel-based model it replaces.

The high-power charger didn’t surprise Benson Leung, a Google engineer who’s worked on USB-C technology, including tracking down early problems. “Apple was instrumental at proposing the…new voltages levels to USB’s working groups, so it would make sense that they were planning on releasing the first implementation,” he said in a Reddit post Monday.

The rapid support for the new high-power USB is parallel to the early adoption of USB-C in 2016 by Apple and Google, he added. Both companies were able to support the new technology rapidly because they helped set the standards, Leung added.

Apple’s new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro laptops are powered by its own M1 Pro and M1 Max processors. At its MacBook Pro launch event, Apple also announced its AirPods 3 and more colorful HomePod Mini smart speakers.

USB has amplified its clout in the tech industry by expanding from data transfer duties to charging, first with phones and other small devices, and more recently with laptops. That’s been a boon for consumers, who can use the same charging equipment to top up batteries in laptops, headphones, tablets, phones, game consoles and other products.

One area that’s been out of reach for USB has been higher-end laptops for gaming, which need more than the 100-watt maximum USB has been able to supply. To address this, the USB Implementers Forum standards group expanded USB charging with several new levels up to 240-watt charging levels this year.

The USB-IF’s Power Delivery standard governs power levels so a high-power charger won’t damage a low-power device.

Apple sells its 140W charger separately for $99 but includes no charging cables with it.

New 16-Inch MacBook Pro is Thicker and Heavier Than Previous Generation

Apple today announced completely redesigned 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models that in the case of the 16-inch model is unsurprisingly thicker and heavier than the previous generation.

Apple announced a new 14-inch model that replaced the high-end Intel 13-inch MacBook Pros. Given the larger screen, it’s not fair to compare the two models. What is fair game, however, is to take a look at the new 16-inch MacBook Pro compared to the previous generation. We’ve put side by side the weight, height, and depth differences for the new 16-inch MacBook Pro compared to the previous generation.

2021 16-inch MacBook Pro
  • Weight: 4.7 pounds (2.1 kg)
  • Height: 0.66 inches (1.68 cm)
  • Depth: 9.77 inches (24.81 cm)
  • Width: 14.01 inches (35.37 cm)

2019 16-inch MacBook Pro
  • Weight: 4.3 pounds (2.0 kg)
  • Height: 0.64 inches (1.62 cm)
  • Depth: 9.68 inches (24.59 cm)
  • Width: 14.09 inches (35.79 cm)

As you can see from above, the new 16-inch MacBook Pro is nearly 9% heavier than the previous generation and is also slightly thicker. The new MacBook Pros feature a redesigned designed body, that is not also thicker and heavier, but also includes more I/O ports and new features. Learn more about these new MacBook Pros here.
