NFL Week 5 Power Rankings: All hail the NFC East (for now), as Cowboys crack top 10, Giants make sizable leap

Before the season, most laughed at the NFC East.

NFC Least, they said.

A month into the season, nobody is laughing now. The last remaining undefeated team in the league is the 4-0 Philadelphia Eagles, fresh off a comeback victory in the slosh over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday. They remain atop my Power Rankings this week, but there are two other 3-1 teams in the NFC East.

The Dallas Cowboys, who have won three straight games with backup quarterback Cooper Rush, and the New York Giants, who somehow find themselves with three victories despite being anything but pleasing to the eyes, are both one game behind the Eagles.

The Cowboys have the look of a team that will stay there, with a big game against Philadelphia on the road looming in two weeks after a tough one with the Los Angeles Rams this week. The Giants don’t have that same look, but coach Brian Daboll deserves a ton of credit for getting this team off to a fast start. We will know a lot more about the Giants this week when they play the Green Bay Packers in London this Sunday.

For now, the top of the division is a combined 10-2, with only the 1-3 Washington Commanders dragging the division down, with two of their losses having come to the Eagles and the Cowboys.

The Eagles are the story for now. They faced the NFL’s best run defense in the Jaguars and ran through them for over 200 yards in the rain. They rallied from 14-0 down to win, 29-21, thanks to a fierce pass rush combined with that run game.

Quarterback Jalen Hurts didn’t put up gaudy numbers, but he again played a big part in the victory, which is why he’s smack dab in the middle of the MVP conversation.

The Cowboys are winning with defense and some timely throws by Rush. But any talk of a quarterback controversy when Dak Prescott is back healthy is absurd. It’s Prescott’s team and the Cowboys will be much better when he’s back.

As for the Giants, they’ve taken the old-school approach to winning, which is running the football and playing sound defense. Thanks to the resurgence of Saquon Barkley, who leads the league in rushing, the Giants have the top-ranked run offense in the league. They are also ninth in scoring defense.

At times, the Giants are ugly to watch. There is no dynamic passing game, but the old-time football has them at 3-1. I doubt they can continue to win without improving the passing game, which could be tough with their top two quarterbacks banged up. But the start deserves praise.

So, for now, let’s hail the NFC East — and especially the Eagles.

Teams

1

Eagles

After a slow start, they showed how good they are in rallying to beat the Jaguars. They are the clear top team in the league. 4-0-0

2

Bills

That was a big-time, comeback victory against the Ravens on the road. That speaks volumes about this team. 1 3-1-0

3

Chiefs

Going to Tampa Bay and beating up on the Bucs gets them back on track after that loss to the Colts. They looked like the Chiefs offense of old in that game. 2 3-1-0

4

Packers

They have to be better than what they showed against the Patriots, or they won’t be winning games against better teams down the road. The run defense isn’t good right now. 3-1-0

5

Dolphins

The Tua Tagovailoa situation clouds their fast start. It’s Teddy Bridgewater this week against the Jets, which will be a tougher game than maybe they thought. 3 3-1-0

6

Buccaneers

The defense carried this team the first three weeks, but got beat up against the Chiefs. They haven’t played a complete game yet. 2-2-0

7

Vikings

At 3-1, they are in first place after a victory over the Saints in London. The good news is they got Justin Jefferson back on track. The defense, though, has to be better. 4 3-1-0

8

Cowboys

Cooper Rush has done a great job in place of Dak Prescott as the Cowboys have won three straight. The defense is carrying the team. 5 3-1-0

9

49ers

That defense is outstanding, even with guys missing time. DeMeco Ryans is doing a great job, and they looked like a playoff team against the Rams. 6 2-2-0

10

Rams

They just don’t look good right now. Matt Stafford isn’t playing well behind a bad offensive line and they lack playmakers not named Cooper Kupp. 3 2-2-0

11

Ravens

Their defense is awful right now, which limits their chances to win. That is not a Ravens team we’ve come to expect. 3 2-2-0

12

Titans

They’ve won two straight in typical Titans fashion: Using their toughness. They have righted things since that Bills debacle. 4 2-2-0

13

Bengals

They evened up their record by beating Miami, but now face a big division game at Baltimore. They still don’t seem to be clicking on offense just yet. 5 2-2-0

14

Jaguars

They showed well early against the Eagles, but then fell apart. Trevor Lawrence has to be better, and really has to do a better job of taking care of the football. 5 2-2-0

15

Chargers

They did some good things on offense against the Texans, bouncing back from that Jaguars loss. They still need to be better on defense. 5 2-2-0

16

Giants

At 3-1, they are one of the early surprises of this season. They don’t win pretty, but they find a way. The quarterback injuries are concerning. 7 3-1-0

17

Browns

The injuries have impacted their defense, but they had their chances against the Falcons. Now 2-2, they haven’t looked like a playoff team yet. 5 2-2-0

18

Broncos

At 2-2, they haven’t come close to looking like the team many expected. They’ve been just off on both sides of the ball at different times this season. 4 2-2-0

19

Colts

At 1-2-1, they are limping into their Thursday night game with the Broncos. The Jonathan Taylor injury situation bears watching. 2 1-2-1

20

Cardinals

At 2-2, they had to have the road game at Carolina and they got it with an impressive second half. Now they face the league’s top team in the Eagles at home in prove-it game. 1 2-2-0

21

Raiders

They faced a must-win game against the Broncos, and they won it. Maybe that’s the game that gets this team going, but now they get the Chiefs on the road. 4 1-3-0

22

Falcons

At 2-2, they are tied for first place in their division. Give Arthur Smith credit for this team’s start. 4 2-2-0

23

Patriots

They showed a lot of fight against Green Bay after being forced to play Bailey Zappe at quarterback because of injuries. But they are limited in a lot of ways. 3 1-3-0

24

Saints

Injuries have hurt them a lot, but at 1-3 they are one of the early-season disappointments. The good news is nobody is running away with the division. 3 1-3-0

25

Bears

They can’t pass the football or protect their quarterback. That limits what they can do, which looks like it will be a season-long problem. 1 2-2-0

26

Jets

Zach Wilson looked good in his first game back from injury, which is encouraging for the future. Robert Saleh has this team heading in the right direction. 1 2-2-0

27

Seahawks

Geno Smith is playing outstanding football at quarterback. Their offense has become fun to watch. The defense has issues. 4 2-2-0

28

Steelers

It’s Kenny Pickett time now, which is a good thing. But at 1-3, this might be a season for him to learn and grow and not about wins and losses. 6 1-3-0

29

Lions

They are fun to watch since they score a lot, but that defense is awful. They can’t stop anybody, which is going to make for a long season. 1 1-3-0

30

Panthers

The Baker Mayfield experiment just isn’t working. He is playing poorly, and this team could be headed for a coaching change. 1 1-3-0

31

Commanders

They have lost three straight and have looked bad in doing so. Are changes coming, both with starters and coaches? 1 1-3-0

32

Texans

They showed something in coming back against the Chargers, but they aren’t good enough to win games like that. This is going to be a long season. 0-3-1

Bobby Wagner: Protester tackled by LA Rams linebacker as he ran onto field

CNN
 —

A protester met the full-force of NFL linebacker Bobby Wagner on Monday night as the Los Angeles Rams hosted the San Francisco 49ers.

At the end of the first half, a man ran onto the field at the Levi’s Stadium carrying a pink flare, temporarily halting play.

While he initially evaded the efforts of stewards trying to stop him, he made the mistake of running towards the Rams defensive bench.

Wagner and teammate Takkarist McKinley saw him coming and, as McKinley tried to grab hold of the protester, Wagner took him down.

Content with his intervention, the 32-year-old walked away as security escorted the man off the field.

“He looked like he wasn’t supposed to be on the field,” Wagner told reporters after the game. “I saw security was having a little problem – so I helped him out.”

NFL legends Peyton and Eli Manning seemed to enjoy the takedown as they reacted on ESPN.

“That’s what we’re talking about. Wagner, a veteran. Get him down, now get out and let the guys takeover. Bobby Wagner, a veteran play,” Peyton laughed as he watched a replay of the incident.

Animal rights group Direct Action Everywhere took responsibility for the stunt, with the protester trying to raise awareness of ‘Right to Rescue,’ an affiliate organization that looks to “help the whistleblowers facing prison time for exposing factory farm abuses and rescuing suffering animals.”

Another protester also tried to disturb the game but appeared to be stopped early on.

Direct Action Everywhere posted a picture on Twitter of the two activists after they were released, adding that they were “a bit beaten up but in good spirits.”

It also said the man tackled by Wagner had a burn on his arm, presumably from the flare.

The 49ers went on to dominate the Rams behind a stout defense that had seven sacks and an interception, winning 24-9 to move to 2-2 on the season. The loss also drops the defending champion Rams to 2-2 on the year.

Phillies clinch playoff spot for first time since 2011 in win over Astros

HOUSTON — The Phillies are going to a place they haven’t been to since the bright and shiny days of Jimmy, Chase, Ryan, Cole, Chooch and Big Chuck.

After 10 long seasons of not making the playoffs, 10 seasons that included a full tear down, a rebuild, the end of a long sellout streak, several huge free-agent spending sprees, six managers, three general managers, a change of leadership at the ownership level, a dedication to analytics, the addition of a president of baseball operations, and way too many losses, the Phillies are finally headed back to the postseason.

They clinched a National League wild-card spot with a 3-0 win over the Houston Astros deep in the heart of Texas on Monday night.

Aaron Nola pitched the game of his life. Kyle Schwarber hit the first pitch of the game over the wall in left-center. He hit another homer, his 46th, in the top of the eighth, going back-to-back with rookie Bryson Stott.

Jose Alvarado was spectacular out of the bullpen and when it was over, Phillies players mobbed each other on the field.

October baseball, a regular occurrence from 2007 to 2011 and a stranger since, is back on Philadelphia’s sporting marquee and the longest postseason drought in the NL is over. The Phillies will play their first postseason game since October 7, 2011, the night Roy Halladay left it all on the mound and Ryan Howard blew out his Achilles tendon in a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals, on Friday. St. Louis is a potential opponent. So are the Mets. It’ll be a best-of-three series, all to be played on the road because the Phillies will be the lower seed. After 10 years of grim darkness, they aren’t about to complain about the venue.

With their magic number down to one, the Phillies needed a win over the Astros or a Milwaukee loss to gain entry to the postseason.

On the out-of-town scoreboard, the Brewers and Diamondbacks went back and forth on their way to extra innings. The Brewers ended up winning.

But it didn’t matter.

The Phillies took care of their own business.

They walked through the front door, with the longest-tenured member of the team and a newcomer and emotional leader showing them the way.

Nola debuted with the Phillies in 2015. He entered Monday night’s game with 202 career starts, the second most of any active pitcher not to appear in a postseason game. In his 203rd career start, he pitched perfect baseball for 6 2/3 innings, retiring 20 batters in a row, before giving up a pair of singles and leaving the game at 88 pitches. He walked none and struck out nine.

Schwarber came to the Phillies in March on a four-year, $79 million contract and so far has been worth every penny. In just a few months with the team, he became its emotional leader. He also became its home run leader, the league leader for that matter. He led a June renaissance for the team with 12 homers and 27 RBIs. When the Phillies were desperate for a win Saturday night in Washington, Schwarber homered twice. When they were on the cusp of clinching a playoff berth in the 160th game of the season Monday night, he homered twice.

Alvarado’s contribution in recent months has been huge and it was again in the clincher. Manager Rob Thomson asked him to protect a 1-0 lead with two men on base in the seventh and he struck out lefty-hitting Kyle Tucker with a 101-mph sinker. He stayed for the bottom of the eighth and got three more outs. In that inning, he was pitching with a 3-0 lead thanks to the back-to-back homers by Stott and Schwarber against Jose Urquidy in the top of the inning. Zach Eflin, another longtime Phillie who has never been to the postseason, got the final three outs and the first save of his career.

In the biggest win of the season, Thomson pulled Nola at the right time and brought in the right guy from the bullpen. In his own way, Thomson was as clutch as Nola, Schwarber, Stott and Alvarado, both on Monday night and in the big picture.

The Phillies were seven games under .500 when Thomson took over for Joe Girardi in early June. The team quickly turned things around and played itself into playoff contention. Things got a little rocky in recent weeks, but now everything is OK. The Phillies are 65-44 under Thomson, who still wears an interim label, and 87-73 overall.

They are going to the postseason for the first time in a decade.

Through the front door.

Phillies clinch first postseason berth since 2011 as National League playoff field is set

Quinn Harris / Getty Images

The Philadelphia Phillies became the 12th and final team to clinch a postseason berth on Monday, punching their ticket with a 3-0 win over the Houston Astros. The Phillies will advance to the playoffs for the first time since 2011. That season happened to represent the final year of a stretch that saw them appear in five consecutive playoffs.

In the clinching win, the Phillies got a pair of home runs from Kyle Schwarber, who now has 46 on the season, and right-hander Aaron Nola took a perfect game into the seventh inning. Zach Eflin worked a perfect ninth for his first career save.

It’s fair to write that the Phillies took an unusual route to this point. They started the season poorly under former manager Joe Girardi’s watch, racing out to a 22-29 start before Girardi was fired. Interim skipper Rob Thomson has since guided the Phillies to a 65-44 record. That would prorate to 97 wins over a full season.

The Phillies’ chances appeared to take a major blow when star Bryce Harper was sidelined for two months by an injury. Yet their supporting cast proved good enough to keep them afloat. Indeed, Philadelphia can credit Schwarber, J.T. Realmuto, and Rhys Hoskins, among others, for leading the charge. On the pitching side of things, the Phillies have a strong four-pitcher staff consisting of proven veterans like Nola and Zack Wheeler, along with youngsters Ranger Suárez and Bailey Falter.

The Phillies had been jockeying alongside the Brewers after a rough September that saw them go 11-14. That putrid month included two separate five-game losing streaks that were separated only by a three-game winning streak. In other words, the Phillies lost 10 of 13 games from Sept. 15-29.

The rest of the National League playoff field will feature the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets, Atlanta Braves, St. Louis Cardinals, and San Diego Padres. The Phillies’ win on Monday meant that the Brewers were eliminated despite their win in extras over the Arizona Diamondbacks. That ends a streak of four straight postseason appearances for Milwaukee.

Mets-Nationals October 3 series opener postponed

NEW YORK — As the Mets looked to make a last-ditch run at the National League East title, they found both the Braves and local weather patterns blocking their path.

Monday’s series opener against the Nationals was postponed due to a steady rain that fell across the tri-state area throughout the afternoon and evening. The teams plan to make up the game as part of a single-admission doubleheader on Tuesday starting at 4:10 p.m. ET.

Carlos Carrasco and Taijuan Walker will start the doubleheader in some order for the Mets, who entered the week needing to win all three games against the Nationals to have a chance at the NL East title. The Braves would also have to lose all three of their games against the Marlins. After being swept by the Braves over the weekend in Atlanta, the Mets woke up Monday no longer controlling their own fate for the first time all season.

“They understand the reality of what’s behind them and what’s ahead of them,” manager Buck Showalter said.

It remains to be seen if the Mets will be able to play both games on Tuesday, given continued rain in the forecast. But they will try. Beyond their slim hopes at a division title, the Mets still have plenty of reasons to take the field, including keeping players sharp in advance of the Wild Card Series on Friday, and watching Jeff McNeil make a run at the NL batting title.

Assuming the Mets lose the division race, Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer are lined up to start Games 1 and 2 of the Wild Card Series at Citi Field against either the Padres or Phillies. Single-game tickets for those and other potential playoff home games will go on sale Tuesday at 10 a.m. ET.

Tickets for Monday’s game are not valid for Tuesday’s doubleheader. Fans can exchange Monday’s tickets on Tuesday or Wednesday, or to any 2023 home game in April, May or June (excluding Opening Day or the Subway Series). Full ticket exchange information is available at Mets.com/rain.

Streaker who was LAID OUT by LA Rams player during game is animal rights activist

Linebacker Bobby Wagner made a massive hit on an animal rights activist who invaded the field during the LA Rams’ loss against the San Francisco 49ers.

Earlier in the game, the Rams defense hadn’t been able to come close to getting a hit on Deebo Samuel but Wagner was on hand to tackle the invader to the ground.

The invader has been identified as animal rights activist Alex Taylor of the group Direct Action Everywhere.

The protest was designed to draw attention to the trial of two members of the group in Utah, where they are accused of stealing pigs.

The game was temporarily stopped as Taylor, carrying a purple flare, ran on the field with security chasing behind him.

The security staff struggled to keep up with Taylor leaving Wagner and teammate Takkarist McKinley decided to take matters into their own hands.

The pair had been stood on the sideline as they watched the spectator’s great escape unfold. As he passed them, the Rams players darted out in an attempt to bring him down.

McKinley came at Taylor from behind just as security had eventually caught up. He and the staff both made a move to catch the spectator but Wagner beat them to it.

Teammate Takkarist McKinley (left) also tried to bring the spectator down during the game

On Instagram, the group posted a photo of Allison Fluty and Alex Taylor showing their citations for entering the field of play

Direct Action Everywhere is a grassroots protest organization that advertised the stunt on their Instagram page prior to it taking place.

Taylor was not alone, his partner in crime, Allison Fluty, was tackled by security before she could get to the field.

In a tweet from the DAE’s official account, the pair are ‘a bit beaten up but in good spirits.’ On Instagram, the group posted a photo of Fluty and Taylor showing their citations for entering the field of play.

The post concluded: ‘They appreciate everyone’s outpouring of support and encourage folks to support the #righttorescue at righttorescue.com.’

The goal of the protest was to highlight the Smithfield Trial in which two members of the group, Paul Darwin Picklesimer and Wayne Hsiung, are accused of smuggling two piglets from the Circle Flour Farms in Utah in 2017.

Three other activists were charged in the case but took plea deals from prosecutors. The farm in question is owned by Smithfield Foods.

The trial began on Monday. Both Taylor and Fluty are from the Bay Area. The pair’s t-shirts read ‘RighttoRescue.’

Taylor said prior to the protest: ‘Smithfield will do anything to shield its abuses and protect its profits. We must take action to stop the violence and create a better future for us all.’

A month ago, two DAE activists disrupted the LA Rams opening game of the season against the Buffalo Bills. While earlier this year, the group interrupted a Minnesota Timberwolves game.

The spectator had evaded security staff (left) and invaded the field with a red flare

The veteran produced a massive hit on the invader, bringing him to the ground. Wagner then calmly stood up and strolled away from the scene.

Wagner spoke about the tackle after the game saying: ‘That’s not making a play. That’s just keeping it safe. You don’t know what that fan got or what they’re doing.

He went on: ‘You see it all the time, and we don’t know what they’re carrying in their pockets. It’s whatever that little smoke stuff is, but that s*** could be dangerous.’

The Super Bowl winner also said: ‘One of the guys on the other side, it looked like he got hurt, and security looked like he was struggling, so I was frustrated, so I took it out on him.’

While 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said of the incident: ‘I saw Bobby Wagner take somebody out. That was kind of cool to see.’

The clip was not shown on the main ESPN coverage but it did make an appearance on Manningcast and both Peyton and Eli Manning enjoyed the action.

Peyton said: ‘That’s what we’re talking about. Wagner, a veteran. Right, get him down, now get out and let these guys take over.’

The incident came with 0:41 left on the clock in the second quarter as the Rams found themselves 6-14 down to the 49ers.

Indonesian government launches probe into tear gas firing at football match, removes police chief

An Indonesian police chief and nine elite officers were removed from their posts on Monday, and 18 others were being investigated for responsibility in the firing of tear gas inside a soccer stadium that set off a stampede, killing at least 125 people, officials said.

Distraught family members were struggling to comprehend the loss of their loved ones, including 17 children, at the match in East Java’s Malang city that was attended only by hometown Arema FC fans. The organizer had banned supporters of the visiting team, Persebaya Surabaya, because of Indonesia’s history of violent soccer rivalries.

The disaster Saturday night was among the deadliest ever at a sporting event.

Arema players and officials laid wreaths Monday in front of the stadium.

“We came here as a team asking forgiveness from the families impacted by this tragedy, those who lost their loved ones or the ones still being treated in the hospital,” Arema coach Javier Roca said.

On Monday night, about 1,000 soccer fans dressed in black shirts held a candlelight vigil at a soccer stadium in Jakarta’s satellite city of Bekasi to pray for the victims of the disaster.

Witnesses said some of the 42,000 Arema fans ran onto the pitch in anger on Saturday after the team was defeated 3-2, its first loss at home against Persebaya in 23 years. Some threw bottles and other objects at players and soccer officials. At least five police vehicles were toppled and set ablaze outside the stadium.

But most of the deaths occurred when riot police, trying to stop the violence, fired tear gas, including in the stands, triggering a disastrous stampede of fans making a panicked run for the exits. Most of the 125 people who died were trampled or suffocated. The victims included two police officers.

At least 17 children were among the dead, and seven were being treated in hospitals, the Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection said. Police said 323 people were injured in the crush, with some still in critical condition.

National Police spokesperson Dedy Prasetyo said Malang police chief Ferli Hidayat had been removed along with nine members of an elite police mobile brigade. They face possible dismissal in a police ethics trial.

Prasetyo said 18 officers responsible for firing the tear gas, ranging from middle-ranking to high-ranking, were being investigated.

Police are questioning witnesses and analyzing video from 32 security cameras inside and outside the stadium and nine cellphones owned by the victims as part of an investigation that also will identify suspected vandals, he said.

The parents and other relatives of Faiqotul Hikmah, 22, wailed Monday when an ambulance arrived at their home with her body wrapped in white cloth and a black blanket. She died while fleeing to Exit 12 at Kanjuruhan Stadium.

A dozen friends had traveled with her to see the match, but Hikmah was one of only four who were able to enter the stadium because tickets were sold out, her friend, Abdul Mukid, said Monday. He later bought a ticket from a broker after hearing of the chaos inside the stadium in order to search for Hikmah.

“I have to find her, save her,” Mukid recalled thinking.

Mukid found Hikmah’s body laid at a building in the stadium compound, with broken ribs and bluish bruises on her face. He learned that a second friend also had died from other friends who called him while he was in an ambulance taking Hikmah’s body to a hospital.

“I can’t put into words how much my sorrow is to lose my sister,” said Nur Laila, Hikmah’s older sibling.

“She was just a big Arema fan who wanted to watch her favorite team play. She shouldn’t die just for that,” she said, wiping away tears.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo ordered the premier soccer league suspended until safety is reevaluated and security tightened. Indonesia’s soccer association also banned Arema from hosting soccer matches for the rest of the season.

Arema FC president Gilang Widya Pramana expressed his sadness and deepest apologies to the victims and the Indonesian people and said he is ready to take full responsibility for the tragedy at his team’s stadium.

He said the management, coach and players were in shock and speechless.

“I am ready to provide assistance, even though it will not be able to return the victims’ lives,” Pramana said at a news conference on Monday at Arema’s headquarters in Malang.

“This incident was beyond prediction, beyond reason … in a match watched only by our fans, not a single rival supporter,” he said, sobbing. “How can that match kill more than 100 people?”

He said Arema FC is ready to accept any sanctions from Indonesia’s soccer association and the government and that “hopefully, it will be a very valuable lesson.”

Indonesian Security Minister Mohammad Mahfud said he will lead an inquiry that will examine law violations in the disaster and provide recommendations to the president to improve soccer safety. The investigation is to be completed in three weeks.

Mahfud instructed the national police and military chiefs to punish those who committed crimes and actions that triggered the stampede.

“The government urged the national police to evaluate their security procedures,” Mahfud said at a news conference.

Rights group Amnesty International urged Indonesia to investigate the use of tear gas and ensure that those found responsible are tried in open court. While FIFA has no control over domestic games, it has advised against the use of tear gas at soccer stadiums.

Despite Indonesia’s lack of international prominence in the sport, hooliganism is rife in the soccer-obsessed country where fanaticism often ends in violence. Data from Indonesia’s soccer watchdog, Save Our Soccer, showed 78 people had died in game-related incidents over the previous 28 years.

Saturday’s game was among the world’s worst crowd disasters in sports, including a 1996 World Cup qualifier between Guatemala and Costa Rica in Guatemala City in which over 80 died and more than 100 were injured. In April 2001, more than 40 people were crushed to death during a soccer match at Ellis Park in Johannesburg, South Africa. In February 2012, 74 people were killed and more than 500 injured after a match between rivals al-Masry and al-Ahly when thousands of al-Masry fans invaded the field and attacked visiting supporters. The Egyptian league was suspended for two years as a result.

Baker Mayfield has fallen apart for the hopeless Panthers

Not long ago, there was some excitement over Baker Mayfield possibly reviving his career with the Carolina Panthers.

Four weeks into the season, coach Matt Rhule was asked about about his quarterback plans moving forward. He couldn’t even fake his way through a confident answer.

“I think Baker’s our quarterback,” Rhule told the media via The Athletic and other outlets.

That comment was humorous, a bit startling and most of all, illustrative.

Mayfield’s continued decline has been one of the more stunning storylines of the 2022 NFL season. The Panthers traded for him when the Cleveland Browns gave up on him and got Deshaun Watson. It seemed like a good deal for the Panthers. They gave the Browns just a 2024 conditional fifth-round pick. Carolina is paying just $5 million of Mayfield’s salary while Cleveland pays $10.5 million. Now we better understand why the Browns weren’t just giving Mayfield away, but paying a lot to be rid of him.

At the end of the 2018 season, you couldn’t have predicted that Mayfield would be at these depths. He was the first overall pick of the 2018 draft after winning a Heisman Trophy, and then he set an NFL rookie record for touchdown passes in a season. He struggled in his second season with 21 interceptions, but then bounced back in year three. He had 26 touchdowns, eight interceptions, the Browns went 11-5 and won a playoff game. He looked pretty good and was a star in television commercials you saw too often. That was less than two years ago.

Any hope that his lost 2021 season was due to injuries has dissipated. Mayfield’s play has deteriorated to a point in which the oft-maligned Sam Darnold, who is out due to a high ankle sprain, was trending on Twitter during the Panthers’ 26-16 loss to the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. That’s not good.

Sunday was a typical game for Mayfield this season. He had five passes batted down at the line. He made some bad throws and decisions. Mayfield had just 197 yards on 36 attempts. It was bad, and the fourth straight time he hasn’t played well.

It seems hard to believe but Darnold, who had just nine touchdowns to 13 interceptions last season, might be replacing Mayfield soon if he was healthy. When your coach says he “thinks” you’re the quarterback going forward, you’re in trouble.

His passer rating of 75 this season is second-lowest among all QBs with at least 70 attempts. The lowest rating in that group belongs to Mitchell Trubisky, who was benched at halftime by the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday. He has been bad despite a supporting cast that includes good receivers in D.J. Moore and Robbie Anderson and all-world running back Christian McCaffrey.

Mayfield isn’t throwing deep and he’s not completing his short passes either. His average depth of target is 6.8, which is 28th among 31 quarterbacks with 100 dropbacks according to PFF. He’s completing just 54.7 percent of his passes though, so being safe isn’t helping there. Only Justin Fields has a lower completion percentage among starters. He has one “big-time throw,” a PFF stat, in 118 attempts. That 0.8 percent is second-worst in the league (Matt Ryan is worst at 0.6 percent).

It’s all falling apart. His height of 6-foot-1 was debated before the draft and it’s an issue on all those batted passes. Mayfield always gives off the air of confidence but he doesn’t seem to be playing with much confidence at all, judging by his lack of deep throws. His accuracy, a reason he went first overall, has waned. It’s difficult to be traded in early July and be fully up to speed by the time the season starts, but it still shouldn’t be this bad.

Mayfield took a pay cut to go to the Panthers and will be a free agent after the season. He had a chance to show that 2021 was a miss due to injuries and reestablish himself as a definite starter in the NFL, whether in Carolina or elsewhere. Four games into the season, his success from 2018 and 2020 seems like a long, long time ago. Considering Carolina’s next three games are against the strong defenses of the 49ers, Rams and Buccaneers, it could get even worse. His free-agent market might be very thin in March. It’s very hard to believe if he keeps playing at this level that any team would sign him to be their starter, especially with a good quarterback class coming in next year’s draft.

There’s a lot of football to go and maybe Mayfield will turn things around. But he’s probably lucky Darnold isn’t available as an option for Rhule. Mayfield’s play has fallen that far.

Here are the power rankings after Week 4 of the NFL season:

The Texans seem to be getting an answer on Davis Mills, and it’s not a great one. He hasn’t gotten better since last year’s promising rookie season. Mills isn’t terrible but he doesn’t look like the type of quarterback that causes you to pass on a top prospect in the draft, and Houston is going to have a high pick.

One of the most amazing ongoing stats in the NFL is that under Matt Rhule, the Panthers are 1-26 when their opponent scores 17 or more points including 24 losses in a row. That’s unfathomable.

Rookie running back Brian Robinson, who was shot in the leg in a robbery attempt before the season, was taken off the non-football injury list and coach Ron Rivera said he’s optimistic Robinson can play this week. For a Washington team that hasn’t had a lot of positive news lately, that’s great to hear.

Justin Fields has 34 completions in four games. Through Sunday’s game, 16 quarterbacks had 88 or more completions this season. With that as the backdrop, here was Fields’ reaction to a question following Sunday’s loss:

Yep, nothing wrong with the passing game at all. Darn stats.

It looks like the Steelers are making the permanent switch to rookie QB Kenny Pickett. Better late than never, I guess. Pickett looked like a rookie thrown in at halftime for his debut, with some nice plays and a few mistakes. But it’s not like the Steelers had much to lose. The only problem is the next five games Pickett and the Steelers play the Bills, Buccaneers, Dolphins, Eagles and Saints. It could be a rough road for a while.

Zach Wilson wasn’t good for most of Sunday’s game, but had a few brief flashes and then came through with the game-winning drive when he needed it. The last part is enough for the Jets to be happy with how Wilson’s first game back went. There have to be positive steps this season and Sunday’s final drive was one.

Geno Smith has a pair of 300-yard games in a row and a 108 passer rating. Is he the next unlikely late-career breakout? It’s OK to be skeptical but this is going better than anyone would have guessed, Seahawks included.

The Patriots’ playcalling against Green Bay was way too conservative, especially when they had the ball over midfield in overtime, but it’s also tough when you have a rookie playing quarterback only because of two injuries ahead of him. The problem is that rookie, Bailey Zappe, might end up getting more starts at quarterback if Mac Jones and Brian Hoyer isn’t ready (and maybe even if Hoyer is ready).

The Lions’ defense is just dreadful. The Seahawks aren’t good on offense and they rang up 555 yards. Head coach Dan Campbell said he won’t make a move with defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, but it will be unavoidable if the defense keeps playing like this. The offense, on the other hand, is legit if it can put up 45 points without D’Andre Swift, Amon-Ra St. Brown and D.J. Chark. The good offense/bad defense combo has led to some wild shootouts.

The Falcons need more than seven completions to keep winning. That’s all they got on Sunday. But they are .500, which is good when you consider they were close to winning in each of their two losses. I don’t know if the Falcons can sustain this, but they’re finding a way. They have to go forward the next few weeks without Cordarrelle Patterson, who went on IR with a knee injury, which puts even more pressure on the passing game to get better.

Kenny Golladay has two catches for 22 yards this season, and that all came in the opener. The last two games he has played 51 snaps without a catch. Golladay’s $21.15 million cap hit this season is No. 1 among all wide receivers according to Spotrac. That signing is historically bad already.

Josh Jacobs had 144 yards rushing and Davante Adams had 101 yards receiving in Sunday’s win. Maxx Crosby had four tackles for loss, including two sacks. There is the top-end talent for the Raiders to get on a nice roll. The stars just haven’t all played well together at the same time yet, but it’s early in the season and Sunday’s win over the Broncos was a massively important one.

Jonathan Taylor hasn’t been ruled out of Thursday’s game, but he has an ankle injury and a short turnaround. If Taylor can’t play or is less than 100 percent, the Colts offense will struggle. And it’s hard to imagine this team struggling much more than it has. Then again, Taylor hasn’t done much either this season. It’s all a mess for Indianapolis.

Andy Dalton doesn’t bring much upside to the table anymore, but he won’t throw the Saints out of games either. If the wind is blowing just a little differently on Sunday in London, Wil Lutz’s 61-yard kick goes through and the Saints take a good Vikings team to overtime. Let’s just say there might not be a great reason to rush Jameis Winston back.

The Cardinals ran more with Kyler Murray (12 rush attempts) and they won. Go figure. The biggest question is whether the defense turned a corner after struggling most of the first three weeks, or they just happened to draw the team whose quarterback is Baker Mayfield?

Any strides the offense finally made — and there were some, Russell Wilson looked comfortable for the first time all season — were washed away with the news running back Javonte Williams has a torn ACL and will miss the rest of the season. It’s hard to believe the coaches have a lot of faith in Melvin Gordon after he lost yet another fumble Sunday, one that was returned for a key touchdown. Injuries are piling up in Denver.

Thankfully Myles Garrett didn’t sustain any serious injuries in a car accident. From a football perspective the Browns need Garrett back soon. They don’t have much margin for error, and they missed his playmaking on Sunday in a loss to the Falcons.

Mike Vrabel is a really good coach. The Titans were in some trouble at 0-2, but rebounded really well. Derrick Henry looks like he’s still capable of carrying an offense. The defense made enough plays on Sunday. I think Jacksonville is the best team in that division at the moment, but the Titans have the best coach.

It was good to see Austin Ekeler have a big game. He had more than 100 total yards and three touchdowns. With the Chargers’ injury issues, they’ll need their remaining stars to play their best and Ekeler is high on that list.

It feels like there’s an explosion coming for the offense. Joe Mixon hasn’t had a big game yet. Ja’Marr Chase has been good but not great. Joe Burrow’s numbers are way down across the board from last season. Playing at Baltimore on Sunday will be a huge turning point in their season.

You’ve have liked to have seen the Jaguars play better after taking a 14-0 lead, but the Eagles are simply better than them. The Eagles are better than most teams. The Jaguars are fine, and I’d pick them to win the AFC South based on what we’ve seen.

The Vikings didn’t look great in London, but Justin Jefferson made the plays when he had to. In a league that has just about every team trending toward the middle it’s not bad to be 3-1, even with some ugly wins.

Cooper Kupp is an amazing player. The Rams need their offense to be more than Kupp. Allen Robinson being a ghost through four games is killing their offense.

That was an absolutely dominant performance by the 49ers’ defense. San Francisco has the best defense in the NFL. And coordinator DeMeco Ryans is probably going to be a head coach at this time next year.

The Cowboys are 3-0 since Dak Prescott got hurt. No, this is not a “Cooper Rush should be the QB” statement, because that’s nonsensical. But it probably paves the way for Rush to have a long career as an expensive backup, and it’s setting Dallas up very well for when Prescott returns. The Eagles are fantastic but the NFC East race isn’t over.

Maybe Sunday night was just a matter of the Buccaneers not being good enough to compete with the Chiefs. That’s fine but not what Tampa Bay wanted this season. Injuries have been an excuse but the Bucs had most of their players back on Sunday. It just seems like everything is going to be a challenge for Tampa this season.

I get why John Harbaugh went for it instead of kicking a field goal in the fourth quarter on Sunday, but I think he should have taken the points. Then again, it’s hard to believe three points there was going to be enough to beat the Bills in regulation. It wasn’t an easy spot. The Ravens are still a very good team, one that will be even better with J.K. Dobbins reemerging to help Lamar Jackson in the run game. They just couldn’t hold off the Bills after taking a 20-3 lead, which isn’t ideal but not the end of the world either. Let’s see what happens Sunday night against the Bengals.

It’s not the most important angle of the Tua Tagovailoa injury, but the Dolphins still have games to play and will do so for at least one week without their quarterback. Miami played hard in that loss to Cincinnati, so maybe they’ll be fine. But there’s a lot of pressure on Teddy Bridgewater to keep things on track until Tagovailoa is ready to return. Miami doesn’t want to look up and their 3-0 start has been given away.

In a perfect world the Packers put away the Patriots much sooner than they did, and the same goes for the Buccaneers game the week before. This just isn’t an offense that is capable of that, yet anyway. But at least the Packers didn’t lose at home to a Patriots team down to a third-string rookie quarterback, which was in play for a while on Sunday.

The Bills play at the Chiefs in two weeks. That will be the most important game of the regular season, because neither team wants to go on the road to face the other in January. Kansas City is excellent again, mostly because they have the best quarterback in the game. Sunday night was a reminder that Andy Reid and Mahomes are going to maximize whatever they have to work with.

There are no 0-4 teams in the NFL. There’s only one 4-0 team. When they were behind 14-0 to the Jaguars and rallied to take the lead back before halftime, it said a lot about this Eagles team. They’re here to stay this season.

The Bills weren’t at their best on Sunday, but still beat a tough Ravens team in Baltimore after falling behind 20-3. That says a lot about where they are right now. We’re still waiting to see if the Bills can be a championship team, and a win like the one they got Sunday after facing plenty of adversity starts to lay that foundation.

Indonesian government launch probe into tear gas firing at football match, remove police chief

An Indonesian police chief and nine elite officers were removed from their posts Monday and 18 others were being investigated for responsibility in the firing of tear gas inside a soccer stadium that set off a stampede, killing at least 125 people, officials said.

“We came here as a team asking forgiveness from the families impacted by this tragedy, those who lost their loves ones or the ones still being treated in the hospital,” head coach Javier Roca said.

On Monday night, about a thousand soccer fans dressed in black shirts held a candlelight vigil at a soccer stadium in Jakarta’s satellite city of Bekasi to pray for the victims of the disaster.

At least 17 children were among the dead and seven were being treated in hospitals, the Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection said. Police said 323 people were injured in the crush, with some still in critical condition.

National Police spokesperson Dedy Prasetyo said Malang police chief Ferli Hidayat had been removed along with nine members of an elite police mobile brigade. They face possible dismissal in a police ethics trial.

He said 18 officers responsible for firing the tear gas, ranging from middle- to high-ranking, were being investigated.

Police are questioning witnesses and analyzing video from 32 security cameras inside and outside the stadium and nine cellphones owned by the victims as part of an investigation that will also identify suspected vandals, he said.

He later bought a ticket from a broker after hearing of the chaos inside the stadium in order to search for Hikman.

“I have to find her, save her,” Mukid recalled thinking.

Mukid found Hikmah’s body laid at a building in the stadium compound, with broken ribs and bluish bruises on her face. He learned that a second friend had also died from other friends who called him while he was in an ambulance taking Hikmah’s body to a hospital.

“I can’t put into words how much my sorrow is to lose my sister,” said Nur Laila, Hikmah’s older sibling. “She was just a big Arema fan who wanted to watch her favorite team play. She shouldn’t die just for that,” she said, wiping away tears.

President Joko Widodo ordered the premier soccer league suspended until safety is reevaluated and security tightened. Indonesia’s soccer association also banned Arema from hosting soccer matches for the rest of the season.

Arema FC President Gilang Widya Pramana expressed his sadness and deepest apologies to the victims and the Indonesian people, and said he is ready to take full responsibility for the tragedy at his team’s stadium.

He said the management, coach and players were in shock and speechless.

“I am ready to provide assistance, even though it will not be able to return the victims’ lives,” Pramana said at a news conference Monday at Arema’s headquarters in Malang.

“This incident was beyond prediction, beyond reason … in a match watched only by our fans, not a single rival supporter,” he said, sobbing. “How can that match kill more than 100 people?”

He said Arema FC is ready to accept any sanctions from Indonesia’s Soccer Association and the government, and “hopefully, it will be a very valuable lesson.”

Security Minister Mohammad Mahfud said he will lead an inquiry that will examine law violations in the disaster and provide recommendations to the president to improve soccer safety.

Data from Indonesia’s soccer watchdog, Save Our Soccer, showed 78 people have died in game-related incidents over the past 28 years.

The Egyptian league was suspended for two years as a result

St. Louis Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols hits 703rd career home run

PITTSBURGH — Albert Pujols hit his 703rd career home run Monday night.

The 42-year-old slugger connected for the St. Louis Cardinals off Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Mitch Keller, pulling a two-run shot into the left-field stands to snap a scoreless tie in the sixth inning. It was Pujols’ 35th career home run at PNC Park, his most at any visiting ballpark.

The drive gave Pujols 2,216 RBIs, which ranks second all time behind Hank Aaron’s 2,297. Babe Ruth unofficially drove in 2,214 runs but many were not counted because the statistic was not recognized by baseball until 1920.

Pujols has 24 home runs this season and is one of four players in major league history with 700, joining Barry Bonds (762), Aaron (755) and Ruth (714).

Pujols had been hitless in eight career at-bats against Keller.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
