Shooting reported near University of Virginia in Charlottesville

Comment

A shooting was reported late Sunday at a parking garage on the main campus at the University of Virginia. Authorities gave no immediate word of injuries or fatalities

The gunfire was reported at the garage on Culbreth Road about 10:30 p.m., the University of Virginia Office of Emergency Management said.

University Police said in a tweet that they were looking for Christopher Darnell Jones “regarding the shooting incident.” Jones is 23 and may be a former football player, according to a 2018 roster.

Police said the suspect is a Black man wearing a burgundy jacket or hoodie, with blue jeans and red shoes, was at large and considered armed and dangerous.

Jones, according to a U-Va. sports website, was a freshman on the football team in 2018 but did not appear in any games. He had previously played linebacker and running back at Petersburg High School in Virginia. It was not immediately known whether he is still a U-Va. student.

A university spokesman, reached by telephone, was unable immediately to provide any details on the number of people who might have been shot or their condition.

Just before midnight, the emergency management office urged students to continue sheltering in place and to “reach out to friends & family and advise of your status.”

In a message that followed around 1:15 a.m., Vice President and Dean of Students Robyn S. Hadley exhorted the community, “Please, please take the shelter in place commands seriously as the situation remains active.”

The wider U-Va. community was on edge overnight.

“UVA parents are glued to our social media right now. … Parents are all on edge,” said Danielle Werchowsky, of Arlington, whose son is a student there. She said she urged him in a phone call to turn off the lights in his apartment and stay away from windows.

Culbreth Road and the garage, where shots were heard, are about half a mile north of the lawn and the Rotunda and near other campus buildings.

Family and friends with questions were urged to call a U-Va. Emergency Hotline at 877-685-4836.

This is a developing story and will be updated.

Jeff Saturday brings passion back to Matt Ryan, Colts in debut as interim coach

This is where I need to come clean. Saturday is a friend of mine. I covered him from afar as a player, then worked with him at ESPN. We have golfed together, broken bread together, and talked as much about family and life as we have about football. I have long considered him an advocate in the fight for equality and meritocracy, but I do not anymore. Not in this case.

That does not mean I don’t root for his success, because I do. He’s one of the finest men I know. But he had a chance to walk the talk and did not, in this case.

Coaches always talk about making personal sacrifices for the greater good. Perhaps that means fewer touches or sharing reps. Do what is necessary for the team to succeed. Saturday could have made a real statement about the importance of equality and meritocracy by turning down Irsay’s offer.

Before you call me naïve, among other things, it has been done. Two years ago the Texans had a strong interest in hiring former quarterback Josh McCown as head coach. Like Saturday, he had no coaching experience beyond high school, but he was extremely close to the decision-makers. Instead of pursuing the opportunity, McCown told them they should consider others who had put in time for such a shot, even citing a minority coach he had worked with.

“My wife and I were praying about this, and I wanted a player to get a chance,” Saturday told me on Sunday. “I’ve seen the Boones of the world go straight from TV to being the manager of the Yankees. I’ve seen basketball guys go straight to the head coaching job and get opportunities. I have not seen that in the NFL, and I told my wife, ‘This does not just come around. It’s not something that’s just arbitrary.’ And I felt very passionate and convicted that, if I step up and I do a good job, and people can see the way that former players can lead a group of men …

“I don’t pretend to be the smartest coach on the staff; I pale in comparison, and I mix [sic] no words. But I do know how to lead men, whether that’s coaches, players or an organization. And I know a bunch of men who are just like me that I’ve lived with, I’ve broken bread with, I’ve played with and against. And I want us to have a chance. I want players to have a chance. I had no idea if (Irsay) was going to go with me, but I just told my wife that I felt the Lord leading me here. The other side for me personally is, I care about this organization. This isn’t just a job; this is the organization I lived in and my adult life was forged in. My wife and I have all our kids here. I told them the first day, it’s not just about players, it’s not just about coaches — although I love them and their families, and I understand the seat that they’re sitting in — but, bro, the equipment room, the media relations, the training room, I love them and care about them. I know I can help them and help this organization turn around and get the direct [sic] they need. Maybe I break through and different owners turn around and say, ‘Hey, maybe we give guys chances, and maybe it starts with people who have played for the organization.’ “

In theory that sounds good, but diverse candidates typically don’t have the type of personal relationships with NFL owners that Saturday has with Irsay. That said, I will continue to want nothing but success for Saturday, because he is a good man. And he is someone who can lead (yes, I know a lot more goes into being a successful head coach; but the first step is getting others to follow).

Listen to running back Jonathan Taylor, who ran for 147 yards and a score on 22 carries, when asked what Saturday brought to the team.

“He gave us passion,” he said. “Anytime he speaks to us, anytime he’s on the field, you can just feel the passion that he has, given the history that he has with this organization. It’s not about him getting a bunch of wins. It’s not about him being at the forefront. He just wants to see the men and women of the Indianapolis Colts succeed, the whole organization, whether it’s the kitchen staff giving us the correct food, or whether it’s the equipment staff making sure we’re ready to go.”

Russian ‘war crimes’ reported in Kherson – DW – 11/13/2022

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in his regular nightly address on Sunday that investigators working in the southern Kherson region have uncovered more than 400 “war crimes” committed by Russian troops.

Moscow had announced withdrawal from Kherson city. The retreat represents a major setback for Russia as it was the only regional capital it had captured since the beginning of its invasion of Ukraine in February.

While there are still Russian forces in the Kherson region, Ukraine’s army has reported retaking several towns, as well as the capital, Kherson city.

“In the Kherson region, the Russian army left behind the same atrocities as in other regions of our country, where it was able to enter,” Zelenskyy said, adding that the bodies of Ukrainian civilians and troops were found in Kherson.

“We will find and bring to justice every murderer. Without a doubt,” he added.

Several Western leaders have accused Russia of committing war crimes after seeing the destruction in regions following Moscow’s forces retreat. Ukrainian officials have also reported finding mass graves in those areas.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) is currently probing potential war crimes conducted by Russian forces in Ukraine.

Here are the other main headlines from the war in Ukraine on Sunday, November 13

Ending war ‘best thing we can do for global economy’ — US Treasury

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said ahead of a G20 meeting in Indonesia that ending the war in Ukraine is the “best thing” that can be done for the global economy.

“Ending Russia’s war is a moral imperative and the single best thing we can do for the global economy,” Yellen said.

Rising fuel and food prices, in part caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, are one of the main topics of discussion at the G20 summit.

Scholz regrets Putin’s G20 snub

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said it was a shame that Russian President Vladimir Putin is not attending next week’s G20 summit in Indonesia.

Speaking in Hanoi, Vietnam, Scholz said Putin would have to face fierce criticism of the war he launched in Ukraine.

“He would have had to expose himself to all the questions and all the criticism that has been formulated by many countries in the world. That’s probably why he’s not here.”

Scholz and other leaders of the G20 group of advanced economies are due to meet on the Indonesian island of Bali on Tuesday for a two-day summit.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is to hold a video address for them.

Putin canceled his participation a few days ago and will now be represented by his foreign minister Sergei Lavrov.

De-mining underway in Kherson

Authorities in the city of Kherson were working Sunday to restore critical infrastructure after Moscow announced its troops had withdrawn from the strategic city.

Yaroslav Yanushevych, the governor of the Kherson region, was quoted by media as saying Russian troops had “mined all critical infrastructure objects.”

Zelenskyy said on Sunday that one was killed and four were injured during de-mining work. The president asked residents to “be very careful and immediately inform the rescuers about all dangerous objects.”

Train services to Kherson were expected to resume this week, according to the head of the Ukrainian state railways, but another regional official, Yuriy Sobolevskyy, told Ukrainian TV that the humanitarian situation “remains very difficult.”

“Most houses have no electricity, no water and problems with gas supplies,” Sobolevskyy said.

Russia claims advance in Donetsk, Ukraine reports strikes on multiple regions

Russia’s Defense Ministry said its soldiers captured the village of Majorsk in the eastern Ukrainian region of Donetsk.

There was no immediate comment from Ukraine, but the Ukrainian army reported earlier that fierce fighting was ongoing in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

Russian rocket and artillery fire hit the eastern areas of Bakhmut, Avdiivka, Novopavlivka and Zaporizhzhia, according to Ukraine’s general staff.

Ukrainian officials say Russian troops stole raccoon and other animals

The founder of an animal rights movement in Ukraine said Russian forces had stolen animals from a local zoo in Kherson.

“They have taken most of the zoo’s collection to Crimea: from llamas and wolves to donkeys and squirrels,” Oleksandr Todorchuk, founder of UAnimals said on Facebook.

According to local media, a Moscow-backed official in Crimea had ordered the “evacuation” of animals.

A raccoon, allegedly among the “stolen” animals, especially attracted attention on social media, with Ukrainians posting memes calling for its release like, “Save Private Raccoon,” in reference to the multi-award-winning war film Saving Private Ryan.

Ukrainian railways offer symbolic tickets to occupied cities

After Kherson’s liberation, Ukrainian railways are offering symbolic tickets to cities that are still under Russian control.

The tickets, which cost around 1,000 hryvnias ($27.40), can be used after the cities are liberated.

“Today you can order tickets for the first three trains from Kyiv to five cities: already de-occupied Kherson, as well as Mariupol, Donetsk, Luhansk and Simferopol,” the railway operator said on telegram messaging apps.

“The ticket can be purchased, kept as a symbol of faith in the Armed Forces and the liberation of Ukraine from the occupiers,” it said. “As soon as traffic is restored, railway officials will send a message with the date and location.”

Sledgehammer execution of ex-Russian mercenary uploaded to social media

A video purportedly showing the execution of a former Russian mercenary who switched sides is circulating on Russian social media in what pro-Russian bloggers said was revenge for his alleged treachery.

The unverified video shows the man identifying himself as 55-year-old Yevgeny Nuzhin. He is claiming to be now supporting Ukraine in the war.

He said he was abducted in Kyiv on October 11 and was brought to a basement.

“I got hit over the head and lost consciousness and came around in this cellar,” he said. “They told me I was to be tried.”

The footage shows Nuzhin’s head taped to a brick wall and as he speaks, an unidentified man loitering in combat clothing behind smashes a sledgehammer into the side of his head and neck.

Nuzhin collapsed onto the floor and the unidentified man delivered another blow to his head.

It was also unclear how Nuzhin, who told Ukrainian media in September that he wanted to fight for Ukraine, ended up in the hands of what appear to be Russian forces.

Cristiano Ronaldo says he ‘feels betrayed’ by Manchester United

Cristiano Ronaldo has said he “feels betrayed” by Manchester United.

In an interview with Piers Morgan in The Sun, the 37-year-old forward said he feels he is being forced out of Manchester United, “Not only by the coach (Erik ten Hag), but also by two or three other people around the club”.

He said: “I feel betrayed.

“Some people, I feel, don’t want me here. Not just this year, but last year too.”

Ronaldo also touched on his relationship with Ten Hag, adding: “I don’t have respect for him because he doesn’t show respect for me.

“If you don’t have respect for me, I’m never gonna have respect for you.”

He also spoke on Ralf Ragnick’s time at the club, who was appointed interim manager after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s departure last season.

The Austrian has had significant success as a director of football but had not managed a team for 10 years before taking over at United in November last year, with Ronaldo commenting: “If you’re not even a coach, how are you going to be the boss of Manchester United? I’d never even heard of him.”

Ronaldo told United he wanted to leave this summer, should the club receive a suitable bid, but no satisfactory firm offers were made for the forward.

He previously drew criticism from his manager back in August when he left early during a friendly against Rayo Vallecano. He was substituted at half-time during the warm-up fixture and was then filmed outside the ground before the end of the match.

Last month, he refused to come on as a substitute during the closing stages of his side’s win against Tottenham Hotspur. He was then left out of the squad for United’s fixture against Chelsea the following weekend and trained by himself for a week before returning to the lineup for their 3-0 Europa League win against Sheriff.
The Portugal international also missed his side’s final Premier League match before the World Cup break, a 2-1 victory over Fulham on Sunday, due to illness.

Ronaldo has struggled for form in front of goal this season. Before tonight, in 16 appearances in all competitions, the Portugal international had only managed three goals and two assists.

He has, however, played a more prominent role in the Old Trafford club’s Europa League campaign. The 37-year-old had started all six of United’s matches in the competition, scoring two goals and claiming two assists.

Elon Musk says ‘I have too much work on my plate’

NUSA DUA, Indonesia, Nov 14 (Reuters) – Billionaire Elon Musk said on Monday he was working “at the absolute most amount…from morning til night, seven days a week” when asked about his recent acquisition of Twitter and his leadership of automaker Tesla Inc (TSLA.O).

“I have too much work on my plate that is for sure,” Musk said by videolink to a business conference on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Bali.

Musk is chief executive of both companies and also runs rocket firm SpaceX, brain-chip startup Neuralink and tunneling firm the Boring Company. Wearing a batik shirt sent by the organizers, he appeared on screen lit by candles, explaining that he was speaking from a place that had just lost power.

Tesla investors worry that Musk, a self-confessed “nanomanager” who has been personally involved in working-level decisions from car styling to supply chain issues, is distracted at a critical time for the world’s largest electric vehicle maker.

Tesla’s shares have halved in value since early April, when he disclosed he had taken a stake in Twitter. His Tesla share sales, including another $4 billion last week to bring his Twitter-related sales to $20 billion, have added to the pressure.

When asked about the complexity of industrial supply chains “decoupling” from China and the risks from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Musk returned to how busy he was.

Responding to an observation that many business leaders in Asia wanted to be the “Elon Musk of the East,” Musk said: “I’d be careful what you wish for. I’m not sure how many people would actually like to be me. They would like to be what they imagine being me, which is not the same thing as actually being me. The amount that I torture myself is next level, frankly.”

Musk also said he wanted to see Twitter support more video and longer-form video so that content creators could make a living on the platform, but did not provide details. His remarks were streamed live on Alphabet Inc’s (GOOGL.O) YouTube.

Indonesia has been trying to secure a deal with Tesla on battery investment and potentially one for SpaceX to develop a rocket launch site.

Musk made no commitment to either of those but said Indonesia had a large role to play in the electric vehicle supply chain and that it would make sense “long term” for SpaceX to have multiple launch points around the globe.

It was not clear where Musk was during the Bali event. His personal jet has remained in Austin, Texas, Tesla’s headquarters since the weekend, according to @ElonJet, a Twitter account that tracks Musk’s Gulfstream G650.

“I’m just looking at this video and it’s so bizarre,” Musk said. “I’m sitting here in the dark surrounded by candles.”

Musk added he believed that the economy would make the transition to sustainable energy, adding it was “just a question of how long it takes.” He said space exploration should remain a priority “so we can understand the nature of the universe and our place in it.”

“Maybe we’ll find alien civilization or discover civilizations that existed millions of years ago, but we see the ruins of ancient civilizations. I think that would be incredibly interesting,” he said.

Biden and Xi to meet ahead of G20

NUSA DUA, Indonesia, Nov 14 (Reuters) – Chinese leader Xi Jinping will arrive on the Indonesian island of Bali on Monday for a long-awaited meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden, ahead of a Group of 20 (G20) summit set to be fraught with tension over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The two leaders are expected to discuss Taiwan, Ukraine and North Korea’s nuclear ambitions, issues that will also loom over the G20 that opens on Tuesday without Russian President Vladimir Putin in attendance.

Billionaire Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) and Twitter Inc, addressed a business forum that is part of the summit and said he had “too much work” on his plate.

Speaking by videolink, he appeared lit by candles, wearing a batik shirt sent by the organisers. He said he was speaking from a place that had just lost power.

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will represent the Russian president at the G20 summit – the first since Russia invaded Ukraine in February – after the Kremlin said Putin was too busy to attend.

On the eve of Monday’s meeting with Xi, Biden told Asian leaders in Cambodia that U.S. communication lines with China would stay open to prevent conflict, with tough talks almost certain in the days ahead.

The United States would “compete vigorously” with China while “ensuring competition does not veer into conflict”, said Biden, stressing the importance of peace in the Taiwan Strait during an address to the East Asia Summit in Cambodia. He arrived in Bali on Sunday night.

Relations between the superpowers have sunk to their lowest in decades, marred by growing tensions in recent years over a host of issues ranging from Hong Kong and Taiwan to the South China Sea, trade practices and U.S. restrictions on Chinese technology.

But U.S. officials said there have been quiet efforts by both Beijing and Washington over the past two months to repair ties.

“These meetings do not take place in isolation, they are part of a very sustained process,” said one Biden administration official. “We have engaged in serious, sustained – dozens and dozens of hours – of quiet diplomacy behind the scenes.

“I think we are satisfied with the seriousness that both sides have brought to that process.”

Biden and Xi, who have held five phone or video calls since Biden became president in January 2021, last met in person during the Obama administration when Biden was vice president.

Monday’s face-to-face meeting will be at The Mulia, a luxury beachside hotel on Nusa Dua bay in Bali. It is unlikely to produce a joint statement, the White House has said, but it could help stabilise the bilateral relationship.

Both leaders will attend the opening of the G20 summit on Tuesday.

‘SOME DISCOMFORT’

One of the main topics at the G20 will be Russia’s war in Ukraine and Biden will be “unapologetic” in his defence of the European nation, U.S. officials said last week.

Xi and Putin have grown increasingly close in recent years, bound by their shared distrust of the West, and reaffirmed their partnership just days before Russia invaded Ukraine. But China has been careful not to provide any direct material support that could trigger Western sanctions against it.

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang emphasised the “irresponsibility” of nuclear threats during the summit in Cambodia, suggesting China was uncomfortable with strategic partner Russia’s nuclear rhetoric, the Biden administration official said.

The West has accused Russia of making irresponsible statements on the possible use of nuclear weapons since its February invasion of Ukraine. Russia has in turn accused the West of “provocative” nuclear rhetoric.

“There have been areas where China and Russia have worked together to deepen and broaden their relationship economically,” said the U.S. official. “But on some of these big issues, I think there is undeniably some discomfort in Beijing about what we’ve seen in terms of reckless rhetoric and activity on the part of Russia.”

Russia’s Lavrov said on Sunday the West was “militarising” Southeast Asia in a bid to contain Russian and Chinese interests, setting the stage for more confrontation with Western leaders at the G20.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has said he will address the G20 gathering by videolink on Tuesday.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is expected to meet Lavrov at the summit, a Downing Street spokesperson said in a statement. He is also likely to hold a bilateral meeting with Biden.

The G20 bloc, which includes a broad array of countries ranging from Brazil to India and Germany, accounts for more than 80% of the world’s gross domestic product (GDP) and 60% of its population.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is due to join Indonesian President Joko Widodo to address the parallel B20 business forum taking place on Monday ahead of the G20 summit.

The White Lotus’s Meghann Fahey Knows Daphne Is No Victim

Sure, Meghann Fahy’s White Lotus character, Daphne, comes across as an Instagram-perfect mommy who doesn’t remember whether she votes, but there’s more to her than meets the eye. She reveals as much on this week’s episode of the HBO series, “Bull Elephants,” when she decides to whisk Aubrey Plaza’s Harper off on an impromptu trip from their hotel in Taormina, Sicily, to nearby Noto seemingly just to play mind games with her husband, Cameron (Theo James). Once Daphne gets there, she decides to offer Harper an edible and proffer her thoughts on the obvious fact that her husband cheats on her a lot. She’s not the victim in their relationship, she insists, and she knows the deal she’s bought into.

At Vulture Festival in Los Angeles this weekend, Fahy discussed this new side of Daphne after a screening of the episode, and revealed a bit of creator Mike White’s intentions with Cameron and Daphne’s mind games. She also discussed the experience of filming on location in Sicily, learning to make a moderately okay eggplant Parmesan, and what her breakout character on The Bold Type might make of “Zen mommy” Daphne.

That conversation on the palazzo where Daphne talks about not being a victim, what do you think that means to her?
To me, that’s kind of the key to her. I remember Mike at the very beginning being pretty specific about Daphne not being a victim of her circumstances. This dynamic that they set up in the first two episodes between Cameron and Daphne, I was like, “Who? What’s her name?” You’ve seen it before. You kind of think that she’s just this simple housewife who doesn’t have too much going on. And I think what becomes really interesting about the dynamic is in this episode when you realize that that’s not totally the case. Daphne has a relationship with her own sadness in a way that maybe some of the other people that she’s on the trip with don’t. And I think that is what enables her to be genuinely happy in her marriage.

Another thing that Mike said that felt really important was that the connection between Daphne and Cameron is really legit, and they actually really do enjoy being around each other. They have a great sex life and they laugh and they play, and all of those things are real. It’s not what Harper thinks it is, which is just bullshit. And so I think that that is the driving force of that whole thing, and then you kind of are meant to wonder, Well does it really matter how somebody finds happiness? Even if it’s unconventional to you and it might seem kind of fucked up, if there’s happiness, who cares?

I read an interview where you described her as a “Zen mommy.” I was wondering what you meant by that.
I actually can’t take credit for that, because that was actually a term that Aubrey coined when we were trying to figure out what her wardrobe was going to be. The Zen mommy is this idealized woman who has 75 children — not 74, 75 — and is always wearing a beautiful floral dress and looks like nothing is bothering her. And I felt like that was sort of the vibe that I wanted for Daphne. I wanted her to seem very carefree, because she sort of is unconcerned, even in the bad ways, like not voting.

What was it like filming in that palazzo? I believe it was actually in Palermo, right?
It was in Palermo. It was pretty cool because Mike really loves to cast non-actors to do things. So there is like, a two-page scene from that episode that ended up getting cut, where the actual owner of that palazzo was showing Aubrey and I around. And he had never been in front of a camera before, and it was so cute, because he couldn’t walk and talk at the same time. So Mike kept trying to be like, “So you’re just explaining to them where everything is, but you’re moving.” And he would be like, “The bedrooms — are here. The dining room — is here.” He was so precious. And it really was his house! And we finished and we were in the pool and he brought us gin-and-tonics. It was so sweet. I loved that Mike loves finding that authenticity wherever he can. A lot of the staff that you see is the real staff that was working at the Four Seasons with us.

I’m curious about the experience of shooting in this hotel in Sicily while it’s on its offseason and mostly empty. What’s it like to be play-acting being on vacation in that hotel in Taormina?
Oh, psychotic! I mean, 100 percent insanity. It was like, weird actor camp. In many ways, I wouldn’t recommend it! No, it was so fun, it was really very special and unique. It was really cool to see how Taormina sort of blossoms. Like, when we first got there, it was empty, 70 percent of the restaurants and everything else were closed, and then it felt like overnight, all of a sudden, the streets were filled with people. So it was kind of cool to see that transition happen in real time.

I was surprised by how willing that community was to welcome us and to make us a part of their daily life. The people who had their restaurants open were so good to us, they would take us in and they would offer us cooking classes. They were just unbelievably warm and kind. To me, when I think about the trip, that’s the thing I take away more than anything, the people that we met in that area who were just so lovely.

Did you have a favorite meal that you had there, something that sticks in your memory like, “I really miss the X from Taormina?”
Well, I did make an eggplant Parmesan with my own hands that was pretty mediocre! But I had a great time doing that class. Truly, it was just this man who owned this restaurant, who was not teaching cooking classes. He was like, “Show up to my restaurant tomorrow at noon.” And I was like, “Am I in some sort of rom-com? This is so sick!” And I just showed up and he was like, “Cool, just get into the kitchen.” I had an apron and the chef was cooking meals to give to people who were there to pay to eat the food. He was just teaching me things as that was happening. It was incredible.

Going back to Daphne and Cameron’s relationship, did you know Theo at all before? How did you get to know him?
I knew him! He did not know me. I had seen him in Divergent of course, but no, we didn’t meet, and there were no chemistry reads before, which is a little bit unusual for things like this. So we met for the first time in Italy. But he was just really easy to do scenes with. He’s so (a) talented, and (b) open, which is the only thing you can ask for, you know? He was really playful, and it was really simple with him.

You have that speech about the elephants, which gives the episode its title. What was it like to do that scene with Aubrey? How did you approach playing the dynamic where they’re sort of feeling each other out?
It was fun because it was a new location for us, and I think it was the first time, too, that Aubrey and I were shooting scenes alone together, up to that point we had been doing a lot of stuff with just the four of us. Some of those Noto scenes were my favorite scenes to shoot with her, because I just felt like it was a different color for both Daphne and Harper that we hadn’t seen yet.

It’s interesting seeing that part of her revealed. How did you think of that side of her? What do you think she sees in Harper that she wants to figure out?
I think that there is a genuine want in Daphne to connect with Harper. I do think that Daphne probably doesn’t have that many female friends, and so I think that that is a part of what drives her. But also she’s using her in a way, like, Harper is sort of an accessory in Daphne’s game that she’s playing with Cameron that they’re both getting off on. Like, I genuinely believe that Daphne would have gone to Nodo by herself if Harper had not gone with her, just to piss him off.

When I talked to Haley Richardson about the show, she mentioned that Mike White seems to incorporate parts of the actors in the characters you play. He’s very open to a little bit of improv. Do you feel there are parts of Daphne that are colored by who you are?
Yeah, absolutely. And I feel like everybody on the show would probably say that that’s true for them. You’re able to connect in a way to these people that, in a lot of ways, are not accessible humans, and it’s because Mike does that. He picks something in you that the character also has, and he just kind of lets you go off and do that thing.

What do you think the thing was in you that the character also has?
I know this is so lame, but I feel like I can’t give that away. It’s too vulnerable. But I will say I do think that something that Daphne has that I connect with is just that she has an inclination to bring people in around her, and I do connect to that. So that’s one thing I feel like she and I share.

Before you played Daphne you were on The Bold Type. What do you think Sutton would make of Daphne?
You know, there are some pretty key similarities between those two characters, and I think it’s their warmth. I think that Sutton and Daphne are similar in the sense that they want to make the people around them feel safe. That’s often through humor. And there’s just a general sort of sunshine-y-ness to those two characters that I feel is similar. I think they’d probably get along, although I think Sutton’s a little bit harder than Daphne in some ways. That’d be interesting to see, them fight each other in a ring!

Stock futures fall following the S&P 500’s best week since June

Traders on the floor of the NYSE, Aug. 4, 2022.

Source: NYSE

Stock futures traded lower early Monday morning after the S&P 500 posted its biggest weekly gain in almost five months on the back of easing inflation data.

Dow Jones Industrial Average futures fell 84 points, or 0.25%. S&P 500 futures declined 0.32% and Nasdaq 100 futures traded 0.55% lower.

The S&P 500 rallied 5.9% last week for its best week since June. Investors cheered a lighter-than-expected inflation reading, betting that the Federal Reserve would soon slow its aggressive tightening campaign.

“A notable shift has occurred in the market, with investors increasingly risk-on across asset classes,” said Mark Hackett, Nationwide’s chief of investment research. “Technical indicators have improved dramatically, with investor sentiment, momentum, breadth, and risk factors all showing notable improvement.”

The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite gained 8.1% last week for its best week since March, while the blue-chip Dow advanced 4.2%.

The Cboe Volatility Index, known as Wall Street’s fear gauge or the VIX, fell 1 point to 22.5, hitting the lowest level since August. The VIX, which tracks the 30-day implied volatility of the S&P 500, had traded above the 30 point threshold for most of October.

Investors digested news on the politics front over the weekend. Democrats will keep control of the Senate in the 2022 midterm elections, NBC News projected. The party will hold at least 50 seats after Sens. Mark Kelly of Arizona and Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada held off challenges.

Meanwhile, the third-quarter earnings season is set to continue, with a heavy emphasis on retail. Tyson Foods will report results Monday before the bell. Big retailers Walmart, Home Depot, Target, Lowe’s, Macy’s and Kohl’s are all slated to post numbers this week.

SNL: Dave Chappelle spoofs diverse casting on House of the Dragon

Dave Chappelle spoofed House of the Dragon during his Saturday Night Live tenure this weekend.

The controversial comedian began by asking the crowd: “Anyone out here watching this new show, ‘House of Dragons’ [sic]?

“I am the biggest Game of Thrones fan, I love their new show. And I got to tell you, I love that they’re including Black characters. But to be honest, the Black characters… they take me out of it a little bit. It’s that blonde hair and old timey accents. It’s a little jarring, where are these people from?”

Chappelle then teed up the SNL sketch by saying that executive producer Lorne Michaels had managed to secure a “sneak peek” of the show’s second season.

The comedy spoof was littered with characters and references to the host’s Noughties sketch show, Chappelle’s Show, including original cast member Donnell Rawlings.

In the SNL scene, Kenan Thompson as Lord Corlys Velaryon introduces “new allies” including Ice-T as Larry Targaryen.

The Game of Thrones prequel series faced criticism from some fans of George RR Martin’s original work over the diverse castings, which were not accurate to the book descriptions.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, series co-creator Ryan Condal said on the issue: “The world is very different now than it was 10 years ago when [Game of Thrones] all started. It’s different than 20 years ago when Peter Jackson made The Lord of the Rings. These types of stories need to be more inclusive than they traditionally have been.

“It was very important for [co-creator Miguel Sapochnik] and I to create a show that was not another bunch of white people on the screen, just to put it very bluntly.”

Elsewhere on SNL, Chappelle went on a wide-ranging, 15-minute monologue that featured risqué jokes about the Jewish community in light of Kanye West’s recent controversies.

49ers observations: Defense takes over in crucial 22-16 win over Chargers

SANTA CLARA — After a rough start on both sides of the ball, the 49ers got rolling in the second half against the Los Angeles Chargers.

The 49ers completed the sweep of their three games against teams stationed in Southern California with a 22-16 victory over the Chargers on Sunday night at Levi’s Stadium.

Quarterback Justin Herbert led the Chargers on an easy game-opening touchdown drive. The 49ers’ defense kept them out of the end zone over the final 51 1/2 minutes of the game.

Talanoa Hufanga clinched the game with an interception with less than a minute to play.

The 49ers (5-4) now hit the road. The team will travel to practice in the elevation of Colorado Springs during the week to get acclimated for the Mexico City, where they will face the Arizona Cardinals next Monday night.

But, first, here’s a look at three takeaways from their game against the Chargers (5-4):

49ers turning into a second-half team

The 49ers gained a game on the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC West standing with the come-from-behind victory about 12 hours after the Seahawks lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Munich, Germany.

The Seahawks still lead the division with a 6-4 record, while the 49ers improved to 5-4 with their second victory in two games over a team from Los Angeles.

The 49ers turned to the running game, and Jimmy Garoppolo helped the team keep a couple of big drives along with third-down conversions.

The 49ers took their first lead of the game on Christian McCaffrey’s 2-yard touchdown midway through the fourth quarter for a 19-16 lead.

Garoppolo completed 19 of 28 pass attempts for 240 yards. He didn’t throw any touchdown passes and wasn’t intecepted.

But the 49ers, as expected, relied heavily on their run game.

The 49ers gained 158 yards on 40 rushing attempts.

Elijah Mitchell returned after missing seven games with a knee sprain. He led the 49ers with 89 yards rushing on 18 carries.
McCaffrey added 38 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries.

Greenlaw ejected after hit deemed illegal

Linebacker Dre Greenlaw was penalized, but the Chargers might have received the bigger short-term penalty.

On a third-and-6 play from the 49ers’ 40-yard line, Herbert took off running. Greenlaw made a helmet-to-helmet hit on Herbert at the end of the 5-yard gain.

Greenlaw was penalized for unnecessary roughness, and he was ejected from the game because his hit on Herbert was judged to be flagrant.

While Greenlaw was forced to head to the locker room, Herbert was removed from the game in order to be evaluated for a possible head injury.

Backup quarterback Chase Daniel entered for the final three plays of the first half. He twice threw incomplete and was sacked by Jordan Willis on third down.

Cameron Dicker came on for a 40-yard field goal to give the Chargers a 16-10 lead at halftime.

Herbert was cleared and returned to action in the second half, but the Chargers settled for three points instead of the touchdown that had a better chance of happening with Herbert at quarterback.

Slow start coming off bye week

The 49ers played their best half of football heading into the bye week.

They did not carry over that momentum two Sundays later.

The 49ers’ offense has been a lot more about “potential” than it has been about “potent” — even with a long list of playmakers on that side of the football.

After steamrolling the Los Angeles Rams in the second half of a 31-14 victory in Week 8, all the talk was about the 49ers’ limitless number of offensive playmakers. The 49ers have yet to show that offensive explosiveness on a consistent basis.

The 49ers opened with a 14-play, 67-yard drive that netted them just three points.

Then, the rest of the first half was horrendous.

Brandon Aiyuk fumbled on the first play of the 49ers’ next drive after a 19-yard reception.

That was followed by consecutive three-and-out possessions. Mitch Wishnowsky’s punt was deflected, which set up the Chargers’ second field goal of the game and a 13-3 lead in the second quarter.

The 49ers finally got something going on their final drive of the first half.

Garoppolo hit George Kittle for 21 yards and Ray-Ray McCloud for 33 yards.

Garoppolo took it the final yard for his seventh rushing touchdown of his career.
