Kevin McCarthy Elected House Speaker, Finally, on 15th Vote – Rolling Stone

After days of public humiliation, and a chaotic 14th loss, Republican Kevin McCarthy has finally been elected Speaker of the House of Representatives on the 15th vote.

Just past Friday midnight, the Bakersfield, California, congressman at last secured the votes necessary to take hold of the gavel, following a grueling series of failed ballots that saw a gang of nearly 20 Republicans repeatedly lock arms against the longtime House GOP leader.

The impasse began to break on Friday morning. McCarthy held a call with Republicans, proclaiming he and the party were in a “good position.” The subsequent 12th ballot saw 14 members who had previously opposed him cast roll call votes for McCarthy. Yet another, Rep. Andy Harris (R-Md.), joined during the 13th ballot, after which the House adjourned. “I’ll have the votes,” McCarthy predicted to CNN about the vote Friday night.

McCarthy was still off by one. Despite “Never Kevin” leaders Matt Gaetz and Lauren Boehbert voting “present,” instead of in opposition, McCarthy still could not muster more than half of the votes on the 14th roll call. A tumultuous face-to-face confrontation between Gaetz and McCarthy on the House floor failed to change the tally, and McCarthy instead headed to a 15th round of voting.

Then, on the 15th try, the anti-McCarthy bloc yielded together, with six members voting “present” instead of in opposition, lowering the win threshold, and allowing McCarthy to squeak through with bare majority of 216 votes.

The opposition to McCarthy’s speakership was centered in the far-right Freedom Caucus, with members bashing McCarthy as a lobbyist-beholden, bad-faith negotiator who would never accede to its populist ultra-MAGA demands. Some of the opposition was ideological; at least rhetorically, the Freedom Caucus advocates financial austerity and members see McCarthy as too free-spending. For others the conflict seemed far more personal, as with the case of Never-Kevin ringleader Matt Gaetz.

The hard-line Freedom Caucus has long wielded political power beyond its modest numbers by withholding backing on party-line votes essential to conducting business in the House, and grinding business to a halt. The vote for speaker is normally a routine display of party unity. McCarthy was nominated as speaker-designate by his party at the end of 2022 by an overwhelming margin within the House GOP conference. But to secure the gavel, McCarthy needed an absolute majority of House members to vote for him. With 214 Democrats all voting in unison for their new leader, New York Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, McCarthy could suffer no more than four GOP defections, given the slim margin voters afforded the Republicans during the 2022 “red ripple” midterm elections.

Using the Freedom Caucus’ favorite obstructionist tactic, 19 GOP members withheld party-line support from McCarthy on the first ballot on Tuesday. It was the first time in 100 years that a speaker had not been elected on the first ballot. The second ballot also failed, and by the third the number of anti-McCarthy Republicans had climbed to 20. Former President Donald Trump tried to publicly rally support for McCarthy on Wednesday, but it had no effect. The number of Republicans who declined to vote for him rose to 21 on the three votes held later that day.

Attempting to shore up support, McCarthy agreed to a series of major concessions Wednesday night, but that didn’t make any difference, either. He lost all four votes held Thursday, gaining no ground. Each loss made McCarthy’s embarrassment more historic, with the congressman ultimately losing more speaker votes than in any contest since before the Civil War.

Negotiations intensified, with the GOP leader ceding even more authority to the hostage takers in his caucus. McCarthy reportedly conceded to demands that would allow any single GOP House member to trigger a new vote for McCarthy to be stripped of his gavel. McCarthy also promised floor votes on key issues, including term limits for House members. The new speaker is also said to have committed that there will be no “clean” vote to raise the federal debt ceiling later this year.

For McCarthy, 57, winning Friday night’s vote marks the end of a near decade-long quest to become speaker. The Californian was next-in line to assume the post in 2015 when the Freedom Caucus successfully ousted then-speaker John Boehner. But McCarthy withdrew his candidacy at the last moment in the wake of a gaffe, in which he admitted the true purpose of the Benghazi investigation was to bring down Hillary Clinton’s poll numbers, and amid rumors of a personal indiscretion. After playing second fiddle to eventual speaker Paul Ryan, and riding out the tumult of the Trump era, McCarthy again put himself in position to secure the gavel to start the 118th Congress.

In the runup to the 2022 elections, McCarthy hardly cloaked his ambition, infamously “joking” about an imagined transfer of power: “I want you to watch Nancy Pelosi hand me that gavel,” he told a GOP audience in Tennessee in 2021. “It’ll be hard not to hit her with it.” And even before this week’s protracted election drama, McCarthy took the presumptive step of moving into the speaker’s House chambers.

McCarthy may finally be Speaker but the chaos that preceded his election is a danger sign for the nation moving forward, shutting down the business of the House for days, in a prelude to what’s almost certain to become a full-fledged government shutdown during this congress.

McCarthy at last has his gavel, but the Freedom Caucus has McCarthy by the short hairs. This far right faction are now in position to demand that the Speaker join them in their hostage taking. Votes over funding the federal government or raising the debt ceiling are likely to degenerate into high-stakes games of chicken, with the GOP demanding that extremist priorities be met — or the full-faith-and-credit of the United States government suffers the consequences.

The speakership election may have been a clown show, but it could pale in comparison to the coming two years of tension as the GOP casts aside any concern for the welfare of the American people to embark on a series of standoffs with the Biden administration, and bogus, Benghazi-style investigations of their political enemies. And even after giving up the farm to his Freedom Caucus frenemies, McCarthy’s tenure as speaker could be nasty, brutish and short. As a Freedom Caucus founder, retired Arizona Rep. Matt Salmon, put it to Rolling Stone: “They can totally undo him.”

SpaceX launches 54 more Starlinks with a booster making its record-setting 15th flight

SpaceX launched its third Falcon 9 rocket in less than two days Saturday, sending 54 Starlink internet satellites into orbit using a recycled first-stage booster which was making its record 15th flight. It was also the California rocket builder’s 59th launch so far this year, nearly doubling its 2021 record.

Coated with soot from 14 previous re-entries, the veteran first stage’s nine Merlin engines ignited with a roar at 4:32 p.m. EST, smoothly pushing the 229-foot-tall rocket away from historic pad 39A at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

The launch followed a California flight Friday that put a $1.2 billion ocean-monitoring satellite into orbit, and a Falcon 9 flight from Florida Friday afternoon that sent two SES medium-altitude broadband satellites into space.

The Starlink launch had been planned for Friday as well, but SpaceX delayed it to Saturday to “prioritize” the SES launch.

In any case, first stage B1058, which first flew in May 2020 — helping boost the first piloted Crew Dragon ferry ship into space — chalked up another problem free-climb out of the dense lower atmosphere Saturday.

Two-and-a-half minutes after launch, the stage fell away and flew itself to touchdown on an off-shore landing barge. It was SpaceX’s 124th droneship landing, and its 158th successful recovery overall.

Booster B1058 sticks its 15th re-entry and landing, this one on an off-shore droneship, setting a new record for SpaceX.

The Falcon 9 second stage, meanwhile, completed its climb to space within seconds of the booster landing. The 54 Starlink satellites were released in a batch, pushing the total number of Starlink satellites launched to date by SpaceX to 3,612, as SpaceX continues to populate its globe-spanning constellation of laser-linked broadband relay stations.

Not all of the satellites are still operational or in orbit, but space statistician Jonathan McDowell estimates 3,230 were operational going into Saturday’s flight.

SpaceX launched 31 Falcon 9s in 2021. Two more launches are expected this year: another Starlink flight from Cape Canaveral, and the launch of an Israeli Earth-observation satellite from Vandenberg Space Force Base in Southern California. Those will push SpaceX’s total to 61 launches in 2022.

SpaceX booster to launch for record 15th time on Starlink mission – Spaceflight Now

SpaceX plans to launch 54 more Starlink internet satellites Saturday from Kennedy Space Center in Florida, using a Falcon 9 booster making its 15th flight to space, a record for the company’s reusable rocket fleet.

Liftoff of the 229-foot-tall (70-meter) Falcon 9 is set for 4:32 p.m. EST (2132 GMT) Saturday from Launch Complex 39A. SpaceX is going for its third Falcon 9 launch in less than 34 hours, following missions Friday from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station — just a few miles from pad 39A — and Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.

Those flights deployed the U.S.-French SWOT satellite, designed to survey Earth’s surface water resources, and two commercial broadband satellites for SES’s O3b mPOWER constellation.

SpaceX delayed the Starlink launch, designated Starlink 4-37, from Friday to focus on the O3b mPOWER mission for SES, one of SpaceX’s oldest customers.

There’s a 60% chance of favorable weather for the launch Saturday, with isolated rain showers and broken cloud layers predicted over Florida’s Space Coast, according to the U.S. Space Force’s 45th Weather Squadron. SpaceX has a backup launch opportunity available at 4:52 p.m., 20 minutes after the first launch time.

The Falcon 9 will arc northeast from Florida’s Space Coast, aiming for a low Earth orbit inclined 53.2 degrees to the equator. The rocket’s upper stage will release the 54 flat-packed Starlink satellites about 15 minutes into the mission.

The satellites on-board the Falcon 9 will add to SpaceX’s consumer-grade, high-speed, low-latency internet network. Subscribers can currently connect to the Starlink network in more than 40 countries and territories.

The first stage booster on the Starlink 4-37 mission will set a record for SpaceX’s reusable rockets. The booster stage, tail number B1058, debuted May 30, 2020, with the historic launch of NASA astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken on SpaceX’s first human spaceflight mission.

It’s flown 14 times so far, helping deliver 723 satellites into orbit. That tally will increase to 777 spacecraft with the launch of 54 more Starlink internet satellites Saturday.

The missions flown by B1058 have included the launch of a South Korean military communications satellite, a space station cargo mission, two Transporter small satellite rideshare missions, and nine flights with Starlink satellites.

The launch Saturday will be SpaceX’s first Starlink mission since Oct. 27. Since then, SpaceX has launched nine consecutive missions for commercial and U.S. government customers.

After Saturday’s mission, SpaceX will have launched 3,612 Starlink satellites into orbit, including prototypes and failed spacecraft. The company currently has more than 3,200 functioning Starlink satellites in space, with about 3,000 operational and nearly 200 moving into their operational orbits, according to a tabulation by Jonathan McDowell, an expert tracker of spaceflight activity and an astronomer at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.

The 53 new Starlink satellites will launch into one of five orbital “shells” in SpaceX’s internet constellation.

SpaceX will Shell 4 with Saturday’s mission. The network architecture includes satellites flying a few hundred miles up, orbiting at inclinations of 97.6 degrees, 70 degrees, 53.2 degrees, and 53.0 degrees to the equator. The spacecraft beam broadband internet signals to consumers around the world, connectivity that is now available on all seven continents with testing underway at a research station in Antarctica.

SpaceX is more than halfway complete with deploying the initial fleet of 4,400 Starlink internet satellites. The company has approval from the Federal Communications Commission to eventually launch and operate up to 12,000 Starlink spacecraft, and SpaceX has signaled it could aim to fly as many as 42,000 Starlink satellites in orbit.

SpaceX is developing an upgraded, much larger Starlink satellite design sized to launch on the company’s huge next-generation Starship rocket. But the Starship has not yet attempted a launch into low Earth orbit, and delays in developing and testing the new rocket will likely force SpaceX to start launching a smaller version of the new Starlink satellite design on Falcon 9 rockets.

The Starlink network was conceived as a venture to help draw in revenue to fund SpaceX’s ambition to build a base on Mars. The Starship rocket itself, designed to be fully reusable with relatively low operating costs, is central to Elon Musk’s Mars dream.

The launch Saturday will be SpaceX’s 59th launch so far in 2022. Two more Falcon 9 rockets are scheduled to fly before the end of the year, one from Florida and one from California.

The higher launch rate has been aided by shorter turnarounds between missions at launch pads in Florida and California, and SpaceX’s reuse of Falcon 9 boosters and payload fairings. Launches carrying satellites for SpaceX’s own Starlink internet network, like the mission Saturday, have accounted for more than half of the company’s Falcon 9 flights so far this year.

Stationed inside a launch control center just south of Cape Canaveral Space Force Station for Saturday’s countdown, SpaceX’s launch team will begin loading super-chilled, densified kerosene and liquid oxygen propellants into the Falcon 9 vehicle at T-minus 35 minutes.

Helium pressurant will also flow into the rocket in the last half-hour of the countdown. In the final seven minutes before liftoff, the Falcon 9’s Merlin main engines will be thermally conditioned for flight through a procedure known as “chilldown.” The Falcon 9’s guidance and range safety systems will also be configured for launch.

After liftoff, the Falcon 9 rocket will vector its 1.7 million pounds of thrust — produced by nine Merlin engines — to steer northeast over the Atlantic Ocean.

The rocket will exceed the speed of sound in about one minute, then shut down its nine main engines two-and-a-half minutes after liftoff. The booster stage will release from the Falcon 9’s upper stage, then fire pulses from cold gas control thrusters and extend titanium grid fins to help steer the vehicle back into the atmosphere.

Two braking burns will slow the rocket for landing on the drone ship “Just Read the Instructions” around 400 miles (650 kilometers) downrange approximately nine minutes after liftoff.

The Falcon 9’s reusable payload fairing will jettison during the second stage burn. A recovery ship is also on station in the Atlantic to retrieve the two halves of the nose cone after they splash down under parachutes.

Landing of the first stage on Saturday’s mission will occur moments after the Falcon 9’s second stage engine cuts off to deliver the Starlink satellites into orbit. Separation of the 54 Starlink spacecraft, built by SpaceX in Redmond, Washington, from the Falcon 9 rocket was confirmed at T+plus 15 minutes, 22 seconds.

Retention rods will release from the Starlink payload stack, allowing the flat-packed satellites to fly free from the Falcon 9’s upper stage in orbit. The 54 spacecraft will unfurl solar arrays and run through automated activation steps, then use krypton-fueled ion engines to maneuver into their operational orbit.

The Falcon 9’s guidance computer aims deploy the satellites into an elliptical orbit at an inclination of 53.2 degrees to the equator. The satellites will use on-board propulsion to do the rest of the work to reach a circular orbit 335 miles (540 kilometers) above Earth.

After reaching their operational orbit, the satellites will enter commercial service and begin beaming broadband signals to consumers, who can purchase Starlink service and connect to the network with a SpaceX-supplied ground terminal.

SpaceX rocket launches on record 15th mission, lands at sea

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launched for an unprecedented 15th time on Saturday (Dec. 17), extending the company’s reusability record.

A Falcon 9 topped with 54 of SpaceX’s Starlink internet satellites lifted off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida Saturday at 4:32 p.m. ET (2132 GMT). 

The rocket’s first stage came back to Earth just under nine minutes later, landing on a SpaceX robotic droneship, which was stationed in the Atlantic Ocean off the Florida coast.

“Falcon 9’s first stage has landed on the Just Read the Instructions droneship, completing the 15th launch and landing of this booster!” SpaceX tweeted (opens in new tab) just after the touchdown.

The rocket’s upper stage continued hauling the 54 Starlink craft to low Earth orbit, deploying them all about 15.5 minutes after launch as planned, SpaceX confirmed via Twitter (opens in new tab).

Starlink is SpaceX’s huge and ever-growing constellation of broadband satellites, which beam internet service to people around the world. 

The company has already launched more than 3,500 Starlink spacecraft to date and intends to loft many more. SpaceX applied for permission from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to deploy nearly 30,000 of its next-generation Starlink 2.0 satellites, which the company aims to loft primarily using its Starship deep-space transportation system. The FAA recently granted approval for 7,500 of those spacecraft but is reserving judgment on the rest.

Saturday’s launch was the third in two days for SpaceX. On Friday (Dec. 16), a Falcon 9 launched the SWOT water-watching satellite for NASA from California’s Vandenberg Space Force Base, and another lofted two satellites for European telecom company SES from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.

MultiVersus season 1 kicks off August 15th after a short delay

The first season of MultiVersus, Warner Bros.’ free-to-play take on a Super Smash Bros.-esque crossover fighter, will now begin on August 15th, developer Player First Games tweeted Thursday evening. The season had been scheduled to kick off on August 9th, but the studio announced last week that the launch had been delayed.

Alongside the news of the season start date, Player First Games announced that Morty from Rick and Morty will be joining the MultiVersus roster on August 23rd; his arrival had been pushed back last week as well. Player First Games also committed to adding “new modes and content” over the course of the season. Ahead of the season 1 delay, the Rick half of Rick and Morty was planned to be added sometime during the season, but it’s unclear if that’s still the case.

MultiVersus launched in open beta in July. Rick and Morty will join an already packed roster that includes characters like Bugs Bunny, Harley Quinn, Arya Stark, the Iron Giant, and LeBron James. The game is available on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.

You would think that AMD would beat MSI to reveal the release date of their product, but instead, the latter revealed the launch of the Ryzen 7000 CPU series and its X670 motherboard series at once, falling mid-September, and both indicating the same day.

MSI plans to release four X670 motherboards initially for the AMD Ryzen 7000 Desktop CPU family which would include the MEG X670E GODLIKE, MEG X670E Ace, MPG X670E Carbon WiFI & the PRO X670E-P WIFI. We will be getting more information such as prices, overclocking, and memory DDR5 support closer to the launch. The company will also have a range of B650 chipset motherboards to showcase but they aren’t planned for launch until a bit slightly later.

Yesterday at the AMD “Meet The Experts” Livestream, MSI gave a bit more insight into their X670E motherboards. U.S. to send 15th military package to Ukraine, bringing total aid in Russia war to $7 billion

WASHINGTON — The Biden administration is set to send its 15th security assistance package to Ukraine, bringing the tally of U.S. military and humanitarian aid to more than $7 billion since Russia invaded Ukraine in late February.

A senior U.S. Defense official, who spoke on condition of anonymity in order to share details of the additional security assistance, said the $400 million weapons package was coordinated with Ukrainian officials and is tailored to the wider Russian assault in eastern Ukraine.

Heavy artillery platforms, like howitzers and High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, or HIMARS, sit high on Ukrainian military wish lists.

The official said the latest security package will include four additional HIMARS, which brings the total number of HIMARS transfers to Ukraine from U.S. arsenals to 12.

The HIMARS, manufactured by defense giant Lockheed Martin, are designed to shoot a variety of missiles from a mobile 5-ton truck. The official said that U.S. troops will keep training Ukrainian forces on how to use the platform at a location outside the country.

“We will continue to train them because we see this as a sustained battle,” the official said, adding that HIMARS training takes approximately a week to complete.

The official declined to elaborate when pressed by reporters on how many Ukrainian troops have so far completed training on the HIMARS platform.

The person added that the latest security assistance will be a mixture of systems already deployed to the fight as well as new capabilities.

The official said that the latest tranche of weapons will include additional ammunition for HIMARS, 155 mm howitzers and rounds of ammunition for the howitzers.
