Mets rally to take finale, split series vs. Dodgers

LOS ANGELES — Make no mistake: the Mets want it known that they intend to challenge the Dodgers for National League supremacy all summer.

J.D. Davis’ RBI double in the 10th inning allowed the Mets to win, 5-4, at Dodger Stadium for the first time since 2007 when trailing in the eighth inning or later. It also gave the Mets a series split despite losing the first two games in dispiriting fashion.

Trailing for nearly all of Sunday’s finale, the Mets rallied to take the lead in the eighth on back-to-back doubles by Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso, a sacrifice fly by Eduardo Escobar and an RBI single from Tomás Nido. Manager Buck Showalter then turned to closer Edwin Díaz in the eighth rather than the ninth, because it allowed Díaz to face the Dodgers’ three best hitters — Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman and Trea Turner — instead of a lower-leverage situation in the ninth. Díaz did his job without issue, but the strategy backfired when Seth Lugo blew the save in the ninth.

Davis opened the 10th with his hit, and Adonis Medina recorded the save in the bottom of the inning.
