Wisconsin GOP fires election investigator who pushed false fraud claims

MADISON, Wis. — The Republican-led review of Wisconsin’s 2020 election abruptly ended Friday when the GOP Assembly speaker who launched the inquiry last summer fired the former state Supreme Court justice he had hired to lead it.

The firing came a week after Michael Gableman, who had led the investigation, joined former president Donald Trump in turning against Speaker Robin Vos amid the veteran Wisconsin politician’s effort to fend off a primary challenge from the right.

The haphazard, year-old inquiry was marked by meetings with conspiracy theorists, violations of the state’s public records laws and a call by Gableman to explore the legally impossible task of decertifying the election results. It did not uncover evidence of widespread fraud, though Trump and Gableman tried to suggest otherwise.

“After having many members of our caucus reach out to me over the past several days, it is beyond clear to me that we only have one choice in this matter, and that’s to close the Office of Special Counsel,” Vos said in a written statement.

Vos has had a tenuous relationship with Trump, who supported the Wisconsin review but repeatedly pressed Vos to go further with it. Last week, Trump and Gableman endorsed the longtime speaker’s Republican primary opponent, with the former president holding a rally urging voters to throw out Vos.

Vos won Tuesday’s primary against Adam Steen, but just barely, claiming 51 percent of the vote. Steen had called for decertifying the election and labeled Vos, one of the most powerful Republicans in Wisconsin, a traitor.

The firing marked the end of a saga that began in June 2021 when Vos, acting under pressure from Trump, announced at the state Republican Party’s annual convention that he had hired Gableman. The retired judge had earlier claimed without evidence that the election had been stolen.

Gableman took months to set up his office and spent the early stage of his review performing online research from a public library in suburban Milwaukee. He toured the site of a frequently criticized GOP-led ballot review in Arizona and attended a seminar in South Dakota hosted by Mike Lindell, the MyPillow chief executive who has spouted false claims about the 2020 election.

As he pursued his review, Gableman claimed to be acting in a nonpartisan manner while attending Republican Party events and calling for the resignation of a Republican state senator who had lambasted his review as a charade. Gableman criticized the way the nonpartisan director of the state’s elections commission dresses and monitored the social media posts of others. He or one of his aides drafted a memo speculating that a city employee in Milwaukee was a Democrat because she had a nose ring, liked snakes and lived with her boyfriend.

Gableman in March issued a report calling on lawmakers to consider revoking the state’s 10 electoral votes for Joe Biden, who beat Trump in Wisconsin by about 21,000 votes. Vos had long opposed that idea because election experts — including Gableman’s own attorney, James Bopp Jr. — have found there is no way to legally perform that task.

Gableman acknowledged his suggestion was a “practical impossibility” two weeks later in a private memo to Vos that came to light this month.

Vos forced Gableman to reimburse taxpayers for the cost of his travel to a partisan event but publicly tolerated much of Gableman’s approach to the review. That changed after Gableman endorsed Steen and cut a robocall saying Vos “never wanted a real investigation.”

Gableman went further in a Monday appearance on former Trump adviser Stephen K. Bannon’s podcast, contending Vos had a role in stealing the 2020 election. (Recounts and court rulings in Wisconsin have confirmed Biden’s win and independent reviews have found no signs of significant voter fraud.)

“[Vos] oversaw the implementation of all the odious apparatus that the Wisconsin Elections Commission put to use to steal the election from — and I’m not even going to say from a particular candidate. I’m going to say they stole it from the voters and the good citizens of the state of Wisconsin,” Gableman said.

Gableman said Vos was afraid he would take public criticism if he challenged the state’s election system more vigorously and claimed Vos had told him he wanted to play down election issues.

“What he told me was that he didn’t think the election integrity issue was going to be a successful political platform for either he or other Republicans to run on and therefore he wanted to minimize all discussion and all conduct on it before the [2022] election,” Gableman said.

With his probe, Gableman turned up little information that was new. The reports he wrote mostly reiterated the findings of conservative groups that criticized how the election was run during the coronavirus pandemic.

Vos initially gave Gableman a taxpayer-funded budget of $676,000, but Vos and Gableman quickly blew past it as their legal bills mounted. The two lost a series of rulings and were found in contempt of court after the liberal watchdog group American Oversight sued them under the state’s open-records law.

Vos telegraphed Gableman’s firing after eking out his primary win, telling reporters on Tuesday night, “He’s an embarrassment to the state.”

Vitamin D Supplementation Seems to Alleviate Depressive Symptoms in Adults

Summary: The findings of an extensive meta-analysis study reveal vitamin D supplementation may help to alleviate symptoms of depression.

Source: University of Eastern Finland

An extensive meta-analysis suggests that vitamin D supplementation may alleviate depressive symptoms in adults with depression. Conducted by an international team of researchers, the meta-analysis includes dozens of studies from around the world.

Depressive symptoms cause a significant disease burden worldwide. The therapeutic efficacy of current antidepressants is often insufficient, which is why further ways to alleviate the symptoms of depression have been sought, for example, from nutritional research.

Vitamin D is believed to regulate central nervous system functions the disturbances of which have been associated with depression. In addition, cross-sectional studies have observed an association between depressive symptoms and vitamin D deficiency.

However, previous meta-analyses on the effects of vitamin D supplementation on depression have been inconclusive. In a meta-analysis, results from several different studies are combined and analyzed statistically.

The new meta-analysis on the association of vitamin D supplementation with depression is the largest one published so far, including results from 41 studies from around the world.

These studies have investigated the efficacy of vitamin D in alleviating depressive symptoms in adults by randomized placebo-controlled trials in different populations.

The studies included those carried out in patients with depression, in the general population, and in people with various physical conditions.

The results of the meta-analysis show that vitamin D supplementation is more effective than a placebo in alleviating depressive symptoms in people with depression. There were major differences in the vitamin D doses used, but typically the vitamin D supplement was 50–100 micrograms per day.

“Despite the broad scope of this meta-analysis, the certainty of evidence remains low due to the heterogeneity of the populations studied and the due to the risk of bias associated with a large number of studies,” Doctoral Researcher and lead author Tuomas Mikola of the Institute of Clinical Medicine at the University of Eastern Finland says. The meta-analysis is part of Mikola’s Ph.D. thesis.

“These findings will encourage new, high-level clinical trials in patients with depression in order to shed more light on the possible role of vitamin D supplementation in the treatment of depression,” Mikola concludes.

The meta-analysis was published in Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition and carried out in international collaboration between Finnish, Australian and U.S. researchers.

The effect of vitamin D supplementation on depressive symptoms in adults: A systematic review and meta‐analysis of randomized controlled trials

Neurosteroid and immunological actions of vitamin D may regulate depression-linked physiology. Meta‐analyses investigating the effect of vitamin D on depression have been inconsistent.

This meta-analysis investigated the efficacy of vitamin D in reducing depressive symptoms among adults in randomized placebo-controlled trials (RCT).

General and clinical populations, and studies of ill individuals with systemic diseases were included. Light therapy, co-supplementation (except calcium) and bipolar disorder were exclusionary.

Databases Medline, PsycINFO, CINAHL and The Cochrane Library were searched to identify relevant articles in English published before April 2022. Cochrane risk-of-bias tool (RoB 2) and GRADE were used to appraise studies. Forty-one RCTs (n = 53,235) were included. Analyses based on random-effects models were performed with the Comprehensive Meta-analysis Software.

Results for main outcome (n = 53,235) revealed a positive effect of vitamin D on depressive symptoms (Hedges’ g = −0.317, 95% CI [−0.405, −0.230], p < 0.001, I2 = 88.16%; GRADE: very low certainty). RoB assessment was concerning in most studies. Notwithstanding high heterogeneity, vitamin D supplementation ≥ 2,000 IU/day appears to reduce depressive symptoms.

Future research should investigate possible benefits of augmenting standard treatments with vitamin D in clinical depression.

Kanye West keeps a low profile as he visits Malibu house with OnlyFans model Monica Corgan

Kanye West took an active role in the construction on his $57 million Malibu home when he visited the site on Friday.

The 45-year-old rapper had a special guest with him, the OnlyFans model Monica Corgan, who did her best to keep a low profile.

Kanye’s focus on his gutted home, which he purchased last year for a staggering $57.3 million, comes after he once again returned to Instagram, though this time without a post mocking his ex-wife Kim Kardashian or her now-ex Pete Davidson.

Checking in on the place: Kanye West, 45, tightened his hoodie to obscure his face as he visited his $57 million Malibu house with OnlyFans model Monica Corgan on Friday

Kanye was dressed casually in an all-black minimalist ensemble for the site visit.

He had on a black tank top hoodie with cut-off sleeves, which revealed a hint of his bare chest underneath.

The Monster rapper had his hood pulled up, and he also had on a black baseball cap.

He looked comical as he pulled the drawstrings on his hoodie, scrunching it down so that there was only a tiny hole for his eyes to poke out of.

Walking by the producer’s side was Corgan, who sported dark hair tied back in a bun and a set of enormous bug-eyed black sunglasses that obscured her face.

She followed Kanye’s example and pulled up her hood to partly cover the bottom of her face.

Corgan, who previously was seen caching a screening of Top Gun: Maverick with West, showed off her trim, sporty figure later as the couple entered the house. She was spotted standing on a balcony and basking in the brilliant sun while wearing powder blue leggings that highlighted her toned legs and a matching tube top.

She contrasted the athleisure ensemble with a pair of pointy-toed black heels.

Monica removed her sunglasses as she and Kanye found a shady patch on another part of the balcony and chatted.

He seemed animated, and both could be seen smiling ear-to-ear at one point. The Flashing Lights rapper pulled out his phone at one point, and she leaned over to see his screen.

The house, which was originally put on the market for $75 million, was designed by the renowned Japanese architect Tadao Ando.

Kanye has been fascinated by Ando’s work ever since observing some of his striking architecture during a visit to Japan’s ‘art island’ Naoshima, according to Dirt.

The Malibu home, which is one of Ando’s few structures in the US, has been completely gutted by Kanye, who is far from completing the renovations, TMZ reported last month.

So far, Kanye has revealed almost nothing about his connection to Corgan.

The two were first linked in June, around the time of his split from the model Chaney Jones.

West and Corgan were snapped while they caught a screening of Tom Cruise’s blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick.

The rapper returned to Instagram on Friday, just four days after he took a parting shot at Pete Davidson before once again wiping his account.

‘Look to the children. Look to the homeless. As the biggest inspiration for all design,’ read the simple text post that he shared.

It’s not clear if the current designs he is working on for his Malibu home relate to that philosophy, though he’s like to share more of his creative process down the line.

Prior to that relatively innocuous post, Kanye brought what seemed to be a relatively peaceful phase of his divorce from Kim Kardashian to a screeching halt.

After news broke that she and his oft-mocked nemesis Pete Davidson had broken up, he posted a meme of a fake New York Times front page with a massive headline reading, ‘Skete Davidson Dead At Age 28.’

He also included a jab at his former friend Kid Cudi in minuscule text at the bottom which referenced him ending his Rolling Loud set early after audience members threw bottles and other objects at him.

Can’t help himself: Prior to that relatively innocuous post, Kanye brought a peaceful phase of his divorce from Kim Kardashian to a screeching halt with a meme mocking her ex Pete Davidson after their split

Following the post, a source exclusively told DailyMail.com that Kim found it ‘appalling.’

‘Kim won’t stand for this. She is demanding that Kanye take the post down, but he won’t,’ said a source close to the reality icon.

Although there was no indication that the formerly married couple might get back together, Kanye’s behavior toward her and Pete — and his final parting shot at the comedian — seems to have ended those prospects for good.

‘She has been vigorously defending Pete. She’ll never get back together with Kanye over the way he’s treated the people she loves and respects,’ the source continued.

Hours after he shared the post, it was taken down and his Instagram was again empty.

SpaceX launches 46 Starlink satellites, lands rocket on drone ship

SpaceX sent another batch of its Starlink internet satellites on Friday (Aug. 12).

SpaceX brought Group 3-3 of the Starlink constellation into orbit from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California at 5:40 p.m. EDT (2140 GMT; 2:40 p.m. local time).

A Falcon 9 rocket launched the 46 Starlink craft into space. About nine minutes after launch, the rocket’s first stage landed atop a drone ship in the Pacific Ocean a little less than nine minutes after liftoff. The second stage was expected to deploy the satellites 63 minutes after launch, after the livestream concluded.

The new bunch of satellites are part of Group 3, which orbits in a shell that may be prone to debris “squalls” from a Russian anti-satellite test that took place in November 2021, according to a recent report by SpaceNews (opens in new tab).

SpaceNews reported that the space-tracking company COMSPOC recently disclosed an event called a “conjunction squall,” during which 6,000 close approaches affected 841 Starlink satellites, representing about 30% of the SpaceX constellation.

A conjunction, by COMSPOC standards, is defined as two orbiting objects being within 6 miles (10 kilometers) of each other. SpaceX hasn’t commented on whether any Starlinks were affected, but in past discussions about space junk, the company has emphasized that its satellites can maneuver to dodge close-approaching spacecraft or debris.

Group 3 (of SpaceX’s five layers of satellites) spacecraft are in a similar orbit to other other sun-synchronous satellites that have come close to the Russian ASAT debris before, COMSPOC said in the report.

Group 3 is at an inclination of 97.6 degrees and at an altitude of 347 miles (560 kilometers), according to Teslarati (opens in new tab). SpaceX has already sent two other Group 3 collections into orbit, on July 10 and July 22, both from Vandenberg.

SpaceX’s 36th launch of 2022 added to its ever-growing record for launches in a year. The company also concluded its 62nd consecutive landing of a first stage, and a 34th reflight of a booster in 2022.

Friday’s flight was the 10th for this particular Falcon 9 first stage, according to a SpaceX mission description (opens in new tab).

AMD RDNA 3 GPUs For Radeon RX 7000 Graphics Cards Detailed

Tech outlet Angstronomics has a very detailed roundup published regarding the specifications of AMD’s RDNA 3 GPUs such as the Navi 31, Navi 32, and Navi 33 chips that will go on to power their next-gen Radeon RX 7000 series graphics cards.

AMD Navi 31, Navi 32, Navi 33 “RDNA 3” GPUs For Radeon RX 7000 Series Graphics Cards Detailed

Previously leaked information within the Linux patches has revealed that there are going to be at least four RDNA 3 IPs that will be launched for the consumer segment. These include Navi 31, Navi 32, Navi 33, and an APU design.

GC IP VER GFX ID AMDGPU_FAMILY (via Coelacanth-Dream) TYPE
11.0.0 gfx1100 (Navi31) AMDGPU_FAMILY_GC_11_0_0 (FAMILY_GFX1100) dGPU
11.0.1 gfx1103 AMDGPU_FAMILY_GC_11_0_2 (FAMILY_GFX1103) APU
11.0.2 gfx1102 (Navi32) AMDGPU_FAMILY_GC_11_0_0 (FAMILY_GFX1100) dGPU
11.0.3? gfx1101 (Navi33)? AMDGPU_FAMILY_GC_11_0_0 (FAMILY_GFX1100)? dGPU?

Now Angstronomics has reported information such as die sizes, GPU configurations, and features that may end up in the final retail products. An interesting statement by the tech outlet has been made which reveals that configurations for Navi 3X GPUs were first formulated in 2019 and then finalized sometime in 2020. These specifications have not been changed since however, various rumors have pointed out two different specifications for the GPUs which means that either AMD has in fact made changes since their final designs or those rumors were simply not aligned with the truth. With that said, let’s see what sort of configurations we can expect with the Navi 3x “RDNA 3” GPU lineup.

AMD confirmed that its RDNA 3 GPUs will be coming later this year with a huge performance uplift. The company’s Senior Vice President of Engineering, Radeon Technologies Group, David Wang, said that the next-gen GPUs for Radeon RX 7000 series will offer over 50% performance per watt uplift vs the existing RDNA 2 GPUs. Some of the key features of the RDNA 3 GPUs highlighted by AMD will include:

  • 5nm Process Node
  • Advanced Chiplet Packaging
  • Rearchitected Compute Unit
  • Optimized Graphics Pipeline
  • Next-Gen AMD Infinity Cache
  • >50% Perf/Watt vs RDNA 2

Gamers should expect fluid 4K gaming to be buttery smooth on these graphics cards and with the FidelityFX suite offering next-gen FSR, SAS, and SAM support, we might even see playable 60 FPS at 8K resolution.

AMD Navi 31 “Plum Bonito” GPU Configuration

The AMD Navi 31 GPU, the flagship RDNA 3 chip, would power the next-gen enthusiast cards such as the Radeon RX 7900 XT graphics card. We have heard that AMD will drop CU (Compute Units) in favor of WGP (Work Group Processors) on its next-gen RDNA 3 GPUs. Each WGP will house dual CU (Compute Units) but with twice the SIMD32 clusters as opposed to just 2 on each CU within RDNA 2. Rumors are that AMD has the option to select between Samsung and TSMC for the 6nm die.

  • AMD Navi 31: 12288 Cores, 384-bit Bus, 192 MB Infinity Cache, 308mm2 GPU Die @5nm
  • AMD Navi 21: 5120 Cores, 384-bit Bus, 128 MB Infinity Cache, 520mm2 GPU Die @7nm

According to the latest information, the AMD Navi 31 GPU with RDNA 3 architecture is expected to offer a single GCD with 48 WGPs, 12 SAs, and 6 SEs. This will give out a total of 12,288 SPs or stream processors. This is an increase of 2.4x in cores compared to the 5120 SPs featured on the Navi 21 GPU. The GPU or the Navi 31 GCD is said to measure 308mm2 and will come packaged on TSMC’s 5nm process node.

The Navi 31 GPU will also carry 6 MCD’s which will feature 16 MB Infinity Cache per die and are also likely to carry the 64-bit (32-bit x 2) memory controllers that will provide the chip with a 384-bit bus interface. While this equals 96 MB of Infinity Cache which is lower than the 128 MB featured on the current Navi 21 GPUs, there’s also a 3D-Stacked solution in the works which was pointed out recently and that would double the Infinity Cache with 32 MB (16 MB 0-hi + 16 MB 1-hi) capacities for a total of 192 MB of cache. This is a 50% increase versus the current Navi 21 design and it also makes Navi 31 the first GPU with both, chiplet and 3D stacked designs. These chiplets or MCD’s will be fabricated on TSMC’s 6nm process node and measure 37.5mm2 each.

The outlet reports that there was an even higher 288 MB (16 MB 0-Hi + 16 MB 1-Hi + 16 MB 2-Hi) MCD package planned but that was scrapped due to cost-benefit reasons. There are also talks of a cut-down variant of the Navi 31 GPU which will feature 42 WGPs or 10,752 cores and 5 MCDs for 80MB Infinity Cache across a 320-bit bus interface.

Now, this is going to result in higher power draw and AMD seems to have confirmed this much that their next-generation graphics card lineup will feature higher power consumption but they will still be a more efficient option than what NVIDIA has to offer. The AMD Radeon RX 6950 XT already has a TBP of 335W so for a >2x performance gain. The cards are expected to retain their dual 8-pin plug input for power and feature an updated triple-fan cooling design which is slightly taller than the one currently in use.

AMD Navi 32 “Wheat Nas” GPU Configuration

The AMD Navi 32 GPU codenamed “Wheat Nas” is also one of the two MCM GPUs featured in the RDNA 3 lineup. The GPU will feature a single GCD (Graphics Compute Dies) and four MCDs (Multi-Cache Die). The GPU or GCD is said to measure 200mm2 while each MCD will retain the same size at 37.5mm2.

  • AMD Navi 32: 7680 Cores, 256-bit Bus, 64 MB Infinity Cache, 200mm2 GPU Die @5nm
  • AMD Navi 22: 2560 Cores, 192-bit Bus, 96 MB Infinity Cache, 335mm2 GPU Die @7nm

The GCD will be equipped with 3 Shader Engines and each Shader Engine has 6 Shader Arrays (18 in total). The GPU will feature a total of 30 WGP or 60 Compute Units for a total of 7680 cores. This rounds up to >50% more cores than the Navi 31 flagship.

Each MCD should also feature 2 memory connect links (32-bit). That’s a total of 8 32-bit memory controllers for a 256-bit bus interface. Each MCD will retain the 16 MB 0-Hi capacity but there does not seem to be any 1-Hi variant which means that the chip will have just 64 MB maximum configs. That Navi 32 GPU is said to launch in 2023 and will be the highest chip for mobile and mid-tier chip for desktops. The GPU would be first rolled out to the mobile segment and might be announced at CES 2023 which makes ideal sense since we will have Phoenix Range and Dragon Range laptops with Zen 4 cores ready by then.

AMD Navi 32 “Hotpink Bonefish” GPU Configuration

The AMD Navi 33 GPU codenamed “Hotpink Bonefish” will start the monolithic segment within the RDNA 3 family. The GPU will feature a single die. The die is very similar to the flagship Navi 21 GPU and is expected to utilize a 6nm process node for fabrication with a die size of 203mm2.

  • AMD Navi 33: 4096 Cores, 128-bit Bus, 32 MB Infinity Cache, 335mm2 GPU Die @6nm
  • AMD Navi 23: 2048 Cores, 128-bit Bus, 32 MB Infinity Cache, 237mm2 GPU Die @7nm

The Navi 33 GCD is expected to feature 2 Shader Engines and each Shader Engine has 2 Shader Arrays (2 per SE / 4 in total). This rounds up to 16 WGP’s or 32 Compute Units for a total of 4096 cores which is higher than the Radeon RX 6800 “Navi 21 XL” GPU. The GPU will come packaged with 32 MB of Infinity Cache, the same amount as the Navi 23 GPU, and across a 128-bit wide bus. Just like the Navi 32 GPUs, the Navi 33 chips will be focused first on the mobile lineup with early graphics performance putting them ahead of the Intel Arc Alchemist lineup at less than half the cost & while pulling less power.

The outlet also talks about two new features coming to AMD RDNA 3 Navi 3x GPUs for Radeon RX 7000 series graphics cards such as:

One of the features in the RDNA 3 graphics pipeline is OREO: Opaque Random Export Order, which is just one of the many area saving techniques. With gfx10, the pixel shaders run out-of-order, where the outputs go into a Re-Order Buffer before moving to the rest of the pipeline in-order. With OREO, the next step (blend) can now receive and execute operations in any order and export to the next stage in-order. Thus, the ROB can be replaced with a much smaller skid buffer, saving area.

The Memory Attached Last Level (MALL) Cache blocks are each halved in size, doubling the number of banks for the same cache amount. There are also changes and additions that increase graphics to MALL bandwidth and reduce the penalty of going out to VRAM.

via Angstronomics

The AMD Radeon RX 7000 “RDNA 3” GPU lineup based on the Nav 3x GPUs is expected to launch later this year with reports pitting the flagship Navi 31 launch first followed by Navi 32 and Navi 33 GPUs.

Taylor Swift, Kendrick Lamar Eligible for Best Live Action Short Oscar – The Hollywood Reporter

The three Oscar categories that recognize films which run 40 minutes or shorter — best live action short, best documentary short and best animated short — are often regarded as “minor,” but this year’s contenders for them will include some major names.

On the heels of recent Academy Awards ceremonies at which Oscars for short films were taken home by the likes of retired NBA legend Kobe Bryant, former NFL player Matthew A. Cherry and Hollywood A-lister Riz Ahmed, The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Taylor Swift’s filmmaking debut All Too Well: The Short Film — which the pop star has described as “a film about an effervescent, curious young woman who ends up completely out of her depth” — received an Oscar-qualifying run, making it eligible for the best live action short Oscar, and is working with a top consulting firm to guide its awards campaign.

The 14-minute production (watch it here), which Swift wrote and directed a decade after the release of her massively acclaimed power ballad “All Too Well,” screened at the AMC Lincoln Square for one week last fall, from Nov. 12 (the day of its premiere there) through Nov. 18. And while that timing would have precluded it from this season’s best picture race, which requires a release within the calendar year preceding the Oscars ceremony, it works just fine for the best live action short race. The eligibility window of which began on Oct. 1, 2021 and runs through Sept. 30.

Swift, who has never been Oscar-nominated, but is also generating buzz this year for her original song “Carolina” featured in Where the Crawdads Sing, injected some new mojo behind All Too Well: The Short Film during the Tribeca Film Festival over the summer. On June 11, accompanied by her leading lady Sadie Sink (Stranger Things) and leading man Dylan O’Brien (Teen Wolf), she attended a screening of the film at a jam-packed Beacon Theatre and then spoke about it with filmmaker/fan Mike Mills — citing Barbara Stanwyck’s films, especially 1937’s Stella Dallas, as major influences, and emphasizing, “This is not a music video” — before performing “All Too Well” live for besotted fans.

Swift is not the only music star with a film that will be in the running for the best live action short Oscar. Kendrick Lamar’s We Cry Together, a six-minute film starring himself and Zola’s Taylour Paige as a quarreling couple, which Lamar made to supplement his song of the same name that was featured on the album he released in May, Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers, quietly played at the Laemmle Royal Theater in West. L.A. from June 3 through June 9, qualifying it for the race.

I’m told that pgLang, a company recently created by Lamar and Dave Free, four-walled Laemmle’s 180-seat main theater for one screening per day, each of which occured under the oversight of a special outside security detail that collected the phones of all attendees. Attendees were mostly family and friends of those associated with the project, although roughly 20 members of the public were also able to buy tickets to each showing.

Another short with familiar names attached to it — this one a short of the documentary variety — is 38 at the Garden, which revisits the story of former New York Knicks basketball star Jeremy Lin, who came out of nowhere a decade ago to dominate the NBA during a period known as “Linsanity.” Produced by 2021 best live action short Oscar winner Travon Free (who, for Two Distant Strangers, became that award’s first Black winner) and EP’d by CNN host Lisa Ling, the film — for which Lin granted a rare interview — marks the directorial debut of Frank Chi, an Asian-American who runs a DC-area political creative agency, and has had audiences cheering and crying since beginning its film festival run at Tribeca in June.

38 at the Garden — a reference to a particularly remarkable Lin performance at Madison Square Garden on Feb. 10, 2012 — most recently screened at the HollyShorts festival in Hollywood on Thursday, and will hit HBO on Oct. 11. At a time of rising hate crimes against Asian-Americans, the story of a person who brought such great pride to that community, and whose popularity extended far beyond it, is especially moving. And given the fact that Bryant’s Dear Basketball won best animated short in 2018 and Ben Proudfoot’s The Queen of Basketball won best documentary short earlier this year, we can safely assume that today’s Oscar voters are not averse to stories about life on the hardwood as were those who a generation ago declined to even nominate one of the greatest documentary features ever made, Steve James’s 1994 masterpiece Hoop Dreams.

31-year-old Proudfoot has another doc short in the mix this year: Mink! (which you can watch here), the story of the late Patsy Takemoto Mink, the first woman of color ever elected to the U.S. House of Represenatives and a co-author of the landmark legislation known as Title IX. If Mink! — which The New York Times Op-Docs series dropped on June 23, the 50th anniversary of the signing of Title IX — is nominated, that would make Proudfoot the only person to ever land best documentary short noms in three consecutive years (his run started with A Concerto Is a Conversation) other than Dick Young (who was nominated in 1980, 1981 and 1982, and, unlike Proudfoot, never won).

One of Proudfoot’s executive producers on the project? Professional tennis star Naomi Osaka.

House Democrats pass $739B Manchin-Schumer spending and tax increase bill

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

House Democrats passed on Friday a $739 billion climate change, tax hike, and healthcare bill, giving President Biden’s domestic agenda a boost at a time of record high inflation and low presidential job approval numbers.

In a 220-to-207 vote, the House voted along party lines to approve the legislation. Every single Democrat supported the bill in the face of opposition from all Republicans except three who did not vote.

“Today is really a glorious day for us,” said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. “We send to the president’s desk a monumental bill that will be truly for the people.”

Republicans vehemently opposed the bill, arguing its provisions will worsen the U.S. economy and impose new burdens on American workers.

“Remember this day,” said House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif. “When Democrats jammed through a 700-page bill that raises your taxes and doubles the size of the IRS.”

The legislation, which has already been passed by the Senate, now heads to the president, who is expected to sign it shortly. Its passage represents a win for Biden, whose young White House tenure has been rocked by 40-year high inflation, recession and sinking poll numbers.

“This bill reflects much of what we wanted to see — not everything we wanted to see — let me be clear on that, but it is a very significant step forward,” said House Majority leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md. “It will reduce the deficit, lower costs and expand access to affordable health care, all while making the biggest investment in history to address the global climate crisis.”

Democrats began working on the bill shortly after Biden took office. Initially named Build Back Better, the legislation was proposed as an ambitious overhaul of the nation’s economy and climate infrastructure.

TRUMP PLEDGES TO CAMPAIGN AGAINST MANCHIN IN WEST VIRGINIA BECAUSE OF SPENDING BILL DEAL

Boasting a price tag above $3.5 trillion, that iteration of the legislation disintegrated in the face of Democratic disunity within the 50-50 Senate.

Sen. Joe Manchin, in particular, refused to support the bill last year over concerns it would exacerbate inflation. The West Virginia Democrat’s opposition was enough to derail the bill, since widespread GOP opposition meant the only way to pass the bill through the Senate was by a party-line process known as budget reconciliation.

Despite Manchin’s opposition, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., worked to revive the package. Out of those private negotiations between Schumer and Manchin arose the Inflation Reduction Act.

The bill allows Medicare to negotiate the price of some life-saving prescription drugs starting in 2023. Democrats say the move will save the government $288 billion over the next decade.

“Democrats have been fighting for years to lower drug prices, and this bill lets Medicare negotiate with drug companies,” said Rep. James McGovern, D-Mass. “It caps the out-of-pocket cost of insulin at $35 for people on Medicare … if you’re on Medicare, you won’t have to pay more than $2,000 a year for your prescriptions.”

The Manchin-Schumer bill also imposes a 15% minimum tax on corporations, a move that is slated to raise $313 billion. Democrats also say by investing in the Internal Revenue Service they can save an additional $124 billion.

Overall, the bill proposes to raise $739 billion. Of that sum, $369 billion is slated to go to climate change subsidies to try to help reach Biden’s goal of cutting greenhouse gas emissions 40% by 2030. A further $64 billion will go to expanding ObamaCare subsidies.

The rest of the new revenue, more than $300 billion, will go to paying down the deficit.

Why is The Villages known as ‘the STD capital of America?’

Friends up north and across Tampa Bay snickered when Brian Lafferty revealed where he’d bought a new home.

His 30-year-old daughter in Boston called to express concern.

Even his ex-wife asked him about it.

“Without exception, every person I’ve told I bought a house in The Villages has asked the same thing,” Lafferty said. “‘Isn’t that the STD capital of the United States?’”

The Villages, a mammoth retirement community that was the fastest-growing metropolitan area in the nation two years ago, is no stranger to folklore. The central Florida senior haven has fielded rumors about swingers and public sex for decades.

But perhaps no myth is more ubiquitous — or more enduring — than the idea of rampant rates of sexually transmitted diseases.

“I feel like I have to justify to every single person I know that I didn’t buy this place to chase women,” said Lafferty, who is 69 and single. “I bought it because I want to play golf.”

Sexually transmitted infections are on the rise nationally in the wake of the pandemic. But is the world’s largest retirement community — about 80 miles northeast of Tampa — really a hotbed for these diseases?

Where did this pervasive legend start? And will it ever go away?

‘More worried about alligators than crabs’

Residents hear the joke all too often. A Tampa Bay Times inquiry on the 38,000-member Facebook group, “The Villages Word of Mouth,” was revealing.

“My doctor in Ohio even, when he asked where we spend time in Florida, stated ‘Oh, The Villages — the highest STD rate in the country,’” wrote Jan Schweitzer on the post.

“We are more worried about alligators than crabs here,” typed Sean Donnelly.

Roy Rowlett wrote: “It doesn’t matter what the truth is. Some people love gossip about old people and sex.”

A moderator disabled comments on the post within days. It had received more than 300 responses.

Rumors abound about how the STD rumor started.

Some say a disgruntled nurse hurled it as an insult. Others believe it began with a joke on a radio station. But most trace it to a 2006 television news story “Doctors in Retirement Community Seeing Increase in STDs.”

“While statistics aren’t yet reflecting the trend, one physician at the Women’s Center of The Villages said, even in her years working in Miami, she has never seen so many cases,” the since-removed WFTV article reported.

The Women’s Center of The Villages is no longer open. And the doctor was never named.

The myth snowballed from there. It appeared over the years everywhere from the New York Post to the Daily Mail. Often, the stories seized on signs that The Villagers were engaging in casual sex or dating, wielding them as evidence of heavy transmission within the retirement community.

Sometimes, they cited data about the state’s rising rates of sexually transmitted infections among seniors as proof that the same held true in The Villages.

In 2009, the New York Post called The Villages “ground zero for geriatrics who are seriously getting it on.”

“As a result, the place that likes to bill itself as ‘America’s Friendliest Hometown’ has seen a huge increase in sexually transmitted diseases,” according to a 2013 Slate article referencing the tabloid’s coverage. It cited two links that are no longer active, including the 2006 story.

“It had legs,” said Andrew Blechman, author of “Leisureville: Adventures in a World Without Children,” a 2009 book on life in The Villages that is referenced in almost all coverage of this issue. “It’s irresistible — no one wants to think about their parents having sex, but they love news articles about old people having sex. ‘STDs. Old People. Highest rates.’ It’s an easy headline. It’ll never go away.”

Is it true?

Residents of The Villages are, of course, sexually active, said Dr. Marivic Villa, an internist who runs a health clinic in the retirement community.

Many of her patients come seeking testosterone therapy to improve their sex lives. All of them are tested for sexually transmitted diseases.

“In reality, I don’t see much STDs,” said Villa, who has worked in The Villages almost two decades. “Compared to other practitioners, I should. People just want to paint the picture that old people here are like young people in New Orleans.

“I’m not saying that they’re not thinking about having sex,” she added. “They do — a lot — but not to the point that there’s STDs left and right and all over the place.”

Florida tracks sexually transmitted diseases by county of residence. A state Department of Health official declined to parse out the agency’s data on a more granular level, such as a census-designated place like The Villages, citing privacy concerns.

Covering an area larger than Manhattan, The Villages spans three Florida counties — Sumter, Marion and Lake.

Rates of bacterial sexually transmitted diseases — gonorrhea, syphilis and chlamydia — among people 55 and older have slightly trended upwards in these counties since 2006, the year the myth about The Villages is believed to have begun.

But so have sexually transmitted disease rates everywhere.

Since the 2000s, lawmakers have reallocated money for sexual health, a move that experts often credit with contributing to a nationwide spike. When barriers to health care are high, so are rates of sexually transmitted diseases, studies show.

Compared to Florida overall, however, the three counties containing The Villages tended to have significantly lower rates.

Sumter County had one of the lowest rates of sexually transmitted diseases among older adults in 2019 —with about one in 10,000. That’s compared to six in 10,000 seniors statewide. Marion and Lake bore similar trends. The same patterns emerged for diagnoses of human immunodeficiency virus, also known as HIV, among Florida’s older adults.

At the county-by-county level, The Villages similarly fared better than most.

Spread of sexually transmitted diseases among older adults in Florida tended to be higher in counties with major cities and large Black and Latino populations, state data suggest, such as Hillsborough, Miami-Dade and Broward counties. People of color, LGBTQ people and women experience disproportionately high rates of sexually transmitted diseases due to social determinants of health that are more likely to impact marginalized groups.

In The Villages, 86% of seniors are white, according to U.S. Census data. And the percentage of older adults living in poverty is slightly lower than the national rate, suggesting its retirees may have better access to health care than the country as a whole.

‘A punchline’

While sexually transmitted diseases like gonorrhea and syphilis are surging nationwide, much of this nascent spread is among adults in their teens and 20s, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data. Half of all infections are among people 15 to 24.

But rumors travel fast in communities with shared values and histories. In the United States, sexually transmitted diseases carry salacious weight — despite being remarkably common and highly treatable — due to ongoing stigma, said Elizabeth Finley, spokesperson for the National Coalition of S.T.D. Directors.

“One of the pervasive characteristics of sexually transmitted infections is that people turn them into a punchline,” Finley said. “Because there’s so much shame associated with them.”

Blechman, the author of Leisureville, suspected ageism plays a role.

“This really has nothing to do with concern about high STD rates — it has to do with old people having sex,” he said. “People who are older are just people who are older. And they should be treated with respect, not as a caricature.”

Many Villagers agreed, noting they’ve never heard the myth from someone living in the community.

“I think there’s a little bit of jealousy from the outside,” said Christine Wynne, a 50-year-old resident. “‘Oh, you don’t want to move there, there’s STDs.’ It’s utopia here. It’s safe, and everyone’s happy. I think that fueled some of those rumors.”

Some residents wondered why Mark Morse, the developer who owns The Villages, hadn’t spoken out to correct the record.

Notoriously averse to media interviews, Morse and The Villages community relations team did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

But Lafferty has a theory.

“It goes back to the old advertising world saying,” he said. “‘Any publicity is good publicity.’”

Everything Rumored for Apple’s September Event: iPhone 14, Apple Watch Pro and More

There’s just about a month to go until Apple holds its annual September event focusing on new iPhone and Apple Watch models. We thought we’d take a quick look at everything that’s rumored for Apple’s September event to give MacRumors readers a rundown on what to expect when the first fall event rolls around.

The iPhone 14 can probably be described more as an “‌iPhone‌ 13S” because it’s not expected to get a whole lot of changes. We’re expecting the same design and the same A-series chip, but camera improvements are a possibility. Note that Apple is getting rid of the 5.4-inch ‌iPhone‌ mini in the 2022 ‌iPhone‌ lineup, with the standard ‌iPhone 14‌ series to consist of a 6.1-inch ‌iPhone 14‌ and a larger 6.7-inch ‌iPhone 14‌ Max.

  • 6.1-inch ‌iPhone 14‌, and 6.7-inch ‌iPhone 14‌ Max. No mini.
  • No design changes, Face ID notch remains.
  • No ProMotion display.
  • New purple color, which joins black, white, red, and blue.
  • Improved Ultra Wide camera.
  • Upgraded front camera with wider f/1.9 aperture and autofocus capabilities.
  • A15 chip, which was previously used in the iPhone 13.
  • 6GB RAM.
  • Updated Snapdragon X65 10 Gigabit 5G modem and antenna system.
  • WiFi 6E.
  • $799 start price.

For full details on everything we’ve heard so far about the ‌iPhone 14‌, we have a dedicated iPhone 14 roundup.

Though the ‌iPhone 14‌ is more of an ‌iPhone‌ 13S, the same isn’t true for the iPhone 14 Pro models. Apple has bigger changes in store for its higher-tier and more expensive ‌iPhone 14 Pro‌ and ‌iPhone 14 Pro‌ Max models.

  • Same general flat-edged design with 6.1 and 6.7-inch size options.
  • ProMotion display technology, but with 1Hz to 120Hz upgrade that enables Always-On display technology.
  • No notch. Notch replaced with pill-shaped and hole-punch cutouts for camera and ‌Face ID‌ hardware.
  • Larger rear camera bumps and increased lens size.
  • Graphite, gold, silver, and purple color options.
  • Faster A16 chip.
  • Updated Snapdragon X65 10 Gigabit 5G modem and antenna system.
  • Vapor chamber thermal system to accommodate A16 chip and 5G modem.
  • 48-megapixel Wide lens with 21 percent larger sensor that supports higher-resolution images and 8K video recording.
  • Upgraded 7-element telephoto lens.
  • Improved Ultra Wide lens.
  • Upgraded front camera with wider f/1.9 aperture and autofocus capabilities.
  • 6GB RAM.
  • WiFi 6E.
  • Up to 2TB storage.
  • Possible price increase.

Full details on what to expect from the ‌iPhone 14 Pro‌ are available in our iPhone 14 Pro roundup.

The Series 8 is expected to get an iterative update that largely focuses on a few new features like temperature sensing, but there are some surprises to be had as Apple is also introducing a pro version of the Apple Watch.

  • Same general design as Series 7.
  • 41 and 45mm sizes.
  • S8 chip, which basically offers the same performance as the S7.
  • Low power mode for improved battery life.
  • Temperature sensor, which can let you know if your temperature is up. May be used for fertility tracking.
  • Possible car crash detection.

The Apple Watch Series 8 isn’t the only new Apple Watch that we’re getting this year. Apple is refreshing the Apple Watch SE and introducing a new higher-end Apple Watch that could be called the “Apple Watch Pro.”

  • Updated design that’s an “evolution of the current rectangular shape,” possibly with a flat display, but no flat edges.
  • Rugged, more durable build for extreme athletes.
  • More durable titanium alloy casing with shatter-resistant display.
  • Larger size with 2-inch diagonal screen that provides seven percent more display area.
  • 410 x 502 resolution.
  • Larger battery and longer battery life, could be as long as multiple days with new low power mode.
  • All ‌Apple Watch Series 8‌ features.
  • Could be priced at around $900 to $1,000.

An updated version of the AirPods Pro is on the horizon, but it’s not entirely clear if the refreshed earbuds will come out alongside the new ‌iPhone‌ and Apple Watch models or if Apple will introduce them later in the year.

  • Same general design as current ‌AirPods Pro‌ with silicone ear tips and stem.
  • Improved Find My integration.
  • Charging case with speaker holes to play sounds when lost.
  • AirPods 3 acoustics for improved sound.
  • Updated H1 chip with self-adaptive noise cancellation capabilities.
  • Possible Lossless audio (ALAC) support.
  • Lightning port.

Our full AirPods Pro 2 guide has even more information about everything we’ve heard about the ‌AirPods Pro‌ so far.

Potential September Event Date

There’s no word yet on when Apple will hold its annual September event, but given that the events almost always happen within the first two or three weeks of the month, we can make some educated guesses. September 5 is Labor Day, so that’s out, and most events are on Monday or Tuesday, though Wednesday is sometimes a possibility.

Most likely target dates:

  • September 7
  • September 13
  • September 14
  • September 20
  • September 21

September 12 and 13 are the two most likely dates, and if Apple does indeed plan to hold the event on one of these days, we could get an announcement the week before.

Past event dates:

  • 2015 – September 9
  • 2016 – September 7
  • 2017 – September 12
  • 2018 – September 12
  • 2019 – September 10
  • 2020 – September 15
  • 2021 – September 14

October Event

Apple’s September event isn’t the only event we’re going to get before the end of the year. We’re also counting on an October event that will see the launch of new iPad Pro models, a new low-cost iPad a revamped Apple TV, and an Apple silicon version of the Mac Pro.
