‘The Lady and the Dale’ Reveals Tucker Carlson’s Dad Once Led Trans Bullying of Grifter Elizabeth Carmichael

If you’re going to be a criminal, it’s wise to maintain a low profile. Alas, playing it safe isn’t in most lawbreakers’ DNA, and that was certainly the case with Geraldine Elizabeth “Liz” Carmichael, who in 1974 took the world by storm by taking on Detroit’s “Big Three” auto manufacturers with the Twentieth Century Motor Car Corporation and its flagship product: the Dale, a three-wheeled car that promised to deliver 70 miles per gallon, thus making it the ideal vehicle for an oil crisis-wracked America. By the time Liz launched this dodgy creation, she had already begun transitioning into a woman, which added even more fuel to the media-frenzy fire that would soon engulf her.

Directed by Nick Cammilleri and Zackary Drucker, and executive produced by Jay and Mark Duplass (Wild Wild Country), HBO’s four-part docuseries The Lady and the Dale (debuting Jan. 31) begins with the rollicking early years of Liz’s life, when prior to transitioning she married and abandoned two wives—and the multiple kids she had with them—before shacking up with third spouse Vivian. They had five children together, and as Vivian’s brother Charles remembers, Liz (then known as Jerry) was always a gregarious sort of grifter, adept at creating fake identities and swindling suckers (especially businesses) out of their hard-earned cash. Given Liz’s fondness for con-artist schemes, it wasn’t long before the Michael clan was fleeing from federal agents thanks to an elaborate counterfeiting ruse. Present-day recollections from daughter Candi paint a picture of an itinerant life on the run, such that she and her siblings’ birth certificates boast phony names—a situation that still causes them headaches.

The Lady and the Dale spends almost its entire first installment on Liz’s wild backstory, which is enlivened by pop-up book-esque animated reenactment sequences created with old photos of the players in question. It’s a novel stylistic twist that further conveys the craziness of the Michaels’ early years, in which family gatherings were organized through coded newspaper messages, and everyone had to be ready, at a moment’s notice, to take flight in the middle of the night to a new town and home. In short, Liz was an inveterate charlatan. She was also a trans woman, and while evading authorities, she slowly began the process of transitioning—a development that was readily accepted by her children and, after some minor initial hesitation, her wife Vivian.

Following a surgical procedure in Tijuana, Liz began living publicly as a woman, and in 1973, while working at a marketing company, she discovered an invention that was as brash and unconventional as she was: the Dale, a three-wheeled car (created by Dale Clifft) that she immediately decided would be her revolutionary ticket to world domination. After overhauling Clifft’s original designs to make the Dale more attractive (replete with a canary yellow paint job), Liz got a prototype into the Los Angeles Auto Show. Then, she went on a press blitz to announce her intentions to take on America’s auto bigwigs—including by getting the Dale featured on The Price is Right. Before long, Liz was a front-page sensation, with the uniqueness of her product matched only by the boldness of her claims.

Considering Liz’s criminal past—and her ongoing status as a federal fugitive—it will come as no surprise to learn that she soon began enlisting the assistance of mob figures for the Twentieth Century Motor Car Corporation, whose name came from Atlas Shrugged, written by libertarian Liz’s favorite author, Ayn Rand. She also began taking customer deposits for the in-production car, which she was supposed to hold in an escrow account, but which she instead used to finance her upstart venture. This was a clear case of fraud, especially since the makeshift Dale—being constructed by a few random engineers in hodgepodge fashion with borrowed parts—was doomed to fail. A series of investigative stories by KABC reporter Dick Carlson soon exposed the sham, leading to criminal prosecution and, after Liz was convicted, yet another flight from justice and her shady, quasi-illegal business operation.

The Lady and the Dale thrives when it remains focused on Liz’s audacious scam, bolstered by first-hand accounts from relatives and colleagues who describe her as both a wily crook and loving wife and mother. For the majority of its first three episodes, it proves an entertainingly gonzo portrait of rebellious self-definition, as Liz strives to buck legal and social norms to make something of herself. Unfortunately, though, by the time its final installment rolls around, Cammilleri and Drucker’s series becomes infatuated with eliciting sympathy for its subject as a victim of intolerant anti-trans discrimination, largely because the media’s attitude toward Liz—led by Carlson, whose son Tucker carries on his ugly legacy on Fox News—was to ridicule and demean her as a man posing as a woman in order to elude law enforcement. (Dick Carlson eventually won a Peabody for his transphobic coverage of Carmichael and would later make headlines for outing the transgender tennis player Renee Richards.)

…the media’s attitude toward Liz—led by Carlson, whose son Tucker carries on his ugly legacy on Fox News—was to ridicule and demean her as a man posing as a woman in order to elude law enforcement.

That Liz was treated unfairly (and sometimes horribly) by journalists is undeniable from the archival footage on display. Yet via talking-head commentary and a score that makes its celebratory attitude clear, The Lady and the Dale attempts to depict Liz as an unjustly persecuted trans outlaw hero, which simply doesn’t jibe with her considerable rap sheet. To do this, it downplays and/or rationalizes her criminality, which only further mires it in messy and dubious logic. Most confounding of all, the series argues that Liz’s trans identity was not a deception and thus not related to her criminality (which makes sense), only to then turn around and contend that, had she grown up in a different, more tolerant era, she might have led a very different, law-abiding life—a contradictory stance which winds up suggesting that there is a link between her trans-ness and chronic charlatanism.

Consequently, The Lady and the Dale eventually loses the thread, culminating with a history lesson about maligned trans men and women that, by its very inclusion, casts Liz as a likeminded oppressed trailblazer rather than as the outlandish grifter she was until her dying day. It’s ultimately so consumed with imbuing its material with hagiographic import—with making Liz’s saga meaningful—that it forgets what made it compelling in the first place.

Peacock Becomes WWE Network Exclusive U.S. Streaming Distributor

NBCUniversal’s Peacock soon will be the only place to watch WWE Network in the U.S.

WWE and NBCU reached a multiyear agreement giving Peacock exclusive streaming rights to WWE Network for American viewers. The over-the-top wrestling entertainment service’s existing U.S. subscribers (about 1.1 million in total) will be migrated over to Peacock Premium, where they’ll continue to get access to WWE Network but will pay 50% less per month while getting full access to the version of the Peacock Premium tier with ads.

Peacock will launch WWE Network on March 18, 2021, when Peacock will begin the rollout of more than 17,000 hours of WWE Network new, original, and library programming (both on-demand and on a new 24-hour channel).

The NBCU streamer will have all WWE live events — for no additional charge — including WrestleMania and SummerSlam, with Fastlane the first event to stream on Peacock on Sunday, March 21. (WWE fans who would prefer to order events via traditional pay-per-view will still have that option.)

WWE Network will be available on Peacock Premium (which includes ads) for $4.99 per month, half the price of WWE Network’s current $9.99/month pricing. The no-commercials Peacock Premium Plus plan, which costs $9.99/month, also will include WWE Network.

The companies plans to share details of how existing WWE Network subscribers in the U.S. will be switched to Peacock (e.g., whether they will be automatically subscribed to Peacock) in the next few weeks. Nothing will change for WWE Network subscribers outside the U.S.

Financial terms of the Peacock-WWE Network pact were not disclosed. “We feel great about the financials. Otherwise we wouldn’t have done the deal,” said Nick Khan, WWE’s president and chief revenue officer, who joined the company last August from CAA. “To have WrestleMania in particular — which is our Super Bowl — available [for no extra cost] on Peacock is quite different from other models you’re seeing.”

For Peacock, the WWE Network is “a transformative addition,” said Rick Cordella, Peacock’s EVP and chief revenue officer. “We have a lot of data that shows live events and sports drives a lot of user acquisition,” he said. “The bet is that there exists a much larger total available audience [for WWE programming] than is on WWE Network today.”

NBCU and WWE have been partners for almost 30 years, starting in 1993 with “Monday Night Raw” on USA. “WWE has always tapped into the cultural zeitgeist with spectacular live events and larger-than-life characters, and we are thrilled to be the exclusive home for WWE Network and its millions of fans across the country,” said Cordella.

In the third quarter of 2020, WWE Network had average paid subscribers of 1.6 million, down about 60,000 from the prior quarter but an increase of 6% year over year — marking the service’s first annual growth since Q1 of 2019. The entertainment company originally launched WWE Network in February 2014, when it ended its traditional pay-per-view events business.

Starting in 2022, WWE will produce “one signature documentary annually” for the WWE Network on Peacock. Also available on WWE Network are about 100 hours of original series like “Steve Austin’s Broken Skull Sessions,” “Undertaker: The Last Ride” and the recently premiered “WWE Icons”; in-ring shows like NXT, NXT UK and WWE 205 Live, as well as replays of “Raw” and “SmackDown”; WWE Network archives, including every WWE, WCW and ECW pay-per-view event in history; and documentaries including “WWE 24,” “WWE Untold” and “WWE 365.”

Peacock, which NBCU launched nationwide in July 2020, attracted nearly 22 million user “sign-ups” in its first six months of wide release, according to the company. Eligible customers of Comcast Xfinity X1 and Flex and Cox’s Contour — a total of about 24 million households — get Peacock Premium included at no additional cost.

Peacock’s content lineup includes a slate of originals, libraries of TV shows — including all episodes of “The Office” and “Yellowstone” — and films from Universal Pictures, Focus Features, DreamWorks Animation, Illumination, and other studios. In addition, the OTT service provides news, sports, late-night, Spanish-language, and reality from across NBCUniversal.

Peacock Premium now offers more than 47,000 hours of programming. NBCU also offers a free, ad-supported version of Peacock with a trimmed-down bucket of content.

‘Cinemas will die’: Bond girl Valerie Leon insists No Time To Die should NOT be streamed

Former Bond girl Valerie Leon has insisted No Time To Die should not be streamed online after the film was delayed yet again by another six months.

The upcoming James Bond blockbuster was previously slated to be released on April 2 after already being hit by several changes due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain, Valerie, 77, took part in a debate on whether the film should be streamed and insisted cinemas will ‘die’ without major films.

Opinion: Former Bond girl Valerie Leon has insisted No Time To Die should not be streamed online after the film was delayed yet again by another six months

She said: ‘I disagree totally that they should be streamed. The franchise is so special, so special. The anticipation of waiting for it to be released in the cinemas.’

Fellow actor Mark Ebulue who also took part in the debate and disagreed, saying: ‘I think we need it now, the demand for these movies to be seen and consumed are higher than where or how we see them.’

But Valerie, who appeared in Never Say Never Again in 1983 alongside Sean Connery, believes cinemas could ‘die’ if blockbusters are simply given to streaming services.

Asked if she misses going to the cinema amid the pandemic, she said: ‘Yes, enormously.

New date: The upcoming James Bond blockbuster was previously slated to be released on April 2 after already being hit by several changes due to the coronavirus pandemic

‘The cinemas will die if they don’t have major films in them. This pandemic will end at some point.’

Valerie played the unnamed Lady in the Bahamas in Never Say Never Again where she flirted with Bond, with the pair ending up in bed together.

It comes after the news that No Time To Die is delayed again, meaning fans will have to wait another six months to see the latest movie in the spy franchise.

A new date for the movie was shared on the film’s official Twitter account, revealing the latest expected date is October 8, 2021.

Valerie said: ‘I disagree totally that they should be streamed. The franchise is so special, so special. The anticipation of waiting for it to be released in the cinemas’

The film, directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga, was originally scheduled for release in April 2020, but was pushed back to November before the release was changed once again to April 2021 in light of the coronavirus pandemic.

It had already been speculated that the film would be pushed back again when Dutch publication BN DeStem recently claimed that, according to cinema owner Carlo Lambregts, the movie would be delayed to November.

Deadline also reported that promotional partners had already been informed that Daniel Craig’s final outing as 007 is poised to change release dates.

Role: Valerie played the unnamed Lady in the Bahamas in Never Say Never Again where she flirted with Bond, with the pair ending up in bed together

No Time To Die is the 25th film in the franchise, and finds Bond after he has left active service and is enjoying a tranquil life in Jamaica when his old friend Felix Leiter, played by Jeffrey Wright, from the CIA turns up asking for help.

Leaving his seemingly happy life with Madeleine (Lea Seydoux), Bond returns to the field to face Safin (Rami Malek) who is armed with a new dangerous technology that could impact the world.

Producer Barbara Broccoli has already teased what fans can expect and said that the movie will deliver a satisfying ending for Daniel’s Bond.

Changes: The movie was previously supposed to come out on April 2, however its original release was supposed to be in April 2020 (pictured Daniel Craig)

Speaking on the official James Bond podcast, she said: ‘It’s a culmination of everything that his portrayal of the character has been through and it ties up all the storylines. It’s a pretty epic film, I have to say.’

After pushing the film’s release back to April 2021 in October, MGM quashed rumours about whether it was thinking of offering the film to streaming services for a $600 million one-year licensing deal.

‘We do not comment on rumors. The film is not for sale. The film’s release has been postponed until April 2021 in order to preserve the theatrical experience for moviegoers,’ an MGM spokesperson told Variety.

Delays: Deadline reported promotional partners have already been informed the film is poised to change release dates (pictured Lea Seydoux)

Not coming soon: MGM quashed rumours in October last year about whether it was thinking of offering the film to streaming services for a $600 million one-year licensing deal

Bloomberg had reported that Netflix, Amazon and Apple had all been approached about the possibility of the movie being offered up for Premium VOD.

However, according to Deadline.com, none of the streaming services were willing to put up more than half the amount the studio was seeking.

Lead actor Craig did defend James Bond producers’ decision to delay the premiere of the new film in October last year.

Speaking on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Craig said: ‘This thing is just bigger than all of us. We want to release the movie at the same time all around the world and this isn’t the right time. So fingers cross April 2 is going to be our date.’

The new release will be Craig’s final outing as the spy after landing the role for 2006’s Casino Royale. He has also starred in Quantum of Solace, Skyfall and Spectre.

During his last ever Bond interview for GQ magazine in March 2020, the actor candidly discussed his anxieties over the script and admitted feeling ‘physically very low’ was the reason behind the upcoming film’s five year delay since Spectre.

Newbie? Lashana Lynch, who plays Nomi,  joins new Bond Girl Ana De Armas as Paloma (R)

He told GQ magazine: ‘I was never going to do one again. I was like, “Is this work really genuinely worth this, to go through this, this whole thing?”

‘And I didn’t feel… I felt physically really low. So the prospect of doing another movie was just, like, off the cards. And that’s why it has been five years.’

Craig said that the ‘physicality’ of Bond is “a preparation, in a way”, because he would not get the script beforehand.

‘It’s making my head go, “This is what it’s going to be”.’

Trying to prepare for a role in one of the most popular film franchises in modern cinema without a script also caused him to have anxiety.

The man in the white mask: Rami’s Safin seems to be heavily scarred and covering much of his face in a scene from the hotly anticipated release

He said: ‘I have suffered from it in the past. I have suffered because it’s been like, “I can’t cope. I can’t deal with this”.

Looking ahead to life after Bond, Craig – who is married to actress Rachel Weisz – said that his future may involve ‘having another kid, maybe just being older’.

Meanwhile, last year, actress Lea Seydoux gave fans an idea of what to expect in No Time To Die ahead of its release.

She described her character’s relationship with Bond as ‘a modern love story’, explaining fans will see a completely new side to the agent, as Bond settles down with Dr. Madeleine Swann after retiring from active service.

Speaking on the Official James Bond Podcast, Lea explained why it was so important to see Bond fall in love again after having his heart broken by Vespa (played by Eva Green) in 2005’s Casino Royale.

What to expect: Actress Lea Seydoux teased that No Time To Die will show a new side to Bond after he settles down with Dr. Madeleine Swann after retiring from active service

She said: ‘I think that it’s also because of Bond and we needed Madeline to tell Bond’s story I mean it was important to see Bond in love again because he had this relationship with Vespa but she betrayed him.

‘But this time I think she’s the real love in a way, I think it’s really the film is a love story it’s a story between the two of them so it’s very unusual for a Bond film to see James Bond in love right? And I think it’s quite modern in a way.

‘In this film it’s even more psychological and more emotional and I think that it’s something that Daniel as James Bond created with this character.

‘He created a character that is more vulnerable and who has flaws and I think that’s what we like as an audience and it’s true that James Bond is like a… it’s not a real world right? But what we like is that in this world we can relate to the characters.’

Holding out: The film was originally scheduled for release in April 2020, but was pushed back to November before the release was changed to April 2021 due to the COVID-19 crisis

‘Bridgerton’ fans spot blunder in Netflix show — a yellow traffic line

CLOSE

Netflix announced that they have crossed the 200 million subscribers milestone, thanks to a strong fourth quarter of 2020.

Video Elephant

Eagle-eyed fans have spotted a modern-day blunder in the opening moments of the runaway hit Netflix period drama “Bridgerton.”

The torrid romance, based on the first of eight novels by Julia Quinn, has proved a must-watch escape for many since its Christmas debut, and has been renewed for a second Netflix season.

While the tale of sex and scandal is set in Regency era London, early 19th century, a painted yellow traffic line was clear on the road used, for dramatic purposes, by horse-drawn carriages.

Just as fans noticed the Starbucks cup and then the water bottle in the finale of “Game of Thrones,” “Bridgerton” fans drew the line at this error (it is at the 3:20 mark in the episode).

“Given that characters were still travelling around by horse-drawn carriage, there’s no way that the inclusion would have been historically accurate or, we can presume, intentional,” wrote Britain’s Independent newspaper in first reporting the “Bridgerton” goof.

Loved ‘Bridgerton’?: Here are 5 great TV shows to watch while you wait for Season 2

“Really enjoying Bridgerton, but with the technology available to film makers these days, a yellow line?” wrote one Twitter user.

“Two episodes into #Bridgerton and I’ve so far spotted a single yellow line and a telecoms manhole cover. I didn’t realise the 19th Century Brits were such pioneers…” wrote another on Twitter.

Another Twitter user pointed out “a single yellow line parking restriction and a parking sign on a lamppost” among other small issues in the series. “Still a great one to watch though,” the user added.

USA TODAY has reached out to Netflix for comment.

Show creator Chris Van Dusen appeared on the “Today” show Thursday to discuss what fans can expect from season two.

“We are going to be starting filming later this spring in London, and we’re all so excited,” Van Dusen said. “I know the cast cannot wait to get back to it, and neither can I.”

Keira Knightley Will No Longer Do Sex Scenes Under “The Male Gaze” – Deadline

Keira Knightley is a versatile actress who has been seen in everything from blockbusters to indies to period films. Throughout her career, she has been in films where she has been seen nude and in sex scenes. Now, since having children, she added a no-nudity clause to her contract. During an episode of the Chanel Connects podcast, the Oscar-nominated actress talked to filmmaker Lulu Wang and producer/journalist Diane Solway about how she is no longer willing to do nude or sex scenes — specifically with male directors.

“It’s partly vanity and also it’s the male gaze,” she said on the podcast. “I feel very uncomfortable now trying to portray the male gaze.”

She understands that some directors need “somebody to look hot” and there are those “horrible sex scenes where you’re all greased up and everybody’s grunting”. For Knightley, she is at a point in her career where she is no longer interested in doing that.  She understands the value of these types of scenes but she said that they can find someone else.

“I’m too vain and the body has had two children now and I’d just rather not stand in front of a group of men naked,” she said.

Knightley isn’t totally opposed to nude scenes. She said she would feel different if it was a story about that journey of motherhood and body acceptance — but she said it would have to be with a female filmmaker.

“I don’t have an absolute ban,” said Knightley, “but I kind of do with men.”
