Two Midwestern powers will meet in the unofficial capital of the region when No. 12 Notre Dame and No. 18 Wisconsin battle at Soldier Field in Chicago on Saturday. Both teams enter the game with question marks, though the Fighting Irish have yet to lose this season. Not that it hasn’t felt like they’ve tried.
After blowing a big lead against Florida State in the opener and surviving in overtime, Notre Dame nearly fell at home to Toledo a week later. Last week the Irish failed to separate themselves from Purdue, even if they were never in real danger of losing. Notre Dame will be facing Wisconsin as the Badgers come off a bye — a common theme of Notre Dame’s schedule in 2021. Wisconsin opened the season with a home loss to a Penn State team that has since climbed into the top five of the polls but rebounded with an easy victory over Eastern Michigan. While it isn’t a conference game, this is a chance for the Badgers to boost their resume at the end of the season against a team that’s reached the College Football Playoff twice in the last three seasons.
Notre Dame holds an 8-6-2 edge on Wisconsin in the series history, but this will be the first meeting between the programs since 1964. The Irish won that game 31-7.
