Gaslit review: Julia Roberts enters her Meryl Streep era with wildly entertaining Watergate series

Creator Robbie Pickering was right when he said in an interview that Gaslit could have very easily been an overcorrection of history. At a time when television producers are tripping over themselves to present feminist readings of past events, Gaslit projects its progressiveness in a tongue-in-cheek manner that doesn’t dilute the sinister undertones of its fact-based story.

But perhaps what’s most surprising about the show (about the Watergate scandal, and based on a Slate podcast called Slow Burn) is that it doesn’t take the usual conspiracy thriller route, unlike the scores of older films and series about the biggest political misdemeanour in modern history. Against all expectations, Gaslit plays like a farce; a dark satire of our times that would make Armando Ianucci and Kundan Shah proud. “You were conducting criminal operation on behalf of the President and somebody gave you an office at the White House?” one character deadpans to another, eliciting the single biggest laugh of the show.

Despite being an ensemble piece, Gaslit has a particular affinity for the character Martha Mitchell. Played by Julia Roberts in a performance that will probably win her some very important awards next year, Mitchell is among the handful of second-tier characters who were involved in the scandal, but for some reason were relegated to the appendices of lore. Which is ironic, considering how desperately Mitchell wanted to be in the news.

A legendary gossip, the middle-aged southern belle was married to John Mitchell, the former Attorney General to President Richard Nixon. He’s played in the show by an unrecognisable Sean Penn, which, come to think of it, is exactly how I like my Sean Penn these days. Nixon said in his famous interview with David Frost, a few years after resigning from the presidency, that were it not for Martha Mitchell, Watergate wouldn’t have happened. What he probably meant was that were it not for her, he wouldn’t have been caught.

She was, after all, among the first public figures to call for Nixon’s resignation, but was summarily gagged by a gang of powerful men around her, who accused her of being a blabbermouth (which she was) and mentally unstable (debatable). Towards the end of her life—penniless and alone, dismantled by the same press that built her—she began questioning her reality, which, I suppose, is where the show gets its title. Roberts’ performance highlights Martha’s individualism, and her dignity, even when she is aware that she is losing both.

It’s always interesting to observe what perspective a historical drama takes. The trick is to not come across as smug. And that is perhaps what sets Gaslit apart from, say, the works of Adam McKay. Consider the series finale, a terrific episode titled The Year of the Rat. It’s a masterclass in balancing tone, moving so seamlessly from domestic drama to tragic romance to absurdist comedy, and relying on metaphor and symbolism instead of boring things like facts. Everyone is operating at their best in this episode; not only Roberts and Penn, who get a terrific confrontation scene as their relationship crumbles under pressure, but also the show’s standout performer, Shea Whigham.

It would seem as if Whigham, a character actor known for playing intense oddballs, has spent his career building towards this role. In Gaslit, he plays Gordon Liddy, a radical-minded FBI agent who was in charge of the team of thieves that broke into Watergate complex. Liddy, in many ways, represents the maniacal alt-right that has overtaken not just American politics, but also our own. He displays a blind, almost irrational faith in his leader; someone who has appointed himself as their servant/soldier without realising that he’s actually a patsy. The show often mocks Liddy, as it should, but it doesn’t whitewash the fearless, militant, and very, very scary side to his personality. For the show to boldly dedicate a large chunk of that terrific finale to making him squirm before a tiny enemy, his false bravado systematically dismantled before his eyes, is particularly satisfying.

Liddy was among the many freeloaders and opportunists to attached themselves to Nixon’s cause, hoping that it would help them. But like virtually every single one of them who was even tangentially connected to Watergate, he became the fall guy. There’s a poignant lesson in there about sycophancy, and how irrelevant it is in the long run. When the tides turn, the show warns, nobody will be safe. Just look at John Dean, a senior White House advisor who was among the first to flip against Nixon. Even he got a prison sentence. The wonderful Dan Stevens plays him like a used car salesman in the show.

Most of members of the Republican Party that we see in the show—all of them men, by the way—are presented as bumbling fools. Which tells you exactly what Pickering and series director Matt Ross think about state of affairs right now. There is, however, a (very slight) sense that the show has missed the boat. Gaslit, the podcast, was a real-time response to the Trump presidency; the show is essentially shutting the stable door. And while revisiting the darkest timeline might seem a little jarring to American audiences, we in India can easily imprint our own realities on the series.

What are we allegedly (but almost certainly) in for this time, then? According to Dealabls, the trio of PS Plus games for May are:

So, it appears May includes the latest football game from EA Sports and a pair of decent indie titles. We have a feeling there will be some push back against this selection, but it’s an overall solid trio.

As always, things like this shouldn’t be 100 per cent trusted, but given Dealabs’ recent history, we can pretty safely assume this is legit. We’ll find out tomorrow, at any rate, but again, the site has consistently leaked the real lineup multiple times.

Anyway, if this is the real deal, what do you make of these games for your May PS Plus lineup? Do a goal in the comments section below.

Melissa Lucio’s execution delayed by Texas appeals court

HOUSTON (AP) — A Texas appeals court on Monday delayed the execution of Melissa Lucio amid growing doubts about whether she fatally beat her 2-year-old daughter in a case that has garnered the support of lawmakers, celebrities and even some jurors who sentenced her to death.

The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals granted a request by Lucio’s lawyers for a stay of execution so a lower court can review her claims that new evidence would exonerate her.

Lucio had been set for lethal injection Wednesday for the 2007 death of her daughter Mariah in Harlingen, a city of about 75,000 in Texas’ southern tip.

Prosecutors have maintained that the girl was the victim of abuse and noted that her body was covered in bruises. Lucio’s lawyers say Mariah died from injuries she sustained in a fall down a steep staircase several days before she died.

“I am grateful the court has given me the chance to live and prove my innocence,” Lucio said in a statement provided by her lawyers. “Mariah is in my heart today and always. I am grateful to have more days to be a mother to my children and a grandmother to my grandchildren. I will use my time to help bring them to Christ. I am deeply grateful to everyone who prayed for me and spoke out on my behalf.”

Lucio’s mother, Esperanza Treviño, tearfully thanked all of her daughter’s supporters, saying, “Thank God for the miracle.”

Lucio was first told her execution had been delayed in a phone call with state Rep. Jeff Leach, a Republican who has helped lead a bipartisan effort to halt her execution, said Vanessa Potkin, one of Lucio’s attorneys who is with the Innocence Project.

“She sobbed. She was just overwhelmed,” said Potkin.

In a statement, Leach said he was grateful the appeals court had “pushed the pause button on her execution, saving the state of Texas from the irreversible blunder of potentially killing an innocent citizen.”

The execution stay was announced minutes before the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles had been set to consider Lucio’s clemency application to either commute her death sentence or grant her a 120-day reprieve. The paroles board did not review her clemency petition because of the execution stay. If the case were to come back before the board in the future, Lucio’s lawyers would have to file a new petition.

Lucio’s attorneys say her capital murder conviction was based on an unreliable and coerced confession that was the result of relentless questioning and her long history of being sexually, physically and emotionally abused. They say Lucio wasn’t allowed to present evidence questioning the validity of her confession.

Her lawyers also contend that unscientific and false evidence misled jurors into believing Mariah’s injuries could have been caused only by abuse and not by medical complications from a severe fall.

“It would have shocked the public’s conscience for Melissa to be put to death based on false and incomplete medical evidence for a crime that never even happened,” said Potkin. “All of the new evidence of her innocence has never before been considered by any court. The court’s stay allows us to continue fighting alongside Melissa to overturn her wrongful conviction.”

Cameron County District Attorney Luis Saenz, whose office prosecuted the case, said in a statement he expected the execution to be delayed because various legal issues remain unresolved.

“I welcome the opportunity to prosecute this case in the courtroom: where witnesses testify under oath, where witnesses may be cross-examined, where evidence is governed by the rules of evidence and criminal procedure … That is our criminal jurisprudence system, and it is working,” said Saenz, who was not in office when Lucio was tried in 2008.

During a sometimes contentious Texas House committee hearing on Lucio’s case this month, Saenz had said he disagreed with Lucio’s lawyers’ claims that new evidence would exonerate her. Prosecutors say Lucio had a history of drug abuse and at times had lost custody of some of her 14 children.

In its three-page order, the appeals court asked that the trial court in Brownsville that handled Lucio’s case review four claims her lawyers have made: whether prosecutors used false evidence to convict her; whether previously unavailable scientific evidence would have prevented her conviction; whether she is actually innocent; and whether prosecutors suppressed evidence that would have been favorable to her defense.

It was not immediately known when the lower court would begin reviewing her case. Tivon Schardl, one of Lucio’s lawyers, said they hope to convince the trial judge to recommend a new trial. If such a recommendation is made, that would then be sent to the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, which would make the final decision on a new trial.

More than half the members of the Texas Legislature had asked that her execution be halted. A bipartisan group of state lawmakers traveled this month to Gatesville, where the state houses female death row inmates, and prayed with Lucio.

One of those lawmakers, El Paso Democratic state Rep. Joe Moody, tweeted that he was relieved for Lucio. “A stay confirms what we’ve said all along: Melissa Lucio shouldn’t be on death row,” he wrote.

Five of the 12 jurors who sentenced Lucio and one alternate juror have questioned their decision and asked that she get a new trial.

Lucio’s cause also has the backing of faith leaders and celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, and it was featured on HBO’s “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.”

New PS5 update is rolling out this week – and it’s a game-changer

A new PS5 update is rolling out this week that will bring variable refresh rate (VRR, for short) to Sony’s console – a feature that will improve the performance of various PS5 games.

The news comes as a surprise as Sony previously stated that VRR support would arrive in the “months ahead”. However, it appears that the company has managed to expedite the process, revealing on the PlayStation Blog that VRR support is coming to every PS5 this week.

VRR is a long-awaited feature that’s topped the wish lists of PS5 owners who have compatible displays, especially as both the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S have long embraced the display technology.

As outlined by Sony, VRR requires a compatible TV and PC monitor with HDMI 2.1. VRR is a common feature on the best TVs and it primarily helps eliminate screen tearing, which occurs when your TV’s image refresh rate isn’t in sync with whatever game you’re playing. With the PS5 VRR update, your TV’s display will get synced to the console output to stop any screen tearing without impacting a game’s performance.

This isn’t all VRR can do, though: it also helps combat other common display problems, especially in games with stuttering or frame rate drops. It can also help lower input latency, making games feel more responsive.

Some PS5 games will receive specific optimization patches for VRR. Thankfully, Sony has already announced a pretty sizable selection:

Insomniac Games has also announced that VRR support is coming this week to a number of its games, which means Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, Marvel’s Spider-Man, and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales will be some of the first to get patches.

According to Insomniac, those who use VRR on a 120Hz display will get a variable, uncapped frame rate that can exceed your chosen graphic mode’s 30 or 60fps target by 50% or more (depending on gameplay).

Arkane Studio, developers of Deathloop, has also announced that VRR support is coming to the time-looping shooter, which should provide smoother performance and tackle any screen tearing.

Of course, not every game will receive a VRR-specific patch, but that doesn’t mean they can’t take advantage of the technology. Users will be able to apply VRR to “unsupported games” at a system level, which should – in theory – benefit every title. However, if unexpected visual effects occur, you can always switch this off.

It’s worth noting that games that have a frame rate below 40fps tend not to benefit from VRR. 30fps titles, for example, will fall below the usual VRR window, where the technology kicks in to help smooth out gameplay. That means a game like Bloodborne, which has a notoriously stuttery 30fps frame rate, won’t benefit.

However, something like Ghostwire Tokyo, which has multiple high frame rate modes, the majority of which are either unstable or exhibit screen tearing, will benefit immensely from VRR.

A fantastic feature, but one more remains

We’re delighted that PS5 is finally getting VRR support, particularly as we thought we’d have to wait a good few months before it arrived. However, there’s still one big feature missing from the PS5, and that’s 1440p support.

When connected to a 1440p display, the PS5 will only output at 1080p, albeit with downscaling. While this helps provide a crisp 1080p image, users who own a 1440p display and have a PS5 hooked up are missing out on 78% of the pixels by being locked to 1080p.

This is a huge oversight, then, particularly as many PS5 owners might use a 1440p monitor. Hopefully, this issue is addressed sooner or later, as it’s a feature that’s been available on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S for a number of years.

If you want to know more about variable refresh rate, check out our ‘What is VRR?’ guide, which breaks down all the things you need to know about the display technology.

Use the ‘talk test’ to make workouts more or less intense

The talk test is a way to measure relative intensity of an activity, and it relies on understanding how physical activity affects heart rate and breathing, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Generally, being able to talk but not sing during an activity would make it moderate intensity, the CDC says. Your voice might be labored, said physical therapist Nicholas Rolnick, but you can carry on a conversation. “It’s (your) heart rate elevated, but not interfering with a workout,” said Rolnick, who’s based in New York City.

It’s an easy method of scaling intensity without any complicated fitness technology or software, Rolnick said. The talk test can help you “make sure that you’re hitting the intensity of exercise that you want to hit in order to meet physical activity-recommended guidelines.”

This activity could look like walking briskly, or 3 miles per hour or faster, but not speed-walking. Water aerobics, biking slower than 10 miles per hour on flat or level ground, tennis and ballroom dancing might also fit into this intensity level, according to the CDC.

During the most intense workout, carrying on a conversation would be impossible, Rolnick said. You wouldn’t be able to say more than a few words without having to pause for a breath, the CDC says.

Exercises done to that intensity can include running, swimming laps, singles tennis, aerobic dancing, bicycling faster than 10 miles per hour or on inclines, jumping rope or hiking uphill or while carrying a heavy load.

The World Health Organization has recommended that adults get at least 150 minutes — 2 1/2 hours — of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity weekly. That can reduce the risk for early death, heart disease, hypertension, cancer and Type 2 diabetes, according to WHO.

Pregnant people should do at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic and strengthening exercises per week, the WHO recommendations say. And children under 18 need at least 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous exercise (mostly aerobic activities) daily.

Trump live: Ex-president tells Piers Morgan he ‘threatened’ Putin, as court rules against him

‘I’m a more honest man than you’: Trump storms out of Piers Morgan interview

Donald Trump has been found in contempt of proceedings brought against him by New York Attorney General Letitia James, who is investigating allegations of fraud in the Trump Organization’s real estate dealings.

The ex-president and his associates have so far refused to comply with Ms James’s demands for documents, leading a judge to impose a $10,000 daily fine until the records are turned over.

Meanwhile, Mr Trump’s much-trailed interview with Piers Morgan has aired its first segment with the ex-president insisting he deterred an invasion of Ukraine during his administration by threatening Vladimir Putin “like he’s never been threatened before”.

In advance of their conversation’s screening, Mr Morgan described Mr Trump as “pathological” in his fixation on the supposed theft of the 2020 election, a conspiracy theory for which the journalist insisted there is no evidence.

In the interview, Mr Trump takes aim at Meghan Markle and alleges that she is leading Harry “by the nose” while asserting that the Queen should strip the couple of all royal titles.

Can Trump run again in the 2024 election?

Former president Donald Trump has not stopped fundraising since moving from Washington DC to his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, amassing a war chest of well over $100m.

He has been back out on the road this year ahead of the midterm elections, holding MAGA rallies in state after state with candidates he’s endorsed, insisting to crowds that he did not legitimately lose to Mr Biden and repeatedly hinting that he plans on avenging his defeat by running again.

Today, Mr Trump’s hold on the Republican party is overwhelming, and none of this year’s major candidates have broken from the former reality TV host.

Elon Musk is the ‘singular solution’ for Twitter

Jack Dorsey, CEO of Twitter and co-founder & CEO of Square, speaks during the crypto-currency conference Bitcoin 2021 Convention at the Mana Convention Center in Miami, Florida, on June 4, 2021.

Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey approves of Elon Musk’s deal to buy the social media site for $44 billion.

Reacting to news of the takeover agreement on Twitter, Dorsey posted a Spotify link to the Radiohead song “Everything In Its Right Place,” and said Musk is the “singular solution I trust” to run the company he co-created in 2006.

“I trust his mission to extend the light of consciousness,” he said.

On Monday, Twitter management accepted Musk’s offer to acquire the company and take it private at $54.20 a share.

The deal has attracted both scrutiny and praise from a myriad of voices ranging from senior political figures to Twitter’s own user base.

While Musk and his supporters see the takeover as a return to free expression on the internet, critics are concerned it will give the world’s richest man too much influence over online discourse.

Dorsey stepped down as Twitter’s CEO last year and has since shifted his focus to solely managing his payments company Block, formerly known as Square.

The Silicon Valley entrepreneur said his “biggest regret” was how Twitter operated as a company.

“It has been owned by Wall Street and the ad model,” Dorsey said. “Taking it back from Wall Street is the correct first step.”

“In principle, I don’t believe anyone should own or run Twitter,” he added. “It wants to be a public good at a protocol level, not a company.”

As far as the company goes, however, Dorsey says he’s in favor of Musk running things.

“Elon’s goal of creating a platform that is ‘maximally trusted and broadly inclusive’ is the right one,” he said, thanking Musk and Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal for “getting the company out of an impossible situation.”

“This is the right path… I believe it with all my heart,” Dorsey added.

Dorsey, a vocal supporter of bitcoin, has previously envisioned the creation of decentralized social media protocols to address the problem of a handful of powerful tech companies controlling the most popular online services. An initiative called Bluesky was set up in 2019 with funding from Twitter to develop the standards to bring this vision to life.

On Monday, Bluesky issued a series of tweets clarifying its relationship with Twitter in light of Musk’s deal to acquire the company.

Though backed by Twitter, Bluesky is an “independent company” and its funding from the tech giant is “not subject to any conditions except one: that Bluesky is to research and develop technologies that enable open and decentralized public conversation,” the project said.

Treasury yields dip as economic slowdown fears mount

U.S. Treasury yields dipped on Tuesday morning, with investor focus remaining on the Covid-19 outbreak in China and concerns over a global economic slowdown.

The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note fell under a basis point to 2.8335% at 3:45 a.m. ET. The yield on the 30-year Treasury bond moved less than basis point lower to 2.9048%. Yields move inversely to prices and 1 basis point is equal to 0.01%.

Treasury yields slumped on Monday, along with a sell-off in stock markets. This came on the back of concerns that a Covid-19 breakout in Beijing, China, could see a lockdown and slow economic growth in the region.

Beijing announced late Monday that it would be expanding mass testing for the virus.

The potential drag on economic growth from higher inflation and rising interest rates also remains a concern for investors.

David Pierce, managing director at GPS Capital Markets, told CNBC’s “Squawk Box Europe” on Tuesday that he believed the Federal Reserve would hike interest rates by 50 basis points at both of the next two policy meetings.

However, Pierce said these hikes could “really precipitate a turnaround in the economy and slow things down so much so that they might have to back those off very quickly — it is a really volatile situation right now.”
