The next Nintendo Direct ‘will focus on third-party games’, it’s claimed

The Nintendo Direct [203 articles]” href=”https://www.videogameschronicle.com/events/e3/e3-2019/nintendo-direct/”>Nintendo Direct expected to take place next week will reportedly focus on third-party games.

That’s according to experienced journalist Nacho Requena, editor of Spanish games magazine Manual, who told viewers during a Twitch stream on Friday that he’d been told to expect new announcements from major publishers.

“We should have a Nintendo Direct this coming Tuesday,” Requena said during the live stream, translated by VGC. “This will be mainly focused on third-party games – that’s what I’ve been told to expect.

“I’ve also been told that some Persona game will be present, though I don’t know which game,” they added. “I’ve also been told there will be another game that has been available for some time on other platforms… it’s been available for four years now.”

Requena’s ‘four-year-old’ port claim would fit with a previous claim that Rockstar Games [262 articles]” href=”https://www.videogameschronicle.com/companies/take-two-interactive/rockstar-games/”>Rockstar was planning to bring Red Dead Redemption 2 [144 articles]” href=”https://www.videogameschronicle.com/games/red-dead-redemption-2/”>Red Dead Redemption 2 – released in 2018 – to Nintendo Switch [2,692 articles]” href=”https://www.videogameschronicle.com/platforms/nintendo/switch/”>Switch.

Another games writer first claimed earlier this month that a Nintendo Direct is set to take place next week, which VGC’s own sources corroborated at the time.

Nintendo [2,771 articles]” href=”https://www.videogameschronicle.com/platforms/nintendo/”>Nintendo first introduced ‘Nintendo Direct Mini: Partner Showcase’ presentations during the pandemic, featuring content entirely from its development and publishing partners.

Four such live streams were held during 2020, but none in the years since.

Much of Nintendo’s first-party games for the remainder of 2022 appear to have been revealed. The company broadcasted a Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Direct last week, while The Pokémon Company [142 articles]” href=”https://www.videogameschronicle.com/companies/the-pokemon-company/”>The Pokémon Company has been holding its own streams for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet [14 articles]” href=”https://www.videogameschronicle.com/games/pokemon/pokemon-scarlet-and-violet/”>Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

The last Nintendo Direct was held in February 2022 and focused on games due for release in the first half of the year.

During that presentation, Nintendo revealed Mario Strikers: Battle League, Nintendo Switch Sports, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 and Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes.

It also revealed the Booster Course Pass for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which promised that 48 tracks would be released in eight waves over course of the following two years.

Google’s Pixel 5 was the last of its kind

From time to time, I’ll grab a random device out of the Verge reviews closet and spend a week or two with it. It’s mostly out of random curiosity and for the sake of comparing “old” products against the latest and greatest. Most recently, I was drawn to Google’s Pixel 5. So I gave it a factory reset, updated the phone to Android 12, and have been using it as my daily driver for the past several days.

The experience has been fantastic. I’ve got very large hands — an iPhone 13 Pro Max doesn’t look out of place in them — and I prefer large screens, so I don’t think I could fully switch over to the Pixel 5. But it’s such a good “small” phone (by 2022 standards) that I’ve certainly been tempted. The Pixel 5 makes it easy to do anything I need one-handed. Its midrange processor performs better than ever on Android 12, and this phone still looks unique next to the competition.

Above all else, I’ve come away disappointed that Google gave up on the Pixel 5’s style and size after just one year. The smallest phone in the company’s lineup is currently the Pixel 5a, which has a 6.3-inch display. To its credit, Google is shrinking things down slightly with the upcoming 6A. But with the A-series models, you’re giving up niceties like the 90Hz display and wireless charging. In those ways, the Pixel 5 might be the last of its kind in Google’s lineup. So much for the even bezels, too.

The Pixel 5 is smaller than both the Pixel 5A and 6A — with more premium hardware to boot.
Image: Google

I now find myself wishing that Google would keep the 5 around as an “iPhone SE”-style product that gets brought up to speed with hardware upgrades every couple years — without losing what makes it good. Let’s cover some of the Pixel 5’s strengths.

Design and materials: The Pixel 5’s 6-inch OLED display is surrounded by thin, symmetrical bezels that go a long way in making the phone comfortable and usable in one hand. And the textured “bio resin” coating on the 5’s body results in a unique feel and reassuring grip when you’re holding it throughout the day. The volume rocker shares this texture, while the power button is glossy metal — making it easy to distinguish between the two by touch. Owing to its feel and palm-able size, the Pixel 5 is one of those phones that can go caseless without causing much consternation.

Before Google went all in on the common “glass sandwich” design with the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, previous models in the series often used distinctive materials and textures that helped the phones stand out. With the Pixel 2, it was the almost-coarse rear shell of the black model. The Pixel 4 had grippy side rails. But after the 5’s bio resin — I’m still a big fan of the Sorta Sage green colorway with this finish — Google opted for a more basic in-hand feel with last year’s flagships.

The Pixel 5’s bio resin finish makes for a unique in-hand feel.

A better screen: The Pixel 6’s OLED panel might seem perfectly fine based on first impressions. But in all honesty, it’s mediocre. There are plenty of threads on Reddit complaining about uniformity issues, an unsightly green tint at lower brightness levels, and other imperfections. The Pixel 6 Pro’s gorgeous LPTO panel exhibits none of these problems, so it’s clear that Google settled for less as part of reaching the 6’s $599 price.

Even the Pixel 5’s screen seems of a slightly higher quality to me than the 6 that replaced it. They’re both 90Hz displays, but the 5’s white point, uniformity, and overall image are just a bit nicer to my eyes. This can sometimes come down to variance between individual units, but I hope to see better from the Pixel 7.

Pixel Imprint rear fingerprint sensor: I’m still let down that phone makers decided in unison to relocate the fingerprint reader from the back of the phone, where your index finger often naturally rests while holding it, to underneath the display. Google’s Pixel Imprint scanners were perhaps the fastest and most consistent in the entire Android ecosystem, and, well, let’s just say the in-screen sensor on the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro has never matched it — even after Google improved the performance through software updates.

Consistent camera performance: Google spent several years optimizing its computational photography for the 12-megapixel main camera shared by the Pixel 5 and its predecessors. And while it lacks the dynamic range of the Pixel 6 / 6 Pro and doesn’t offer features like Real Tone or Magic Eraser, the Pixel 5 is a consistent shooter. You know what you’re going to get, which can’t always be said of the Pixel 6 line. I don’t love the unpleasant-looking background blur you sometimes get from the 6’s larger sensor, but this is something Google will no doubt improve.

The Pixel 6A will soon be Google’s smallest phone.
Image: Google

The Pixel 5 isn’t perfect

Although I’m mostly satisfied with the smooth performance and general responsiveness of the Pixel 5 on Android 12, there are still occasions where the midrange Snapdragon 765G processor hits a wall and gets bogged down. Snap a photo, and the frustrating delay while the phone processes the shot remains present. The 5 can also get hung up if you get overly ambitious with multitasking.

While I’m sold on the Pixel 5’s look and feel, Google’s hardware quality assurance isn’t always the best. Many units have a slight gap between the display and body. After the phone’s release, the company said the gap wasn’t anything to worry about — but it’s exactly the sort of minor detail that I find annoying.

And then there’s that dreadful under-screen speaker, which still sounds tinny in most cases even after Google tried to improve it with an “adaptive sound” setting. Those symmetrical bezels didn’t come without tradeoffs.

But even with those downsides factored in, there’s still something special about this phone. I’ve come close to buying one from Woot, which is selling new, unopened Pixel 5s for $450. Apparently Google must’ve stumbled across some extra inventory in a warehouse somewhere. With Apple’s mini iPhone rumored to be cut from the upcoming iPhone 14 lineup, it seems small phones are on the way out (again). That makes this a tempting moment to buy. The only asterisk to consider in Google’s case is that software support for the Pixel 5 will end in October 2023.

But maybe by then, Google will reintroduce a small Pixel that doesn’t skimp on hardware features and doesn’t so blandly take after its larger siblings.

AirPods Pro 2: Design, features, release date, price, more

Apple is set to release AirPods Pro 2 in 2022. This new generation is rumored to bring a new design, innovative Lossless support, as well as fitness sensors for the first time. Head below as we round up the latest rumors about this product.

AirPods Pro 2: New form factor?

By the beginning of 2022, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported that AirPods Pro 2 would feature a new form factor design closer to the 2021 Beats Fit Pro. With that, these wireless earbuds would lose their sterns by likely featuring an in-ear wingtip design.

If that’s the case, AirPods’ charging case would also be tweaked. Rumors believe it will remain 21mm thick, while it will be 46mm tall and 54mm wide. For comparison’s sake, the current AirPods Pro charging case measures 45.2mm tall and 60.6mm wide.

Then in June, a new leak by 52audio, which correctly predicted the AirPods 3 design, shows that AirPods Pro 2 will likely feature a similar design to the current generation, but with a tweak on the ear tips.

Features

Lossless support

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo was also the first to report that Apple is planning to bring Lossless support to the AirPods Pro 2. He wrote back in January:

We expect Apple to launch AirPods Pro 2 in 4Q22 with new selling points, including a new form factor design, support for Apple Lossless (ALAC) format, and a charging case that can emit a sound for users to track. We are optimistic about the demand for AirPods Pro 2 and estimate shipments will reach 18–20mn units in 2022.

By the end of 2021, AirPods’ creator addressed the limitations of Bluetooth in an interview. Gary Geaves, Apple’s VP of Acoustics, has said that Apple would really like a wireless standard that allows for more bandwidth.

“Obviously the wireless technology is critical for the content delivery that you talk about,” he says, “so we have to concentrate very hard on squeezing the most that we can out of the Bluetooth technology, and there’s a number of tricks we can play to maximize or get around some of the limits of Bluetooth. But it’s fair to say that we would like more bandwidth and… I’ll stop right there. We would like more bandwidth”, he smiles.

If analyst Ming-Chi Kuo is right, Apple is probably adopting a new standard to offer Lossless support with AirPods Pro 2.

New chip and low-energy Bluetooth support

9to5Mac sources confirm that the next-generation AirPods Pro – codenamed B698 – will feature the next version of the H1 chip, Apple’s own audio processor. In addition, references for LC3 codec support on the AirPods Max beta firmware tease that AirPods Pro 2 could be the first to add Bluetooth 5.2 support.

This codec will bring more stability and efficiency to the wireless earbuds. Not only that, but this new standard will help AirPods Pro 2 improve the sound quality for voice calls and songs with higher-bitrate support. Although low-energy Bluetooth and LC3 codec don’t promise “Lossless Bluetooth,” it will surely improve sound quality by a lot.

Health sensors

Kuo also believes that “AirPods may support health management functions in the future,” corroborating previous reports.

A study led by Apple shows how AirPods could be used to monitor respiratory rate. The study found that this audio can be a “viable signal for passively estimating” respiratory rates, also making it a more cost-effective way of doing so compared to traditional healthcare.

Bloombergs Mark Gurman also believes that Airpods Pro 2 will have new fitness tracking features:

Apple has been testing a new design with an even shorter stern or no stern at all, plus new motion sensor for fitness.

In addition, it would not be as surprising if Apple adds health-tracking features as an indie developer released an app that tells whether your posture is good using AirPods’ sensors. Pretty neat, right?

Lightning or USB-C connector?

In May, Kuo predicted that the AirPods Pro 2 charging case will still feature a Lightning port for charging, dashing hopes for a switchover to USB-C this year.

Kuo reported in May that Apple is currently testing the iPhone 15 with a USB-C port for charging. The analyst also predicted that when (or if) the iPhone switches to USB-C charging, Apple will also transition AirPods and other accessories to USB-C.

In June, 52audio speculated that the updated charging case for the AirPods Pro 2 will switch to USB-C based on its leaked images, as you can see here.

When will Apple release AirPods Pro 2?

How much will AirPods Pro 2 cost?

As of now, rumors don’t account for AirPods Pro 2 pricing. Currently, the first generation costs $249. If Apple adds new health sensors to this product + Lossless support, it’s likely that Apple could increase its price tag up to $50.

It’s also important to take a look at the company’s strategy with AirPods 3. Kuo described it as a “failed product segmentation strategy,” by saying Apple will likely discontinue AirPods Pro when launching the new model.

AirPods 3 orders for 2-3Q22 have been cut by 30%+. Due to the failed product segmentation strategy, demand for AirPods 3 is significantly weaker than for AirPods 2. AirPods Pro may get discontinued after Apple launches AirPods Pro 2 in 2H22 to avoid repeating the same mistake.

Wrap-up

There’s a lot to be excited about the new AirPods Pro 2. If rumors turn out to be true, expect Lossless playback, a new form factor, and health and fitness sensors.

That said, if you don’t think you’ll need all of these features, this could be the perfect moment to buy the original AirPods Pro, AirPods Max, and even Apple’s 20W charger.

T1 Faker: “Nowadays, I spend every single hour of my time researching the game.”

On day 9 of the 2022 LCK Summer split, T1 faced off against DWG KIA in the first match of the day. Despite many predictions of a closer series between the two titans, T1 managed to 2-0 DWG KIA, a victory that marked their 24-match win streak in the LCK. They beat their old record of 23 match wins, a milestone that was set in 2015.

The following is a post-match interview with Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok.

Thoughts on the victory tonight against DWG KIA?

Tonight’s match was an important one, so I’m really happy that we were able to shut them out 2-0 tonight.

One of the reasons why tonight’s matchup was so hyped up was due to whether or not the team can break their old record of 23-match win streak. How do you feel about breaking that milestone tonight?

The 24 match win streak doesn’t feel too big, especially because the record was set such a long time ago. The reason why I didn’t think too much about the milestone back then was because I actually didn’t know I set that record a long time ago. However, at the same time, setting such a record is a great feeling.

There must be a lot of factors that contribute to such a massive milestone.

I think that we’re a bit ahead of other teams in terms of our macro game. There’s a lot of luck involved as well. However, I don’t think we’re miles ahead of other teams.

What’s your secret behind maintaining such a high level of gameplay for such a long time?

I constantly thought about how I can be better since my debut. Nowadays, I spend every single hour of my time researching the game, so I think that translated to great results.

You also talked about winning the split undefeated in an earlier interview.

I felt that tonight’s match against DWG KIA was a critical one; after playing them tonight, I felt that we can win the Summer split undefeated as well. If we do, it’ll be another fun milestone.

Is there anything specific the team prepared for tonight’s series?

Everyone on our team put in an incredible number of hours practicing. I think that we won because we were ahead of DWG KIA in our overall play.

You picked Galio twice tonight. How come?

I put in a lot of research on how we’re going to counter Twisted Fate.

Lastly, is there anything you’d like to say?

We’ve set another huge record tonight. More than anything, however, the goal for Summer split is to show a better version of ourselves than that of MSI. I want to thank the fans for their support, and we’ll make sure to continue winning.

PSA: PS Plus Extra, Premium Games Removed from Service Aren’t Yours to Keep Forever

Image: Push Square

We recently reported on a couple of games featured in PS Plus Extra and PS Plus Premium that will be leaving the service fairly soon. This caused a little confusion, as many believed that the huge libraries of games in the new tiers would be accessible forever, so long as you stay subscribed and download them to your PS5 or PS4. To be perfectly clear, that is not the case.

If a game is removed from PS Plus Extra or Premium, it will no longer be available to play — even if you’ve claimed it.

Sony did confirm this detail in its PS Blog guide to the new PS Plus, making the following statement: “Similar to PlayStation Now, if the content is no longer offered on PlayStation Plus, you won’t be able to access the titles when they leave the service”.

As it says, PS Now worked on the same basis. Once a game was taken out of the service, it became inaccessible even to those who had streamed or downloaded it. It’s the exact same for PS Plus Extra and Premium.

However, PS Plus Essential’s monthly games, as well as titles in the PS Plus Collection, will remain accessible when they cycle out of the service, as long as you’ve added them to your library.

If you’re still not sure how things stack up, we’d recommend keeping tabs on our list of All PS Plus Games. This page contains all the information you need about every game on all tiers, including when they join and any upcoming expiry dates. Bungie reiterates support for reproductive rights as US Supreme Court overturns Roe v Wade

UPDATE 25/6/22: Many more video game companies – including Xbox, Bethesda, Ubisoft, and Humble Bundle – have spoken out in support of abortion rights following the US supreme court’s decision to overturn Roe v Wade.

Following statements from the likes of Insomniac Games and Sucker Punch, Sony developers including Bend Studio and London Studio have posted similar support, saying, “Reproductive freedom and bodily autonomy are human rights”.

The Last of Us developer Naughty Dog shared a lengthier message on Twitter, saying it “believes reproductive freedom and bodily autonomy are basic human rights and essential to the health and wellbeing of everyone.”

“We will continue to uphold those values and actively support all our employees in receiving the care they need and want”, it added. God of War studio Sony Santa Monica has released a similarly worded message.

Away from Sony, other major publishers have made their own statements in support of reproductive rights.

A statement shared on Xbox’s official Twitter feed read, “At Xbox, we remain committed to our employees to ensure equal access to healthcare. We will continue to do everything we can under the law to support our employees and enrolled dependents in accessing critical healthcare.” It added, “Our US health plans cover lawful medical services like abortion and gender-affirming care, and we recently extended our travel benefits to include travel expense support assistance for covered medical services.”

Other Microsoft-owned studios shared similar sentiments. “We believe the ability to make choices about one’s body and lifestyle is a human right”, said Bethesda in a short statement on Twitter, while Double Fine – one of the first studios to speak out following initial reports of the Supreme Court’s plans last month – wrote, “Overturning Roe v Wade constitutes a direct assault on people’s safety and rights. Your body is your body. We encourage donations to local funds/organisations that will stand up for these rights”.

Ubisoft wrote, “We fully support our teams in the US. Today and every day, we believe that reproductive rights are humans rights, women’s rights are human rights, trans rights are human rights, and equal rights for all are essential to a world where everyone can be their authentic selves and thrive.”

EA – which came in for criticism last month after it reportedly declined employee requests to make a public statement in support of reproductive rights and trans rights – also shared a statement, albeit one that stopped short of directly referencing reproductive rights or bodily autonomy. “Our support is unwavering for our people,” it wrote on Twitter. “We are committed to expanding our benefits for US employees and their eligible dependents – our aim is to provide the care, support and services for the health and well-being of our people.” Apex Legends developer Respawn shared an identical statement on its own account.

EA-owned studio Maxis was a little more forthright on its Sims 4 account, writing, “We understand today is hard. For those who play The Sims, the game has always been about being who you want to be, loving who you want to love, and creating the life you want to live. Our game is a reflection of our unwavering belief that everyone has a right to choose how they want to live their life without judgment, including the right to bodily autonomy.” It also provided a list of resources for those requiring support.

Other developers and publishers have also spoken out. Devolver Digital shared a simple, direct, “Reproductive rights are human rights.”, while Among Us developer Innersloth opted for a longer message. “Innersloth supports reproductive choice and liberty,” it wrote. “The ending of the constitutional right to abortion is a gender, racial, economic, and human rights disaster for both present and future generations. There are so many people and local organisations to support. If you can, lend them your voice, time, action, money, or privilege. We stand with everyone affected”.

It shared links to a number of those organisations, including Abortion Funds, The Brigid Alliance, Trans Lifeline, In Our Own Voice, and Plan C.

Humble Bundle, as part of a lengthy statement, pledged to use its platform and community to support charities connected with reproductive rights and liberty in the coming weeks. “Today’s Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v Wade severely undermines the rights all people should have to make decisions about their bodies and their health and welfare,” it wrote. “Reproductive freedom and bodily autonomy are fundamental human rights, period.”

“We’re committed to ensuring that all of Humble’s employees have access to safe, affordable and essential health care, including reimbursement for travel that may be needed as a consequence of today’s decision,” it continued.

“We are also working on ways that our platform and community can support charities that are committed to standing up for reproductive choice and liberty.

“We will have more to share in the coming weeks, but in the meantime, we encourage the Humble community to donate directly to organisations dedicated to fighting for these rights, including Center for Reproductive Rights, Guttmacher Institute, NARAL Pro-Choice America Foundation, or Planned Parenthood, if possible”.

Expect more companies to speak out, and pledge support and assistance for its employees, as the fallout from the US Supreme Court’s decision continues.

ORIGINAL STORY 14/6/22: Bungie and a number of PlayStation studios, including Insoniac and Sucker Punch, have spoken out in support of reproductive rights following today’s decision by the US Supreme Court to overturn key legislation granting individuals the constitutional right to choose an abortion – a move that gives US states the power to either severely restrict or ban the practice.

Bungie was one of the first studios to make a statement in May after the US Supreme Court’s plans to overthrow Roe v Wade were leaked to the press, calling the move a “direct attack on human rights”. Adding to that sentiment in a new statement shared today, it said, “Standing up for reproductive choice and liberty is not a difficult decision to make, and Bungie remains dedicated to upholding these values.”

“Last month, we stated without reservation that all of us deserve to choose our own path and access the healthcare we need,” the developer continued. “The decision by the US Supreme Court to overturn Roe v Wade cuts off millions of Americans from that access and leaves open the possibility of even further restrictions on life-saving healthcare for all of us.”

Bungie also reiterated its commitment to “ensuring that everyone of our employees and their families have safe and affordable access to essential healthcare needs”, and noted that, as it continues to expand it digital-first workplace to more states, it “will now be implementing a travel reimbursement program for any employee to use when they or a dependent cannot get access to the healthcare they need where they live”.

“We remain undeterred in our commitment to stand up for reproductive choice and liberty,” the developer concluded.

Alongside Bungie, a number of key PlayStation studios have released statements in reponse to today’s Supreme Court ruling. Spider-Man and Ratchet & Clank developer Insomniac Games wrote, “We are human beings who make games. Reproductive freedom and bodily autonomy are human rights.” Dreams developer Media Molecule and Ghost of Tsushima studio Sucker Punch shared similar messages on their own Twitter accounts, saying “Reproductive freedom and bodily autonomy are human rights.”

Public support from these developers is particularly notable in that a Washington Post report last month claimed Sony was refusing to approve any statements its PlayStation studios might want to make on the topic of reproductive rights. Insomniac head Ted Price was said to have told staff he believed “there would be material repercussions” if the studio chose to go against Sony’s wishes. In response to that report, Bungie – whose acquisition by Sony was announced in February – said “there will never be a ‘muzzle’ big enough to stop us from standing up for what’s right”. It would appear Sony may have chosen to reverse its alleged policy since then.

Concluding its latest statement, Bungie shared a list of organisations that support rights to healthcare, for those wishing to donate:

Stardew Valley Creator Working On Version 1.6, Includes “Some New Content”

Although Eric ‘ConcernedApe’ Barone is now hard at work on his next game Haunted Chocolatier, he’s not completely done with the lifestyle-farming simulation Stardew Valley.

In a brief exchange with a fan on social media, Barone was asked if Stardew would receive any future updates such as Version 1.6 and 1.7. While he’s not so sure about Version 1.7, he did confirm Version 1.6 is on the way. It will “mostly be” a mod-focused update but will also contain some new content. Just don’t expect too much.

“1.6, yes. But it’s mostly a modding-focused update (makes modders lives easier). There will be some new content but it won’t be huge. 1.7? Who knows.”

Barone was also asked about Haunted Chocolatier containing references to Stadew Valley. He confirmed there would be some links, but he’s still not sure “how deep” the connection will be between the two games.

What would you like to see from a future Stardew Valley update? Comment down below.

Sony Launches New PS Store Credit Vouchers for PS Plus

Image: Push Square

Earlier in the month, it was reported that Sony was discontinuing its traditional digital PS Plus vouchers. These allowed you to purchase one month, three month, or 12 month memberships from third-party retailers, which you could then redeem on your account in order to extend your subscription. Occasionally, these would be discounted.

On the official PlayStation website, it was directing customers towards PS Store credit, which you can obviously use to purchase subscription time. Now, with the service available in Europe, it’s released some new wallet top-up denominations specifically for its revamped PS Plus tiers. Major UK retailers like Shop To and Amazon UK now allow you to purchase £84 of PS Store credit, which is the cost of PS Plus Extra for a year.

There are also rebranded options available in the US, like $110, which is the price of PS Plus Extra and tax. We’re not convinced this format is as clean as the old option, where you just bought how much subscription time you wanted and didn’t need to worry about PS Store credit, but we suppose with three tiers on offer, this is ultimately more manageable for retail displays.

Anyway, that’s the situation right now: PS Plus specific vouchers are out, but rebranded PS Store wallet top-ups are in.

Action Launcher gets massive free update – 9to5Google

Action Launcher has been around for a very long time. In that time, the popular Android add-on saw many users. Unfortunately, many features were pay-to-play, leaving the very basic features to those who chose not to pay. Fortunately, Action Launcher v50 takes a wrecking ball to that paywall and makes a few other key changes.

Whenever the topic of third-party launchers comes up, Action Launcher is usually one of the main names to be spoken. The launcher has a reputation for being the standard across Android. Of course, the app has seen a lot of improvements over the years to match some of the key ones made by Google. The problem in recent years, though, has been the plight of the free user.

In the past, those who’ve wanted to use the launcher without paying got a couple of features, but nothing to write home about. The developers know this. In fact, this was the driving force behind the changes made in v50.

Action Launcher’s freemium implementation has historically been terrible. It was far too aggressive in pushing people to purchase the Plus upgrade, which turned a great many people off, and the app was barely usable for nonpaying customers.

With v50, Chris Lacy said Action Launcher is set to be an experience built for everyone, whether you pay or not. To add to that, v50 brings a better search system that plays off the Pixel Launcher. Action Search gives you better results from the web and your device as well as some Action Launcher settings that can be toggled right from the homescreen.

In addition to Action Search and more free features, Action Launcher’s native settings are being tweaked. The app is adding a settings search bar as well as shortcuts to recently changed settings. The latter is exciting for those who like to head back and forth between the settings page adjusting toggles for hours on end.

In all, the new changes coming in Action Launcher v50 and onward are exciting ones, especially for free users. Action Launcher v50 is rolling out now to Android users and will be available on the Google Play Store.
