The Michigan football team currently doesn’t have a player sporting the No. 0 on its roster, but that could be changing by the Wolverines’ season-opener against Western Michigan.
In a photo shared to the team’s official facebook page, cornerbacks coach Steve Clinkscale can be seen coaching a player wearing the No. 0 uniform, one currently not occupied by anyone on Michigan’s listed roster. But a closer look at the photo shows on the player’s helmet the No. 13 decal and the 508 area code helmet sticker (Massachusetts). Given that Dennis is currently listed as No. 13 on Michigan’s roster and hails from Worcester, Massachusetts, it would appear to be him.
The No. 0 uniform was worn by Andre Seldon and Giles Jackson last season — the first year that the NCAA allowed the number.
Dennis, a former three-star recruit who finished No. 484 in the 2020 247Sports Composite rankings, switched from wide receiver to cornerback last summer and did not see any game action in the fall. Still, Dennis is believed to be among the team’s fastest players, and was listed by special teams coordinator Jay Harbaugh last week as a candidate in Michigan’s return game.
“It’s about more than just the guy back there. We have a lot of talented guys on our team right now who are dangerous with the ball in their hands,” Jay Harbaugh said, listing Blake Corum, A.J. Henning, Roman Wilson, Mike Barrett, Brad Hawkins and Eamonn Dennis. “It’s a full 11-person effort to be able to make that guy look really good.
“I like where we’re at, but the goal will obviously be to be explosive in that phase. It’s a pretty good-sized group, a little deeper than we have been in terms of guys who have the ability to field a ball and have some ball carrying skills.”
If he is in line to play on special teams, particularly in kickoff coverage, a switch from No. 13 would make sense, as he could not be on the field at the same time as kicker and fellow No. 13 Jake Moody.
Dennis received nine power-five offers as a recruit, and also sported a 40-inch vertical leap in high school.
