Miyan Williams injury: Ohio State RB carted off vs. Indiana as Buckeyes’ backfield depth takes another hit

USATSI

Ohio State running back Miyan Williams was carted off the field Saturday after suffering an apparent lower-body injury in the second quarter against Indiana in an eventual 56-14 win for the Buckeyes.

Williams took the ball on second-and-6 on the edge of the red zone and was tackled on a routine stretch play. Despite a seemingly routine tackle, Williams quickly realized he injured his right leg and called for a trainer. He was carried off the field by trainers and left the sideline on a cart. Williams didn’t put any pressure on his right leg.

Williams exploded for 147 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries in the first half against Indiana. In just nine games this season, Williams rushed for 783 yards and 13 touchdowns. In the two previous games that starting running back TreVeyon Henderson missed, Williams rushed for 300 yards and seven touchdowns on 41 carries.

The loss continues what has been a frustrating season of injuries for Ohio State’s running backs. Henderson has missed multiple games with a nagging foot injury. Henderson has not cleared 20 carries since Sept. 24, and is not available against Indiana. Arizona State transfer Chip Trayanum plays linebacker, but switched to running back to help with the depth issues. However, he is unavailable against Indiana after getting dinged up in practice.

True freshman running back Dallan Hayden entered the game in Williams’ place for the next two plays. However, the Buckeyes failed to reach a first down after going for it on fourth-and-1. Williams came into Saturday with 54 carries for 255 yards. No other active running back has more than 10 carries.

Alabama vs. Ole Miss, TCU vs. Texas and more

We’re approaching the home stretch of the college football regular season.

And though Week 11 doesn’t have the top-tier matchups we saw in Week 10, there is an array of games with College Football Playoff and conference title implications. High on that list is No. 4 TCU, which is a touchdown underdog on the road against Texas. There’s also a fascinating matchup between two-loss Alabama and Ole Miss.

Time: 3:30 p.m. | TV: CBS | Line: Alabama -11.5 | Total: 64.5

It’s early November and Alabama has two losses and is on the outside looking in when it comes to the College Football Playoff picture. It’s an unfamiliar position for Nick Saban’s program, and now the Crimson Tide are headed back on the road to face a one-loss Ole Miss team coming off a bye. On the other side, Lane Kiffin would love to get a win over his former boss — a win that could all of a sudden make the Rebels much more viable in the national title picture. Ole Miss started the year 7-0 but didn’t play many above-average opponents during that stretch.

Time: 3:30 p.m. | TV: ESPN2 | Line: Tulane -1.5 | Total: 54.5

This is a massive game in the American Athletic Conference race and in the New Year’s Six bowl picture. At 8-1 overall and 5-0 in AAC play, Tulane is in first place in the AAC and is the highest-ranked Group of Five team at No. 17. UCF, at 7-2 overall and 4-1 in conference play, is next in line at No. 22. There are no other G5 teams currently ranked, so the winner of the AAC is the leader in the clubhouse to clinch a spot in the Cotton Bowl.

Time: 7 p.m. | TV: FS1 | Line: BU -2.5 | Total: 53.5

Behind undefeated TCU, the Big 12 race is mighty crowded. The top two teams in the league make the championship game, and Kansas State, Texas and Baylor are all sitting at 4-2 in conference play. K-State, though, lost to Texas last week, so the Wildcats really need to go into Waco and get a win on Saturday night. Baylor, meanwhile, has quietly strung three consecutive wins together after a two-game losing streak to open October. The Bears took care of Kansas and Texas Tech before going to Norman to beat Oklahoma last week. Kansas State is a step up in competition for Baylor, which won the Big 12 title last season.

Time: 7:30 p.m. | TV: ABC | Line: Texas -7 | Total: 64.5

While Big 12 title implications are also at play in this game, the stakes are much bigger for TCU. The Horned Frogs, now 9-0 on the year, moved up to No. 4 in the CFP rankings on Tuesday night. To get to this point, TCU has been winning a lot of tight games. In fact, six of its nine victories have been decided by 10 points or fewer. And many of those wins have been come-from-behind efforts. Perhaps that high-wire act explains why the Horned Frogs are seven-point underdogs in Austin on Saturday. Texas has been viewed favorably by the oddsmakers all season; a visit from Alabama was the only time the Longhorns have been underdogs on the year. But UT hasn’t always lived up to that billing. Texas enters this game with a 6-3 record, though all three of those losses came by one possession.

Tennessee vs. Missouri score, takeaways: No. 5 Volunteers dominate second half in bounce-back win over Tigers

No. 5 Tennessee put the disappointment of its first loss behind it in emphatic fashion as the Volunteers cruised to a 66-24 win over Missouri at Neyland Stadium. The SEC East showdown carried major postseason implications for both teams, and while the Tigers pushed Tennessee at times in the game, they ultimately had no answer for the Vols’ explosive offense.

Redshirt senior quarterback Hendon Hooker reignited his Heisman Trophy hopes with over 400 yards of total offense and four touchdowns as the Volunteers racked up a program-record 724 yards and set a school record for most points scored in an SEC game. When Missouri drew within 28-24 early in the third quarter, the Volunteers ticked off three straight touchdowns drives of 67 yards or longer to retake control of the game. Ultimately, they scored the game’s final 38 points and didn’t slow down even when backup quarterback Joe Milton entered late.

After finishing with just 289 total yards in a 27-13 loss at Georgia last week, Tennessee accumulated 365 yards in the first half alone. While Missouri quarterback Brady Cook gave the Volunteers defense fits with his scrambling ability at times, Tennessee came up with seven three-and-outs in the game as a sellout crowd offered support on the program’s Senior Day.

With the win, Tennessee finishes the home portion of its schedule unbeaten for the first time since 2007 as the Volunteers hit the road for games against South Carolina and Vanderbilt to close the regular season. At 9-1, Tennessee has now matched its best season win total since that ’07 season with at least three games still remaining.

College Football Playoff implications

With Georgia set to clinch the SEC East with a win in either of its next two games, Tennessee will likely need to earn a College Football Playoff berth as a one-loss squad that did not play in its conference championship game. That has only happened twice before in the eight years of the CFP’s existence. But Saturday marked a start toward redemption for Tennessee after the disappointing showing against the Bulldogs knocked the Vols from the No. 1 spot.

The Volunteers could not afford another slip up, and they probably need some style points to help their case. That might explain why second-year coach Josh Heupel kept airing it out with the game out of reach and Milton in the game. Things got chippy when Tennessee scored its final touchdown with just 36 seconds on the clock, but if the goal was to make a statement with a dominant victory, then the extra pair of touchdowns in the final minutes helped accomplish that goal.

Hooker’s highlights

The Heisman Trophy race is still wide open, but Hooker needed a big game to revitalize his hopes after Georgia’s defense stymied Tennessee’s offense last week. The redshirt senior delivered through the air and on the ground to keep his name firmly in the race. He finished 25-of-35 passing for 355 yards with three touchdowns while also running for 54 yards and a score.

Hooker has now thrown for 24 touchdowns and just two interceptions with another five scores on the ground. The Virginia Tech transfer positioned himself to surpass 3,000 yards passing for the season next week against South Carolina.

Running back depth

While Tennessee’s aerial attack was on display with Bru McCoy and Jalin Hyatt each surpassing 100 yards receiving, its rushing game was on point against Missouri as well. Hooker, Jabari Small, Jaylen Wright and Dylan Sampson each rattled off runs of 19 yards or more as the Vols averaged 7.1 yards per rush attempt. Sampson’s performance was particularly noteworthy as the true freshman ran eight times for 98 yards and a score.

The workload marked his largest in a conference game this season, and the former three-star prospect made a compelling case to be a larger part of the running back rotation moving forward. With Tennessee leading just 35-24 in the third quarter, Sampson rattled off runs of 42 yards and 15 yards on consecutive plays to set up a 2-yard touchdown strike from Hooker to Princeton Fant.

LSU vs. Arkansas score, takeaways: Harold Perkins Jr. stars as No. 7 Tigers escape Hogs in defensive battle

No. 7 LSU used a monster effort from freshman linebacker Harold Perkins Jr. to survive and advance 13-10 on the road against Arkansas on Saturday afternoon. Perkins took over the game with a program record four sacks in a single game, adding a batted pass and forced fumble on Arkansas quarterback Cade Fortin to clinch the game in the fourth quarter.

Perkins’ effort was part of an outstanding defensive effort from LSU, which held Arkansas to under 250 total yards and 3 yards per carry. Razorbacks starting quarterback KJ Jefferson missed the game with an injury, and backup Malik Hornsby was ultimately benched after a poor outing in his place. Fortin, the third-string signal caller, led Arkansas’ lone touchdown drive, but it wasn’t enough in a close victory for LSU.

Arkansas also had a strong day defensively, holding LSU QB Jayden Daniels to just 86 yards on 8 of 15 passing. The Hogs sacked Daniels seven times and forced both a fumble and an interception in the first quarter. However, LSU managed to pull off a controversial third-down conversion with a passing play — that looked identical to its game-winning 2-point conversion against Alabama — to run down most of the clock in the fourth quarter.

Fortin had one last drive to try and tie the game, throwing a pair of nice passes to start the drive. However, Perkins stepped up again and knocked the ball out of Fortin’s hands as he drew it back. The loose ball was recovered by the LSU defense, allowing the Tigers to run out the clock for a fourth straight victory.

With the win, LSU (8-2, 6-1 SEC) maintains control of the SEC West while eliminating Alabama from backdooring its way into the game. The Tigers can officially clinch a spot in the SEC Championship Game if No. 9 Bama beats No. 11 Ole Miss on Saturday afternoon. Otherwise, LSU just needs to pull off a win over struggling Texas A&M in the final week.

Stay tuned to CBS Sports for updates, highlights and takeaways from LSU at Arkansas.

LSU vs. Arkansas score: Live game updates, college football scores, NCAA top 25 highlights today

No. 7 LSU finds itself in a defensive battle at Arkansas, leading 6-3 at halftime. Through two quarters, the game has not been lacking for entertainment despite the low score as both teams have had to overcome mistakes with defenses making stops in tough situations. LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels started with an interception and a lost fumble in the first 11 minutes, but Arkansas responded in kind with a turnover on downs inside the 5-yard line plus a lost fumble early in the second quarter.

While Daniels is playing below his standard, Arkansas is very much in this game with its starter, KJ Jefferson, sidelined by injury. Backup Malik Hornsby has been a key to the Razorbacks ground game, but the passing attack is missing Jefferson badly as evidenced by the team having just 15 yards on 2 of 6 passing at halftime. Their defense, however, has been outstanding, totaling five sacks and six tackles for loss while holding LSU to 2 of 7 on third down.

Will an Arkansas team dealing with significant injury issues put an end to LSU’s hot streak, or will the Tigers avoid a letdown after an emotional win over the Crimson Tide and retain the top stop in the SEC West? CBS Sports will be with you the whole way with updates, highlights and analysis from LSU at Arkansas.

Chicago Cubs expressing interest in Dansby Swanson

The Chicago Cubs and the Atlanta Braves are in….very different spots going into the 2023 season. The Braves are trying to keep the band together, win their division yet again, and make another deep run in the playoffs. The Cubs, on the other hand, are coming off a season where they were 14 games under .500, have recently let a lot of their veteran talent move on, and have a rotation that can best be described as “speculative”.

Given that, it is a little surprising that the Cubs are thought to be looking to be aggressive this winter. It goes without saying that the Cubs have a rabid fanbase that wants a winner on the field, but that hasn’t stopped the Chicago’s ownership and front office from making unpopular moves that made the team worse in the short-term. However, it has been consistently reported for a while that the Cubs are looking to make a splash, particularly at shortstop, and one of the players they are eyeballing may be familiar to Braves fans.

The Cubs interest in Dansby Swanson does make a certain amount of sense

This is obviously just a list of names at the top of the shortstop market, so there is no need for Braves’ fans to set Truist on fire or anything quite yet, but it is notable that Morosi mentioned specifically that the Cubs have been in touch with Dansby’s agents.

Moreover, Dansby may be exactly the sort of shortstop that the Cubs want to target. They clearly want someone of real value to man the position and guys like Turner and Correa may be more than they are comfortable spending until they can figure out how to win games again. Players like Dansby (or Bogaerts) may be more in their wheelhouse as they try to solidify shortstop while rebuilding the rest of the roster around them.

Stay tuned, Braves fans. It is only going to get wilder from here.

Astros To Re-Sign Rafael Montero

Rafael Montero and the Astros are in agreement on a three-year, $34.5MM deal, reports Jeff Passan of ESPN. Montero is the third elite reliever to fall off the board early, after the Padres re-signed Robert Suarez and the Mets held on to Edwin Diaz.

It’s a remarkable deal considering Montero has amassed just 0.1 bWAR over his career and had an ERA north of six just last year, but speaks to how good he’s looked since landing in Houston, and the early value teams are placing on high end relief pitching.

Montero, 32, tossed 68 1/3 innings out of Houston’s pen this year in addition to six innings thrown late last year after coming over from Seattle, posting a 2.18 ERA in that time with a 26.8% strikeout rate and an 8.6% walk rate. He’d posted an ugly 7.27 ERA (albeit with decent peripherals) in Seattle last year, before the Astros acquired him as part of the Kendall Graveman deal. In Houston, he’s leaned more heavily on his fastball, and cut back on his sinker and slider usage. Hitters have found it incredibly difficult to square up his pitches, and he gave up just three home runs all year (and one more in the playoffs) and ranked in the 91st percentile for average exit velocity.

It’s certainly worth nothing that this isn’t the first time Montero has had a bit of success, only to crash not long after. The Rangers inked him to a minor league deal in 2019 after four unsuccessful years with the Mets that concluded with Tommy John surgery prior to the ’18 campaign. He turned into a valuable member of the Rangers bullpen that year, throwing 29 innings of 2.28 ERA ball. He regressed a bit in 2020, but the Rangers were still able to flip him to the Mariners for a couple of prospects – Andres Mesa and Jose Corniell – prior to the 2021 campaign, but things would unravel for him in Seattle.

While it’s easy to look at that 2019 season with the Rangers and draw similarities to his past season with the Astros in that it’s an isolated strong season amongst a wider portfolio of poor output, there’s plenty of evidence to suggest he’s turned a corner for good. For instance, in 2019 his peripherals were far less impressive than his actual output, and it was over a much smaller sample size (29 innings against 74 1/3 in Houston). Ultimately though, dishing out any sort of multi-year free agency deal to relievers comes with a large degree of risk, and given how tough relievers’ future performance is to predict, there’s no guarantees Montero performs like he did in 2022 over the life of this deal.

This deal locks up a key contributor from their World Series winning team, but it’s curious to see a major deal like this done one day after the team moved on from their general manager. Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reported that assistant GM Andrew Ball and senior director of baseball strategy Bill Firkus are running the day-to-day operations for the Astros after the departure of James Click, although Rome adds that that doesn’t necessarily mean those two were responsible for the Montero deal.

Houston’s projected payroll now sits at $164MM per RosterResource, about $15MM shy of their 2022 mark. There’s every chance they bring back Justin Verlander, while they could seek additions at center field, catcher and first base, so there’s a strong possibility their payroll comfortably eclipses the $179MM mark from 2022.

Their bullpen was one of the strengths of their championship roster this past season, and with the likes of Ryan Pressly, Bryan Abreu, Ryne Stanek, Hector Neris and the now-returning Montero it’s shaping up to be one of the best in baseball again.

It also bodes well for other top relievers on the market. Montero’s $34.5MM deal follows on from Suarez’ five-year, $46MM contract with the Padres and Diaz’s record-breaking five-year, $102MM deal with the Mets. On the whole, relievers are being paid handsomely to kick off free agency this year, and the agents of pitchers like Taylor Rogers and Kenley Jansen will surely be pointing teams to these deals as price points when going into negotiations.

WR Quentin Johnston game-time decision for TCU at Texas

AUSTIN — TCU wide receiver Quentin Johnston looms as a game-time decision for the No. 4 Horned Frogs at No. 18 Texas on Saturday night, sources told ESPN.

Johnston injured his ankle on TCU’s first possession at Texas Tech last week. He was limited in practice this week, according to sources, as he didn’t take part in any of TCU’s practices until Thursday.

The expectation around the program remains that Johnston will warm up and play, but his status appears to be based on how he feels Saturday night. TCU (9-0) is a seven-point underdog against the Longhorns (6-3).

Johnston has emerged as one of the most explosive and dynamic wide receivers in the country, as he’d caught touchdown passes in four consecutive games prior to his early exit against Texas Tech. He has shot up to No. 20 on ESPN NFL draft analyst Mel Kiper’s Big Board, and he could end up rising as he’s Kiper’s fourth-ranked wide receiver.

Johnston has risen up draft boards in part because he fits the archetype of an NFL receiver at 6-foot-4, 215 pounds and still possesses top-end speed at that size. On the season, Johnston has 42 catches for 650 yards.

Johnston had one of the most impressive back-to-back performances of the season in October when he torched Kansas for 206 yards on 14 catches and grabbed eight balls for 180 yards against Oklahoma State the following week.

He earned first-team All-Big 12 honors in 2021 after compiling 634 receiving yards as a sophomore. Johnston is a former verbal commit to Texas, but he ended up flipping late to TCU in December of 2019 after a flurry of changes on the Texas coaching staff.

College football picks, schedule: Predictions against the spread, odds for top 25 games in Week 11

Three weeks remain in college football’s 2022 regular season, which means divisional races are heating up, conference championship pictures are clarifying and teams legitimately eligible for the College Football Playoff are dwindling with every Saturday that passes. Such will be the case again in Week 11 with multiple top-25 showdowns set to clarify these scenarios.

The most notable showdowns come from the SEC where No. 7 LSU hopes to avoid taking a step back from its thrilling overtime win against Alabama when it visits Arkansas. Despite the Tigers suddenly becoming the talk of the nation in Year 1 under coach Brian Kelly, their grip on the SEC West is tenuous. LSU will need to win out to secure a spot in the SEC Championship Game (likely against No. 1 Georgia), and that begins by avoiding a road upset against an Arkansas team that can play up to anyone.

Speaking of the No. 9 Crimson Tide, barring an absolute miracle, their SEC and CFP hopes are dashed. That is not the case for No. 11 Ole Miss, which hosts Alabama in the SEC on CBS Game of the Week with Rebels coach Lane Kiffin looking to get his first win over Nick Saban. Unlike the Tide, the Rebels still have a shot to win the SEC West. Ole Miss will have to beat Alabama to put itself in position, though it will also need LSU to take an L as the regular season concludes.

Saturday’s nightcap is a huge Big 12 showdown as newly minted No. 4 TCU visits No. 18 Texas in perhaps its toughest remaining test over the final three weeks. The Longhorns have been playing much better in the second half of the season, and with former Horned Frogs coach Gary Patterson on staff as an analyst, they will certainly have a handle on what TCU brings to the table. If the Frogs can get past the ‘Horns, only Baylor and Iowa State remain as TCU eyes a spot in the playoff.

Be sure to stick with CBS Sports throughout the day for college football coverage from the opening kickoff onward. Let’s take a look at our expert picks for the best games in Week 11.

Odds via Caesars Sportsbook | All times Eastern

Missouri at No. 5 Tennessee

Featured Game | Tennessee Volunteers vs. Missouri Tigers

Noon | CBS, CBSSports.comCBS Sports App — Aside from a confounding 40-12 loss at Kansas State in Week 2, Missouri has been excellent defensively. Even in that game, the Tigers allowed just 336 total yards as they were hampered by a 4-to-1 deficit in turnover margin. The last seven games Missouri has played have finished within the confines of this spread, and the Tigers should be able to keep things respectable again here. Missouri is tied for 100th nationally in turnover margin, but that has to flip at some point. If the Tigers keep their turnover woes under control, they’ll keep the game close. Prediction: Missouri +21 — David Cobb

No. 7 LSU at Arkansas

Featured Game | Arkansas Razorbacks vs. LSU Tigers

Noon | ESPN, fuboTV (Try for free) —  A letdown spot on the road against a talented opponent is a natural trap game opportunity, but the status of K.J. Jefferson makes the upset chance more tenuous. LSU has played inspired football since its early losses to Tennessee and Florida State, and there’s little reason to expect a Brian Kelly coached team to not play good, fundamental football in a critical game with CFP hopes. Prediction: LSU -3 — Shehan Jeyarajah

No. 9 Alabama at No. 11 Ole Miss

Featured Game | Ole Miss Rebels vs. Alabama Crimson Tide

3:30 p.m. | CBS, CBSSports.comCBS Sports App — Take Ole Miss and the points, but you won’t need them because the Rebels are winning this one outright. The multi-dimensional Rebels rushing attack will have success early, draw Alabama defenders into the box, and Jaxson Dart will hit shots over the top. At the same time, the Ole Miss defense will have enough success getting pressure that it will put Alabama behind the sticks. That’s bad news for an Alabama team that has not been crisp on the road. Prediction: Ole Miss +12 — Barrett Sallee

No. 1 Georgia at Mississippi State

Featured Game | Mississippi State Bulldogs vs. Georgia Bulldogs

7 p.m. | ESPN, fuboTV (Try for free) — Mississippi State has failed to cover the spread in three straight games while Georgia seems to be hitting its peak here in the most important part of the season. Georgia’s defense has performed at an even higher level than Alabama’s, and the Crimson Tide were able to put on tape the way to shut this year’s Mississippi State offense down. I think the Athens-based Bulldogs will be able to do the same. Prediction: Georgia -16 — Chip Patterson

No. 4 TCU at No. 18 Texas

Featured Game | Texas Longhorns vs. TCU Horned Frogs

7:30 p.m. | ABC, fuboTV (Try for free) — The Longhorns rate well in most analytic systems thanks to a close game against Alabama and a blowout of a quarterback-less Oklahoma team. However, the Longhorns also have losses to Texas Tech and Oklahoma State, along with a close game against Iowa State. One of these teams knows how to finish games, and it’s the boys in purple. Prediction: TCU +7 — Jeyarajah
