Misan Harriman, Harry and Meghan’s pregnancy photographer, shot to fame capturing the Black Lives Matter protests

Freed from the formalities that accompany a traditional royal baby announcement, Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, turned to a friend to reveal their news on Sunday.

The result was an understated, black-and-white portrait of the pair, gazing into each other’s eyes under a wintry sun, Meghan’s hand resting gently on a bump that had been hidden from public view until now.

But for the photographer who captured the shot, the announcement of the Sussexes’ second child was merely the latest milestone in a history-making career.

Misan Harriman, a friend of the couple, said he shot the image remotely on an iPad. Harriman is based in London, while the Sussexes live in California following their split from the British royal family last year.

Harriman’s image was released on Sunday. Credit: Twitter/@misanharriman

“Meg, I was there at your wedding to witness this love story begin, and my friend, I am honoured to capture it grow,” he wrote on social media following the release of the picture. “Congratulations to The Duke and Duchess of Sussex on this joyous news!”

Last year, Harriman became first Black photographer to shoot the cover for British Vogue’s all-important September Issue.

That spread featured footballer Marcus Rashford, model Adwoa Aboah and a number of other prominent campaigners, and was headlined “Activism Now: The Faces of Hope.”

It was a fitting assignment for Harriman, who only became a professional photographer in 2016 after a career in finance, and whose images of the Black Lives Matter protests shot him to prominence in 2020.

“Through my lens I have seen the beating heart of London,” Harriman told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour in August, after a number of pictures he took at protests in the city went viral.

One, which featured England youth hockey player Darcy Bourne, outside the US Embassy, holding up a sign reading “Why is ending racism a debate?,” came to symbolize the city’s demonstrations over the summer.

Misan Harriman: ‘My images are about hope’

“It feels like the winds of change have blown finally in the direction that I’ve been waiting for,” Harriman told CNN.

Both Harry and Meghan have spoken in support of the Black Lives Matter movement, and Harry has reflected on his own unconscious bias and on the historical acts of the British empire in subjugating Black populations around the world.
“I’ve had an awakening as such of my own, because I wasn’t aware of so many of the issues and so many of the problems within the UK, but also globally as well,” he said in October. “I thought I did but I didn’t.”

The shot of the couple was not the first time Harriman had been called to present a royal announcement to the world.

In 2019, he captured Princess Beatrice of York and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, again in black and white, to accompany the announcement of their engagement.
“You can’t be nervous when the subjects are so comfortable,” Harriman told Vogue of the experience. “I call my lens the truth seeker, and that is exactly what was captured, two people who have found their safe harbor in each other.”
And his photograph of Harry and Meghan also recalled — whether intentionally or not — an official picture from their wedding in 2018, shot by Alexi Lubomirski. That image also shows the couple lying in an embrace, moments after they married.

No due date was given in the couple’s announcement, but Harriman’s image showed a prominent bump.

“We can confirm that Archie is going to be a big brother,” a spokesperson for the pair said on Sunday. “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are overjoyed to be expecting their second child.”

The announcement came almost exactly 37 years after Prince Charles and Princess Diana announced they were expecting their second child — who happened to be Prince Harry.

Fired ‘Mandalorian’ star Gina Carano’s fans petition for Disney to bring her back to the ‘Star Wars’ franchise

Gina Carano’s fans are fighting for her to return to the “Star Wars” TV series, “The Mandalorian.”

The actress and former MMA fighter was recently fired from her role on the hit science fiction show over comments she made on social media. The move marked the latest in a slew of calls for Disney, whose streaming service Disney+ plays home to “The Mandalorian,” to fire Carano after she drew criticism for multiple posts on social media, including one in which she compared today’s political divide to the events in Nazi Germany.

A new Change.org petition started by fans calling for Lucasfilm and Disney to give Carano her part on the show back and to keep politics out of their artistic decisions going forward.

“I’m not going to say she was right or wrong with her views, but firing celebrities over their political views has been happening way too often, and once again, Hollywood has struck down another conservative,” the petition’s author writes. “What she said may have been a little extreme, and I can even see why some people may have been offended, but her tweet was not made to incite violence or to express discrimination or hatred of any sort to any particular group.”

‘THE MANDALORIAN’ FANS CALL ON DISNEY TO FIRE GINA CARANO AFTER TWEET MOCKING DEMOCRATS, MASKS

The description continues: “And now, once again, a beloved actress has been fired for speaking her mind. This petition is for the executives at Disney. Please, why can’t you just leave politics out of the industry and press on? ‘The Mandalorian’ is a fantastic show, and Gina Carano’s portrayal of Cara Dune is a joy to watch. The Mandalorian wouldn’t be the same without her.”

As of this writing, the petition has more than 4,000 of the 5,000 signatures it seeks.

Carano played Cara Dune in seven episodes of “The Mandalorian” across its first two seasons in 2019 and 2020. She was rumored to be the center of the upcoming “Mandalorian” spin-off “Rangers of the New Republic” at Disney+, but Disney has not announced casting for the show.

Despite calls to reinstate her, Carano has already moved on from “The Mandalorian.” According to Deadline, the actress is hitting back at Disney and cancel culture by partnering with Ben Shapiro’s The Daily Wire on a new movie project.

VINCE VAUGHN, ADAM SANDLER AND OTHER HOLLYWOOD CONSERVATIVES

“The Daily Wire is helping make one of my dreams — to develop and produce my own film — come true,” the star told the outlet in a statement. “I cried out and my prayer was answered. I am sending out a direct message of hope to everyone living in fear of cancellation by the totalitarian mob. I have only just begun using my voice which is now freer than ever before, and I hope it inspires others to do the same. They can’t cancel us if we don’t let them.”

Representatives for Carano did not immediately respond to Fox News’ request for comment.

While details about the project are being kept under wraps for now, the upcoming film will be released exclusively to The Daily Wire’s members in an effort to bolster its growing entertainment division.

‘MANDALORIAN’ STAR GINA CARANO SPEAKS OUT ABOUT SOCIAL MEDIA BACKLASH OVER CONSERVATIVE, ANTI-MASK TWEETS

“We could not be more excited to be working with Gina Carano, an incredible talent dumped by Disney and Lucasfilm for offending the authoritarian Hollywood Left. This is what Daily Wire exists to do: provide an alternative not just for consumers, but for creators who refuse to bow to the mob,” Shapiro said in a statement to Deadline.

“We’re eager to bring Gina’s talent to Americans who love her, and we’re just as eager to show Hollywood that if they want to keep cancelling those who think differently, they’ll just be helping us build the Xwing to take down their Death Star,” he continued.

Katharine McPhee, 36, hits back at troll who claimed she married David Foster, 71, for his money

Katharine McPhee hit back at trolls who claimed she’s only married to husband David Foster for his money.

The singer, 36, took to Instagram on Sunday to wish her other half, 71, a happy Valentine’s Day, but while she was delighted to celebrate the occasion some critics felt it necessary to troll her over their age difference.

The throwback photo of herself with David showed them enjoying a day at the beach, and she looked stunning in a red bikini as he kissed her neck.

‘Obviously!’ Katharine McPhee, 36, hit back at a troll who claimed she only married husband David Foster, 71, for his money after she shared sweet Valentine’s Day tribute on Sunday

She wrote: ‘My forever Valentine!! My best friend, my favorite person, my motivator, my everyday! @davidfoster I looove you cookie. #happyvalentinesday’

However, one troll hit out at her writing: ‘There for the money’, in response Katharine simply responded ‘obviously’.

It wasn’t all negative, though, as David’s daughter Erin shared an amusing comment that the photo was ‘a little sexual for me, but cute’, which amused Katharine as she responded with laughing emojis.

In another exchange, one fan of Katharine told her: ‘Bet you posted this photo crying for your body and missing it.’

She told them that she wasn’t ‘cuz I’m wearing red’, but a different fan criticised the commenter for their remark about her figure, slamming them for their ‘awful and stupid’ message that they saw as body shaming.

The first fan claimed they hadn’t shared the comment to ‘make her feel bad’, and Katharine reassured them that they hadn’t as she wrote back: ‘I actually got it. I liked the comment.’

Katharine is currently preparing to welcome her first child, after announcing her pregnancy with husband David.

The Smash star also took to her Instagram Story with a photo of Foster in a helicopter, writing: ‘Happy Valentine’s to my cutie pants! I love you Puppy.’

She later shared a throwback from their London wedding in June of 2019, as they shared their first kiss as husband and wife.

McPhee officially confirmed her pregnancy on Instagram in December with a mirror selfie of her baby bump wrapped in a baby blue overcoat, which she wore off one shoulder.

She appeared to hint that she’s having a boy, not only with the color of the coat, but with a blue butterfly emoji framed by two blue heart emojis in the caption.

The House Bunny actress first hinted at her pregnancy in October, taking to her Instagram Story with a gift from Italian aperitif brand Aperol.

Mom-to-be: A source told People in October that she and Foster are expecting their first child together (pictured in November, 2019)

She said in the unboxing video: ‘I won’t be drinking this for a while. Wink, wink. But I’m so excited.’

It came just days after a source told People that she and Foster were expecting their first child together.

Another insider told Us Weekly in August, that the couple was ‘definitely trying’ for a baby, and his daughters ‘fully expect [McPhee] to have a child and fully support it.’

Foster has five daughters from previous relationships, including Allison, 50, Amy, 47, Sara, 40, Erin, 38, and Jordan, 34.

John Oliver Talks Trump Impeachment Trial And How Democrats “Can’t Afford To Sit On Their Laurels Right Now”

There has been a lot of news since Last Week Tonight with John Oliver last aired in November such as the launch of the vaccine rollout, Wall Street’s Game Stop extravaganza and a week-long obsession with sea shanties — whatever that was about. That said, Oliver decided to usher in season 8 with one of the most pressing news stories from last week: Donald Trump’s impeachment trial.

“Democrats put on a compelling forensic case about Trump’s clear role as an instigator of the January 6 riots and in response, his attorneys mounted a defense that could charitably be characterized as ‘incoherent’ with lowlights ranging from one attorney reminiscing about his childhood record collection to another subjecting the senate to an 11 minute video of Democrats simply using the word ‘fight’,” said Oliver. It might have seemed that they might weren’t trying very hard but that might be because they didn’t really have to.” He pointed out that Ted Cruz even met with Trump’s lawyers while the case was still going on to tell them that the outcome was already practically determined and that they already won.

More from Deadline

“The thing is, he was right,” admitted Oliver. He added that Republicans were going to acquit the former Celebrity Apprentice host no matter what is a “depressing sign of how deep Trumpism runs in their party.” However, at the state level, it’s even worse.

More than a dozen state legislators participated in the “Stop the Steal” rally preceding the riots and one of them, Derrick Evans, a newly elected West Virginia state legislator actually made it inside and claimed he was a member of media to “film history”, the footage he filmed seemed to speak otherwise as he was seen yelling “Trump!” and delightfully participating in the insurrection.

Evans has since resigned — but there are more.

Oregon’s GOP put out a statement saying that the riots were a “false flag” operation designed to discredit Trump while Michigan’s top elected Republican Mike Shirkey went on tape to spread false claims saying that the deadly riots were a hoax and it was prearranged by someone funding it even though Trump who repeatedly tweeted about the January 6 protest saying things like “Be there, will be wild”.

Meanwhile, Arizona’s Republican party censured three members for not sufficiently supporting Trump including Cindy McCain. They also retweeted and tweeted out messages that helped fuel the fire that would later erupt on January 6 including a quote from the 2008 Rambo movie that read: “This is what we do, who we are. Live for nothing, or die for something” in regards to the Stop the Steal campaign.

In addition, Republican Senators in Arizona have also tried to hold the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors in contempt for refusing to turn over voting ballots and machines for inspection. A GOP lawmaker in Arizona also filed a bill that would allow the legislature to revoke election certification. In other words, if this were a law in November, the state would have given the electoral votes to Trump.

Republicans across the country have still responded to what has been called the “most secure election in U.S. history” by pushing laws that will continue to make voting more difficult. Arizona has presented 19 restrictive bills to voting rights while 33 states have introduced over 165 restrictive bills this year.

Luckily, there is H.R.1 and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act that can curb all this voter suppression — but there’s a catch. Those bills have a good chance of getting enacted if they end the filibuster. To do this, all Democrats must be on board — Joe Manchin does not want to kill the filibuster. That makes things difficult.

“It’s bad enough [he’s] defending the filibuster to defend the legacy of Robert C. Byrd, a man who literally used to try and block the original Voting Rights Act in 1964,” Oliver said. Byrd used the thing Manchin is advocating for in the worst possible way.

“It’d be like promoting Zoom by reminding everyone that Jeffrey Toobin used it,” quipped Oliver.

In addition to Manchin, Oliver points out that Democrats like Kyrsten Sinema and Dianne Feinstein have defended the filibuster while President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have remained “lukewarm” on the issue.

“Democrats simply cannot afford to rest on their laurels right now — Republicans definitely aren’t!” he insisted. “They made it abundantly clear they’re willing to take things to drastic levels and Democrats just don’t seem remotely prepared to meet that threat right now.”

Claudia Conway Goes Hollywood, Surprises ‘American Idol’ Judges With Adele and Emotional Confession

Claudia Conway, like everyone else who auditioned on Sunday’s American Idol premiere, wants a golden ticket to Hollywood—but unlike most of her peers, everyone already knows who this teenager is.

Kellyanne and George Conway’s daughter first announced she’d auditioned for the singing competition series in November on TikTok, where she’s gained a massive following over the past year. Claudia’s social media presence has exposed strife within her family, especially between her and her mother, including allegations of abuse. Perhaps that’s why judge Katy Perry asked immediately upon Claudia’s arrival, “Are you okay?”

“No,” Claudia replied. “No but yes.”

When judge and country singer Luke Bryan asked what he was missing, Claudia replied, “My parents are high profile political figures. My mother is Kellyanne Conway. She worked for Trump. And my dad’s George Conway. He worked against Trump.”

“It’s a lot,” Claudia said. “But you know, I only want to spread love, and I love a compromise, and I do disagree with my mom and dad… I had to move to Washington, D.C. when I was 12 and I hated it. When your mom is working for the President of the United States, who you very much disagree with, it’s really hard.”

Claudia’s American Idol visit is a complicated proposition. Given the platform television has already begun to provide former Trump associates to start their rebrands, it seems more than fair to feel conflicted as Claudia takes center stage on ABC. While her association with her parents is not her fault, her presence on the show nonetheless also grants her mother a branding opportunity that reminds us all what got her there in the first place.

Although Katy Perry gets in a few gentle digs at Kellyanne Conway’s expense—like, by asking her daughter, “Does she still hug you?”—Conway also appears on screen as she and Claudia speak virtually ahead of the audition. And in this moment, she plays the warm, cuddly, doting mother.

“This is your time to shine,” Conway tells her daughter. “But remember, honey—winners are people who are willing to lose.”

It’s almost enough to make you forget the oft-worrisome conflicts Claudia has posted to her TikTok.

The Conways appear to be presenting a more united front these days. As People notes, Claudia said in a TikTok video last month of her relationship with her mother, “We fight like mothers and daughters, but we also love like mothers and daughters, and I do love her.”

During her American Idol audition Claudia added, “She loves me; I love her. I just feel like our relationship is a little iffy. Most of my life, my feelings have been suppressed. So then I got on social media, and I was like, ‘Well damn, now my voice is being heard.’ You know?”

George Conway, meanwhile, spent his daughter’s American Idol audition alternately beaming and crying.

Claudia, meanwhile, told the judges that by appearing on the show, she wants to “get out of the controversy, get out of the drama, get out of the politics… and let people know that I am a singer, and this is what I want to do.”

“You dad’s your dad, and your mom’s your mom,” Perry said. “Who is Claudia?”

The first song Claudia tried out on judges: “Love on the Brain” by Rihanna, which fell flat. But she had also prepared “When We Were Young” by Adele—which she sang only after Perry instructed her to sing it “like you lost your youth because you weren’t able to experience it on your own with all the noise.” Subtle!

“You dad’s your dad, and your mom’s your mom,” Perry said. “Who is Claudia?”

After Claudia’s second take, Luke Bryan said he thought her voice was limited due to her young age, and voted “No.” Perry and Lionel Ritchie, however, both voted “yes,” granting Claudia her shot.

“There’s a lot of noise in your life,” Perry told Claudia. “You have to calm the storm that is around you. Meaning, before you sing, you need to get off your phone. You need to stop reading your comments. Push it aside. Because if not, you may not ever rise above your dad or your mom. It’s your choice.”

Kat Dennings Signed an NDA and Had a ‘Secretive’ Meeting for Marvel Series

Kat Dennings has emerged as a key character in WandaVision, not only answering a lot of fans’ questions within the universe, but also providing much-needed comic relief in the Marvel Cinematic Universe television series. In a new interview, Dennings explained that she didn’t know much about WandaVision. When she knew that she was going to be on one of the Disney+ shows, she actually thought it could be a different one.

Kat Dennings is Darcy Lewis in ‘WandaVision’

With episode 4 of the show, the MCU officially reintroduced to Randall Park’s Jimmy Woo, who was last seen in Ant-Man and the Wasp, and Dennings’ Darcy Lewis, who was last seen in Thor: The Dark World.

Wandavision stars Elizabeth Olson and Paul Bettany as the titular Wanda Maximoff and Vision, as well as Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau, and Kathryn Hahn as Agnes.

According to the official logline provided by Marvel and Disney+, “the series is a blend of classic television and the Marvel Cinematic Universe in which Wanda Maximoff and Vision—two super-powered beings living idealized suburban lives—begin to suspect that everything is not as it seems.”

Kat Dennings on being brought back to the MCU for ‘WandaVision’

In a recent interview, Dennings talked about being asked back for WandaVision and how she thought that she would be comnig back for a different show.

“There were two elements to this process. For me, one was just getting the call that they wanted me back, which was already a huge surprise,” said the actress. “And then hearing that it was WandaVision because I was aware of, you know, their new shows that they were all coming out with. And I was like, ‘Oh, it’s gotta be one of those, but I wonder which one it is. WandaVision was the one I least expected because Darcy Lewis has had no interaction with the world around the show.”

Kat Dennings was so surprised at the plans for the show

Dennings then explained how she went in a conference room and signed an NDA before she really knew the details of what would be going on.

“So this was a real left turn. And the process really was, I got the call didn’t know anything, [I] only kind of knew which show it was,” she explained. “And then I went to a very secretive conference room. I signed an NDA in the lobby, went into the room, and on the walls were all of the references and all of the things that they were planning forward. And it was crazy.”

Even after seeing the references, Dennings still had no idea what the show was planning but was ready for it all.

“I mean, I just was like, ‘What is this? This is like so surprising,” she continued. “So they’ve really pulled it off. And I’m so excited to be here, honestly.”

‘Now my voice is being heard’

Claudia Conway tries out for ‘American Idol.’ (Photo: Christopher Willard via Getty Images)

When we last left American Idol, in the middle of a dystopian 2020, Season 18’s production had been derailed by the coronavirus pandemic — forcing the finalists to remotely perform in their living rooms, converted garages, and backyards, with eventual champion Just Sam celebrating her victory alone in a corporate apartment via Zoom. Nearly a year later, on Sunday’s Season 19 premiere, the show was mostly back to normal (“Dreams are not canceled!” declared judge Katy Perry), although Ryan Seacrest was sporting a lush quarantine beard and many of the auditioners were virtually accompanied by their family and friends, who loomed large on an “immersive” digital wall.

And there on that billboard-sized Big Brother wall, in a viral moment totally on-brand for a dystopian 2021, was Kellyanne Conway, former White House senior counselor to Donald Trump, telling her 16-year-old social media star daughter Claudia, “This is your time to shine, but remember: Winners are people who are willing to lose.”

Claudia Conway gets a message from her mother Kellyanne Conway on ‘American Idol.’ (Photo: ABC)

The timing and wording of this (sur)reality TV scene was certainly interesting, considering that Sunday’s Idol premiere, featuring Claudia Conway’s much-hyped audition, aired just one day after Trump’s acquittal in his second impeachment trial. The ex-president had been accused by House impeachment managers of inciting an insurrection by claiming that the 2020 presidential election had been stolen from him — i.e., Trump was someone who was not willing to lose. Claudia, returning to Twitter after a nearly six-month hiatus on Saturday to promote her Idol appearance, had actually tweeted, “Side note but how in the world could Trump have been acquitted.”

Claudia had been active on other social media platforms, namely TikTok, since her August 2020 Twitter break, and a video she posted from the set of her Idol audition back in November had instantly made TMZ headlines, with many skeptics decrying what appeared to be Idol’s gimmick casting for ratings. Claudia preemptively responded to those doubters and haters via Twitter on Saturday, saying, “A lot of people think that my being on American Idol is a publicity stunt but I can promise you it is not. I have been vocally trained and in music for most of my life and did this on my own merit.” (Sunday’s Idol episode featured some home bedroom footage of Claudia singing at age 12, so she had the receipts.) “This was a really amazing opportunity and I took it! It’s starting the next chapter of my life: coming into my own and creating a name for MYSELF. I’m Claudia; I’m not someone’s daughter or that girl in family ‘drama.’ I’m just Claudia.”

The alarming and toxic Conway family drama, particularly between Claudia and Kellyanne, has played out in real time on Claudia’s social media over the past couple years, so when Claudia appeared on Idol Sunday, Katy immediately asked her, “Are you OK?” Claudia responded with a nervous chuckle, “No! But yes.” Katy even asked if Kellyanne still hugs Claudia, to which Claudia answered affirmatively, although she elaborated, “She loves me, I love her, but our relationship, I feel like it’s a little iffy.” Claudia went on to explain that being on Idol was a way for her to share her true voice and establish her own identity, a way to prove that she’s more than just “emancipation girl” or “that blond woman from Fox News’ daughter.”

“Most of my life, my feelings had been suppressed, so then I got social media and was like, ‘Well, yeah. Now my voice is being heard,’” a surprisingly poised Claudia explained to Katy and judges Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan. “When your mom is working for the president of the United States, who you very much disagree with, it’s hard. …The internet can be a very, very dark place. But when life is all going downhill, I have my music. Now, I want to get out of the controversy, get out of the drama, and let people know that I am a singer and this is what I want to do.” Meanwhile, Claudia’s attorney father George (a known “never Trump” Republican who endorsed Joe Biden for president) accompanied her in person and stood outside the audition room in tears, saying, “I couldn’t imagine anything that would make her happier than to do this.”

So, the obvious question on the judges’ and viewers’ minds was… can Claudia Conway actually sing? The short answer is yes. She has some raw talent. But she will need to work hard to graduate from TikTok star to pop star. Her first attempt, Rihanna’s “Love on the Brain,” showed potential, but her youth, inexperience, and nervousness also showed, resulting in an unfocused and inauthentic performance. Katy was clearly rooting for Claudia, however, so Katy stopped the audition, advised Claudia to take off her teetering heels, and try another song. Claudia went with Adele’s “When We Were Young,” a seemingly even more ambitious big ballad, but Katy coached her: “When you sing this song, think about when you were young. And there’s a sadness there. It’s like you lost your youth, because you weren’t able to experience it on your own without all of this noise.”

Claudia’s second performance was more heartfelt, so Katy then voted an enthusiastic yes. Luke voted no, saying Claudia wasn’t quite ready for prime time, and I saw his point; I doubt Katy would have been so hands-on, or that Claudia would have gotten so much screentime. if her parents weren’t “high-profile political figures.” But Lionel gave Claudia “giant props” for her ability to take direction. “I think what you’re doing right now is stepping forward and announcing who you are. You chose music. I’m going to give you a shot at music. It’s a yes from me,” said Lionel, thus casting the deciding vote and sending Claudia (and presumably chaperone George) not back to D.C., but through to Hollywood.’

Claudia gave the most viral — and probably most polarizing — audition Sunday, but definitely not the best audition. So, it will be a challenge for her to survive during a fiercely competitive Hollywood Week. Katy warned her, “There’s a lot of noise in your life. You have to calm the storm around you — meaning, before you sing, you need to get off your phone, you need to stop reading your comments. Push it aside. Because if not, you may not ever rise above your dad or your mom.” Katy later said, “This is wild. She’s coming in here with so much heat on her. But I think if she can keep that heat off, quiet all the noise, and remember the innocence and the love in her voice, I think there’s something there.”

Scroll down for Sunday’s other successful auditions, but first, a special shoutout to two soon-to-go-viral rejects who surely will accrue some new followers on TikTok: keytar-wielding Elton fanboy Ryan Romano, who failed to get a Golden Ticket but left the show with $400 in his Venmo account when he sold his snazzy sequined dinner jacket to Katy, and too-sexy Speedo model Mario Adrion, who bravely engaged in a “catwalk battle” with Katy soundtracked by Right Said Fred. (“It’s a no for Idol, but it’s a yes for life,” Katy told Mario.) Those guys are both winners in my book!

Benson Boone, 18: “Punchline”

Benson is also a TikTok star, with 1.2 million followers (that’s only 500,000 fewer than Claudia!), although up until recently, the self-described goofy dude seemed to be more internet-famous for his backflipping antics. He confessed that he only started singing a year ago, and even claimed to not know how to use a microphone when he sat down at the piano to croon Aidan Martin’s ballad. His indie-stylized enunciation was a bit affected and garbled, but he showcased “natural talent” and a “true gift,” as Lionel and Luke respectively noted. Katy actually told Benson, “I see you winning American Idol — if you want to.” But I’m not so sure of Benson’s chances; like Claudia, Benson will really need to put in the work. (Side note: I bet Benson and Claudia won’t be the only TikTok personalities we see try out for Idol this year.)

Alex Miller, 17: “I’m Over You So Get Over Me”

This small-town Kentucky cattle farmer and charmer lit up the audition room the moment he arrived, with Lionel exclaiming, “I hope you sing like you talk!” Alex’s perfect anti-Valentine’s Day original (which he wrote for his ex!), oddball humor, and old-school Opry/Live at Folsom vibes were instantly smile-inducing. “I love it, I love it, I love it! I am thrilled! Your personality is just infectious,” raved Lionel. Luke was so thrilled that he even hopped up from behind the desk (still staying six feet away, of course) for an impromptu duet on “Big City,” a Merle Haggard standard with which Alex was totally familiar. Alex was giving me old-soul Scotty McCreery vibes too. How is this kid only 17?

Jason Warrior, 25: “What’s Going On”

Regular singing show viewers will surely recognize Jason — if not from The Voice Season 11 (on which he made it all the way to the Live Playoffs), then from his infamous run on Fox’s short-lived The Four, when his obnoxious behavior (which frankly might’ve been egged on by producers) made him the token viral villain of that series. Jason didn’t speak about The Voice Sunday, as it is very rare for reality contestants to acknowledge their previous TV appearances. But surprisingly, he did do damage control by directly addressing that Four controversy (which had climaxed with him angrily confronting judge Meghan Trainor after his elimination and being escorted off the stage by security). Jason said, “I thought I knew it all. I thought I was a bag of chips, dip, and hot sauce. But I wasn’t even close to being there yet.” Jason even admitted that his “moment of immaturity” on The Four almost destroyed his career. (“Doors started to close… opportunities started to walk away.”) But when the newly humbled singer belted his Marvin Gaye protest song on Idol, he sounded genuinely lovely, better than he ever had before, and all was forgiven. “It took a lot of guts to crawl back into that saddle,” noted Lionel, who said this was “one of the smoothest vocals” he’d ever heard on Idol. “It sounds like you were on the wrong show,” Katy joked. I predict doors are going to reopen for Mr. Warrior this year.

Anilee List, 20: “Blue”

Anilee has Tourette syndrome, and she was inspired to start singing by Season 10 top four Idol rocker James Durbin, who was very open about his own Tourette’s experience when he competed on the show a decade ago. Anilee reminded me of a young Joss Stone or James’s Season 10 castmate Haley Reinhart, with her sunny style and unforced soulfulness somehow coupled with masterful vocal control. She simply exuded joy. Luke broke out in “six waves of chillbumps” and called this performance “just completely flawless,” while Katy even called it “one of the most technically perfect vocals I think we’ve even gotten to hear on American Idol.” In a full-circle Idol moment, Anilee exited the audition room with her Golden Ticket to see James’s beaming face on that immersive digital wall, as he congratulated her and told her, “Now is your chance to show the next generation what you’ve been diagnosed with is not something that defines you, but it’s something that you can defy.”

DJ Johnson, 18: “Scars”

DJ and her nine siblings were abandoned by their emotionally abusive mother last year, and it was devastating to see DJ pour all of her subsequent anguish and anger into her original piano ballad. As she broke down repeatedly, the supportive judges kept urging her to power through; Lionel clearly wanted to hug poor DJ, but due to COVID safety protocols, all he could do was offer her some tissues from a distance instead. It almost felt invasive and intrusive to air this audition on national TV, but I was getting flashbacks to original Idol Kelly Clarkson’s brave “Piece by Piece” performance during Fox’s farewell season — and I think viewers will similarly connect with DJ, if she can keep it together when it’s her time to perform on the big Idol stage. “The message in that song is a hit record. Your delivery was completely honest, to the point that you got us crying,” said Lionel. “Some of the greatest artists have become artists because they have had the most pain in their life. It’s about if you can take that pain and turn it into a purpose,” advised Katy.

Nia Renée 17: “Chain of Fools”

Another 17-year-old going on 70, this babydiva floored the judges with this fierce, fiery, and fun tour de force. Katy pretty much crowned Nia the new “queen of soul,” and Luke borrowed a favorite catchphrase from Lionel and described Nia’s audition as “barbecue sauce.” Luke also told Nia she was “born to do it” and even later raved, “She may be our best soul singer ever.” She is definitely finale material.

Grace Kinstler, 20: “Midnight Train to Georgia”/“Natural Woman”

And Sunday saved the best for last with this Clarkson-esque powerhouse, who dedicated a pair of soul classics to her recently deceased father and did Dad proud. Grace belted like she was trying to reach the back rows of the stadiums she was clearly born to headline, but true to her name, she made it all seem so effortless. “I think my milk just came in!” quipped new mom Katy (who was wearing a cow-print outfit at the time, natch). “This is the first time in four years that just someone singing made me cry,” marveled Luke, who said Grace was “right up there with some of the biggest voices in the history of Idol” like Kelly Clarkson and Jennifer Hudson. I agree: This master-class audition was one of the best in Idol history.
