Fortnite Offering Refunds on New Skin

Earlier this week, Epic Games released a pair of new Terminator skins for Fortnite, and the publisher is now offering refunds to those that purchased the T-800. The official Fortnite website indicated that the skin was accompanied by a built-in Cyberdyne Salute emote. That is not the case, which may have prompted some complaints from players. Epic’s official Fortnite Status Twitter account has reported that players will be able to apply for one using the in-game flow. A specific date that players can start to get that refund has not been announced, but it will be available sometime next week.

The Tweet from Epic Games can be found embedded below.

The Cyberdyne Salute emote is meant to evoke the T-800’s final moments in Terminator 2: Judgement Day, where the character took a molten steel bath to ensure its own destruction and protect the future. The original trailer released by Epic Games announcing the content featured an homage to that moment, but this time around, T-800 is stopped by Jonesy, who pulls it into the world of Fortnite to enlist its help.

Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 5 has a theme focused on the greatest hunters of the multiverse. T-800 and Sarah Connor are the latest such “hunters” added this season, following Din Djarin (The Mandalorian), Kratos (God of War), Master Chief (Halo), and Predator. There have been a number of rumors regarding future hunters, including Tom Raider star Lara Croft. Epic Games has been steadily adding new skins since the season kicked off last month, so fans likely won’t have to wait much longer to see which character will make the cut next!

Fortnite is currently available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. You can check out all of our previous coverage of the game right here.

Hackers Leak Data of 2.28 Million MeetMindful Users

Photo: Kirill Kudryavtsev/AFP (Getty Images)

Millions of users of the dating site MeetMindful got some unpleasant news on Sunday. ZDNet reported that the hacker group ShinyHunters, the same group who leaked millions of user records for the company that listed the “Camp Auschwitz” shirts, has dumped what appears to be data from the dating site’s user database. The leak purportedly contains the sensitive information of more than 2.28 million of the site’s registered users.

According to ZDNet, the 1.2 gigabyte file was shared as a free download “on a publicly accessible hacking forum known for its trade in hacked databases.” It included troves of sensitive and identifiable user information, including real names, email addresses, city, state, and ZIP code details, birth dates, IP addresses, Facebook user IDs, and Facebook authentication tokens, among others. Messages, however, were not exposed.

The outlet, which included screenshots of the file posted to the hacker forum as well as a small sample of the data exposed, highlights that not all the leaked accounts include the user’s full details. Nonetheless, it stated that the information leaked could be used to link individuals’ dating profiles to their real-world identities. The hacking forum where the data was posted has been viewed more than 1,500 times. Per the outlet, it is still available for download.

ZDNet said it was informed of the leak by a security researcher, who it did not name, earlier this week. It added that it had contacted MeetMindful on Thursday to ask for a comment on the matter but had not received a response for days.

Gizmodo has also gotten in touch with MeetMindful to ask it about the reported hack. We’ll make sure to update this blog if we hear back.

According to its Crunchbase profile, MeetMindful is a dating site platform for “people who are into health, well-being, and mindfulness.” It was founded in 2013, is based in Denver, Colorado, and is still active.

Here’s where it starts to get a little strange, though. The site’s listed social media channels have been inactive for months, which is interesting considering that major dating apps have been growing during the pandemic. I mean, don’t they want to encourage their users to date (safely)? From the outside, the service seems like dead zone. Who knows though, it could be all the rage inside the site itself.

It is unclear whether MeetMindful has notified its users of the incident. If it’s true, users need to know so that they can be on the lookout for suspicious activity and change logins and passwords if necessary. Bottom line: Get moving.

ROH books two title fights

Ring of Honor is making their champions stay active. New contenders for Dragon Lee’s ROH TV Championship and Jonathan Gresham’s ROH Pure Championship have been announced.

First on the docket is Pure gold. Gresham and ROH Dojo coach Will Ferrara wanted to reward their students with an opportunity to earn a title shot. They proposed to the ROH board of directors that Joe Keys, Dante Caballero, Ken Dixon, and Eric Martin participate in a gauntlet match with the winner getting ranked #3 and receiving a Pure Championship contest against Gresham.

That bout took place on ROH Week by Week (starting at 16:25). Dixon defeated Martin via powerslam in the opening round. Caballero eliminated Dixon on a crucifix pin variation in the second round. Dixon demonstrated poor sportsmanship with an attack to Caballero after his loss. Caballero rallied back despite the pain, but Keys came out on top with an elevated single leg crab to win the gauntlet. Keys will get his chance against Gresham on next weekend’s TV episode of ROH Wrestling.

Dragon Lee is fresh off a successful TV title defense against Rey Horus, and Brian Johnson is fresh off signing a new contract with ROH. Now, the two will go one-on-one at a date to be announced. Johnson earned the opportunity by winning a fan poll as part of ROH The Experience.

ROH Week by Week also updated the singles rankings.

ROH World Television Championship
5. Bandido
4. LSG
3. Kenny King
2. Dak Draper
1. Tony Deppen
Champ: Dragon Lee

Rey Horus’ loss to Dragon Lee gave him the boot. Bandido entered at #5. Everyone else moved up one spot accordingly.

ROH Pure Championship
5. Fred Yehi
4. Rhett Titus
3. Joe Keys
2. Josh Woods
1. Tracy Williams
Champ: Jonathan Gresham

Flip Gordon was suspended from the Pure division after not respecting the rules in his win against Rhett Titus. Josh Woods moved up one spot, and Joe Keys entered at #3.

ROH World Championship
5. Jay Briscoe
4. Mark Haskins
3. Matt Taven
2. Brody King
1. Shane Taylor
Champ: Rush

This is the debut of the world title rankings. All signs point to Shane Taylor being next in line for Rush, most likely at an ROH PPV. Mark Haskins and Flip Gordon both have previous title shots yet to be cashed in.

Would you bet any money on an upset victory from Joe Keys or Brian Johnson? Do you agree with the current rankings?

Microsoft Wants To Build Chatbots Out Of Dead People’s Data

Image: Star Wars: Rogue One

Black Mirror is satire. I thought we were all on the same page with this.

As The Independent report, Microsoft has been granted a patent on some tech that would allow the company to use people’s (or even fictional people’s) online footprint, looking for stuff like “images, voice data, social media posts [and] electronic messages”, and then build a chatbot out of it.

There are also provisions for people being able to train a bot made of themselves.

The patented technology would be able to create the bot out of either a “past or present entity”. The latter is problematic in its own right, since there are ten bad reasons for every good one when it comes to simulating a conversation with a person who, by virtue of being alive, could be doing the talking for themselves.

And the former is just…look, this kind of stuff has been and will forever be incredibly fucked up. Let the dead rest, and spare the living the torment.

Red Dead Online Leak Potentially Reveals Big Upcoming Update

A new Red Dead Online leak is making the rounds that possibly reveals what is coming to the popular video game later this year. Since it released Red Dead Online in Beta a month after Red Dead Redemption 2, Rockstar Games has been relatively slow to support it, especially compared to GTA Online, which clearly has priority due to its larger number of players. However, it looks like Rockstar may be cooking up some big things for the online western such as bank robberies and more

Over on YouTube, Silentc0re relays word of some new files added to the game with the recent update. Of course, this by itself isn’t notable nor exciting, but the content of these files have players talking. For one, brand new files for various driveable boats have been found in the files. Meanwhile, there are files that range from new to newly updated that point to bank robberies coming to the game, including files with assets for money bonds, jewelry bags, safes, strong boxes. Of course, bank robberies are something players have been begging for since launch, and it’s something you’d assume Rockstar Games will eventually add, especially considering how popular heists are in GTA Online.

Lastly, there are files that seem to indicate that Rockstar Games has been doing work involving Guarma, the island from the game’s campaign. Right now, the speculation is that a legendary bounty could take players back to the island, much like the Cayo Perico update takes players to an island that is locked to just the mission.

That said, right now, there’s some contention over the leak, with some suggesting these files have been in the game since before launch, which in turn suggests they are nothing more than cut content. However, this wouldn’t explain why Rockstar Games is updating them.

For now, take everything here with a grain of salt. While datamining leaks are typically quite reliable, they can routinely spawn false conclusions and misconceptions.

At the moment of publishing, Rockstar Games has not commented on this leak in any capacity nor has it revealed what it has in store for the game for this year. If either of these things change, we will be sure to update the story. In the meantime, for more coverage on all things Red Dead Redemption 2, click here.

Everything You Need to Know About Mareep Incense Day

Pokemon Go‘s latest Incense Day is here to celebrate the arrival of Mega Ampharos into the popular mobile title. From 11 AM to 5 PM local time today, either Dragon-type or Electric-type Pokemon will spawn when you have Incense active. Additionally, Electric-type Pokemon will appear via Incense spawns from 11 AM to 1 PM and from 2 PM to 4 PM while Dragon-type Pokemon will appear via Incense spawns from 1 PM and 2 PM and from 4 PM to 5 PM. Additionally, Mareep will appear more often overall from Incense during the entire event. To help players participate in the Incense Day event, Pokemon Go is selling 3 Incense for 1 Poke Coin.

In addition to Mareep appearing more often during the event, any Ampharos evolved during the event will know the move Dragon Pulse, a move that it previously could only learn during a 2018 Community Day. Dragon Pulse is particularly handy when Ampharos Mega Evolves, as Mega Ampharos is an Electric/Dragon-type Pokemon and would gain a same type attack bonus when using the attack.

Pokemon confirmed to appear during the Incense Event includes: Pikachu, Magnemite, Voltorb, Chinchou, Mareep, Plusle, Minun, Stunfisk, Horsea, Dratini, Trapinch, Vibrava, Swablu, and Bagon. Note that Plusle, Minun, and Bagon are all needed to complete the Hoenn Celebration Event’s Collection Challenge.

In addition to today’s Incense Day, Pokemon Go is also hosting the aforementioned Hoenn Celebration Event, which features increased spawns of various Pokemon from the Hoenn region. This includes the addition of Groudon and Kyogre in 5-Star Raids through tomorrow, Monday January 25th. The game will then jump into a Johto Celebration event that will give players the opportunity to have certain Pokemon evolve to learn moves that were previously exclusive to older Community Days. All of these Celebration Events are leading towards the ticketed Pokemon Go Tour: Kanto event, which gives players a chance to capture Shiny versions of every Pokemon from the Kanto region.

Pokemon Sword and Shield Player Shares Heartbreaking Shiny Metagross Loss

Shiny Pokemon are some of the most elusive creatures in the series, so losing out on the chance to have one as part of your collection can be heartbreaking. Pokemon Sword and Shield player and Reddit user Cleffa-on-a-Laptop shared a video of a Max Raid battle in which they had a chance to catch a Shiny Metagross. In the video, the user can be seen deliberating between Poke Ball options before electing to use an Ultra Ball. While it can’t be seen in the video, the user mentions in the thread that they actually had a Master Ball, but elected to save it. Unfortunately, that Ultra Ball wasn’t enough to catch the creature, leading to a lost Shiny!

The video from Cleffa-on-a-Laptop can be found embedded below.

I think my soul just died… (My bad for the horrible video quality.) from r/PokemonSwordAndShield

Introduced in Pokemon Gold and Silver, Shiny Pokemon have become highly sought-after since. There are fans that dedicate hundreds of hours to search out some of the most elusive Shiny Pokemon, so the prospect of losing out on one of those opportunities is horrifying to say the least. What’s more, Metagross is often used by competitive players, so the creature could have been an invaluable part of a team!

Alas, it seems that it was not meant to be for Cleffa-on-a-Laptop! Perhaps their video will stand as a cautionary tale (not to be confused with a Clefairy Tale) about the need to use Master Balls a bit more judiciously. Master Balls were introduced with Pokemon Red and Green, and most series entries allow players to obtain just one throughout the game; they also have a 100% catch rate. As such, some players tend to hoard them, waiting for the perfect opportunity. If the Reddit user had just elected to use that Master Ball in their inventory, they might have had a new team member, as opposed to the regret of a lost chance. Pokemon fans, don’t let the same thing happen to you!

Pokemon Sword and Shield is available now, exclusively on Nintendo Switch. You can check out all of our previous coverage of the game right here.

This $23 emergency radio is all you need to survive the zombie (or robot) apocalypse

dodocool

It seems we inch closer to some sort of apocalypse every day, but even if you’re not fighting off hordes of zombies or killer robots, you might still need to know the weather in the middle of a hurricane. That’s where an emergency radio comes in. The Dodocool Emergency Radio has all the bases covered, including AM/FM and NOAA weather broadcasts, a flashlight and 2,000-mAh USB charging for your mobile devices. Right now you can get this Emergency Radio for $23 when you click the coupon on the product page and apply promo code TECHB0025 at checkout. That’ll save you 34% off the usual price of $35.

The best part of this radio — and the feature that caught my attention — is the hand crank, which lets you power it entirely with human muscles. Whether you crank it yourself or opt to keep your kids busy during a power failure by cranking the radio is up to you. During routine, non-emergency situations, you can use the radio without working up a sweat, because it runs on your choice of AC, a trio of AAA batteries, USB or solar power as well.

The radio is pretty compact; it measures about 7x5x3 inches, but is packed with routine and survival features. There’s a flashlight and reading light, SOS alarm and radio, as well as a 2,000-mAh power bank. That versatility can earn it a place on camping trips as well as your robot-invasion-bug-out kit.

Players Unlock A New Secret Weapon In Assassin’s Creed Valhalla After Hitting A Pile Of Rocks

Screenshot: Ubisoft / Kotaku

Players have discovered a new hidden and powerful bow in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. All you have to do is find a specific pile of rocks and hit it a few times and reload your save. Though, this isn’t the intended way to get the weapon.

Players have discovered that a small, unremarkable pile of rocks in the northern area of the main Valhalla map holds a strange and powerful secret. If you hit these rocks… nothing happens. Unlike similar rock piles in the game, this pile won’t break. However, if you hit this pile of rocks a few times, save your game, and reload, well nothing happens. But repeat this a few times, for most players, it takes about three reloads, and eventually, you’ll unlock Norden’s Arc.

JorRaptor did a great video showing off the rock method, how players even figured it out and how powerful the bow is. (Spoilers: It’s very deadly.)

This hunter bow is an Isu weapon. The Isu were an ancient civilization of super-powerful beings who enslaved humans and… look, you probably don’t care and I don’t have the time to fully explain it. They were powerful and aren’t around anymore, but their relics and weapons still exist, like this bow. That’s the short version.

My new bow

I gave this method a try and got lucky. On my very first reload it worked. Though I deleted the save. Because, while this method works reliably, it doesn’t seem like the way Ubisoft would have intended players to unlock this special weapon. It seems like a glitch.

This was confirmed earlier today by Darby McDevitt, the narrative director on Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. McDevitt explained on Twitter, in a reply to a JorRaptor tweet, that this method was a “clever brute force hack” that might be useful for speedrunners.

However, he clarified that there is an actual in-game way to unlock this bow, but didn’t say how. Though when someone pointed out that some player must have solved the secret by now, McDevitt vaguely responded “Someone almost has.

Neeva by IIT grads to take on Google with ad-free, private search product

“At scale, an ad-supported product serves the company that shows you ads, it does not serve you.” With this thought, Sridhar Ramaswamy and Vivek Raghunathan, IIT alumni and former Google executives, are ready to roll out Neeva, an ad-free, private search product, which, by the middle of this year, hopes to offer a customer-paid and customer-first alternative, at a time of growing concerns over the control wielded by tech megaliths. Read in Malayalam

“The ad model has been great for bringing search to everyone on the planet, but over time, there is more and more pressure to show more ads and not really what the user wants. Our thesis is that we can create a much better search product, focusing solely on what a customer needs,” says Ramaswamy, the CEO of Neeva, speaking on a video call from his California home. This is a domain the 54-year-old knows well, having been the senior vice-president of ads and commerce at Google, and also run its travel, shopping and search infrastructure teams.

Raghunathan studied at IIT Mumbai and was earlier vice-president of Monetisation at YouTube.

“So it’s actually a broad set of experiences. Similarly, Vivek was the first tech lead of what is now called the Google Assistant. So we’ve actually worked on search on both sides,” Ramaswamy says, a graduate from IIT Chennai. This is why they felt “confident enough” that they could build the technology relatively inexpensively, he adds.

With a 45-person team in the US, the plan is to roll out Neeva in “four-five months”, first in the home market of the US and then English-speaking regions like Western Europe, Australia and India. “Fortunately we have a great team of engineers, designers and product managers, and very good backers,” says Ramaswamy. Neeva has raised $37.5 million so far, with equal investments from Greylock, Sequoia Capital and Ramaswamy himself.

The product will be different from what people are used to, offering a single window for search and queries into personal data on services like Dropbox and email accounts, Ramaswamy says. “We have to rethink the core technology. And at some level, things like how you crawl the web, how you index the basics are similar,” he says. Like Google, Neeva will also use AI and machine learning to create the secret sauce — rankings for searches.

On apprehensions that may arise regarding personal data, Ramaswamy says, “We guarantee that the product and company are designed so that personal data is indexed to serve your results, and for nothing else… We are creating a company that, from the beginning, is customer first and customer only. We are very adamant about making sure that this is the one and only revenue source.”

A blog on Neeva also reiterates its commitment to be ad-free, guarantees that “your data will never be sold in any form whatsoever”, and promises that search history will be deleted by default after 90 days. (Google’s default is 18 months.)

Having spent 16 years at Google, Ramaswamy says he has come to believe that it is “just not healthy” to have very large tech platforms control so much. “There are good people there, that’s not the issue. If you need to make more money, the temptation to show one more ad is just very strong,” he says, adding that what Neeva provides is a choice. “And giving this choice creates a richer Internet.”

He is aware of the challenges of offering a paid product, and the need to ensure that it is “excellent”. However, Ramaswamy says, for him that is the motivation. He cites the example of services like Spotify and Dropbox, which succeeded in segments where there was no dearth of free options, and hopes that Neeva may also force their competitors to cut back on ads. “… You can’t now say, I’m going to show a page full of ads… Users are going to go for a paid option, because too much is too much.”

Ramswamy adds, “We feel confident that a certain segment of the population will see value in a superior product. And especially in the current environment of worry, about how large and how influential the tech companies are, we feel we can get enough people who say ‘I just want a simple alternative, a service that I use, that I pay’. And that’s it, there’s no more worry about data, there’s no more worry about what else is going on.”
