14-year-old girl charged with murder in the shooting of 11-year-old boy in Dallas

CNN
 —

A 14-year-old girl was charged with murder Monday following the fatal shooting of an 11-year-old boy who was hit by a stray bullet, according to Dallas police.

Police were called to a report of a shooting at an apartment complex in south Dallas on Sunday afternoon at about 2 p.m. As part of the investigation, police determined a fight was going on between two girls in the parking lot of the complex.

“One juvenile suspect retrieved a handgun and shot in the direction of the female she was fighting; however, the shot struck a male juvenile bystander,” police said in a statement.

The 11-year-old boy was transported to the hospital where he died from his injuries, police said.

The suspect initially ran from the location but was later taken into custody and charged, and she remains at the Henry Wade Juvenile Justice Center, police said. A weapon was recovered during the investigation, the agency added.

Police are not releasing the names of those involved in the incident due to their ages.

Vashunte Settles identified the boy as her son De’Evan McFall and said he died in front of her, according to CNN affiliate KTVT.

“Me having to witness it and be there … I’m never gonna get over it,” she told the affiliate.

Settles said her daughter was fighting with a 14-year-old girl who then pulled out a gun and shot the fatal bullet, missing her but hitting De’Evan.

“He was so innocent. He definitely didn’t deserve it,” Settles said. “I just wish the younger generation would stop and think before they do irrational things, because in this situation, I’m not the only one hurting.”

Settles said she will miss De’Evan’s big smile and his love of sports.

“Take this story and do something productive with it. Let my son not have died in vain and let this save somebody else’s child,” she said.

De’Evan was a fifth grader with the DeSoto Independent School District, according to a statement from the district. He was “described as sweet and charismatic by his teachers and will be greatly missed by both his teachers and peers,” the statement said.

“Losing a student is one of the most difficult experiences one can have as an educator, it is akin to losing a child as these are our children,” DeSoto ISD Superintendent of Schools Usamah Rodgers said. “My heart and condolences go out to the McFall family. DeSoto ISD will continue to wrap its arms around the family of De’Evan McFall as well as his school family and our entire district.”

North Carolina family of unvaccinated 14-year-old search for a medical center for kidney transplant

A North Carolina family is appealing for help after their adopted 14-year-old daughter was refused a kidney transplant by Duke University hospital because she was not vaccinated against COVID-19.

Yulia Hicks was taken in by Lee and Chrissy Hicks in January 2021 from Ukraine. They knew she had a rare genetic kidney condition, Senior Loken Syndrome, which would eventually mean she required a transplant.

On November 11, however, they were told she was not eligible for Duke’s waiting list because she was not vaccinated against COVID.

‘There’s no sympathy whatsoever from any of them,’ said Chrissy Hicks.

‘It’s just strong arming us: give her the vaccine, and you’ll get the transplant.’

She said they had contacted a lawyer, but ‘can’t have her life hanging in the balance with litigation’ – and were seeking an alternative medical center.

The Hickses said Yulia had been infected previously, yet the hospital said that was not sufficient, and CDC guidelines require vaccinations for transplant patients.

‘They said the CDC recommendation had been updated at the end of October, and they had to go by the recommendation, and if she didn’t get the vaccine she wouldn’t be getting a transplant at Duke,’ said Chrissy Hicks, speaking to Tucker Carlson on Friday night.

Chrissy Hicks, mother of 14-year-old Yulia, appeared on Tucker Carlson’s Fox News show on Friday night to appeal for help

‘We’ve been dealing with these doctors from Duke for at least two years, because our dialysis goes through Duke as well,’ she explained.

‘We do it at home for Yulia.

‘But the two doctors who denied us because of the COVID vaccine, we saw them for an eight-hour workup, and that’s when they told us it was going to be required.

‘Then we kind of pushed back a little bit.

‘They put her in front of the committee on November 10th.

‘She was rejected solely because of the vaccine that’s when we decided to do a conference call and get actual evidence of them telling us this.’

Carlson called the hospital’s decision ‘obviously unreasonable and viciously cruel.’

Chrissy Hicks recorded the phone call, in which the hospital explained why Yulia was being denied the transplant.

‘I can’t require you to do anything,’ a woman says. ‘I can recommend these things.

‘But if you don’t follow our recommendations then Yulia can’t be a transplant candidate here.

‘Based on number five, which is persistent non-adherence to medical dialysis treatment or medical recommendations, and also based on number 10 – which is medical risk factors that make the surgery unsafe.

‘And being unvaccinated to the CDC recommended vaccinations, based on her age, is part of that.’

Yulia Hicks, left, is a 14-year-old rescued orphan from Ukraine. She has been denied a life-saving kidney transplant because her parents will not have her vaccinated

Yulia Hicks was adopted in January 2021 by Lee and Chrissy Hicks, joining their large family

When the Hickses, devout Roman Catholics who have 11 children – three of them adopted – argued that Yulia had already had COVID and so was protected, the hospital staff pushed back.

‘The virus has continued to mutate,’ a man tells them.

‘So the natural immunity is not as good as if you had natural immunity, plus vaccination.’

Chrissy Hicks told Carlson that the hospital staff were not sympathetic, and had not even expressed condolences at not being able to help Yulia.

The mother of 11 said they hoped that another medical center may agree to help Yulia

Carlson said it was ‘so evil, it’s hard to digest it.’

The North Carolina mother said they have retained a lawyer, but in the meantime are hoping ‘that a medical center will come forward and let us know they will perform the transplant without the vaccine.’

‘We have retained a lawyer. Mike Yoder is his name,’ she said.

‘We can’t have her life hanging in the balance with litigation.

‘So we’re hoping that going on your show will give us exposure that a medical center will come forward and let us know they will perform the transplant without the vaccine.

‘We would love for them to reach out to us.

‘We’ve created a website, yuliagrace.com, contact us there, if there’s medical center that will help us.

‘We’ve also created – we have 11 children in our family. We aren’t financially able to go out of state to do this. Go to giftsendgo.com.

‘We’ve had an outpouring of help already. We are so grateful for people who have stepped forward,’ she said.

‘This comes down to: this is bigger than Yulia, so many families in the situation as Yulia, and we want to help other families.

‘There’s been a line drawn in the sand.

‘If we don’t stand up now for our medical freedoms, we don’t won’t be able to stand up soon.’

Yulia’s case is not isolated.

Earlier this year, a 31-year-old Boston man, DJ Ferguson, was denied a heart transplant because he refused to be vaccinated against COVID.

Several weeks later a North Carolina man, Chad Carswell, 38, said he would rather die than be forced to get the COVID jab to receive the kidney transplant he needed.

Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, the hospital where Carswell was hoping to receive his transplant, declined to comment on his case but a spokeswoman said the hospital’s vaccine policy is meant to protect transplant patients, who are at high risk for severe illness from COVID.

Last year, both Cleveland Clinic and University of Colorado hospitals refused to perform organ transplants for recipients who hadn’t been vaccinated.

Individual centers establish their own policies, but there are some common practices. Hospitals will typically require transplant candidates to abstain from smoking, and transplant recipients generally have to go through psychosocial evaluations.

They often have to be vaccinated against hepatitis B, commit to getting annual flu shots, and show they’re immune to measles.

14-year-old girl dies after knife attack near Ulm – DW – 12/05/2022

Police in southern Germany have confirmed that a 14-year-old girl was killed and a 13-year-old suffered serious injuries Monday morning after being attacked on the street on their way to school in the village of Illerkirchberg.

The two girls were attacked around 7:30 a.m. local time by a man reportedly wielding a knife.

Investigators confirmed that early indications were that they were stabbed.

“The 14-year-old had to be reanimated at the scene before she could be taken to the hospital, where, despite all efforts to save her life, she died,” police said.

The other girl remains hospitalized with serious but not life-threatening injuries, they added.

Information released about suspect

Police and prosecutors late Monday said the main suspect was a 27-year-old Eritrean asylum seeker.

Authorities said the man, who is currently hospitalized and under police custody, fled into an asylum shelter after the attack.

“When police and SWAT teams searched the premises they encountered three residents, all Eritrean asylum seekers,” authorities said in a statement.

Police said the man had been in the home before the attack and that he had a knife — believed to be the weapon used in the attack — on him when he was arrested.

The other two men in the shelter were taken in for questioning.

Earlier in the day, police told reporters they intended to conduct “a thorough background investigation,” by evening, a spokesperson said it was already “running at top speed.”

No motive has yet been announced.

The police statement stressed that while such an event could spark fear and emotion, authorities asked that “no general suspicion be harbored against foreigners, refugees or asylum-seekers in general, or that such suspicions be aided or abetted.”

German federal, state and local officials decry ‘horrible’ incident

Local police say the operation, which was carried out with the assistance of a SWAT team, has now ended and there is no longer a threat to the public.

Mayor Markus Häussler, who was at the crime scene all morning, called the situation “horrible” when speaking with the regional Südwest Presse newspaper.

Häussler said Illerkirchberg — a picturesque baroque village of 5,000 situated south of Ulm at the Baden-Württemberg/Bavaria border halfway between Stuttgart and Munich — is “in a state of shock.”

Later in the evening, German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) took to Twitter, writing, “I mourn the murdered child and hope with all my heart that the injured girl will return to health.” Faeser said her thoughts and prayers were with the families of the two girls.

Baden-Württemberg state Interior Minister Thomas Strobl lamented that the 14-year-old had been “suddenly torn from life.” Strobl, too, offered words of support and condolence to the families and friends of the young girls.

After wishing a full recovery to the surviving girl, the politician promised to get to the bottom of exactly what happened and why.

Dwayne Johnson buys every Snickers at Hawaii 7-Eleven to ‘right this wrong’ of candy thefts as 14-year-old

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson joked this week he had finally “exorcised this damn chocolate demon” after he returned to the Hawaii 7-Eleven — where he claimed he used to steal a Snickers “every day” as a 14-year-old – and bought out all of the nougat bars.

The “Black Adam” star explained in an Instagram post that his family was “broke as hell” when he was living on the island and for nearly a year when he was 14, he would swipe a Snickers from the store as his pre-workout snack.

The actor and former wrester known as “The Rock” said his family was “evicted from Hawaii” in 1987, and he had wanted to return to “right this wrong” for decades.

In a video posted to Instagram, the 50-year-old had a clerk ring up all of the store’s Snickers, leaving them on the counter and telling him to give the Snickers to any customers who look like they’re going to steal one.

He also tipped the clerk who had the task of counting the dozens of bars.

Additionally, he paid for all of the customers’ groceries while he was in the 7-Eleven, reaching a bill of $298.

He wrote that he realized the deed might seem “silly” to some, but Johnson noted that every time he has returned to Hawaii and gone by the 7-Eleven, he “always knew” that he “needed to go in and clean out every Snickers bar they had – the right way.”

“And as a bonus it was a lot of fun to take care of everybody who walked into 7-11 while I was there. Least I could do considering all the s— I used to steal from here,” he added.

Johnson continued: “We can’t change the past and some of the dumb stuff we may have done, but every once in a while we can add a little redeeming grace note to that situation — and maybe put a big smile on some stranger’s faces.”

French cardinal says he abused 14-year-old girl 35 years ago

PARIS (AP) — Cardinal Jean-Pierre Ricard, one of France’s highest-ranking prelates of the Catholic Church, said Monday that he had abused a 14-year-old girl 35 years ago and is withdrawing from his religious duties.

The move comes after a report issued last year revealed a large number of child sex abuse cases within the French Catholic Church.

“Thirty-five years ago, when I was a priest, I behaved in a reprehensible way with a young girl aged 14,” Ricard said in a written statement.

“My behavior has inevitably caused serious and lasting consequences for this person,” he said.

Ricard, 78, used to be the archbishop of Bordeaux, in southwestern France, until he retired from that position in 2019 to serve in his home diocese of Dignes-les-Bains, in the south of the country. In the 1980s, he was a priest in the archdiocese of Marseille.

The announcement was made Monday at a news conference by the president of the French bishops’ conference, Archbishop Éric de Moulins-Beaufort.

Moulins-Beaufort said a total of 11 bishops and former bishops, including Ricard, have been targeted by accusations in relation with sex abuse in diverse cases investigated by French justice or church authorities.

Ricard said he had talked to the victim and asked her for forgiveness, without specifying when. He said he was also asking for forgiveness “to all those I hurt” through his statement. He did not elaborate on that.

At times when the French Catholic Church has just started to pay financial compensation to victims of child sexual abuse, Ricard said he decided “not to stay silent anymore about (his) situation” and that he was available for the country’s justice and for church authorities.

The broad study released last year by an independent commission estimated that some 330,000 children were sexually abused over 70 years by priests or other church-related figures in France.

The tally included an estimated 216,000 people abused by priests and other clerics, and the rest by church figures such as scout leaders and camp counselors. The estimates were based on broader research by France’s National Institute of Health and Medical Research into sexual abuse of children.

The report described a “systemic” coverup by church officials and urged the French Catholic Church to respect the rule of law in France.

14-year-old charged with murder in killing of Philadelphia employee at playground

CNN
 —

A 14-year-old boy has been charged with murder in connection with the shooting death of a woman at the Philadelphia playground where she worked, city officials confirm.

The teenager was charged with murder and other offenses related to the Friday shooting of Parks and Recreation employee Tiffany Fletcher at the Mill Creek Recreation Center in West Philadelphia, Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said.

Fletcher, 40, was “caught in the crossfire” of a shootout with the 14-year-old and at least one other individual, police said.

District Attorney Larry Krasner confirmed that the teenager is being charged as an adult, but officials did not disclose his name during a news conference on Monday.

CNN has reached out to the Defender Association of Philadelphia to determine whether they are representing the teenager.

Outlaw said officers heard multiple gunshots on Friday around 1:30 p.m. in the area of the recreation center and saw people running from the playground when they responded to the scene.

After she was shot, Fletcher ran to an area business where workers attempted to tend to her wounds. Officers transported Fletcher to a nearby hospital, but she died later that evening, Outlaw said.

The 14-year-old boy was arrested after a brief chase, and a 9mm “ghost gun” was recovered in a nearby trash can, Outlaw said.

Authorities also found 12 fired shell casings at the scene. It’s still unknown what led to the shootout and authorities are still searching for other suspects involved.

Fletcher agreed in the spring to work as a pool maintenance attendant when the city, like many others, was facing a shortage of staff at its pools, and agreed to stay on at Mill Creek Recreation Center after the pool season ended, according to Parks and Recreation Commissioner Kathryn Ott Lovell, who called Fletcher “a beloved member of the staff.”

“Tiffany answered the call each day to serve children and families in her community and to make her three children and her family proud,” Ott Lovell said.

The recreation center had just opened at 1 p.m. that day. Four other employees were present at the center when the shooting took place, according to Ott Lovell.

“Words alone cannot express the outrage, hurt, and sadness that all of us feel. Dedicated, passionate, and driven – Tiffany Fletcher was just doing her job outside Mill Creek Rec Center in West Philadelphia when – in a brazen and unconscionable act of violence – she was struck by crossfire in the middle of the day,” Mayor Jim Kenney said.

Jean Washington, Fletcher’s niece, called her aunt a “wonderful mother…aunt, sister, daughter.”

“I want justice for her children. They deserve their mom. For peace, we need justice,” Washington said.

Philadelphia has been experiencing an increase in gun violence, DA Krasner said. Last week, the city recorded 11 homicides from September 3-9, he said.

Additionally, there have been 384 recorded homicides this year in the city as of Sunday, marking an increase of 4% for the same time period last year, Krasner said.

“It’s extremely important that we understand that we’re dealing with an inexcusable, deeply disheartening, horrible level of gun violence within the city of Philadelphia that is increasingly affecting children,” Krasner said.

The city’s mayor also commented on the surge in violence, calling the recent number of incidents “outrageous” and “simply unacceptable.”

“It’s just unfathomable to think of how many lives were impacted by gun violence and my deepest sympathies go out to the loved ones of everyone affected,” Kenney said.

Kenney said the ongoing violence near recreation centers and schools was one of the reasons the city now offers a $10,000 reward for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of someone who fires a weapon within 500 feet of a school, recreation center or library.

“Our playgrounds, our parks, our rec centers should be safe and sacred places in our communities,” Ott Lovell said.
