The Masked Singer US unmasks Raccoon as Brooklyn 99 star

The Masked Singer spoilers follow.

The Masked Singer US is on a roll at the moment, with yet another screen icon being unmasked.

Following on from the show’s impressive Kermit the Frog and Caitlyn Jenner reveals, yesterday’s (March 24) episode of The Masked Singer finally unveiled the celebrity identity of Raccoon.

After an interesting rendition of Johnny Cash’s ‘Ring of Fire’, Raccoon was voted off the competition, leaving Russian Dolls, Robopine, Seashell, and Wildcard contestant Orca to perform for another day.

Not before a pretend strip tease, Raccoon eventually took off their mask, revealing themselves as cult movie staple Danny Trejo.

Trejo – who’s also appeared in Breaking Bad and as Rosa Diaz’s father in Brooklyn Nine-Nine – told Entertainment Weekly that his time on The Masked Singer had been “the cutest thing in the world”.

“I’ve never done anything like that,” he admitted. “I’m definitely not a singer. I can’t carry a tune in a bucket. But when I saw the costume, I have a little Schnauzer dog named John Wesley Harding, that looks exactly like that raccoon. Same colouring, same eyes.

“So I got to do this, you know. Everybody thought I was being a raccoon, but really I was being John Wesley Harding, my Schnauzer.”

Opening up about how he felt portraying Raccoon, Danny Trejo said that he felt “free” to “just play a Raccoon”, rather than keep up his image of being a “tough” guy.

“It’s funny, but no matter who you are – it’s like my image on screen is being tough, bad, nobody to mess with,” he said. “But when you have this costume on, it’s like none of that is you. A tough Raccoon would not have looked good. So you’re free, and I could just play a Raccoon.”

The Masked Singer US airs on Fox, while its UK equivalent airs on ITV.
