Kuo: OLED iPad Air and Mini-LED MacBook Air coming next year

Rumors have been suggesting that Apple will soon release a new iPad Pro with a Mini-LED display, but the company also plans to bring this technology to other devices in the future. In a research note obtained by 9to5Mac, reliable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims that Mini-LED displays will be used in the MacBook Air by 2022, while the 2022 iPad Air will feature an OLED display.

Kuo points out that although Apple will now adopt Mini-LED displays for the new iPad Pro, other iPad models will switch to OLED displays, beginning with iPad Air next year. Mini-LED panels offer the same benefits as OLED, such as deeper blacks — since the backlighting is based on several small LEDs — but they don’t suffer from burn-in.

However, as Mini-LED is a more expensive technology, Apple plans to bring OLED to the cheaper iPads, which includes the iPad Air and the entry-level iPad. Unlike the iPhone, in which Apple had to use a custom OLED panel that is folded at the bottom, the OLED displays that the company will adopt in the iPad are flat. This means that the cost for the new panels will be close to what Apple currently pays for each LCD panel used in the iPad Air.

According to the analyst, Apple has no plans to bring OLED to its productivity devices because of burn-in concerns, which could be more noticeable by users who work with the same software for hours. Kuo says that the MacBook Air will also get a Mini-LED display by 2022, which will also boost the adoption of this technology.

He previously said that Apple is also working on new redesigned MacBook Pros with Mini-LED, which are expected to be introduced sometime later this year. Bloomberg today reported that the next generation iPad Pro will launch in April with Mini-LED, but only the larger 12.9-inch model will get the new panel.

Grimes posts heart-melting video of baby X AE A-XII, 10 months, laughing as he plays on a synthesizer

Grimes posted a heart-melting Insta Stories video Wednesday of her 10-month-old son X AE A-XII playing on a little baby synthesizer.

The 33-year-old singer shares her child with her beau, 49-year-old tech heartthrob Elon Musk who is CEO of SpaceX and Tesla.

In her charming new video the baby could be seen making techno music come out of the machine and then laughing.

So sweet: Grimes posted a heart-melting Insta Stories video Wednesday of her 10-month-old son X AE A-XII playing on a little baby synthesizer

Grimes, aka Claire Elise Boucher, could be heard giggling off-camera and cooing at her son: ‘You’re so smart!’ as he played with the synthesizer.

A couple of months ago Elon passed up Jeff Bezos to become the world’s richest man but at the moment Jeff is back at the top spot according to Forbes.

When Grimes first gave birth to his baby last May it was initially announced that they had named their child X Æ A-12.

Baby mine: In her charming new video the baby could be seen making techno music come out of the machine and then laughing

However they then discovered that the California constitution only allows legal names to contain characters from the English alphabet.

As a result they eventually changed the name to X Æ A-XII, replacing the Hindu-Arabic numerals ’12’ with Roman numerals signifying the same number.

Elon – who shares five sons with his first wife Justine Wilson and was married twice to his second wife Talulah Riley – has explained how to pronounce X Æ A-XII.

Proud mama: Grimes herself could be heard giggling off-camera and cooing at her son: ‘You’re so smart!’ as he played with the synthesizer

He dished that Grimes ‘came up with the name’ except for ‘A-12’ which was ‘my contribution’ and was inspired by Lockheed’s aircraft ‘Archangel-12, the precursor to the SR-71, coolest plane ever. It’s true.’

Elon confided: ‘It’s actually, I think it’s better being older and having a kid. I appreciate it more. Yeah, ’cause babies are awesome.’

Automata’s New PC Version Is Better Than The Busted Original Release

Screenshot: Square Enix

A new PC version of Nier: Automata, part of the Become As Gods Edition, has just been released on the Microsoft Store and Game Pass. And early reports are that, unlike the version available on Steam, this one actually works.

The game’s original PC release on Steam back in 2017 was a notoriously poor port, so much so that fans had to step in and work on “mods” that patched up things that should have been working at release, from framerates to resolution issues.

As notorious as the port, though, was publisher Square Enix’s seeming unwillingness to do anything to fix the game, letting it languish on the marketplace for years, warts and all, in spite of Automata’s critical and commercial success.

That’s changed this week with the PC’s Become As Gods Edition—released first on Xbox back in 2018—which early users are reporting is just fine, and so is likely a direct port of that improved Xbox edition, and not…whatever collection of rat hairs and broken glass the original PC version was made of.

This PC version of Become As Gods is available on Game Pass, but also directly on the Microsoft Store if you’re reading this in the future and it’s been taken off the subscription service.

Note: While this appears to be a superior version to the original, there are still things present (like a fps cap) that the FAR mod is able to fix or improve on, so if you still want to check that out (or see if it works with this version at all, maybe it won’t!), you can find it here.

Terry Bogard announced for The King of Fighters 15 as the final member of Team Fatal Fury

SNK is continuing their new tradition of announcing new King of Fighters 15 characters every week with Yuri Sakazaki previously joining the ranks while sporting her longer hair once again.

This week’s big reveal goes to none other than Terry Bogard himself looking sharper than perhaps they ever have before while also providing the most amount of KOF15 gameplay to date with an extended trailer.

SNK’s poster boy was almost a shoe-in for a spot on the roster, so his arrival now isn’t much of a surprise to anyone though his new look will hopefully make fans give their thumbs up in approval.

All of his special moves from KOF14 can be spotted throughout the gameplay with Power Wave, Burn Knuckle, Crack Shoot, Rising Tackle and Power Charge getting a new coat of paint though one change seems apparent from the start with the EX version of the shoulder causing a crumple instead of wall bounce.

While Power Geyser and Buster Wolf are obviously back as his Desperation Moves in the new game, Terry seems to have a new Climax Move we assume will be called Buster Launcher which seems based on his Power Charge that leads into an uppercut before exploding.

As was the case with many previous titles, Terry also makes up the third and final member of Team Fatal Fury alongside his brother Andy and old friend Joe Higashi to keep the tradition alive.

This now makes three full teams we know about between Sacred Treasures becoming official and Hero leading the way into the future.

Terry is also so special that he gets a full extra minute of gameplay to show off which let’s us see more of how the combo structure and gameplay is going to work for KOF15. There’s still a lot we don’t know about the game, however, like what the HUD will look like, what systems we can play it on and most importantly, when it’s going to release.

Microsoft PowerPoint can now help you practice presentations almost anywhere — no humans required

Microsoft’s Presenter Coach, which helps you practice presentations, has been available on the web version of PowerPoint for a while now, but it’s finally coming to the desktop and mobile versions of the app. According to Microsoft, the feature will now be available on Mac, Windows, iOS, Android, and, of course, the web.

PowerPoint Presenter Coach listens to you while you practice a presentation out loud — it analyzes what you’re saying, and can warn you if you’re talking too fast or slow, using filler words like “um” or “ahh,” or just reading the words off the slide (a personal pet peeve of mine). Trying it out on both PowerPoint for Windows and iOS, it worked shockingly well, doing pretty much everything Microsoft says it should. At the end it gives you a little report, telling you what you need to practice.

Along with the expanded availability, there are also some new ways that the feature can try to make your presentation better: it can look at body language (how close you are to the camera, if you’re making eye contact or putting things in front of your face), and warn you if you’re repeating words or saying them wrong. And yes, it still tells you not to swear in your presentation.

PowerPoint for web (seen here) censors the profanity, but the version for Windows hilariously doesn’t.

When I tried it, the feature didn’t show up in the Mac version of the app, but I was able to use it on iOS. Microsoft was not immediately available for comment about when the feature would show up on the Mac, or on whether the vocal and video analysis was done on-device or in the cloud for the desktop and mobile versions.

For the privacy-conscious, though, it is worth noting that when I tried it in airplane mode, it told me I had to connect to the internet to use the coaching feature.

[Updated] Looking to disable Google Chrome Reading list? Here’s how to

New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….

Original story (published on March 16, 2021) follows:

The latest iteration of the Google Chrome browser carries a version number of 89 and was merged into the stable branch early this month. The update brings about several new features.

For the uninitiated, the profiles module has received a big revamp with the update where each user can now customize their profile with a custom background and play around with various themes and color schemes.

The update also implements support for WebHID, which in short is an API that allows web applications to interact with human interface devices (HID) like VR controls, gamepads, and joysticks.

And last but not least is the new Google Chrome Reading List feature that allows users to save stuff they find worth reading for later or maybe just for archiving purposes.

Prior to this, people were dependent on third-party plugins like Pocket for the same purpose, but it’s now great to see Chrome have its very own built-in function.

Nonetheless, to add stuff to Chrome’s Reading List, simply hit the star icon inside the address bar and then select “Add to Reading List”.

Such saved sites can then be conveniently accessed from the far left of Chrome’s bookmark bar, as shown in the above image.

This implementation, however, hasn’t gone down well with everyone. Many are now complaining that the Reading List option eats up too much of the bookmark bar’s space – space that could otherwise be used to keep additional bookmarks in view.

Therefore, some users have been seeking a way to hide it altogether.

Source

So this “Reading list” just appeared near my bookmarks and it’s taking too much space that I need for my bookmarks. I wonder how can I get rid of it.
Source

How to hide – Reading list from bookmark. It was bugging the heck out of me, just appeared out of nowhere today.
Source

Fortunately for you, we managed to lay our hands on a simple solution.

You may be aware that Google Chrome gives users a great degree of control over its features through the Flags. And while most of the stuff under it may be experimental, it does end up serving quite well for those looking for a way to customize Chrome beyond what it permits on its front-end.

This very feature is now going to help us remove the Reading List from the bookmarks bar on Google Chrome by disabling it entirely. Simply follow the steps given below for immediate results:

NOTE: If you want to learn about Google Chrome Reading List on Android, head here.

1. Enter chrome://flags/#read-later into the address bar and hit the Enter key.
2. Select “Disabled” from the drop-down list next to the Reading List option.
3. Restart Chrome.

Of course, the above series of steps are completely valid across any desktop operating system – be it macOS, Windows, or Linux.

Rather simple isn’t it? Hopefully, the workaround did the job for you. If it indeed did, be sure to inform us in the comments below.

Update 1 (March 17)

It’s worth noting that like it’s usually the case in phased rollouts, the Reading List feature may not be available for everyone (as it has just started rolling out). The only way to get rid of it at the moment is the one which we have described above.

However, if you don’t want to walk that path, but want Google to roll back the feature instead, then it’s worth knowing that a rollback will only happen when a lot of users send negative feedback about the feature to the company. So the best you can do is to send your views as feedback to the company.

Take a look at what a product expert at the community recently said regarding this (translated):

It’s not in my environment
I think it’s probably applied sequentially or in the form of “distributed as a test to a small number of people”

As is often the case with Google, if you want to apply it to everyone at once
We may pre-apply to 5% or 10% of users to see the reaction in advance.
Eventually it will be applied to all
I think that it will be withdrawn at a small number of times if it is a fatal defect or a big unpopularity.
(Isn’t there a lot of visible withdrawals?)

I think it’s good to send “Jamada” as an opinion
I think it’s good to send feedback and say, “I’m getting more and more obstructive to the reading list. I want to get rid of it.”

Motorola’s Ready For brings a DeX-style desktop to the Edge Plus

Motorola is expanding its Edge Plus flagship phone with a new, desktop computer interface called Ready For. Similar to Samsung’s DeX, Ready For allows users to plug their smartphone into a larger screen (using either a USB-C to USB-C or USB-C to HDMI cable), allowing the Edge Plus (and presumably, future Motorola phones) to be used as a computer or even a set-top box alternative.

The company actually envisions four different use cases for Ready For. On the most basic level, users can convert the Edge Plus into a mobile desktop computer setup, complete with a Bluetooth mouse or keyboard — similar to DeX.

But Motorola also has more interesting ideas for how to use the Edge Plus. One more, for instance, turns the Edge Plus into a videoconference station, using the superior cameras on the smartphone (either the 108-megapixel main lens or the 16-megapixel ultrawide lens) for a better video chat experience.

There are also entertainment options. Players can pair a controller and use the Edge Plus as a makeshift console, either for native mobile games like Fortnite or with game-streaming services like xCloud. Users can also hook up their phone as an easily portable set-top box — Motorola envisions plugging the Edge Plus into a hotel room TV, for instance, giving you access to all your already logged-in streaming apps when you’re traveling without having to worry about your room’s Wi-Fi setup.

Ready For (or DeX) isn’t the first attempt to turn a smartphone into a computer. Mobile phone history is littered with past attempts, like the aborted Palm Foleo or Motorola’s own Atrix 4G’s LapDock accessory. And while Motorola’s use cases here are a little ambitious (and, perhaps, a little optimistic about the number of users who routinely keep HDMI to USB-C cables around), there are certainly more creative ideas for converting a phone to a larger screen beyond a half-baked desktop computer experience.

Motorola’s Ready For experience is set to roll out to Edge Plus users on Verizon starting today.

Intel Rocket Lake-S desktop gaming CPUs are here

This week, Intel announced its 11th generation S-series desktop CPUs, codenamed Rocket Lake-S. These are gaming-oriented processors optimized for high clock rates and performance, coming in 19 SKUs ranging from i5-11400T through 19-11900K.

The new chips, based on Intel’s Cypress Cove architecture, claim up to a 19 percent increase in Instructions per Clock cycle—a very familiar figure, since it’s the same number AMD claimed for gen-on-gen IPC uplift between its Zen 2 and Zen 3 architectures. We’ll do some hands-on benchmarking in the near future to determine how important the “up to” hedge on that claim matters.

In the meantime, we’re cautiously optimistic about the “up to 19 percent IPC” and “up to 50 percent iGPU” performance Intel is claiming. As usual, the really big numbers Intel shows for the new generation of processors don’t have much to do with general-purpose CPU performance—they’re tied pretty directly to finding AVX-512 optimized workloads. But the 19 percent isn’t tied to AVX-512, and it has not come at the price of reduced clock speeds or higher rated TDP, either.

Intel is also releasing a new Z590 motherboard chipset. Boards built on Z590 will offer 20 PCI Express 4.0 lanes, USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 20Gbps ports, Thunderbolt 4, and improved Direct Memory Interface. The new boards will also support 10th gen processors—but those older CPUs don’t have PCIe 4.0 support, so don’t expect a new Z590 board to unlock it.

Rocket Lake-S CPUs are incompatible with H410 or B460 boards, and compatibility with Z490 is uncertain at best. If you want a Rocket Lake-S CPU, we strongly recommend a new Z590 board to go with it.

In another familiar story for Intel, what the new generation does give up is core count—although only at the Core i9 level. The i9-10900K was a 10 core, 125W TDP part with maximum single-core boost of 5.3GHz; the i9-11900K matches the TDP and frequency but drops to eight cores. Core i7 and Core i5 CPUs remain 8c/16t and 6c/12t, respectively.

Ars has product samples of the i9-11900K and i5-11600K processors on hand, along with a new Z590 chipset based motherboard. We’ll naturally be offering hands-on benchmark results later this month.
