Blazers Bringing on Clippers Assistant Roy Rogers

The Portland Trail Blazers will add Los Angeles Clippers Assistant Coach Roy Rogers to their coaching staff, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. Rogers, who worked with new Blazers Head Coach Chauncey Billups as a member of the Clippers staff last season, is known for his defensive acumen.

Per Wojnarowski:

Portland is finalizing a deal for Clippers assistant Roy Rogers to join Chauncey Billups’ new coaching staff, sources tell ESPN. Rogers has shown an ability to help improved team defenses in recent stops, and will focus on that end for the Blazers.

Per an article from Forbes.com, Rogers was also instrumental in developing center Ivaca Zubac in Los Angeles:

Rogers helped with the development of the team’s centers, notably Zubac with his low-post footwork and finishing at the rim.

Rogers has served as an assistant and scout with the New Jersey/Brooklyn Nets, the Boston Celtics, the Washington Wizards, the Houston Rockets, and the Chicago Bulls in addition to the Clippers. He joined the L.A. bench in 2020 under head coach Tyronn Lue, the same time frame as Billups.

Earlier today Wojnarowski announced that the Blazers would hire former Washington Wizards coach Scott Brooks as Billups’ lead assistant.
