Bears QB Trevor Siemian starts vs. Jets despite oblique injury

There’s twists and turns. And then there’s the Chicago Bears’ backup quarterback situation.

After Justin Fields separated his left, non-throwing shoulder in Atlanta against the Falcons last Sunday and was declared inactive for Chicago’s game against the New York Jets, veteran QB Trevor Siemian is making his first start since Week 12 of the 2021 season, when he was with the New Orleans Saints.

After Siemian injured an oblique muscle during pregame warm-ups at MetLife Stadium, the team announced before the game that he would serve as the backup to quarterback Nathan Peterman, who the Bears promoted from the practice squad to the active roster on Saturday.

Despite that announcement, Siemian still started Sunday’s game, with Peterman serving as his backup.

With a diminished depth chart at quarterback, the Bears also have running back David Montgomery available as an emergency option.

“He’s kind of that extra green dot that we have in our back pocket,” offensive coordinator Luke Getsy said last week.

Niece of Iran’s Supreme Leader urges world to cut ties with Tehran -online video

DUBAI, Nov 27 (Reuters) – Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s niece, a well known rights activist, has called on foreign governments to cut all ties with Tehran over its violent crackdown on popular unrest kindled by the death in police custody of a young woman.

A video of a statement by Farideh Moradkhani, an engineer whose late father was a prominent opposition figure married to Khamenei’s sister, was being widely shared online after what activist news agency HRANA said was her arrest on Nov. 23.

“O free people, be with us and tell your governments to stop supporting this murderous and child-killing regime,” Moradkhani said in the video. “This regime is not loyal to any of its religious principles and does not know any rules except force and maintaining power.”

Khamenei’s office did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

HRANA said 450 protesters had been killed in more than two months of nationwide unrest as of Nov. 26, including 63 minors. It said 60 members of the security forces had been killed, and 18,173 protesters detained.

The protests, sparked by the death of 22-year-old Kurdish Iranian woman Mahsa Amini after her arrest for “inappropriate attire”, pose one of the strongest challenges to the country’s clerical establishment since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Jalal Mahmoudzadeh, a member of parliament from the mainly Kurdish city of Mahabad, said on Sunday that as many as 105 people had been killed in Kurdish-populated areas during the protests. He was speaking in a debate in parliament as quoted by the Entekhan website.

WIDESPREAD OPPOSITION

Challenging the Islamic Republic’s legitimacy, protesters from all walks of life have burned pictures of Khamenei and called for the downfall of Iran’s Shi’ite Muslim theocracy.

The video was shared on YouTube on Friday by her brother, France-based Mahmoud Moradkhani, who presents himself as “an opponent of the Islamic Republic” on his Twitter account, and then by prominent Iranian rights activists.

On Nov. 23, Mahmoud Moradkhani reported her sister’s arrest as she was heeding a court order to appear at the Tehran prosecutor’s office. Farideh had been arrested earlier this year by Iran’s Intelligence Ministry and later released on bail.

HRANA said she was in Tehran’s Evin security prison. Moradkhani, it said, had earlier faced a 15-year prison sentence on unspecified charges.

Her father, Ali Moradkhani Arangeh, was a Shi’ite cleric married to Khamenei’s sister and recently passed away in Tehran following years of isolation due to his stance against the Islamic Republic, according to his website.

Farideh Moradkhani added in her video: “Now is the time for all free and democratic countries to recall their representatives from Iran as a symbolic gesture and to expel the representatives of this brutal regime from their countries.”

On Thursday, the United Nations’ top human rights body decided by a comfortable margin to establish a new investigative mission to look into Tehran’s violent security crackdown on the anti-government protests.

Criticism of the Islamic Republic by relatives of top officials is not unprecedented. In 2012, Faezeh Hashemi Rafsanjani, the daughter of late former president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, was sentenced to jail for “anti-state propaganda”.

Iranian authorities released on bail the activist and blogger Hossein Ronaghi on Nov. 26 to undergo medical treatment, according to his brother writing on Twitter.

Concerns had been growing about Ronaghi’s health after he went on a hunger strike last month.

A look back at Elon Musk’s chaotic first month at Twitter

CNN
 —

Sunday officially marks one month since the world’s richest man took the helm at Twitter.

In that time, Elon Musk initiated mass layoffs and gave remaining staffers a cryptic ultimatum, reinstated the accounts of controversial figures including former President Donald Trump, and launched – then punted – a plan to charge for Twitter’s iconic blue checkmarks.

After spending months embroiled in an unsuccessful legal battle to get out of his initial proposal to buy Twitter, Musk made his first splashy entrance into the company’s offices on Oct. 26, carrying a sink. (In a video of the incident shared on Twitter, he wrote: “Entering Twitter HQ – let that sink in!)

Since then, the billionaire has seemingly left no stone unturned during his whirlwind first month as “Chief Twit.” Here is a look at the range of ways Musk (who is still, simultaneously, CEO of his other companies Tesla and SpaceX) has already left his mark on one of the world’s most influential social media platforms.

Almost immediately after Musk completed his drama-plagued $44 billion deal to buy Twitter, he fired former CEO Parag Agrawal and other executives. He then made himself the CEO and sole director of the platform, per a securities filing.

The dramatic leadership shakeup, however, was only the first taste of the major staffing overhaul to come. Musk began wide-ranging layoffs across the company, reducing its overall headcount by roughly 50% in the span of a couple of days.

On the eve of Nov. 3 and into Nov. 4, numerous now-former Twitter employees began posting on the platform that they had been locked out of their company email accounts as the job cuts began to play out in a very dramatic, public manner.

The layoffs impacted departments including ethical AI, marketing and communication, search, public policy, and more. As the workers said goodbye to their colleagues online (many sharing blue hearts and salute emojis to signal they had lost their jobs at Twitter), Musk remained largely silent, at least on the job cuts.

In another dramatic move by the new boss, Musk publicly fired a software engineer who had survived the initial round of cuts, but who then questioned Musk on Twitter.

In a late-night internal email after the mass staff cuts, Musk asked Twitter’s remaining employees to commit to “extremely hardcore” work or else leave the company with severance pay.

“Going forward, to build a breakthrough Twitter 2.0 and succeed in an increasingly competitive world, we will need to be extremely hardcore,” Musk wrote in the memo sent out on Nov. 16. “This will mean working long hours at high intensity. Only exceptional performance will constitute a passing grade.”

In the memo, Musk goes on to outline how Twitter will be “much more engineering-driven” and then gives staff an ultimatum. “If you are sure that you want to be part of the new Twitter, please click yes on the link below,” directing staff to what appears to be an online form.

Musk said any employee who has not done so by 5 p.m. ET on the following day, Thursday, would receive three months severance.

In the shadow of the mass exodus of workers, a departure of advertisers was also brewing.

Since Musk’s takeover, a handful of brands – ranging from General Mills to the North Face to the Volkswagen Group – confirmed a pause in advertising on the social network as civil society organizations raised new concern over the direction of the company under Musk.

Approximately a week after he took over the company, Musk said that it had seen a “massive drop in revenue.”

“Twitter has had a massive drop in revenue, due to activist groups pressuring advertisers, even though nothing has changed with content moderation and we did everything we could to appease the activists,” he said in a tweet on Nov. 4. “Extremely messed up! They’re trying to destroy free speech in America.”

Another aspect of Twitter that Musk quickly upended is one of the platform’s most familiar features for its users: the verified blue check marks that had long been used to confirm the authenticity of government officials, journalists, and other public figures.

“Twitter’s current lords & peasants system for who has or doesn’t have a blue checkmark is bullsh*t,” Musk tweeted on Nov. 1. “Power to the people! Blue for $8/month.”

Sure enough, on Nov. 5, Twitter launched an updated version of its iOS app that allowed users to pay a monthly subscription fee to receive a blue check mark on their profiles. The update, as outlined on Apple’s App Store at the time, stated that users would now have to pay $7.99 per month for the company’s Twitter Blue subscription to receive a check mark on the platform, “just like the celebrities, companies, and politicians you already follow.”

Within days of the rollout of the subscription service, Twitter was inundated with a wave of celebrity and corporate impersonators who quickly gamed the new system to pose as brands and prominent figures.

Chaos ensued. In one viral example, a fake account, which featured a newly purchased blue check mark, purporting to be pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly tweeted that a critical diabetes drug would now be free.

In the wake of the mayhem, Musk ultimately announced that it would delay the rollout of the subscription service until the end of the month.

“Punting relaunch of Blue Verified to November 29th to make sure that it is rock solid,” Musk tweeted on Nov. 15.

On Nov. 24 Musk gave a slightly different target date for the relaunch, Dec. 2, and offered more details about the future service, including a range of check mark colors to denote the type of verified account.

On Nov. 19, Musk restored the Twitter account of former President Donald Trump, nearly two years after it had been permanently banned following the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol.

The move came shortly after Twitter restored the accounts of several other controversial, previously banned or suspended users, including conservative Canadian podcaster Jordan Peterson, right-leaning satire website Babylon Bee, comedian Kathy Griffin and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Ahead of restoring Trump’s Twitter account, Musk posted a poll asking the platform’s users if Trump should be reinstated – where a slim majority (51.8%) voted in favor of it.

“The people have spoken. Trump will be reinstated,” Musk tweeted. “Vox Populi, Vox Dei.” (Latin for “the voice of the people is the voice of God.”).

Trump has previously said he would remain on his own platform, Truth Social, instead of rejoining Twitter, and has yet to tweet since his account came back online.

But a change in his approach could hold major political implications as Trump has said he will seek the Republican presidential nomination in 2024.

After conducting yet another Twitter poll, Musk said on Nov. 24 that he will begin restoring most previously banned accounts on Twitter starting next week. This would mark his most far-reaching move yet to undo the social media platform’s policy of permanently suspending users who repeatedly violated its rules.

The Thanksgiving Day announcement came after most respondents voted in favor of his poll over whether to offer “general amnesty to suspended accounts, provided that they have not broken the law or engaged in egregious spam.”

Once again, Musk tweeted that “the people have spoken.”

His recent decisions to reinstate previously banned accounts, based on the results of his polls on the platform, is notably at odds with how Musk previously said he would handle such choices.

Just a day after his takeover of Twitter, Musk said that the social media company “will be forming a content moderation council with widely diverse viewpoints.”

“No major content decisions or account reinstatements will happen before that council convenes,” Musk added

It is not immediately clear if that council was ever created, convened, or involved in the decision-making behind bringing back Trump and formerly banned accounts.

Protests against China’s covid lockdowns erupt after Xinjiang fire

Comment

Protests erupted in cities and on campuses across China this weekend as frustrated and outraged citizens took to the streets in a stunning wave of demonstrations against the government’s “zero covid” policy and the leaders enforcing it.

Residents in Shanghai, China’s most populous city, came together Saturday night and early Sunday, calling for the end of pandemic lockdowns and chanting “We want freedom!” and “Unlock Xinjiang, unlock all of China!” according to witnesses at the event. In even more extraordinary scenes of public anger aimed at the government’s top leader, a group of protesters there chanted, “Xi Jinping, step down!” and “Communist Party, step down!”

“There were people everywhere,” said Chen, a 29-year-old Shanghai resident who arrived at the vigil around 2 a.m. Sunday. “At first people were yelling to lift the lockdown in Xinjiang, and then it became ‘Xi Jinping, step down, Communist Party step down!’” he said, giving only his surname because of security concerns.

The immediate trigger for the demonstrations, which were also seen at universities in Beijing, Xi’an and Nanjing on Saturday, was a deadly fire in Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang, in China’s far northwest on Thursday. Ten people, including three children, died after emergency fire services could not get close enough to an apartment building engulfed in flames. Residents blamed lockdown-related measures for hampering rescue efforts.

Officials on Friday denied that covid restrictions were a factor and said some residents’ “ability to rescue themselves was too weak,” fueling more ridicule and anger that swept across Chinese social media platforms. Residents in Urumqi, one of the most tightly controlled cities in China as a result of a broader security crackdown, turned out to protest Friday. Many waved China’s national flag and called for lockdowns to be fully lifted.

That unrest spread. On Saturday, Shanghai residents gathered for a candlelight vigil on Wulumuqi Middle Road, named after Urumqi, that turned into the demonstration. Photos sent to The Washington Post by a photographer at the scene showed protesters holding up blank sheets of paper — symbolic opposition to the country’s pervasive censorship — and placing flowers and candles for victims as the police looked on.

One person held up pieces of paper with the number ‘10’ written in Uyghur and Chinese in reference to the 10 victims in Urumqi. The crowd began passing the blank pages around.

“Everyone was holding it,” said Meng, the photographer, who gave only his surname because of safety concerns. “No one said anything, but we all knew what it meant. Delete all you want. You can’t censor what is unsaid.”

Such demonstrations are extremely rare in China, where authorities move quickly to stamp out all forms of dissent. Authorities are especially wary of protests at universities, the site of pro-democracy demonstrations in 1989 that spread across the country and ended in a bloody crackdown and massacre around Beijing’s Tiananmen Square.

With record covid cases, China scrambles to plug an immunity gap

At Communication University of China in Nanjing, posters mocking “zero covid” were taken down on Saturday, prompting one student to stand for hours holding a blank piece of paper in protest. Hundreds of students joined in solidarity.

Some placed flowers on the ground to honor the fire victims and chanted “rest in peace.” Others sang the Chinese national anthem as well as the left-wing anthem “The Internationale.” They shouted, “Long live the people!”

“I used to feel lonely, but yesterday everyone stood together,” said a 21-year-old photography student, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of safety concerns. “I feel that we are all brave, brave enough to pursue the rights we are owed, brave enough to criticize these mistakes, brave enough to express our position.”

“The students are like a spring, pressed down every day. Yesterday, that spring bounced back up,” he said.

Videos posted on social media on Sunday show a crowd of students at Tsinghua University in Beijing holding up blank pieces of paper and chanting, “Democracy, rule of law, freedom of expression!” Through a loudspeaker, a young woman shouted, “If because we are afraid of being arrested, we don’t speak, I believe our people will be disappointed in us. As a Tsinghua student, I will regret this my whole life.”

Crowds also gathered at the Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts, holding up their phones as part of a vigil for those who died in Urumqi, according to social media posts. Other posts show blurred-out protest slogans on campuses in four cities and two provinces.

Across the country, and not just at universities, citizens appear to be reaching a breaking point. In the name of “zero covid,” they have lived through almost three years of unrelenting controls that have left many sealed in their homes, sent to quarantine centers or barred from traveling. Residents must submit to repeated coronavirus tests and surveillance of their movement and health status.

The Urumqi fire followed a bus crash in September that killed 27 people as they were being taken to a quarantine center. In April, a sudden lockdown in Shanghai left residents without enough food and prompted online and offline protests. Deaths related to the restrictions, including a 3-year-old who died after his parents were unable to take him to a hospital, have further added to public anger.

Health authorities say this strategy of cutting off covid transmission as soon as possible and quarantining all positive cases is the only way to prevent a surge in severe cases and deaths, which would overwhelm the health-care system. As a result of its low infection rate, China’s population of 1.4 billion has a low level of natural immunity. Those who have been immunized have received domestically made vaccines that have proved less effective against the more infectious omicron variant.

As China eases coronavirus restrictions, confusion and angst follow

The Xinjiang fire also comes after weeks of especially heightened frustration over the pandemic policies, which were loosened and then tightened again in some places amid a new surge in cases. On Sunday, China reported 39,791 new infections, its fourth consecutive day of a record number of cases.

An article in the state-run People’s Daily on Sunday called for “unswerving commitment” to the current covid policies. At a briefing Sunday, Urumqi officials said public transport would partially resume Monday as part of efforts to gradually lift lockdown measures.

In Shanghai, police eventually swarmed the location of the vigil and closed off access to the road. They clashed with protesters, pushing them into cars before dispersing the crowd around 5 a.m. At one point, the crowd tried to stop police from dragging away a man reciting a poem in honor of the victims.

Videos posted Sunday show crowds in the area shouting, “Let them go!” an apparent reference to those arrested. Chen said he saw a dozen people get arrested.

“I’m not the kind of person that is a leader,” he said, “but if there’s a chance to speak out or do something to help, I want to.”

Queen Elizabeth Had Cancer Before She Died, New Book Claims

Welcome to this week’s edition of Royalist, The Daily Beast’s newsletter for all things royal and Royal Family. Subscribe here to get it in your inbox every Sunday.

Queen died while suffering from cancer, author says

Queen Elizabeth was suffering through cancer in the last months of her life, according to well-connected author Gyles Brandreth. Brandreth, in his new book Elizabeth: An Intimate Portrait—as reported by the Daily Mailwrites: “I had heard that the queen had a form of myeloma—bone marrow cancer—which would explain her tiredness and weight loss and those ‘mobility issues’ we were often told about during the last year or so of her life.

“The most common symptom of myeloma is bone pain, especially in the pelvis and lower back, and multiple myeloma is a disease that often affects the elderly. Currently, there is no known cure, but treatment—including medicines to help regulate the immune system and drugs that help prevent the weakening of the bones—can reduce the severity of its symptoms and extend the patient’s survival by months or two to three years.” (The queen’s death certificate recorded that she had died of old age.)

In the days preceding her death on September 8, 2022, Brandreth writes that the queen had Sunday lunch with the Right Reverend Dr Iain Greenshields, the vicar of the local Braemar and Crathie Parish Church. “They talk about the queen’s childhood, her horses, church affairs (she is ‘well up to speed’) and her sadness at what is happening in Ukraine.” She also spoke to Clive Cox, one of her favorite racehorse trainers, as well as meeting at Balmoral an outgoing Prime Minister (Boris Johnson) and anointing a new one (Liz Truss, whose tenure ended up being the shortest of any prime minister).

On that day, a last poignant picture of the queen was taken.

Brandreth also says he does not believe that the queen was, as reported, at Prince Philip’s bedside when he died in April 2021.

“That morning, he went to the bathroom, helped by a nurse. When he came back, he said he felt a little faint and wanted help getting back into bed. The nurse called the Duke’s valet and the queen’s page, Paul Whybrew, for help—and he died before the queen could be called,” Brandreth writes. He adds that the couple would go “weeks” without seeing each other later in their lives, the queen recognizing that Philip did not want to be “fussed over.” The pandemic bought them back into close living quarters again, and they both enjoyed it, Brandreth said.

In a second extract, reported the Mail, Brandreth said the queen had liked Meghan Markle, and did “everything to make her feel welcome” into the family. The queen was “devoted” to Harry, but thought he was “perhaps a little too in-love” with Meghan. Brandreth said the queen told Meghan: “You can carry on being an actress if you like—that’s your profession, after all.” On the bombshells told by the couple to Oprah Winfrey, the queen was more concerned with Harry’s well-being rather than “this television nonsense,” as she allegedly called it.

Even more fabulously, when Prince Andrew whined about the Oprah interview, the queen reminded him of the time his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson gave an interview to Oprah.

While other family members found it “bewildering” that Harry and Meghan named their daughter Lilibet, as a tribute to the queen’s nickname, the queen said it was “pretty and seems just right.” Brandreth also says that courtiers refer to Harry and Meghan as “persons who live overseas.”

The battle of the royals lands on the east coast

It may not be the rumble in the jungle, but America is about to host another juicy fight. The Telegraph reports that Prince William and Kate Middleton “won’t be distracted,” and are feeling bullish about their three-day trip to North America this week beginning Wednesday, ahead of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s appearance at a ritzy New York awards ceremony to receive an award after they leave.

“The Palace team are highly cognizant of Meghan and Harry, but equally, they’re not scared of their shadows on this,” a royal source told the Telegraph. “William is the future king. Harry has taken his path, she’s doing her podcast, they’ve got their issues, but the palace isn’t going to run scared of that, so kudos to them.”

It’s not bad to receive an award, but it shows the fundamental difference between [William and Kate]—who have constitutional roles, who are working on behalf of others—versus being a celebrity.

Source to Page Six

William and Kate were last in America in 2014, on a trip to New York. He reportedly wants the splashiness of coming stateside to maximize publicity for the Earthshot Prize, which will be held in Boston where the Cambridges are basing their charm offensive. “America is your best chance of projecting it internationally,” a source told the Telegraph. “That was the logic behind wanting to do it in Boston.”

Another source told Page Six: “It’s not bad to receive an award, but it shows the fundamental difference between [William and Kate]—who have constitutional roles, who are working on behalf of others—versus being a celebrity. They were always famous, but now they’re reached a different stage in their public lives—they’re different types of figures.”

Harry and Meghan will receive an award at the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Foundation Ripple of Hope Gala in New York.

Kerry Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy’s daughter and president of the foundation, recently told El Confidencial’s Vanitatis magazine that the award was for their “heroic” stance against the “structural racism” of the royal family. “They went to the oldest institution in UK history and told them what they were doing wrong, that they couldn’t have structural racism within the institution; that they could not maintain a misunderstanding about mental health… Few would have the courage to question their colleagues, family and community about the power structure they maintained, and this is what Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have done.”

Charlotte beats Edward to Edinburgh title

King Charles is saving the title Duchess of Edinburgh for Princess Charlotte, Prince William and Kate Middleton’s daughter, the Mail on Sunday reports. This means the title of Duke of Edinburgh won’t go to Prince Edward as had once been anticipated.

A source told the paper: “Discussions are under way, but the favored outcome for the King is that this title ought to go to Princess Charlotte. ‘It would be a fitting way to remember the queen—who, of course, had the title Duchess of Edinburgh—and a way for His Majesty to honor the line of succession.”

Charlotte’s position is historically significant because she is the first female member of the royal family whose place in the line of succession will not be surpassed by her younger brother.

Source to the Mail

Charlotte is third in line to the throne, after her dad and brother Prince George—the rules of royal primogeniture were changed to allow a girl born to the couple the same rights as a boy when Kate was pregnant with Charlotte.

A source said: “Charlotte’s position is historically significant because she is the first female member of the royal family whose place in the line of succession will not be surpassed by her younger brother. So, it is constitutionally significant that Charlotte should be given such a corresponding title, because it is not beyond the realms of possibility that she will accede the throne if, for example, Prince George does not have children.”

Perhaps Edward isn’t that surprised; the lack of movement on the title being bestowed upon him “had not gone unnoticed,” a source told the Mail. Now, Charles is reportedly trying to figure out which title to give him. “It shows you what the King is thinking,” a source told the Mail of the Charlotte move. “It’s about promoting those directly in line to the throne rather than those on the edges.”

Harry: excellent lover, excellent bacon sandwich skills

Catherine, aka Cat, Ommaney, who was one of the stars of the ill-fated Bravo show, The Real Housewives of D.C., has come forward to dish once more on her claims to have had a month-long affair with Prince Harry in 2006, when he was 21 and she 34. It was, she says, “the time of my life.”

Ommaney first spoke of the affair in 2006, but told the Sun that she was dishing again because she didn’t expect the relationship to feature in Harry’s own, much-anticipated memoir, Spare.

“I doubt I will be in Harry’s book as a prince can’t run off with a 34-year-old mother-of-two, it’s just not the done thing, Ommaney told the paper. She was separated from ex-husband Stephen when she and Harry met in a trendy bar in London’s Chelsea in May 2006. At the time, he was dating Chelsy Davy, but Ommaney said she wasn’t sure of they were together at the time.

Ommaney says: “Harry was wearing an Australian-style hat that made me laugh so I asked him, ‘What are you doing looking like a t*** in that?’ I don’t think he was used to people taking the Mickey and once we started talking, it was like there was no one else was in the room,” Ommaney said. “He was only 21 so a relationship was the furthest thing from my mind. But when everyone started leaving at around 11pm, Harry pointed to one of three Range Rovers parked outside and said, ‘Hop in with me,’ which I found very flattering.

“We were driven to Eclipse nightclub in South Kensington and whisked downstairs to the VIP area. A few moments later the manager came over and asked, ‘What is your favorite song?’ Harry said, ‘Gnarls Barkley, Crazy.’ It came on a second later and I said, ‘You are so spoiled.’ Harry just laughed.”

He gave me the most incredible, passionate kiss I have ever had in my life. I was absolutely speechless

Catherine Ommaney

Later in the evening, Ommaney told Harry, “‘I’m starving, do you make a good bacon sandwich?’ He said, ‘I make an excellent bacon sandwich’ and we went back to his friend’s place in Chelsea.”

True to his word on his bacon sandwich-making skills, later Harry “lifted me by my waist off the floor and held me against the wall. He gave me the most incredible, passionate kiss I have ever had in my life. I was absolutely speechless,” said Ommaney.

When the tabloids got wind of the relationship, all communication ceased until they bumped into each other at a polo match in Barbados—because rich people. “Harry pushed past his bodyguards to give me a kiss and a hug and we had a great conversation. In hindsight it’s a shame we couldn’t have remained friends,” Ommaney said.

“If Harry walked through the door here now, he would probably give me a high five and I am sure we will meet again, because the world is a small place. I hope he is happy and has found some freedom finally, because that is something he was desperately searching for back then. I hope Meghan looks after him and I don’t wish him anything other than happiness and success because he is a very brave, charismatic, incredibly funny, intelligent and lovely human being.”

Andrew angry at axing of his police guard

Prince Andrew is set to formally complain after learning his taxpayer-funded police guard is going to be axed. The security costs £3 million ($3.6 million) a year. A source told the Sun on Sunday: “He is going to write to the Home Office and the Met Police to complain about losing his taxpayer-funded security.”

Andrew was stripped of his official royal duties earlier this year in the wake of the Jeffrey Epstein/Virginia Roberts Giuffre scandal. Giuffre claimed Andrew sexually assaulted her three times when she was underage and being sexually trafficked by Epstein. Andrew denied this, but later paid her millions of dollars in an out-of-court settlement.

Ladies-in-waiting—out, ‘Companions’—in

Queen Camilla’s six “companions” have been revealed by the Sunday Times, replacing the traditional role of royal ladies-in-waiting. The latter were with the queen most of the time; Camilla’s will only accompany her to “a few key events each year,” the paper says. They are the Marchioness of Lansdowne, the Hon Lady (Katharine) Brooke, Jane von Westenholz, Sarah Troughton, Lady Sarah Keswick and Baroness “Carlyn” Chisholm.

“Several of them are expected to join the Queen in their new roles for the first time at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday, when Camilla will host a high-profile reception raising awareness of violence against women and girls,” the Times says.

A senior royal source told the paper: “The Queen Consort did not want or need ladies-in-waiting and the queen’s companions will have a different role. They are there to provide Her Majesty with support and company. At the end of a very busy day, it is nice to have a longstanding friend beside you.”

This week in royal history

This week in 2020, the queen was reportedly trying to figure out which royals she could safely spend that Christmas with, because of strict COVID lockdown rules. In the end, the queen and Prince Philip spent December 25 privately at Windsor Castle, the first time in more than 30 years that she was not with her family at the Sandringham estate.

2 boys stabbed to death in Bronx; mother in custody

MOUNT HOPE, The Bronx (WABC) — Two young boys, ages 3-years old-old and 11-months old, were stabbed to death in the Bronx Saturday night, and police say their mother is in custody.

Police say the homicides happened at a family shelter on Echo Place in the Mount Hope section of the Bronx, where the boys were found with multiple stab wounds to the neck and torso.

NYPD hold update on stabbing deaths:

Police first responded to an initial call at 7:30 p.m., when they found the mother inside the apartment on the third floor acting erratically. Sources say the mother then tried to burn the apartment down with the stove and then turned the water on.

Police say the mother, who is a person of interest in the deaths, was taken to the hospital for evaluation and remains in custody.

Less than an hour later, a second 911 call was received, this time reporting two unresponsive children at the same location. Officers returned to the apartment where they found the boys with stab wounds.

Neighbors who live down the hall say they heard the parents of the two young boys arguing and screaming earlier in the night. They also heard the boy’s father crying for help.

“He was screaming hysterically. He was screaming, ‘Help me!’ And I came and opened my door and I see him coming down the hall with the two boys in his arms. They were dead, they were dead. There was blood everywhere,” neighbor Shannon Holyfield said.

Officers and another family member attempted to resuscitate the boys, who were rushed to Columbia Presbyterian Hospital where they were declared dead.

“It’s something that they are going to have to live with and think about probably for the rest of their lives. We have very experienced police officers. I think they are the best. They are able to handle and cope with any situation,” NYPD Deputy Chief Louis De Ceglie said at a news conference Saturday evening.

A memorial was started outside the shelter Sunday morning in memory of the two young victims.

WTF?!?! Buy an iPhone 14 Pro, get a FREE iPad, Apple Watch & Beats headphones!

This is, hands down, THE best Black Friday deal (opens in new tab) we’ve seen so far. In fact, it’s the best Black Friday deal we can ever recall seeing.

Right now Verizon is offering a deal on the iPhone 14 Pro (opens in new tab) that could net you $1,900 of Apple kit, including a 64GB iPad (9th generation) and Apple Watch SE (2nd generation), along with a free pair of Beats Fit Pro headphones!

You can save as much as $1,000 by trading in your old device, and bag another $200 when you make the switch. And if you want to buy another iPhone 14 Pro, you can save an extra $800 and rack up another $200.

You need to sign up to a 5G unlimited plan to maximize this outrageous offer, but really everyone should be going 5G at this point in time – and with so much free stuff and savings, it’s more than worth it.

The process of selecting everything so it all lands in your cart is a little longwinded, but hey – when a deal is this ludicrously good, you’re going to have to work for it a little bit!

If you’re still on the hunt for a new iPhone, iPad, MacBook Pro, or Watch, the best Apple Black Friday deals (opens in new tab) are still going strong.

The iPhone 14 Pro is a serious, pocketable powerhouse. Yes, it’s thick, but its relatively compact footprint and ample camera and power mix make it an enticing option, especially for photographers.

While it’s a shame there’s no pro mode for manual photography, the 14 Pro’s 48MP RAW photos capture excellent results. The automatic mode’s photo processing is also one of the best, if not the best, we’ve seen on a phone. Additionally, while the lack of a periscope zoom is a bugbear when using the Pro, on smaller phones, there’s less of an expectation for a far-reaching zoom.

It’s a mighty phone with a brilliant camera, that’s powerful and lasts a full day. Is it the best camera phone (opens in new tab) of 2022? If you’re an Apple fan who likes more compact phones, absolutely.

Arizona State hires Kenny Dillingham: Oregon offensive coordinator becomes youngest coach in Power Five

Arizona State has hired Oregon offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham as its next football coach, the school announced on Sunday. Dillingham, an Arizona State alum, has overseen a Ducks offense that has fielded one of the most productive units in the country this season, averaging 511.2 yards per game (No. 3 in the FBS), 7.07 yards per play (No. 5 in the FBS) and 40.2 points per game (No. 4 in the FBS).

Dillingham takes over the program after Arizona State fired Herm Edwards earlier this season amid a 1-2 start and ongoing NCAA investigation into illegal recruiting practices during the COVID-19 dead period.

“It is an honor and a privilege to be named the head coach at Arizona State University,” Dillingham said. “This is a special place to myself and my wife who is also a graduate. I truly believe the team we will build here is one that the state of Arizona and all Sun Devils can rally behind and be proud of as it will take everyone in the valley to help this program achieve the level of success it is due. I am excited to get to work and promise no one will work harder than the staff we will put together.”

Though just 32 years old, Dillingham is a Scottsdale native and has risen through the coaching ranks quickly thanks to getting started in the Arizona high school ranks at a young age. He graduated from Arizona State in 2012, and was hired by then-offensive coordinator Mike Norvell to be an offensive staffer for the Sun Devils in 2014. The Norvell relationship continued with assistant stints at Memphis (2016-18) and Florida State (2020-21) with a one-year stop at Auburn in between.

When Oregon coach Dan Lanning arrived as Ducks coach in December 2021, he moved quickly to bring Dillingham on board, knowing his expertise as a former co-worker from their time together at Memphis. The same reasons that Dillingham was such an attractive candidate for the Ducks to pull back out to the Pac-12 as an offensive coordinator also apply to the Sun Devils, who will now turn their program over to a native son in the midst of a much-needed reboot.

“We are proud to announce Kenny Dillingham as our new head football coach,” athletic director Ray Anderson said. “He brings the energy, knowledge and appreciation of our state and university that is valued by all of us,” Anderson said.  “His knowledge of the current college football landscape, learned by coaching across the nation, is needed and wanted at ASU. He will care at the highest level about our state, our alumni, our former players and every single group that is important to help us win. We look forward to working with him and all Sun Devils in making his staff successful and helping our program reach our goals.”

Youth movement in Tempe

Dillingham becomes the youngest active Power Five coach. Interestingly enough, he’s taking that title from Lanning, who was the youngest power conference coach in 2022 at the age of 36. But beyond the notability of his youth, Dillingham’s age also represents a departure in the recent hires by Arizona State for its football program.

He is the fifth head coaching hire since 2001 for the Sun Devils, and in both age and experience, he’s an outlier compared to the previous four. Dennis Erickson (2007-11) and Edwards (2018-22) brought extensive coaching track records and also years of experience. Though both Dirk Koetter (2001-06) and Todd Graham (2012-17) were only in their 40s when they arrived, the resume had a few more references.

But where Dillingham makes up ground for that apparent lack of experience is in the support he carries within the ASU community. Coaching high school football in Scottsdale for more than a half decade has given Dillingham connections that have helped secure this opportunity, and Sun Devils fans are hoping that it will provide a spark to help power the program forward.

NCAA investigation lingering

The NCAA is still investigating the Arizona State football program for alleged violations that occurred during the 2020 offseason. Even before Edwards’ dismissal, the program saw multiple assistants either fired or resign as a result of the program’s illegal recruiting practices during the COVID-19 dead period. The ongoing investigation has been a cloud over the program’s future, and Dillingham and his staff may have to weather some of the fallout.

By investing in someone like Dillingham, who is taking their first job but also has extensive experience in the area, Arizona State would be playing the long game and hoping a native son can lead the program out of the storm to a brighter future.

Opportunity to move up in the Pac-12

With USC and UCLA departing for the Big Ten, the Pac-12 is about to see a shakeup in the supposed pecking order within the conference. These kind of realignment moves can provide an opportunity for programs to jump up and obtain a new status within the conference hierarchy, and though divisions will be gone, it’s very possible that Arizona State can become the strongest presence in the south.

The demographics of Arizona and the Sun Devils’ recruiting base has seen the state’s high school football improve, and Dillingham’s experience from that circuit should allow the program to win some of those battles even against their new Big Ten-based competition. While Oregon and Washington are fighting for supremacy in the Northwest, the door is open for Arizona State, a program with only three Pac-12 championships to its name, to become one of the regular contenders in the conference.
